    Thank you so much for this video!! My sadly passed piggie Star had ovarian cysts, and was such a fighter till the very end. ❤❤ It’s such a common illness, but like all other Guinea pig related medical issues, sadly under-researched. Thank you for spreading knowledge to the piggie community! 🙏🏻🙏🏻

    One of my girls was spayed in June at Holly House - fantastic vets! We had only had her 10 months at this point but she was nearing if not 3 years old too. We had no real history on her so just assumed she was a bigger pig. Our signs for the cysts, which we believe weren’t hormonal as no hair loss or behavioural changes, were that she’d suddenly gained over 100g in less than 2 weeks and looked and felt pregnant! We had just been on holiday so feared she’d been put in with our boys while boarding at first 😬 as soon as she felt her the vet diagnosed her with ovarian cysts and we were offered the same treatment plan with the pros and cons of each. While in good health it made sense to just tackle the problem and not have it return down the line. She is a different Guinea pig now. So full of life and way more active.
    Before I took my girl in I had read some bad experiences with spays. I think the main problem is the anaesthetic and pain management some vets use. So I completely second the need to find a cavy savvy vet. Ask how often they perform the procedure. Ask their success rates. Better doesn’t always mean more expensive either - when a vet performs it successfully so often, they likely class it as a routine procedure rather than a specialist surgery.

    My piggy is currently going through the same thing. She is a long haired pig so I didn't notice the weight loss straight away, she seemed very normal and was eating, drinking & pooping fine. Then during her monthly nail & bum trim I noticed her nipple was slightly crusty, some hair loss on both her sides & then further down was a lump about 5cm wide. It's insane how quickly they can progress. Luckily I have her registered with an exotic vet and they saw her the same day, 1 week later they removed the lump. And we have now found out it was benign & mainly from a build up of hormones. Once she is healed we will neuter her to prevent more coming back. But I do recommend monthly checks and weighing your pigs regardless. I'm really happy your piggy is doing well & you were able to act fast ❤

    this is a very great and informative video!! one of my piggies recently had to be put to sleep after we thought she had ovarian cysts. my new vet believes it was actually a cancerous mass after it started rapidly growing and ulcerating in only a matter of days after her first hormone injection. we had gone to so many vets for her symptoms, its been a long couple months. it’s unfortunate but i don’t really have any vets super experienced with specifically guinea pigs near me. the closest ive found is my newest vet who we travel to from a state over, who did everything they could to try and help my little peppa🌈

    So far I've had four girls need their ovaries removed. On all four the symptoms were clear. One did did not survive recovery, two did fine, all with the same Dr. who is very experienced and has done many flank removals.
    Sadly in the very beginning of my taking pigs in, I had another girl with this problem and did not understand what was happening, but I know now what I observed then, means. Poor girl. And she had to be euthanized due to not being willing to eat. She did live a good long life otherwise and was rescued from appalling conditions. Thanks so much for bringing this issue to the front so people will know what I didn't know then.
    I'd like to add one symptom to your list: heaving. In addition to the usual signs people associate with pain, you might observe a piggy bobbing their head a little bit with each breath, almost like the ticking of a watch. This is what Jeni-Jeni did, and I had no idea what it meant. She was in pain from her ovaries.

    Greatly appreciate this video Sarah as i will discuss the option of the bi- lateral with my vet. My nearly 4yr old had to just have a kidney stone removed and they identified the non-hormnal cysts. She had the op for the stone removal and it's taken over two weeks for her recovery from that, then she had diarrhoea, so it was very traumatic for her with all the syringe feeding and meds etc as she wasn't eating. Too soon after for another op, but because she wasn't recovering well, we made decision to drain the cysts for now. It was relentless for the poor girl 😢. 3 weeks now and she's almost back to normal, just need to get her weight back up before the next one. Pleased to hear Phoebe is doing well and great to know you could put her back with the others - hopefully i can do the same. Phew

    This is such an important video. Thank you so much for informing people of this incredibly common topic that I feel is not discussed enough, and for creating this space for the community to share their experiences and knowledge as well. Sadly, I learned too late about this illness and put my trust in what I now can see were very inexperienced veterinarians, who didn’t see the warning signs that were showing everywhere on my two sows. I’m very very sad to say that one of my baby piggies didn’t survive the postop period after her spay given her advanced condition. I’ve had to brave the same surgery process with her sister, and luckily her illness hadn’t progressed as much, and she is now in her second day postop, recovering here right next to my bed because I won’t let her out of my sight. I love all piggies and I hope exotic veterinary medicine continues to grow so that they can all receive the quality of care they deserve.
    PD. My piggies are my first pets ever and SqueakDreams was one of my main sources of research and learning when I first got my babies, so this channel holds a special place in my heart, and the fact that this video was posted right when my sows are going through this process is somewhat, in a weird way, full circle. Anyway, if you ever read this Sarah, i’m eternally grateful. Hugs from Chile. ❤

    My vet recommended preventative spaying for my little Snowball. I thought that was a little odd, but I went along with it - it sounds like it's the future of piggy care.
    Snowball was barely slowed down by the surgery. Hyperactive little poof. I was worried that she'd pull a stitch, running around all the time!

    Tiger, one of my girls had a large cyst on her back near her spine. We got it removed, and had to separate her. We wouldn’t usually separate, but because of its position and I know my girls like to climb on their backs, which is probably how the cyst came about to begin with, she had to be separated for about 8 days. Just to be safe.
    I’m glad phoebe is doing well. :)

I wanted to find out more about Ovarian Cyst, as my vet keeps suggesting me to spay my female guinea pigs when i brought her to the vet due to her being bloated and seems to be in pain when i touch her tummy. So wanted to find out more about the ovarian cyst that the vet keeps mentioning that over 70% of female piggies will tend to get this illness.

I really appreciate your channel. It never really occurred to me that theyd hide paun because they are prey animals. I have two female Pitbulls that came from a fighting situation that are obsessed with them. They give my cats the stink eye if they get too close.

    My piggie was almost 2 years old when she started experiencing symptoms. Due to her low weight, size and general health, the vet didn't think she would make it through surgery. He spoke with the Royal Dick Vets Edinburgh and they said that anecdotally, they have had great success with the hormonal implant and recommended it for her. It's been 11 months since she had it, she's back to her old self and fingers crossed remains that way for years to come. The vet said we would have to talk about putting her to sleep if it didn't work as her quality of life was so poor with the symptoms she experienced. So glad it worked. It cost me around the £110 mark for the implant and insertion of it. The scan, blood test and 2 vet consults were the more costly aspect at around £160.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  Рік тому

      That's really great to hear! I was told minimum of £250 for the implant and they'd had zero success with it - was it the same hormone used in ferrets (if you know?). Perhaps there are more options available already 😊. So glad to hear it helped your girl 🧡

    Three of my 5 year olds were spayed bilaterally at the start of September, they ranged from grape sized to 3-4mm. They all did really well, our 8 year old neuro girl also has cysts, unfortunately no treatment option is really in her best interest as theyre not hormonal and draining or surgery would cause too much stress on her neurological condition 😔
    Our intersex guinea pig gets suprelorin implants every 9 months or so to supress her testosterone output to prevent bullying with her neutered male.
    Its great how far piggy medicine has come recently.

    I have, or shall I say had 3 female guinea pigs. I still have one of the 3 (: My daughter noticed that Dakota had hair loss which I did not know had anything to do with any disease and so didn’t immediately seek taking her to the vet. It was probably the reduced eating that I noticed and so took her in. I told him about the eating and said oh by the way she has this hair loss, do you know what that is about. He took her and looked at her and felt her belly and said he did not need to do an X-ray to confirm that she has ovarian cyst and she needed surgery and if not then I should consider putting her down because it is very painful and she will ultimately die. I scheduled the surgery, he recommended separating her from her bio sister, Madison, and Cali (California) who was the adopted sister. Took her for surgery, all went well, they called for me to take home, so I brought her home (Same day), put her in a cage for herself and set her in her bed. She stayed there, and I had to leave, and the 1st time I came back she was ok, the 2nd time, she had got up to eat or drink, climbed oddly through the food dishes and collapsed just before the water bottle. She was dead. I called the vet, and took her back, they did a free autopsy and said she must of had a blood clot and it must have traveled when she got up, which he said would explain the short distance she only walked. Sadly I loss her. Her bio sister passed away about 6 mos after. I did not know this could be possible, and should have, I had a cat who had this and had to have surgery, but not knowing hair loss is a huge indicator to ovarian cyst, and you should take your guinea in to a vet immediately, early diagnosis is sooo much better for your guinea pig. Cali is still with me and had had her 6yr birthday (:

    My piggy, Caramel, had the classic symptoms of ovarian cysts. When I took her to the vet for the spay surgery, it turned out that she did not have ovarian cysts. Instead, she had a huge cervical tumor that the vet was not able to completely remove, because it would have compromised other organs. She is recovering well, and her hair is slowly growing back. Unfortunately, since the vet was not able to get the whole tumor out, it will probably grow back.

Difficulty bonding and perennial sac cleaning just feels more appealing than periods and cysts (I know, it doesn't sound more appealing, idk why it is to me 😅)

      I use Holly House, Leeds. You should see if you have any exotics vets near you, and then you can phone them to ask if any vets specialise in guinea pigs. Or you could contact a local guinea pig rescue and ask where they would recommend. Phoebe's spay cost £250 including the initial consultation and all medicines. It is covered under most insurance policies if you have it (as long as it's definitely treatment for something and not a preventative spay). Hope this helps!

    my guinea pig grew oddly shaped lumps behind her nipples which caused them to secrete blood. i brought her to the vet and thought it was cancer. I did my best to care for and treat her but ended up putting her down after she lost quality of life. I now wonder if she just had cysts and died for nothing. I feel so guilty. Is that how cysts present? If anyone knows please let me know. I am so worried i just killed her for nothing and she was the light of my life i loved her with all my heart I miss her every day.

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  Рік тому

      I'm so sorry you lost your piggie. Lumps behind the nipples are not ovarian cysts, more likely mammary tumours. These could be cancerous so prognosis may not have been good. It's a tough decision to make but if quality of life is not there, you did the right thing for her ❤️

    Hi! I’ve been subscribed for you for some time now, I just wanted to ask if breeding would be something you’d be interested in? I have thought about doing it myself a little bit but there aren’t rlly and videos on it.?

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  Рік тому

      I would never breed guinea pigs myself, I adopt from rescues and encourage others to do so. Inexperienced breeding is unnecessary and risky for the animals involved, a lot of things can go wrong with pregnancy and birth, and it takes a great deal of knowledge and support from a good vet to become a responsible breeder. Unfortunately many (many, not all!) breeders are not responsible, which contributes to poorly guinea pigs sold off in pet shops and a culture of viewing them as "disposable" pets. I recommend watching my video from earlier in the year - "The Most Important Decision for New Guinea Pig Owners" for more information 😊

    Do you get cysts removed that are tiny and not really causing any issues? I have a piggy with cysts smaller than 1cm. She's a bit grumpy with her sister but nothing of note. Her sister is going through an ovariectomy because she has hormonal cysts

    I have a question, we’ve had guinea pigs for a while and normally we just put hay on the ground but i was wondering if there was like any accessory which is best for giving guinea pigs hay which is safe and still able to keep the cage a little bit cleaner

      Guinea pigs in general don't tend to bother with their incisions as much as other pets, however it can happen. Pain medication can help and should always be prescribed after any surgery. Another advantage of the ovariectomy is actually that the incisions are harder to reach, though Phoebe could reach hers. She didn't interfere with them at all though 😊

    I've heard that ovarian cysts can make piggies act more aggressive. Is that true? I have a beautiful absinnian girl. People say absinnians are the most friendly guinea pigs, but she is always acting very aggressive toward her cage mates (one girl, one boy, both younger). She isn't that old though, so I'm not sure about it. Could be that she is an exception and prefers being boss. Anyone has any idea if I need to worry?

      What is her behaviour and how old? I have an aby with cysts, she had them by the time she was 1. She rumbles a lot and chases. A vet can feel cysts

    first of all i want to say thankyou so much for this video because of this i noticed my little caramel straight away displaying symptoms shes been to the vet and has confirmed cysts, i live in the UK and want to get caramel spayed by an exotic vet does anyone know of any that are cheap as my regular non exotic vet had quoted £150

    • @SqueakDreams
      @SqueakDreams  8 місяців тому

      Glad the video helped! £150 is cheap for a spay, but if they aren't exotic vets I would be asking them how often they do this surgery, what method do they use (ovariectomy or midline) what are their success rates etc. Occasionally non-exotic vets specialise in guinea pigs which is great, but usually this is quite rare. Surgery is risky in piggies and I recommend choosing the most experienced vet you can, even if it costs a little more. Phoebe's spay was £190 with a very experienced exotics vet.
