The F-13 was crazy when the A-10 dropped, it was like running circles around the fat kid in the playground.
Jaek, keep making videos so that it causes the Gaijin gods to change more things and immediately make the video obsolete.
I'm slightly surprised that this didn't cover the J-8s, which are also derived from its predecessor (the J-7), and thus are at least partially related to the MiG-21 series.
Thought about including them but the video was getting pretty long. They really do feel like MiG-21s to fly for sure
J-8 is essentially Su-15
Fun fact: When the USSR provided MiG 21s to North Vietnam during the Vietnam War, the Chinese took out the electronic systems of such MiG 21s (since they had to be transferred through China) for reserve engineering, and replaced such systems with the domestically produced systems of the Chinese. Soviet air advisors in Vietnam were very shocked to discover this.
I really hope that in the future some people would make VPAF's market available skins for MiG 21 PF, MF, and PFM. I would buy them so hard. We're the most famous and enthusiastic MiG 21 users in the world and still have only one skin for that MiG 21 F-13

Late models of both have some crazy modifications. MiG-21UPG can fire R-77, R-73, and other precision guided air to ground munitions, while J-7 in the early 2000s evolves into JL-9.

The Mig-21 variant that i would love to see in the game is the LanceR configuration which are super modified Mig-21s that the Rumanian airforce used for a while before been replaced by the F-16.

I feel it's a bit worth noting on the 7E's flight model - what might be noticed by the utter lack of fuel bulge and the NR30 is that it's a 1st gen airframe. It's actually notably lighter than the Bis, which is part of why the difference in engine power isn't such a issue.

So, I have the J7d and I'll add a little fuel to your fire. The radar does not have IFF. I haven't looked into this personally, but I'm pretty sure a friend mentioned this is an upgrade from the 1990s. Imagine that in a relatively modern fighter... Not a big deal for most players since it doesn't have radar missiles anyway, but as a sim player it hurts. The plane is fun and makes a great vulture but it is awful in rb as you're in almost a perpetual uptier. I find its sim performance to be fantastic as long as you can ID planes well, and the pl7 being radar slavable is fantastic there. the hud is very nice to have for just about all situations.

MiG 21 SMT is an absolutely goated plane. So fun to fly
BTW : the PFM KH-66 can be guided if its locked onto an enemy aircraft but still needs a direct hit as it doesnt have proxy fuse
Interesting, haven't tried that but the Fireflash guidance works the same way so it wouldn't surprise me
The mig 21 bison is the best one now having the best missiles but only 200 in the cannons
Personally i find the J-7D to je quite fun for air sim as its 10.7 there (meaning it gets a down tier bracket 2/8 days in the rotation) and it gets a useful HUD in the cockpit
It should however have more modern avionics like a better RWR and better radar, one bug thing that makes this radar more useless then the saphire radar is the lack of IFF which really makes identifying aircraft a probably
Especially how I fly the fishbed in sim, i basically i fly low with radar off, look for targets visually, ID with radar and engage if enemy
The agms on the su-17m2 also guide by the nose, or at least they did when i used them yesterday.
IIRC those are laser guided and the laser is just a pod that's fixed forward, so they will set off LWS systems

Completely and utterly related to most of the video, but a small thing that bugs me is the Soviet flag, it's the 1936 version used during World War 2 which was replaced eventually in 1955 with a slightly different hammer and sickle design, about 4 years before the Mig-21 was introduced.
Again, insignificant nitpick, it's just something that always gets me when I see it.
I pulled the flags from the game files, I dont remember seeing a second version but I'll double check for next time

I actually really like the J-7D, but I do think it's overtiered for what it is and either needs PL-5Cs or a drop to 10.7.
The j7e is so much better than all other mig-21's in performance in WT

I will say for 9.7, R-3Rs arent exactly bad. Sure, they are very bad on paper, but the wide gimbal limit and decent acceleration of the missile allows you to 'lead' the missile at your targets which greatly improves its capability. I think its better than the AIM-7D in practise if you are good with them. Of course, with most missiles at this BR, it requires a fairly large degree of retardation on the enemies part to be effective.
I think they're best described as a gimmick
@@sparkling925 Nah they have some true effectiveness against enemies going very slow and in headons. I know what you mean tho, its very rare that a good player wont be able to defeat ur missile.

You're right but I should have been more specific; I meant to say nose guided and beam riding. There's nose guided missiles that aren't beam riding (Su-17M2) and there's beam riding missiles that aren't nose guided (Su25T)

Honestly the sps-k is kinda underrated, take the gun always. You can use your missiles as “chaff” most of the time in head on’s which works pretty well against 9L’s or really any all aspects in the 10.0 br range.
That's a lot of work to make a just work, especially one you paid money for

It's a little slower, it has the same width and drag as the 9B but the R3S is a few kilos heavier initially so it has ever so slightly less delta V.

@@jaek_898 Any particular reason why Sparrows sometimes don't track? My guess would be "two circles" indicator being not matching missile seeker reception or it gets confused by multiple tracking/guiding radars?
@@Panocek It has to do with the way they have the seeker tuning/filtering set up, combined with the plane's radar. They mess with those values from time to time. As far as I understand it's caused by the seeker being overwhelmed by multiple signals (red circle is accurate but not necesssarily for the plane in question?), or the signal being filtered out somehow. So the ideal situation is a headon, no ground clutter, with only one target in front of you. If you do that they usually work. But if you do a side/rear aspect shot at longer range with multiple planes near your target there's a much higher chance of it not tracking. I just try to minimize the factors that "confuse" it, and not launch it if I think the chance of it going stupid are too high.
