Yants are an integral part of Thai culture. You see these magical symbols everywhere; on amulets, in taxis, storefronts, and etched in skin.
Sak means to tap, and Sak Yant tattooing is the process of getting any of the thousands of sacred symbols tapped into your skin with magical ink. In this Thailand travel vlog, a leave from Bangkok to travel north to Chiang Mai to join a Sak Yant Tattoo tour with Where Sidewalks End. This is a special type of traditional tattoo. Why getting a bamboo tattoo done by hand poke style is very common. This is much more sacred.
Previous to this experience, I visited a very famous tattoo temple called Wat Bang Phra just outside of Bangkok, Thailand. Here, the famous Wai Kru Tattoo festival happens every year, Thousands of devotees return to this location to honor their Ajarn, and to recharge the power of their Sak Yants. I received my Gao Yord thai tattoos there.
In Chiang Mai Ajarn Rung gives me the Paed Tidt tattoo, along with the Silver Tongue Magpies. The 8 directions enchantments means many things, but above all, safety while travelling. The magpies, make your speech more influential. Both solid enchantments for any travel vlogger.

Sak Yant did not start from monks. Someone has been lying to you. Monks had to go learn it from Ajarn (Person capable of teaching) back then it were the Rue Si. The Rue Si knew magic before Buddhism was even invented. The holy Buddha respected Rue Si teachings and they both respected each other but Buddha never practice magic nor advocate magic.
Humans being human like Monks, will go to search and learn magic and so they learn it from an Arjarn. Ajarn does not need to be a monk. The great think about being a monk is that you will always have people they can teach. So the magic is taught to other monk and other normal people who are capable.
So I understand why you think these tattoos must be from monks but you are very mistaken before these are not the teaching of buddhism but a teach from their teacher. Get your shit right. BTW I'm Thai and I study Buddhism and I love magic arts.

Hey I know this was three years ago that you commented this but I have always been terrified of needles although I am not now but tattoos are the most amazing feeling you will ever feel it’s like enchanting so I wouldn’t let your fear of needles stop me from getting a tattoo because like he said it’s about 500+ needles at once sometimes and sometimes less and mostly more! But I would highly recommend giving it a shot if you haven’t already within the three years of this comment because it’s truly an amazing experience and now that I’m basically covered I don’t regret a single bit of it even the pieces that I don’t like-because they tell a story-tell my story! Most of mine are hand poked like mikes were in this video!

Its use is recorded as early as the 13th century, though its exact meaning-whether it refers to a specific empire, a certain historical period, or the Khmer people in general-has been unclear throughout history.[1] "

I have some relatives in Cambodia who refrain from Sak Yant there because you generally would have to be faithful to the oath. It looks cool though.

I try my best to stick to the tenants, though some of them are easy to stick to. I had heard that a few of them are "Don't sit on an urn" and "Don't walk under a bridge when the water is dry". I also heard "don't brush the skirt of a menstruating woman". That's a hard one to know. 🐉

You're 100% right. I dont like these farang always going to get it cause it looks cool and have no interest in the religious aspect of it. Good thing it just becomes a curse and they have no idea.

Wow! Oh, my. Sawasdee khaa, MikMik! This reminded me of my bus trips from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, to Udon Thani then crossed the border to Vientiane, Laos. :-) And yes, indeed, there are so many different kinds of amulets in Thai local markets. I got me an elephant one, for prosperity. And I still keep it to these days. Anyways, that's another intricate body art you have, MikMik. Its significant meaning and reverence are to be respected. I recall the time when you met with Whang-Od. :-D Take great care.
