The real risk in getting a traditional tattoo in Kalinga is being grabbed by Apo Whang-od . You will get her signature tattoo and signature move at the same time.
Bebe Reyes lol i was thinking the same thing. She might not even find mine since its on the low side of average and I wear sports fit boxer briefs. I would die of embarrassment if she tells everyone its the smallest shes felt.
I'm so glad you addressed this, and that you shared the information about the different types of needles used and how bloodborne infections spread. And even though I always assumed that you take specific measures to ensure your safety in these extreme situations, it's great to hear you talk about it! Because, trust me, we don't want anything to happen to you, either! Glad your Apo Whang-Od video is getting lots of attention. I hope more viewers continue to find you and your content! And have fun on your road trip.
I got a couple of tattoos in thailand like this that are more than just superficial decorations, and wanted to do more in other countries; but had difficulty finding anywhere else in the world where they are still done by real ajarns, priests, shamans, etc. in the modern age. Good to see at least one place in the philippines has this too
Thanks for talking about this it definitely not something that is really spoken about especially at the level of traditional tattooing, my sister got a traditional tattoo as well in Thailand a few years back and our biggest worry when we found out that she got it was the risk of possible infections.
Nice video, great to see that you address this as there are many misconceptions about traditional tattooing. The one thing that many people don’t think about is the aftercare, if you are visiting areas like Thailand or the Philippines from a western country then chances are that your body is not accustomed to the local environment and may pick up a virus or bacteria that you have never been exposed to before so it is important to keep sanitary aftercare practices so as not to get infected.
Thanks for sharing! My bro got two tattoos from Whang od. The first one was 5 years ago and it got infected when he was travelling in India. Anyway, the second one he got last month. So far so good. He brought a lot of medicine with him to keep it clean. Whang Od changed the thorn she used though ☺
hi you are so interesting you have a lot of knowledge and the things you get up to is amazing. im disabled and cant do this so im 100% grateful for the work you do and the tattoo looks good. Fearless and Far for life.
I’m grateful for people like you and your good vibes. The channel needs more adventurous souls and open minds like your’s. That you for being here and part of the Fearless Fam.
I also got a tattoo from her 3 years ago. It's true the amount of blood that could be passed on from one person to another is relatively minute. There is no vacuum to hold the blood as she is using thorns and according to some papers ive read, HIV virus does not live long when exposed to air.. If there was anything I was anxious about, it was the blood that gets infused into the ink in the bowl and the tissue paper she uses to wipe off the blood. But as with every other thing in this life, there are risks inherent that you cannot completely eliminate. The most risky thing I did when I went to Kalinga, I think, was riding topload in a jeepney that could throw me off the cliff if i was careless.
I really have to say im so glad I ran into one of your videos today! (New subscriber here), one of my biggest dreams after I finished serving in the army is to travel at the east side of earth. Youre really inspiring and helping me realize how bad I want it and hopefully, ill visit there soon!! So thank you so much for sharing your experiences, amazing advantuers, ans helping me decide where I wanna travel at. Would love for some personal advice!

I'm so happy I found this Channel! I'm happy it went on trending, UA-cam has gotten so overcrowded that new and amazing channels get overlooked. Thanks for the Welcome! my favorite part of your videos are how genuine they are. They're not too over done or saturated with video editing.
Hey Mike new subscriber here, (got to know you bcoz of Kulas). In my opinion, knowing that the needle/thorn used, is rarely changed (traditional), I see a possible exposure and inoculation here. The risk of infection from hiv, hep b and lesser, hep c,, is a lot (logarhythmically) higher than the modern tatooing (if using sterile needle every each client- which is almost 0 risk). Since you have a lot of viewers and subscribers, Hope you'll be more careful especially on these topics. Philippines is endemic with hepatitis B and with regards to hiv stats, we only see the tip of the iceberg. HIV and other blood borne diseases awareness is what we need to disseminate. Thanks Mike for the videos and have a nice day in Mindanao. 😊😊😊
This has a point, I also think of the possibility of transferring a blood born disease from one person to another before watching this video. Very nice! Subscribed!
Not so new subscriber (newish maybe when you’re at 70,000) But i can feel it. You are going to reach your 100,000 subscribers milestone soon. And it’s going to happen here in the Philippines! Thanks to the ‘magic touch’ of Whang-Od. It’s going viral man! You deserve it. We can’t wait for the next one.
Pretty wild right? I spent a whole day editing this, and didn’t expect it to do so well. I just really liked my experience there, and thought I should make it an extra special edit. So happy I did, and excited to make more!!

glad your getting tracktion from thaT Last video and glad you went into more detail about the difference between "risk" and "calculated risk" . Life without risk isn't a life worth living

@@fearlessandfar Of all the great adventurous shows you have somehow I really like the "Cursed foods" show lol. But the Phillipine series and The Hadza and Tanzania shows are great as well!! I'm literally watching the channel right now 😅 .
Hi Mike. I love your videos. They're always so visually beautiful and informative, albeit sometimes scary/risky looking! Your videos are different in a way that I can't really explain. Keep up the great work, and be safe!
I like the way you think man. You're very wise. If you don't take risk you'll live a life of regret. You should live life not just exist. This doesn't mean you have to jump into ignorant situations though like you said study the experience first.
Hi mike, I love your content you encourage people to face their fear, I've been watching your travel vlog its not just about travelling but learning the culture and experience it. keep it up mike
You are what I call not only an adventurous traveller, you are more importantly a smart guy who shares thoughtful and insightful ideas in your narratives. I want to be like you when I grow up :) I wish to be able to travel with you too. Where are you originally from?

The moment I heard your voice in one of Kulas’ videos, I had to stop and look for your channel and subscribed. There’s something in your way of speaking; the proficiency & clarity 👍🏼 Idk but that makes you one of my favorite youtubers 😉
She is 101 yo, and shes done this for years and shes still alive! But yeah calculated risk and always ask for options, Filipinos always consider other preferences. See how the flute, smile and chat made a difference with her mood.❤️
That was really interesting, Mike! It's cool that you address these kinds of things as well. I would love to have a tattoo on my shoulder or arm, but I doubt it will ever happen, as I suffer from a skin condition called psoriasis :(
Thank you for your reply, Mike! Oh, that is strange how it is just in those places for you. But good of course that it is limited. Sadly for me it's all over my body. I guess my face is just about the only place which has not been affected much over the years. Right now I am doing pretty ok, but sometimes it can get really bad. Not sure if this link will post, but you can see the progress on an Instagram post of mine: instagram.com/p/BJP3zB-B0F-/?taken-by=paddybee70 I'm just afraid that getting a tattoo would mess things up even more. Let's see how it goes. Maybe one day :)
I also have it and am covered in tattoos and been tattooing 20 years. I avoid getting ink during a flare up as it slows the healing time but eventually they do settle.
So educational ! You are my becoming fav to follow in vlog youtuber . You got me man with your fighterboys trip ! Glad you made it to Kulas and the rest of the guys 👏🏼😁❤️
Im a new sub, and tbh i only learned about you when i watch the fighter boys content, i may be 1yr late, or so, but when i started watching your vlogs, i was amazed how interestingly deep you are, how you showed respect on every culture you immerse yourself into, how you chose the right words so you wont offend anyone(remember iphone x got stolen, how you call women "the ladies of the night). And yes your vids is not for everyone. There are videos that i dont see myself getting into, but your courage, your bravery inspired me to try to get out of my comfort zone. You have my respect Mikmik.
Yow man great feature about apo whang od. I just want to share about the tattooing of apo. If you noticed she has a bag full of thorns. Everytime she does ink she changes her needles(thorns) and gives it to you as your souvenir. Jsut saying man. Keep ya heads up. Thumbs up man. Hope to see you visit cambodias's traditional tatooing too.
Nearly all modern tattoo artist use fresh needles for each tattoos so there virtually is NO chance for these bloodborne infections you are associating with "tattoos and drug use"
uh yea..? maybe i misunderstood but you stated that because of the tattoo machines reservior that it would be easier for the infections to occur. Not trying to be an ass just wanted to stop possible spread of misinformation.
@@fearlessandfar yeah but those reservoirs are not like a syringe they are open and air gets into them that drastically destroys the fragile hiv virus also they usually are one use only on most tattoo machines just like the needle
Think the one thing you're forgetting is when you have a modern tattoo, injection, blood withdrawn, the needle/s are new and sterile. So there's no risk of infection, only how your body reacts to the ink. I see why using one thorn/bamboo/metal rod can be pretty safe cos there's nowhere for the blood to gather tho
The risk is that they don’t use new needles, or they don’t sterilize them. It seems these days though, for modern tattooing they just use new needles now.
Fearless and Far holy shit you actually replied to my comment 😮 I get that, and I agree that tho its still isky using the same thorn/bamboo/metal bar, there's still a small risk but cos there isn't any build up of blood and stuff, id still take the risk of a traditional tattoo. Great video bro, only been wat hing you a week or two and I'm subscribing with the notification bell too. Keep up the great videos man
You're a sensible coz educational infos. and honest to goodness Vlogger Mike! You're experience made this ypu as person . I subscribe here fr. Germany . Enjoyed watching a lot your Vlogs about the Phils. !!!
Cool.video, thanks for sharing. I have a full sleeve tattoo, modern tattooists use single use needles, which they open in front of u. There is less of a risk of HIV and blood borne infections that way. Brave of u to have the traditional tattoos. Hx
Fearless (Yet informed and cautious) and Far, though I hope youll still be in the Philippines when I move back to Palawan in November, I really appreciate the thoughtful description. I want to get to Kalinga for the 3dot at least. Every tattoo I have has meaning, A lineage from a native grandfather, you can see the minor sleeve in a few of my vids,, but I hope to get a chance one day to talk to you and Finn about the meaning of your stuff Keep crushing it Salamat Brod
You know I really really love travelling, and I am very inspired to your vlogs so you are now becoming my favorite travel vlogger. And i really love your videos. By the way I'm from Philippines. ♥️♥️

I just saw you trying to have the coconut by hitting it with the stone and mavrick.it cracked me up.loving it already.i will wait for your video coz im your it will be awesome too like the other blogger you are with!!!
Very good Mike! When I first saw you getting the tattoo from Apo Whang-Od my immediate thought was concern for your health, but I didn't have you figured to be as foolish and irresponsible enough to do that unprepared. Later in the comments I found that you were not that guy and you were prepared. This explanation is very valuable to those who might find themselves in similar situations. It is also valuable to put your followers' minds at ease for your safety...I hope. You may still get some comments of concern heh, heh. Your explanation makes perfect sense and works for me, I'm reasonably sure that I would go ahead and be tattooed myself armed with these facts. Thanks man, keep it up I'll be watchin'. ............................PEACE!!
The real risk in getting a traditional tattoo in Kalinga is being grabbed by Apo Whang-od . You will get her signature tattoo and signature move at the same time.
GB Ryan foremost on my mind would be to be found lacking down there, than the risk of an infection from a tattoo needle. hahaha!

You completely get it. There is risk everyday we don't think about, then we over analyze situations like this.
Its not just hiv,hiv actually has never been transmited by a tattoo in the us as cdc states but hepatitis b or c does and can live months on needles

Hope to see you visit cambodias's traditional tatooing too.
Yaaaaas! I hope you have a great time exploring the whole of Mindanao with Kulas. Amping! ^_^
Also very very Amped
Cool! But errr.. "Amping" = take care in bisaya ^_^
Nearly all modern tattoo artist use fresh needles for each tattoos so there virtually is NO chance for these bloodborne infections you are associating with "tattoos and drug use"
Did you even watch the whole video?
uh yea..? maybe i misunderstood but you stated that because of the tattoo machines reservior that it would be easier for the infections to occur.
Fearless and Far holy shit you actually replied to my comment 😮
I get that, and I agree that tho its still isky using the same thorn/bamboo/metal bar, there's still a small risk but cos there isn't any build up of blood and stuff, id still take the risk of a traditional tattoo. Great video bro, only been wat hing you a week or two and I'm subscribing with the notification bell too. Keep up the great videos man

Cool.video, thanks for sharing. I have a full sleeve tattoo, modern tattooists use single use needles, which they open in front of u. There is less of a risk of HIV and blood borne infections that way. Brave of u to have the traditional tattoos. Hx

Your channel deserves more sub☺❤
Taking risks means you're alive💪🏻
