hehe , in Oregon Inlet , me and the wife are usually about less than 100 feet from offshore boats rolling by at 15 MPH or more , we nose into the waves , bouncy ,bouncy , and done , wake probably 3 feet or more. Kayaks when you nose in can take some serious chop and 90 degree angles. I actually had my autopilot drive bang on the bottom a few times because the trough made the water below the kayak shallower than my draft lol..............autopilot has been awesome through it all.
Should turn into wake/wave if possible, should you have a plan b (paddle/ore) u can use it as a makeshift outrigger, power pole if ur shallow enough, great vids👍🏾🤘🏽
As soon as I saw those swells I would have turned nose into them. I've been caught out before, not responding quickly enough and taking an early bath as a result. I lost some gear and, obviously, my day was ruined but it could have been far worse! Steep learning curve. Stay safe my man.
Great video, Mark, the swells from that barge certainly would make anyone nervous! Nice catch of reds and that meal looked absolutely delicious! Take care and be safe!
Love your channel, but never take a wave broadside. The ICW was cut specifically for towboat navigation. It is your responsibility to always keep yourself in a safe position. They have a top speed of 5 mph, which is plenty of time to get to the bank.
Those aren't barges. That is a towboat and it was running light boat (no barges). Barges are the big metal rectangular things they push. Be careful running around them. Good luck and tight lines.
Mark, Here's a super easy Red Beans and Rice recipe that I cook in a crock pot. I'm from Louisiana and got this from my Cajun grandmother, (except she used a regular pot): 1 lb dry red beans 1 lb Savoie's Andoulle Sausage 1 pk Savoie's Tasso 1 -2 TBS olive oil 2 onions - chopped 2 bell peppers - chopped 2 TBS minced garlic 1/4 tps cayenne pepper 1/4 tps white pepper 1/2 tps black pepper 4-5 splashes Worchestershire sauce 2-3 splashes of Tabasco 1/2 TBS salt (or to taste) Cut up sausage and tasso in to small pieces and saute in skillet in olive oil. Place in a paper towel lined bowl and pat down with paper towel to remove excess grease. Dump in crock pot. Saute' onions, bell peppers, and garlic in the remainder of the grease left in skillet. Dump in crock pot. Add dry beans, and remaining ingredients to crock pot. Add water to crock pot until it's close to the top (about an inch from the top). Turn crock pot on HIGH. I usually start it around 8:00 or 9:00 at night. When I go to bed at around 11:00, I turn the crock pot to LOW and let it cook all night. At that time I'll add water before I go to bed if it's needed.
I use to have a narrow, non-fishing kayak so you really had to be careful of swells. The technique was to keep your torso vertical and let the kayak roll underneath you with your hips. Butt stays in the seat as you bend left or right at the waist to stay vertical to the water. If you brace to kayak with your hands you’ll flip.
A great episode Mark. Awesome Redfish to finish off with! I love your honesty when it came to the troublesome reel and I hope the family cat at least scored a few off cuts of fresh fish?!
If that shook you up, I'd recommend proceeding with caution should you ever decide to kayak fish offshore. Glad the ePDL handled it well, I'm heavily considering making the swap from Hobie to Oldtown given Hobie's recent QC.
My first time yak’n in PCB we were in 3-5 ft swells. For some reason I wasnt that scared. 20 minutes later in a monsoon I caught my first Red-28”!!! We still can’t believe we wanted to fish that bad!!!
Yes, Old town needs to make some changes to the seating comfort. I’m 6’2” and have the same issue with it. Added padding is helpful but not the right fix. The autopilot seat looks like it has a totally different design to the seat back. But I have never sat in one to see if it hits the back the same way. My back is toast from injuries and I was hoping for the old towns to be better. I knew that I didn’t want to go Hobie design and the price and now their warranty problems. The epdl seems nice but there is those prices again. Good luck with it.
That happened to me once... Kayak flipped, broke a rod, lost my pliers and my cool. Now when I see any boat making white caps, I head to shore and grab some mud and stand up. Better to wash up on the reeds than flip in the marsh.
Awesome way to start the year with a catch, clean and cook - I do agree Popeyes red beans and rice are also my favorite- tight lines- PuraSal Angler 🙌🏻
I've never liked grits - and we live in TN grit country. My wife and I were both intrigued by your recipe though. We will give that a try. Fish and meal looked really good. Nice video!!!
Looks delicious. My cardiologist doesn't want me to have salt but I've never been one to add much salt so I'm good with what you're doing there! looks yummy
You should come out to the Apalachicola Bay or Port St Joe Bay in FL sometime. We have been in choppy water which make the barge wake look like ripples. Full disclosure: we don't voluntarily go out in that water, but our kayak is 17' and has high sides so it can handle it pretty well.
@@MDLRFishing 🤣😂🤣. I understand! The rivers, creeks, and bayous in our area are similar to what you have in your videos. The bays can be anything from: smooth, light chip, moderate chop, and "oh my God what are we doing out here?" We're good with smooth and light chip - anything beyond that means we were caught off guard or a storm popped up somewhere.
Man, sorry to hear the slx isn’t working for you 😕. Oh and that type of barge wake was the final straw in ditching the Hobie for the autopilot. The Hobie was completely out of control and I ended up beached on the bank. Thought for sure I was flipping over.
You should see the wake some of giant ships create in the spi jetties by Brownsville. Horrible ! Sucks all the water in then it comes back out farther than it was
Hey man quick question! What size line and how many yards are you putting on your 500 size nasci reel? I’ve got a Sahara 500 and looking to use some Varivas 0.8 ghm but idk how much I should put on it.
Awesome video bro always watching but honestly I don't think that's the right kayak for you lol!! That peddling man!! Looks tiresome even with the motor. But still caught some fish!!
@@MDLRFishing I had one crash my 22ft boat up on to Blue Water Atol beach. Filled my boat with water and sand. I thought it was going to roll it over. Very scary!
Sir, I think part of what you are getting used too, is simply getting used to a pedal kayak. I have a PDL 132 and have fished 10 miles round trip on some days. Of course, I excercise on my road bike 2 to 3 times a week. You just need to learn to pace yourself, weather you are pedal assiting on 5 or 3. Don't make it a race. Just fish like you used too. You will get you PDL sea legs soon and find a balance in all this. Tigh Lines! Keep Reeling!
@@MDLRFishing if you like a sweet wine you should try Texas South wind blackberry, it's so sweet you wouldn't think it was wine. They sell it at Spec's

"This is going to be troublesome" kayak proceeds to handle the wake like a beast lol
Always turn your bow and peddle into the swell. You could've easily rode that out. Stay safe. ~Capt. Kev.

I've ended up on the reeds because of skiffs buring by me in the main bayou of the marsh. NOT fun.

I dont see the great advanatage of this new boat. its a little faster is that is that all ? Does it have the most important feature ( spot lock) ?
There’s a lot more fishing to do from it.
