Update No.2 from dismasted Sailing Aquarius
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- We made it to Martinique. Circumnavigation is complete. But Aquarius is in terrible condition. So much to do and we are a bit lost. Insurance already sent survey, inspection starts, couple days later the broken masts removed and we just trying to keep up and not to crash. Extreme heat doesn't help either. We are not in a position mentally or physically to make full edited videos yet, just sharing what we can...
Anyways, join us as we share our experience and thoughts...
And thanks so much for watching 🙏
Stay tuned as next Friday 12PM EST we release a new video 🎥

Wow! Who can boast such a history on the final leg of an circumnavigation! Across the Atlantic without a mast! Glad you’re made it!
Glad you made it safely to shore. Now the work begins. And the fight with your insurance company.
That's going to be tough. The survey would have to conclude that the incident was not due to fair wear & tear; nor a maintenance deficiency nor some installation issue but to some unforeseeable, insurable event (like an out-of-season weather event).
Insurance not paying for that.
Hats off to you two. Job well done.
Cheers. Look on the bright side. you're alive.😊
Congratulations on your Circumnavigation!
Thank you!
Congratulations! Amazing!
Good luck guys!
Well done! And thanks for sharing your journey. Hoping you can find another Amel mast and get back to your journey. Stay well!
Glad to see this update with good news. Prayers answered!
So happy you guys are safe and completed a circumnavigation as well. Pity that the ending wasn't as planned but you both kept on going and persevered! As to the mast, I wouldn't be surprised if internal corrosion and age are a factor in the collapse. Be careful getting older masts.... All the best!!!
Yeah, I think internal corrosion is one of the only things that makes sense if basically everything was intact in the rigging. Maybe the motor inside the mast was causing some sort of electrical corrosion or even just having different metal in its mounting touching aluminium. Only other option that I can think of is that maybe one of the lower shrouds lost locking pin and got untightened over time.
We had our 35 year old mast sandblasted back to bare metal on re-rigging. We were astounded to find it in perfect condition inside and out.
Likely metal fatigue at a weak point in the mast like an exit point .These failures usually start that way ,a hole or an attachment concentrates stress and it fails there . That is why planes do not have square windows .
If it is a factory installation common to these boats that was the fail point they should let the Amel community know so everyone can check and monitor their boats . This is one advantage of a boat with larger production numbers , others can warn you of potential weak spots
Just a horrendous situation! Thank God you were not hurt and heavy weather did not damage you further. In Martinique you are safe. What an adventure! Bet that put hair on your chest!
Waiting for this one. You 2 have a bunch of folks emotionally invested in you. Me included. Good job Cap’n Ken and Admiral Z. ❤
Congratulations 🎉🎉
All the best..
Congratulations on your circumnavigation. Was so happy to hear you made it to Martinique. Good luck with the repairs to Aquarius! What a trip! Thanks for sharing.
Well done!it will be interesting to see what the surveyor/engineers report.and congratulations on your circumnavigation! 🎉
We are grateful for your safe arrival to land. Wishing you good repairs and new masts. Stay well and positive. Greetings from Auckland, New Zealand xx
You did amazingly. And thanks for highlighting us 😊 Was great welcoming you in and getting to know you both.
All fingers and toes accounted for and no sewing required on heads. Good to see you both safe.
Congratulations guy's on the circumnavigation! I'm glad you made it back safe and sound! Can always fix your boat !!! Cheers for update and 🍻
Congratulations on achieving your circumnavigation. Certainly not as you imagined or deserved. Your determination, strength of character and outlook are fantastic. Huge respect ❤
Big congratulations on the circumnavigation! Thanks also for bringing us along.
Amazing , you put new meaning to the expression 'Going that extra mile' , you did 1200 of them!
Kudos to the two of you. So glad you made it safely.
Thanks for the update, wish you a lot of luck and wisdom in the repairs. Keep us posted please!👍
Great to see you have got the crossing done..... huge weight off your shoulders and the end of your nightmare situation.... Nice to see everyone helping you and it must be forever humbling... the feeling of that support.... Seen a lot of your videos... not all of them! But its been fantastic being a voyeur to your journey.... Congratulations.... sleep well both! Cheers.....
Yeah is it an amazing how people are so willing to shell out their money for rich people?
If they only did the same thing for poor people the world might be a nicer place.
Thank you for the update. Frankly that a boat that is maintained to your standard could have such a failure is incredible. I goes to show how complex boats are. I cannot wait to hear why the surveyor found
Me too, wish to hear what caused the collapse of the mast
So happy you made it safely to land!!
Congratulations! There was a company in Turkey as well that is producing new masts at a very competitive price. When you look for segmented masts that can be put together with rivets that could be a solution too regarding transportation (costs).
Congratulations on completing the circumnavigation! Considering this last leg, an incredible achievement! Praying that the insurance/survey/refit goes as smoothly as possible and that Aquarius is returned to her fullest glory!🎉⛵️🙏🏻❤️🎉
I cannot imagine the relief you must have felt on arriving!
Martinique is a great place too stay for a while. You folks are resilient and have a great attitude. God bless you both. Who knows what life will bring you next. Aquarius will survive!!
After going through a lot of footage, I found one boat that had the mast folded up like yours, same place. In slow motion it became very clear that that is a weak spot when sailing downwind and broaching. In your case it could have been more if a material fatigue, after all the years.
I am so happy you and Aquarius are safe ❤️. I can see on your faces that you are tired and disappointed. Keep confident. I am sure you will find new masts and will be providing us with amazing videos very soon. Take care. All my positive thoughts. Lauric
I so happy you guys made it ! What a story ! Cheers !
Well done, guys! You have learned so much good stuff that you can share with us all... bloody well done!
Cheers to you both...you are a great team!
Congrats so glad you made it to land!
Congratulations on the circumnavigation! Even if it's bittersweet at this point, the way you handled this last leg of your journey is another example for the rest of us.
Hoping for the best possible outcome with inspection and insurance. Enjoy your days there!
Congratulations on getting to Martinique and finishing your round the world best of luck with the work to come.
So happy you made it safely. Good luck in repairs.
I'm so glad to see you safe and sound. I think you totally deserved a night out with friends. God bless and good luck with the recovery and I'm totally looking forward to following you're next chapter. PS. Great to see the sailing world coming together to help. Put's a bit of humanity in our sometimes not so good world. Thanks to all.
just take your time guys .so happy you both and Aquarius are safe .
Huge congratulations on the circumnavigation! And thank goodness you guys made it safely.
Feeling for you guys. Happy to hear you guys have insurance
Soooo good to see you alive, well and even smiling again after this nightmare experience of the worst kind!!!👍❤
And, first observation: another cheers to Amel - the mast went down, and she still looks as if the hull and superstructure are not badly damaged! That's a win in all distress!
Again: all my warmest wishes to you and the boat!
Your very welcome !
Most important is you made it. With out injuries. The boat and all that needs doing to repair what needs repairing will be done. You do not need to apologize for not videoing on any of the platforms. You had more important things to take care of. Once you get everything sorted that needs to be I am sure you'll bless us with your happy smiles.
Catch you next video when you are ready I know I will be around . All the Best.
thanks for any update in any format anytime you care to share...well done saving Aquarius! and glad that all is manageable now, hoping for the best outcome possible.
So Glad you are safe and sound in Martinique!
What a positive video you’ve just put out when I’m sure you’ve both been through all sorts of emotions! The sign of true sailors in my book! Good luck with the refit ❤
You guys are absolute troopers. Well done for dealing with such a difficult situation!
Hi guys sorry to hear about your fritening experience. You did such a great job working through this awful tragedy. I'm so happy that you managed to keep it together and save your vessel.
Cheers Michael
Phew! You are safe and in one piece and that is a great relief. Carry on and tally ho and away you go. May fair winds tickle your aft.
BZ on your circumnavigation. Amazing story and very glad you made it across the Atlantic Ocean safely.
Enjoy your well deserved rest at the hotel. And I am hoping for you that the Survey and Insurance will allow Aquarius to recover his ful capacity to sail around the world with both of us. Take care & Kind regards.
Thanks for the update and congrats ! Now I can put my lower jaw in its proper place ; it was dangling on the floor since last week!
I’m glad you guys made it safely to le marin. Hopefully you get all the work and insurance stuff sorted out quickly so that you really enjoy what you’ve accomplished.
So glad you are safe and congrats on the circumnavigation
Awesome. Glad you both are safe and well.
Congratulations to both of you on the complete circumnavigation! I am so glad you made it to Martinique, was checking every day for updates and got a bit worried, so happy to see this video. All the best to you, and look forward to seeing what you do next!
Cheers for a safe arrival. Looking forward to leaning the cause. When repairs done you will be ready for the next trip around the world. I would say relax but I am sure you have a lot of work to do before relaxing.
CONGRATULATIONS Ken and Z on your circumnavigation!! You guys are tough as nails I’m not sure most would have made it through the double dismasting!!! Good luck in finding a new mast and working with the insurance company I really hope the root cause can be found on how and why this occurred. A dismasting is the last thing I was thinking about for Aquarius still can’t believe what happened! Don’t forget to video the boat repair progress!
Congrats you made it & arrived safely
Well Done. Respect for your seamanship under crisis conditions. Hope all goes better for you both in the refurbishment
Glad you both are safe
You guys have such a fantastic attitude! Glad you're back safe.
Gratulations! You can be very proud about handling the desaster, about your Circumnavigation, about your Videos, about sharing your life with others for 7 years, about your nautical skills, about, about, about....all the best, Thomas
Congratulation. Well done. And as always, tough times are part of what makes the true adventure.
You guys melt my heart, hats off for you two.
I don’t know if I could be a cool as you two if I had just gone through what you did. As if circumnavigation wasn’t enough you finished of with a masterful bit of survival and seamanship.
Congrats for completing the circumnavigation! Hope you can fix Aquarius rapidly.
I am glad to hear that you have arrived safely in Martinique. I hope you are able to rest and recover well both physically and emotionally from this experience.
My admiration to both of you for the energy and courage you have shown in overcoming this ordeal and recovering almost all the equipment and the masts themselves.
I think you are exceptional sailors and people.
Best wishes for the whole process with equipment recovery, insurance and repairs.
I am still listening
Congratulations on your wonderful achievement especially in view of the last leg. So glad you are both safe and uninjured if a bit exhausted.
I hope everything goes smoothly with the insurance company but ...
Coincidentally I've been reading, in a UK newspaper, about a man and wife who, in 1973, were sailing their sailing boat across the Pacific when they were hit by a whale. The boat sank and they survived for many weeks before being rescued.
Best wishes for your endeavours to fix Aquarius.
I just finished watching a boat that was going to service and possibly replace all its chain plates. Another boat that dis masted in the pacific had a type of shackle that broke, it was far to light, stainless, and should have been twice as thick. That boat had a sailor diverted to them, the guy is quite experienced and shows the rigging parts that failed in great detail. Zingarro (sp?) is his channel, he saved the boat which was about half way out in the Pacific ! Best of luck guys. Congratulations guys, your safe ! (the Engine is quite often the weak link on a sail boat because most of the time its used infrequently., fortunately for you it held up but will probably need the impeller replaced right away ! )
Congratulations! Good luck!
🌎 Congratulations on your Circumvavigation ! 🌍. You made it even with misfortune with 1000 + to go - but with perseverance you made it. 🎉
Enjoy your rest and relaxation to renew your bodies, souls and spirits.
Thanks for keeping us in the loop whenever you can.
Congratulations on you circumnavigation 🎉❤so glad your safe n sound rest up and recuperate ⛵️❤
Bravissimi grande avventura finita bene
Awesome job guys! Your knowledge and grit served you well.
Survey and Insurance! There is your next topic for a video. A topic most of us know very little about unless you owned a large boat before. Fact is, these things can happen to anyone for a variety of reasons. Anything from bad maintenance, bad installation to manufacturing faults can lead to disasters. My question, how do you protect yourself financially from these events? What does an insurance covering this cost for a boat like this and what processes are involved (surveys etc) to actually see your damage covered?
After 15 years this will be a good story - telling somebody in front of a good fireplace. Ok here in Norway it is minus 12c - fireplace is up and warming me and my wife Lilly, but no story about dismasting to tell.
Good to see you safe and well - best of all wishes for the future.
So good to see you both.
THANK GOD you are OK!!!!!!! WHEW!!!!!!! CHEER S and GOD BLESS!!!! No Injuries!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏😍😍😍😍😍😍
Wish you all the best with insurance situation.so happy to see you safe in port!! so enjoy your break because you both sure earned it!! You both did a fantastic job out there and are now safe!! Well done Aquarius!!
Oh my! What a way to conclude your journey. Now life has thrown you another task. Good luck finding a mast. Can you get one from Amel?
Glad you made it back!
Dear friends, your creations are our creations, your challenges are our challenges and the ways you respond is our way. your luck and your connections are also ours please know that we are all connected and that you are the best of ourselves. Be blessed both of you in your choices and your future endeavours.
Enhorabuena por vuestra vuelta al mundo. Sois geniales.
I`m a big fan of you! Congratulations on the loop, and i have to say, it was terrifying from one hand, but...., the way you manage the situation..., big wow...
You are truly amazing sailors, both of you. And amazing couple....
All best for you!
Was it forestay ?
I can't believe how huge that ship was compared to your sailboat. Do you have more video of that fuel transfer that you can post? That kind of stuff blows my mind and I would love to see it.
You made it, and the boat is, apart from the rig, intact. Now it's just a matter of insurance claims and compensation. You're in the right place, and you have video documentation to proof what you did and didn't do. Everything is now out of your hands until there's a decision... Good luck and congratulations on your circumnavigation!🎉❤
I will be impressed if this ultimately proves to be a successful insurable item. Ultimately, the survey would have to establish that this incident waa not due to maintenance or fair wear and tear but some unforeseeable circumstance. Not impossible but the odds are challenging.
Take a look at a boat kite system for backup or supplementary propulsion.
You had a really tough time of it. I hope this doesnt mean the end of Aquarius and the video's. What a way to end the circumnavigation.
Well. Life isn't all about comfort and peace, and circumnavigations doesn't seem either. Congratulation on both making that and making it. 🙂
I think many are very interested in the work around the insurance.
I am so proud of you guys , and thanks GOD you made it safe and sound,
I'm pretty sure things will turn well and if anything this will just make you stronger than what you already are!
looking forward to your next video
and let us share with you more coming adventures as you guys Rock :)
All the best with the survey and insurance hope all works well.
Take care and have fun and the hotel:)
So glad to see that you made it safely to Port. Very scary accident.
Hey guys, really good to hear that all of that maintenance on the motor paid off and found you safe on the upside. Gotta love a diesel! At first I would have thought that hardware thru the mast may have set up advanced galvanic corrosion but now - I wonder if not going DFARS on the standing rigging had more to do with any failure?
what a way to finish a circumnavigation,Glad that you both are well .time for your self first and then tend to the boat,
Happy your safe wow what a disaster
Congrats guys, you made it!!. the last leg was a real nail biter. one for the history books.
I still think you should consider an aftermarket/reproduction mast. Any OEM mast will be 20+ years old and without detailed knowledge You have to make assumptions about the history of how it was cared for.
