In today's episode, we dived into talking about the S1H versus the S5iiX. Getting into the nitty gritty of specs, features, and designs. We also discussed how Lumix has cameras come out ahead of their time for consumers to be able to grow into the camera system instead of buying a new camera each year.
Context on Oli: Oli and I met about 3-4 weeks ago at NAB 2024 through a mutual friend. We roomed together in an Airbnb for the week and bounded a ton over Lumix, life, and other similar things! Oli is an extremely talented filmmaker and now becoming a content creator, so I thought it would be great to get his perspective on the S1H vs S5iiX and what he hopes to see in the future for Lumix!

Awesome testimony! Praise the Lord. 🙌🏻 Blessings from Finland!
Thanks dude! Appreciate that 🙌🏽
I would love for Lumix to make the S1 II in a regular DSLR body with high megapixel sensor still very video capable for around $3500 and the S1H II in a cinema style body something FX6 or Canon C70 focused on video features around $5000
They had the bs1h was the same camera
My guys!
Love you both!
Thanks so much for having me, and building such a cool community behind lumix! 🤘🏽 You rock man!
Incredible testimony man, with your siblings names in that order, that's beyond beautiful!
@@watzmaaname oh man, that part gets me every time! Thank you so much for the kind words! 🙌🏽
Dope! Feels good to be part of the Lumix + Christian Alliance! 🙌
Yes!!
🙌🏽 I’m stoked about that too!
Jesus is always up!!!
Yes sir. Jesus always!
Great guest with wn incredible testimony. GH6/GH5 user here, brethren. Nice upload!
I would expect the S1hii to be a sort of Canon c70 or R5C... It'd make sense somehow. A chonker with new IO and internal ND
Honestly if they just use the exact same camera with PDAF, 4k120p no crop, and 6k60 open gate, under $4300 I’m in.
Honestly … I would be in too! And I don’t think that’s to much to ask for 🤷🏽♂️
I like image S1h better, but not only that. IBIS is better on S5II but look better on S1H more natural, on S5II is like more digitaly corrected but biggest advantage is tilt screen, i can't handle the flip screen, it's make harder for me to hold camera steader for handheld shooting.
Yes, both the S1 and S1H have better image. It is clear that Panasonic has made some changes inside the processing to make IBIS better but at the cost of image quality and natural feel of stabilization.
Honestly if they can just make the current one with phase detect AF, 4k120p and 6k60p open gate
Sold! Would love to see some more "Future Proofing" Features as well maybe internal ND's, RAW, who knows 🤪
@@MatthewDangyou I would love that but will buy either way 😂
As far as ND vs. IBIS, I think it's more likely we see both but with the loss of the physical shutter. Which would limit the camera's appeal for photos (unless they do a global shutter sensor, which is probably a couple more generations off for Panasonic, as Sony will most likely keep that for themselves for quite a while), which means it only makes sense on a video-focused body that drops any pretense of being a hybrid. So an S1Hii or a new box-style model.
Personally $4K is a bit rich for my blood body-wise, so I am hoping more for an S1 replacement around $2500 or maybe $3000, with a faster sensor than the current cameras, and the nicer build and features of the S1 over the more mid/entry-level S5 bodies.
Sharper image on S5II is not because new phase detect autofocus, but image processing. Dan Hopkins on FB Lumix Group tested S5ii on pre production firmware, and compared it to S1h and difference was tiny, but after S5ii release he also saw that they change it on final firmware and image is definitly more sharper. Another culprit is BRAW - it remove that digital sharpening and noise reduction with RAW codecs, so it's not pdaf what make image worse IMO. Still don't know why Panasonic make that stupid move.
Exactly. I'd say the image is not only sharper but the details looks worse too, like if some sharpening were added to hide lower resolution. It's hard to choose the S5II over the S1 or S1H when you need to crop inside your footage. In fact the GH5 (2017) in Open Gate has much better image at low ISO. All people unable to see the difference don"t need 4K at all, even less 6K.
For keep the advance of S1 series 😂
I’ve been struggling with picking out a camera and I totally want in on the Christian Lumix community. 😅
😂🙏🏽
LUMIX s5 iix make the jump and you won’t be looking back
100% S5iiX and I have zero complaints
Absolutely! If I didn’t have my S1H, I would jump in on the S5iiX!
yeah tbh I'm predicting that there's new hardware in the S1Hii or even BS1Hii that makes it another slam dunk. I feel weird being a fan of Lumix from the outside.
It's not weird! I've been one for years. Hopefully can get my hands on one sooner.

@jon112media Honestly, they always do come out with something that kind of moves the market. So I wouldn’t be surprised!
Sounds like S2H gonna kill burano/fx line/canon cinema line.
Not sure if they keep the same image processing.
It’s gonna be something magical that’s for sure!
So you two don’t think the s5iix is competing with the fx3? Can you explain why it is or isn’t?
Well sure all cameras are competing with each other. But these cameras are in different price ranges, different features. There is a crop on 4K 60fps on the S5iiX but it is also $2000 less than the S5iiX. It is like comparing two cars that are completely different price ranges, granted the lower price “car” offers a ton more features and is better for the value overall IMO
My point S1H wasnt same point as s5II. Just due to the new af tech you should pick the s5 IIx .
Because the new s1h will benefit from the new af technology.
Its more a debate wether should you pick a s5 for less than 1k or a s5 IIx.
Add one thing in the debate, Kolari is making an OPLF mod for s5 s5 II or s1h.
Imagine you pick a used s5 and add a modded OPLF filter ( 600 $ ) and you got a great camera with no moire and anti aliasing. wich make it a better cinematic and good image than necessarly a s5 II .
As a filmaker travelling, the AF is so garbage on previous panasonic cameras ( ruined a lot of footage ive got) that Im willing to just move to s5 II just because of AF not the others features.
I just wait for their new " s1h " to see what they got
Very interesting, didn’t even think about nor did I know it was possible to add a OPLF mod to the s5!
But same! Still waiting to see on what they do with that new “S1Hii”. I feel it’s going to be so sweet!
@@Theamosfilms DIdnt know either, this would have made me switch to buy a s1h. But getting a s5 + making this mod nowdays is more worth it if you want to do short movies than going s5 II. Even if for me as much as I was used to MF lenses. This AF on lumix camera was so garbage in event lighting.
This is why I keep my S5II for now, but only when I need good autofocus, like tou said the AF of the S5 and S1H is really bad. When I see some people saying the AF of the S5 is very good in video, I really doubt they used the camera a lot, I can say the same for people saying they don't see the difference in video quality between the S5II and S5.
When the S1HII will come, with I hope better image processing, I will sell the S5II asap, really don't like the image of this camera.
@@slows728 Af is good yeah when there is Sun facing the face , good lighting.
But in even like a concert or for me ( badminton top tournament or esport event ) when there is a lot of light changes . Damn it start defocusing and then trying to look for a subject but stayed unfocus ( even with some lumix lenses) For example I have a 6d mkII for photo and video quality is totally crap...( but I can see how much better AF was despite the camera is from 2017
) If s1hII comes with somehow a internal ND ... Im gonna save for sure to buy it. I have some Manual lenses and Im used t o it, but sometimes you operate on gimbal and you definately needs an reliable AF .
@@Ey3shi3ldtv Yes when you have good contrast, the AF is ok, but even in good light when you have shallow depth of field, like when using the 85mm f1.8 or the 70-200mm f2.8, the AF is really bad. In fact the AF works well with a lens like the 20-60mm f3.5/f5.6.
Yes the S1HII with internal ND would be great, but even a S1HII with the same AF than the S5II and the same image quality than the S1H could be perfect for me.
Dudes here with a Crystal ball talking about unanouncement products 😂
👀 well Dustin on another episode was right about the ARRI log so we shall see
