I've heard this song from Joni Mitchell in the documentary "The Bridge". It couldn't came in better time of the movie. Even though it doesn't remind me of good things the song carries such a great emotion
Amazing song. I LOVE seeing/hearing Vinnie Colaiuta play this. What a line up in this performance. David Sanborn did this song on his Time Again CD with Steve Gadd on drums. Another great performance of this tune.
+lovebggggg Joni later recorded a piano version of this song that is also very nice. Man From Mars, btw, was Joni's cat. He wandered off one night and she never got him back.
This just in, a mere eighteen years later: she got him back within a few weeks (after he'd made his point, seemingly-- he knew he was a superior cat important enough for, say, a Joni Mitchell to write a killer song about, and he evidently felt he wasn't getting the respect that status called for!) See jonimitchell.com/music/song.cfm?id=152. Cheers.
I was fortuned, I discovered Joni years before Chaka , I love them both. Joni for powerful writings, Chaka for voice (I think she can sing a Phone book ) And I love there mingling of "black and white " (which in real music doesn't exist)
For everyone who wants a great story, you can find the whole thing on Joni Mitchell's website. Look for the lyrics to this song and below it you will find several paragraphs of why Man from Mars left and what happened when he returned. A complex relationship definitely -- a cat with real personality who was not going to put up with a scolding.
MARK THAT IS ABSOLUTELY STUNNING! SORRY I ONLY DISCOVERED YOUR CHANNEL NOW-WAS SPECIFICALLY SEARCHING FOR CHAKA'S VERSION OF ONE OF MY FAVE JONI TRX..WHAT A SOLO! RESPECT!
Very, very soon.....Chaka recorded a whole CD of Joni covers a few years ago, and it's in final mixing. We should be seeing it in the next year, hopefully on the sooner end of that. It's been long awaited. Many of us thought it was just never going to get a release, but a recent interview quoted her saying it's almost done..... I have to believe this will be on there, as well as the amazing cover of "Hissing" she's done live for years.....
She's also covered the hissing of Summer lawns live, and recorded hejira. She sings on Joni's recording of Dreamland and I'm pretty sure she's on cotton avenue as well
I love Joni Mitchell’s version, but Chaka Khan’s velvet voice just adds that little extra soul!
HOW MUCH I LOVE THIS ENTIRE CONCERT! Had a DVD as a girl, watched it hundred times and this is my favorite song!
Mine too
I've always loved Chaka Khan and even more now after hearing her sing one of my musical hero's songs - Joni Mitchell.

great song, great singer, great band ! Speechless......

This song touches my heart in a very profound way. Thank you Chaka!

It's on the DVD "Jazz Central presents Chaka Khan"
Aaaaaand three years later, still no sign of a release.
I had no idea Chaka Khan did a cover of Joni’s song. She did a decent job.
She actually covered some more: Help me, Two grey rooms etc. 😊❤
She looovves Joni, Chaka is actually working on a Joni tribute album that will hopefully be out this year.
They are pals and hang out together.
She's also covered the hissing of Summer lawns live, and recorded hejira. She sings on Joni's recording of Dreamland and I'm pretty sure she's on cotton avenue as well
Decent ? Who are you ? We've never heard about you, neither writing nor singing ? You cannot cook , but shit after eating it seems .......
What concert is this? Is it available on DVD?
Awesome. But did they sedate the audience?
Mars is the god of war - did a line get crossed? DV or verbal assault?
