  • Pulling the trailer up a mountain road in 4Lo and bad things happened... UPDATE: 10/20/2017 - Truck is fixed. The pinion gear shaft had too much play in the planetary gear set and the reduction gear slipped out of alignment. When under load, the problem showed up. Ford fixed the transfer case without any trouble and the dealer and just about everyone I've talked to said the way I was using it was the way it was designed to work. Sounds like this was a one-off failure.

    I don’t understand these comments about using 4low. 4low is made to be used exactly how you used it on a steep hill towing instead of wasting fuel in 4hi. Which in 4low he has more control of his load as well if he were coming down a steep gravel hill using 4low.

    • @zfilmmaker
      @zfilmmaker 6 років тому +4

      I second what you say, I pull a trailer with 18 large square bales weighting 1500 lb each up some steep hills in 4Lo all day when making hay. No way could it be done in 4Hi and maintain control. None of these people know who EpicCowlick is and all the SuperDuty's he's owned and the advice he's given on the Ford forums. Most of us learned everything we know from him. I did. To the naysayers do your due diligence, Google his name.

    Wow, this blows dude! I've had 6 Ford trucks, including my current 2015 F250, with 60000 miles on it. Been towing trailers, boats, and fifth wheels through the mountains, deserts, and dunes and have never had this issue. Hope the dealership takes care of you quick!

    4L (4X4 Low)
    Uses extra gearing to provide maximum power to all four wheels at reduced speeds. Intended only for off road applications such as deep sand, steep grades or pulling heavy objects. (straight from the owners manual) the only disclaimer Ford states is This mode is not intended for use on dry pavement. Use on a dirt road up a steep grade should not have caused a failure.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  6 років тому +2

      christopher wynn Agreed. The only thing that makes sense is that the part was bad (most likely) or the heavy weight of the fifth wheel over the rear axle prevented the needed slippage and the sharp switch backs of the mountain road was just too much.

    Cool good to see they fixed it! I’m considering buying a new 2018 F350. I haven’t had much luck with my current car and the brand or dealers standing behind the product so far I’ve been seeing for the most part Ford is standing behind their trucks. I feel the overall quality of a product doesn’t fully define a company, the way a company handles a defect to me defines a company.

      Lol. If you're talking about a follow-up to this event, no video is coming. I know, bummer, but I couldn't get in with the tech to see the repair as it happened. It would have been great because there's very little on the internet about this new transfer case. C'est la vie. Ford fixed it and it works great. More info in the video description.

    So sorry to hear about the transfer case. Hope it is corrected ASAP with minimal down time. Doesn't appear to a common issue but should be a straight forward warranty repair (though costly for Ford lavour/parts).

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +1

      Pretty sure it will work out. It's a straight forward failure and just what warranties are designed to cover. First time for me though.

  • @GrillingNetwork
    @GrillingNetwork 7 років тому

    Sorry to hear about that!! I had a similar experience. We had a 2 week vacation to see the Total Solar Eclipse.
    The day before our trip, I noticed the DPF Regeneration error on the Console. I thought, this will clear once I start towing.
    About 1 hour into our trip, heading up the Grapevine my truck lost power.
    Apparently the DPF regeneration didn’t clear and the truck went into limp mode.
    I had to unhook and have my truck towed to a dealership. They performed a manual Registration.
    I am now more cognizant if making sure I finish my Registrations 😀

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому

      Wow, that's a pain. Hopefully you got to see the eclipse. We made the same trip only we went to southern Idaho. DPF regens are important and they need to be allowed to finish or what happened will indeed happen. It's a bit harder if you use your truck for short trips around town.

    It doesn't matter what make you buy, they all have their own issues. I've always owned Fords but I've never had an issue. When I bought my new '17 F450, it went into 4wd without a hitch. Just keep in mind your truck is not designed to run 4 x 4 full-time. I wish you all the best with your situation. Let me know what happens.

  • @BroadcastBuddy
    @BroadcastBuddy 7 років тому +2

    Ouch, I wish you the best and hope you just get a whole new case. Keep in mind you keep driving that when there could be metal fragments in the oil, slowly damaging the main shaft bearings.
    I have a 2017 on order with a manual t-case, hope this isn't a common issue with the new Borg Warner cases. Doesn't seem to be tho.

      Manual T-case is the way to go. Less crap to break down.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому

      Engaging wasn't the problem. The main chain slipped over the teeth. I'm afraid this would have happened whether it was a lever or a button. The lever might have helped getting out of 4Lo. There was so much pressure initially that the motor couldn't disengage. Had to pull forward a little bit to let the motor shift out of 4Lo.

    • @BroadcastBuddy
      @BroadcastBuddy 7 років тому +1

      This has everything to do with engaging. From 4 hi to low, you have a sliding synchronizer that engages the planetary carrier. The case locked up due to running essentially two ratios at once, then the gears bound until the Chevy removed tension. The chain didn't slip, it's impossible unless the case collapses or the chain physically broke. The grinding sound is from the syncro ring essentially trying to engage.
      If anything it's a testament to how strong the case is, usually the case will crack apart if a gear binds.

    I know you say its fixed but I watched this video a number of times and you say your switching to 4 low but you actually switched to 4 H. Your not suppose to change to 4 h from neutral its made to be shifted on the fly from drive to 4 h . 4l is from neutral. My understanding from Ford is that doing so will miss align the planetary gear set and cause the grinding or make it so it will not shift properly and will jump out of gear.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  5 років тому +1

      The camera perspective is pretty much straight-on and shows the switch in between 4H and 4L. When the switch is viewed from the driver position it is 4L. Notice the indicator on the dash is 4L when shifting from N to D. The transfer case was switched to 4L. 4H can be engaged from any gear including P, R, N, D, M, 2 or 1 whether stationary or moving (up to a certain speed).

  • @saywhat8635
    @saywhat8635 Рік тому

    That does suck. I’m not complaining but I was always thought to use 4 wheel drive only when you are slipping and then get back to 2 wheel drive as soon as you can since your front wheels will turn faster than the back wheels and if they can’t slip a little than you are putting a lot of strain on the system which is never good for to long
    Living out in the boondocks a good chunk of my life using my 4 wheel drive at least a couple times a week I never had issues. Just something to ponder

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  Рік тому

      That would have actually worked in this case. I had 4Lo engaged AND the rear diff locked which in itself wouldn't have been a problem. The issue was the heavy weight over the rear axle didn't allow the tires to slip at all. Something eventually had to give.

    Sorry owner fault NOT truck. 4X4 low is only intended for extreme situations. Not driving a gravel dust and a tiny 1% incline.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +2

      By that logic, the transfer case was doomed to fail. If it failed on a road you describe, it would explode in an "extreme" situation every time. The t-case is designed to do exactly what it was doing. Still waiting to hear from an engineer but the t-case should handle max towing weight and cause the wheels to slip without failure.

      EpicCowlick what exactly happened to the transfer case

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  6 років тому +1

      The 5th wheel put enough weight on the rear axle that the wheels could not slip on the dirt road. The tight switchback turns on the road put too much strain on 4Lo. Pinion gear slipped out of alignment with the planetary gear set. They replaced pretty much all components in the transfer case including the oil pump. All this is a guess. One mechanic said he thought the oil pump failed and the gear were dry. No one knows for sure.

    Had a Ford truck for the job I had before and I always had problems with things 4WD related. Hubs, xfer case.. Seems to have been a problem with Ford for a long time. I personally have never owned a Ford truck and will not. Never had issues with my RAM trucks and I have had many. Was thinking about giving Ford a shot and maybe get a 450 dually to replace my 3500 RAM dually...not now! I will just stick with Dodge. Hope it all turns out well for you and good luck with the truck. I know that would have ruined my trip mood.

      This is the first Ford of many for me where this has happened. I had an old Excursion way back that had an issue with the auto hubs. I replaced the vacuum seal ring on that and it worked fine. The Ford auto hubs do need attention when they get old but this is the first time I've experienced a transfer case problem. I cam from Chevs 20 years ago and have loved the reliability of the Fords.

      There are many things I like about the Ford trucks. I like the interior better than the Ram as well as the layout of the controls. I also like the fact that Ford offers a truck camper package...but...Ram now offers airbags. To me all is for naught if the drive system fails and even the remote chance is still a chance. I suppose I should just say I love trucks..all of them and that I love the cummings 6 the most...what a power plant! Ford does make a very good looking truck inside and out.

      Agreed. The big three all make great trucks and the differences are all arguable. When you think of the amount of work they do and the relative luxury we get to enjoy while doing it, well complaints are just splitting hairs. Good thing there's a choice for different tastes.

    Sorry that sucks. Doesn't sound like a Ford part failed it sounds like the Borg Warner transfer case failed. I own a landscaping company and all my trucks are Super Dutys and I never really thought about this before until I watched your video but is it ok to put it into 4 low while pulling a trailer?? I could see for high but not for long. Just curious but great video. Good luck

      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +1

      That's the very question that needs to be answered. Everyone I've talked to said they've done the same many times and not had a problem. I have yet to learn if using 4Lo like this is bad practice or just a bad part. The dealer didn't think I did anything wrong. There have been a couple of comments here that say it's wrong but no information to back that up. I have yet to hear from an engineer or someone who can articulate if this is a designed use or not.

    • @ninersforlife7682
      @ninersforlife7682 7 років тому

      EpicCowlick I understand makes sense I wouldn't think there be anything wrong with it but you never know plus the weight of the trailer might make a difference. I have pulled trailers plenty of times in 4 high but I don't ever remember doing it in 4 low. before. Sounds like to me might just be a bad transfer case because I remember one of your earlier videos didn't you have a problem with it shifting into 4 low when you were trying to go up a hill on your property??

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому

      I don't think that was related. It turned out to be just slow to engage front hubs and it only happened that one time and never since. I've used 4X4 and 4Lo countless times since then and every time they engage quickly. I still have to hear from an engineer on the intended use of 4Lo and ask if it should be used with heavy trailers.

    • @EpicCowlick

      The synchro-mesh gear and and some other parts bit the dust. The Borg Warner transfer case is brand new and parts are still on national back order. I'm driving a F150 loaner until it gets fixed.

    So you made it up in 2wd but were towing in 4low on a twisty road with the differentials locked. Hmmm!

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  5 років тому

      The rear differential wasn't locked. 4Lo was used because the tires slipped on a switchback lower down the mountain. Not fun when there's a heavy 5th wheel trying to pull everything backwards down the mountain. The reduction gear in the t-case eventually said enough is enough.

    You were not supposed to use 4L for high speeds, 4H is better or just 2WD unless it spins

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  3 роки тому +1

      I don't think we ever got over 15-20 mph. 2wd definitely spun on a corner until 4X4 was locked in. And being a pretty steep hill, the extra gear reduction of 4Lo was very helpful. The problem was that the weight of the fifth wheel didn't allow the tires to slip on the sharp corners. Something had to go and in that case, it was the transfer case reduction and planetary gears.

    Awesome, older Chevy pulling the mighty power stroke up the hill, stop making excuses for the Ford, it should not have broke, super duty is a name not what it can do, and yes I’ve owned a dozen ford trucks

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  6 років тому +1

      Like and old Clydesdale pulling a heavy wagon, it was awesome You have to keep it in perspective though. That new Ford was pulling nearly 10 tons up a steep mountain road with almost 4,000 pounds over the rear axle turning sharp switchbacks. All that diesel power and weight on that steep mountain road didn't allow the rear wheels to slip as they should have and eventually something had to give. It was the gear in the transfer case that said enough and gave up the ghost. I've had trucks in the past also and there's no way I would have even attempted this pull with that technology.

  • @ictpilot
    @ictpilot 6 років тому

    Should have been in 4hi. That would have worked here fine.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  6 років тому

      Perhaps. Mostly the issue was caused by the extra weight over the rear axle and did not allow the rear tires to move at different speeds. They bound up on the sharp switch backs and sent all that torque up into the transfer case where it finally slipped gear teeth and failed. It was just a tough situation. Steep road making me think I needed 4 wheel drive but probably could have made the climb in 2wd.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +2

      The particular section of road where it broke is not representative of the whole road. In the switchbacks, the road was rutted with loose gravel and 2wd would not have made it. I'm waiting to hear from the engineers if 4Lo is designed to be used with a heavy trailer up a fairly steep mountain road. There are a few like yourself who say 4Lo should not have been used but 95% say it shouldn't have been a problem. I'm very interested of course and will relay any qualified information I receive.

      Ricardo Arevalo That's the first thing I thought. 4lo is almost always for descent and uneven steep terrain (well much steeper). 4lo to 4hi is not any more effective in such conditions. I've pulled 16' enclosed tool trailers up LOGGING roads in Wyoming to do work and never once did anyone on the entire project think 4lo was a good idea. His truck made it up in 2wd. Over thinking it. Live and learn I guess.

    I was going to say - Ford is crap, but then I heard you were using 4lo on a normal road. If you used even 4hi you could have easily broken your transfer case as well. If you want 4 wheel traction on a normal road buy a car with a full time 4wd not a part time. Like a landcruiser. I know that application is totally different but bottom line is it's your fault that transfer case is screwed.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +10

      4Lo on a dirt road is completely acceptable as per Ford. 4Lo or 4X4 is not to be used on an asphalt or concrete road unless on snow or ice. This failure was not driver error.

    • @stevenruble3934
      @stevenruble3934 7 років тому +4

      0dq0 Your statement is incorrect on a gravel road there is no risk of binding. How is he supposed to tow a fifth wheel with a land cruiser?

    • @0dq0
      @0dq0 7 років тому +2

      Landcruiser example was for the sake of full-time vs part-time. Don't cling to words. The road I saw in a video is almost perfect. Who would engage a 4hi even? It's non of my business if course. You can do as you like but don't complain later when you break your transfer case. It was plain stupid. Ask anybody who knows what off-road driving really is and he will tell you that you engage 4lo in only certain conditions, definitely not like in the video.

    • @0dq0
      @0dq0 7 років тому

      And also research a device called "towall". You can tow a fifth wheel with a capable SUV. Not talking about landcruiser so don't start.

    • @EpicCowlick
      @EpicCowlick  7 років тому +7

      I'm not interested in belaboring the point but it was a gravel road. Especially loose on sharper turns where 4Lo is extremely helpful. The last thing I wanted was to start up around a turn and spin the rear wheels with a heavy trailer behind.
