I’m a 16 minute 5k runner and I can only last at Mo’s pace for 800m. Then when you look at Cheptegi I can’t even last at that pace for 800! It’s insane how I could rock up to most parkruns and be finished before people hit halfway meanwhile these machines can cruise at your flat out pace.
@@HeftyFromage Faster than most non-pro athletes over 30 can sprint. The human body adjusts to what you train for though so I bet if Mark trained to do short distances he could improve 10% or so. Down to a nearly flat 13 srconds. Getting under 13 would be very difficult at 56, large part of it is VO2 max and fast hip flexors along with very strong quads, hams, and glutes.

I read an interview with Mo saying he considers you the best duck pond runner of the last 30 years! High praise and just goes to show he knows his place is on the track and not on a real mans terrain.
As someone who's both hiked and biked across the USA... what i find most interesting with videos like this and my own personal experience is how much room for improvement the average person has. First week of my hike i was struggling (gear + mountains) to do 12-15 miles per day. By the end... 30 miles a day was a cake walk. With the bike the first week was about 40-50 miles a day. By the end of 4 weeks we were hitting 120 miles in a day. Same results for most of the people I met doing similar things. Therefore today... I see guys like Mo and see what is possible vs. the old me that would just shrug my shoulders and mutter "impossible".

I ran in 42 minutes & search ‘how to run a faster park run’ Your story & humour got me hooked straight away. I listen carefully & used your tips & after 17 Park runs I’ve run 30’24 at Reading Park run (Thames Valley) Keep up the good work. I’m gonna go to the track too..!
I tried this years ago, when I was a decent fell runner and could go under 37mins for a 10km on the road. I was one day doing 400m track reps for speedwork and realised that I was barely able to keep up the pace that Liz McColgan had at that time done for London Marathon, around 1:26 per lap. Sobering stuff
i saw Mo run live in person and it was like watching a different species the way he glides while moving was what shocked me the most you really dont get that from seeing it on the tv
It took me 20 years of 2-3 workouts per day 7 days a week to get my time for 10,000 under 31 minutes. Sadly my progression was rudely interrupted by a career-ending car crash. My point is that simply doing mileage will not improve your time on the track or on the road. That is why track athletes are so deadly on the road and not the other way around. Track training combines mileage, strength endurance and speed work, which are the perfect combination to running fast long distance. So add some track intervals to your training and you will see your time in the 10K plummit. Great video!!

YT just popped this up for me! I was a competitive distance runner in my younger years - I'm 51 now. This video is very well done! You nailed it. Even for people who distance running was their thing it is very hard to grasp what the world class are doing. You are dead on that at 6'6" and 220lbs you are not by any means the ideal build. If you are running sub20 for 5k at 48 years old that is nothing short of amazing! Hang in there! Best wishes in all your endeavors.
Absolutely mad. A 25 min 5km doesn't feel particularly slow but then you compare it to the 100m clip, soo much faster and then to sustain it. Sub 60s 400m seems like a pretty cool goal. Looking forward to the hyrox video

I do love how 'encouraging' Jen is in these videos! 😄 Anyways, as someone who has actually had sprint coaching from Carl Lewis (long story) I reckon that if you focussed more on using your upper body then you would do both the 100 and 400m faster. It makes a big difference.
Just wanted to thank you for your content. I lost roughly 13 stone over lockdown and running was a tool I used and ultimately fell in love with. However, once the gyms reopened I very much fell out of love with running and instead focused on the gym and ran very short distances post each session. Your videos however have made me fall in love with running again and I've refocused my weekly workout regime to incorporate more running and I'm loving every second. Keep doing what you're doing!
When I was running with the University team, some guy was also training there. He was just doing warmup, I was doing a 400 full on to keep up with him for one lap. He went on for another 10k. Kamiel Maase held the national record at the 10k at 28m and a bit at that point…
One of the cool things about sprinting is that a lot of the speed comes not from raw strength, but from the neuromuscular coordination that's required for your nervous system to get you to run that fast. The good news here is that nervous system adaptations can actually happen (relatively) quite quickly, meaning that for people without sprint training, it's possible to improve quite a bit in a short time just by getting practice at sprinting. I would bet that something as simple as doing 5x100m strides/sprints (with full recovery in between) 2-3 times per week for a month or so would net you a significant improvement both in 100m and 400m times. (even better, if you have a gradual uphill where you can do ~15-20 second strides working up to max speed - this can be substituted for some of the flat 100m sprints, allowing more power output from your legs with lower injury risk) You'd be amazed how much it's possible to improve at this just by getting some practice

Great video as always. I know you hate swimming and it's difficult to film but testing your swimming pace against Ian Thorpe would be hilarious. You could do it at an open water venue so filming easier :)
It is strange what people find engaging or not. I find running to be boring, but staring at the black line on the bottom of the pool whilst bashing up and down is something I can do for hours. I guess it's what you're used to. Having swum for over 20 years, maybe the boredom doesn't register anymore 🤣

@@MarkLewisfitness It's probably not the most financially responsible suggestion but getting athletics spikes would make you faster than carbon shoes on the track. Just using a pair of spikes would get you under the 400 m goal time for the video. Plus if you thought you felt fast with trainers on a track, spikes will make you feel about 10 times as fast. You will even be able to lean in through the corners like on a motorbike.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Ironically both motivating and daunting to see what elite runners can do. And you inspire me a lot to push myself, challenge myself and love running more. Thank you very much Mark! 😊
I'm 24 and have had terrible cardio and a bad diet my whole life. Since I have good muscle genes everyone thinks I'm fit because of how I look aesthetically 🤣. I started running a month ago now and did my first park run maybe 2 or 3 days after training. I was absolutely humbled seeing guys around your age flying past me while running with push chairs and children flying past me with ease. I was so worried I'd be last place and that I wouldn't be under 30 minutes. To my surprise I hit 24:44 but I'm aiming for sub 20 now. Like you also, I've never really ran on a track before so I was genuinely surprised when I saw how far 100m looks on the track and how long 400m on the track feels. My fitness has definitely improved mainly because I'm competitive and I train 6 days a week with the guy who introduced me training. Running is changing my life and I now have even more respect for athletes knowing that they'll perform to their best no matter how hard it is and they put sooooo much work in training it's unbelievable

My comment isn't specific to this video, but, having binged half your videos over the last month, it is clear that you absolutely would have got to the top at a sport, (perhaps rowing or cycling) had that been your goal. You can really see that when things start to get painful and tough, that's when your enjoyment kicks in (you may disagree but it's clear!) And that mindset is very rare I've found.
Thankyou for the inspiration mate, I am 230lbs and doing my first IM 70.3 in Stafford in 6 weeks. Running has always been tough but getting there slowly.
Incredibly interesting and informative video. I've loved athletics since I was a kid even though I'm no good at it myself. To see a real life athlete demonstrate just how fast the worlds best runners are moving is fascinating.
I just want to say thanks for the inspiration. I ran my very first 5k this weekend at the tender age of 48. 26:42.8. The goal was sub 30, crushed it. New goal, sub 25. I've got a 5 mile race scheduled in early May followed up by a 10k half way through the month. Thank you.
I just did a run 3 days ago…first one in I can’t remember when. 5.3k 31:43 I used to be fairly quick in my 20s, running 10ks around 36 minutes…I’ll be 64 next month… Most of my cardio these days is done on an indoor rower or walking with a weighted vest…
Fun video, the pace of track runners is mental, be careful to warm up loads. Normal warm up plus the drills you see the track people doing. I run lots however I have hurt myself on the track as you are way more up on your toes which hits your Achilles way more…👍
Great video which showed what I'd always suspected but didn't want to believe - we can't even match them for 400m! I love watching the 5k and 10k races as they wind up to the final sprint to the finish. The recent Men's Commonwealth 5k was a beautiful example with the 3 medallists neck and neck down the home straight. As your video shows we mere mortals are so slow in comparison.
Great vid. Your 400m time suffered from having a standing start. You'd do better with a flying start - maybe starting to run 50 metres before the line and crossing it already going at full tilt. Looking forward to the next video.
Great videos putting world class athletes into perspective! I sprinted sub 60 400m in my mid teens during relay races...but I would be absolutely spent / vomitting afterwards. Can't comprehend doing those for 12.5 laps

My son is ten and runs a 5K in 19:30 after 6 park runs. We really Enjoy your videos. I enjoy them because I’m mid 30s and need to lose weight. I run 5K in 23 minutes. Owen likes your videos because he thinks you’re funny and because you drop in technique nuggets of information. Either way, two fans of the videos here.
Thanks for these vids putting running into perspective. I only started a few weeks ago with a hatred of running having never run further than up the stairs, I was surprised to manage 5k within a couple of weeks and then knock it down to 29 mins on my second attempt. I'm very much not fit or in any sort of shape so I'm hoping with a bit more time it will come down. I'd settle for 25 mins, that seems an eternity away from where I am now.
Hi Mark, love the videos - just subscribed and need to get back in shape... I used to be a county level 400m runner and professional rugby player... A long time ago, I was at Kingston Athletics track doing pre-season 400m speed endurance runs 5 x 400m with a two minute rest between each run... Moses Kiptanui (world champ 3,000m steeplechase runner) along with two of his mates were running around the grass on the outside of the track chatting at the same pace that I was running on the inside lane of the track... They were there when I arrived and still going when I left... I was blowing big time and they didn't look like they were breaking a sweat... A very humbling experiance, but very cool to see them move...
I love your videos Mark. I was running mid 1:30s half marathons in my early 40s and I thought that was ok. Now in my late 50s and a quadruple heart bypass under the bridge I am at 26 mins for a park run and a 56 min 10k. I'd rather not talk about my half marathon time but it's just outside the world record time........for a full marathon 😂

Yeah, A proper track is awesome, I did my 1mile, 5k , 10km pbs on one. I had a friend doing a qualification run for the Olympics and I thought I'll stick with him as long as possible He still beat me by about a lap and a half. FWIW the mile was sub 5min just,5k 16:15 and 10k 34:24. Unfortunately that was about 30 years ago and while the mind still thinks it's 26ish the body not so much. It was good to see no matter how knacked you were you had the peace of mind to hit the stop on your watch, the first step of a true runner.

If you can find and indoor track with good banked turns it feels like you are flying through the laps so much fun.

My comment isn't specific to this video, but, having binged half your videos over the last month, it is clear that you absolutely would have got to the top at a sport, (perhaps rowing or cycling) had that been your goal. You can really see that when things start to get painful and tough, that's when your enjoyment kicks in (you may disagree but it's clear!) And that mindset is very rare I've found.

The first 400 you did was incredible, I'm a reasonably quick runner, and do 400 meters in 1:30-ish! Great job.
Incredibly interesting and informative video. I've loved athletics since I was a kid even though I'm no good at it myself. To see a real life athlete demonstrate just how fast the worlds best runners are moving is fascinating.
I just want to say thanks for the inspiration. I ran my very first 5k this weekend at the tender age of 48. 26:42.8. The goal was sub 30, crushed it. New goal, sub 25. I've got a 5 mile race scheduled in early May followed up by a 10k half way through the month. Thank you.

Fun video, the pace of track runners is mental, be careful to warm up loads. Normal warm up plus the drills you see the track people doing. I run lots however I have hurt myself on the track as you are way more up on your toes which hits your Achilles way more…👍

I love watching the 5k and 10k races as they wind up to the final sprint to the finish.
The recent Men's Commonwealth 5k was a beautiful example with the 3 medallists neck and neck down the home straight.
As your video shows we mere mortals are so slow in comparison.
Great vid. Your 400m time suffered from having a standing start. You'd do better with a flying start - maybe starting to run 50 metres before the line and crossing it already going at full tilt. Looking forward to the next video.

Great videos putting world class athletes into perspective! I sprinted sub 60 400m in my mid teens during relay races...but I would be absolutely spent / vomitting afterwards. Can't comprehend doing those for 12.5 laps

I did 23km in 2hrs 6mins today. I would need to run at double that speed to be in the ballpark for marathon winners. Incomprehensible.

The paces that any of these elite athletes can sustain is simply insane. Have you considered going for a 5K PB around the track now you have a bit of a feel for it?

Thanks for these vids putting running into perspective. I only started a few weeks ago with a hatred of running having never run further than up the stairs, I was surprised to manage 5k within a couple of weeks and then knock it down to 29 mins on my second attempt. I'm very much not fit or in any sort of shape so I'm hoping with a bit more time it will come down. I'd settle for 25 mins, that seems an eternity away from where I am now.

I used to be a county level 400m runner and professional rugby player... A long time ago, I was at Kingston Athletics track doing pre-season 400m speed endurance runs 5 x 400m with a two minute rest between each run... Moses Kiptanui (world champ 3,000m steeplechase runner) along with two of his mates were running around the grass on the outside of the track chatting at the same pace that I was running on the inside lane of the track... They were there when I arrived and still going when I left... I was blowing big time and they didn't look like they were breaking a sweat... A very humbling experiance, but very cool to see them move...
I love your videos Mark. I was running mid 1:30s half marathons in my early 40s and I thought that was ok. Now in my late 50s and a quadruple heart bypass under the bridge I am at 26 mins for a park run and a 56 min 10k. I'd rather not talk about my half marathon time but it's just outside the world record time........for a full marathon 😂
Running on the track is one of my favorite things to do. Nothing like it. Forces you to really consider what being strong means.

Yeah, A proper track is awesome, I did my 1mile, 5k , 10km pbs on one. I had a friend doing a qualification run for the Olympics and I thought I'll stick with him as long as possible He still beat me by about a lap and a half. FWIW the mile was sub 5min just,5k 16:15 and 10k 34:24. Unfortunately that was about 30 years ago and while the mind still thinks it's 26ish the body not so much. It was good to see no matter how knacked you were you had the peace of mind to hit the stop on your watch, the first step of a true runner.
