      Even if the Steam deck is not really dominating the PC market, this will increase the install base quite significantly. Probobly will push some deves over the edge.

      @@FreeAimDog It depends on the game. Lots of PC games seemingly inevitably come with a buggy HDR impl. However, unless your display is FALD or OLED, you have yet to see HDR in the first place. With a "real" HDR screen it is transformative. Unfortunately, heavy marketing in the monitor/tv space has led people to believe their LED/LCD panel is capable of HDR in the strictest sense.

    The argument of the Deck vs Ally vs Legion for me is simple. I want the Steam Deck to play games when I'm mobile / not home / not at my office / not around a computer.
    When I want power - I play on my gaming rig at home, or my gaming laptop at work. Any other time I'm more than happy to sacrifice performance for longevity of play.
    Now what I think would be really nice is if they did double the performance of the deck but gave you the option to run it under-clocked / de-tuned by 50%. So when plugged in it could be a beast, but when mobile it could still last a long time on battery. But I know what people would do - they would crank it to the max and complain about only getting 45 minutes of playtime.

    • @noer0205
      @noer0205 8 місяців тому +3

      That is what the ROG Ally has chosen to do and the battery in that is 40 Wh. Doubt Valve could fit 50 Wh in the Steam Deck if they had to include a larger cooler for the CPU. So battery life would be similar to the Ally.

      @@noer0205 the ally doesn’t perform as well as the deck at 15 watts in my testing. I had the Ally for a bit but returned it. It’s nice but I preferred the steam deck experience.

      @noer0205 8 місяців тому +5

      @@MikeDQB my point exactly. Valve cannot just throw in a chip with twice the performance and underclock it to lower power levels, like you suggest. That is almost exactly what the ROG is, and it proves that the detuned chip will not perform as efficiently at those reduced power levels. You cannot have both, man.
      Edit: "can" to "cannot"

    • @rwiley71483
      @rwiley71483 8 місяців тому

      Well the Legion Go, out the box unoptimized, just about does.
      So, that speaks to me because it’s not far behind at 15 watts in both performance and battery 🔋, so, it’s just a matter of additional tweaking to narrow that gap further so that yes, when on the move you can have reduced battery anxiety while offering in addition, the ability to go much further in performance as an OPTION by indeed tethering to a wall, being much less cumbersome than a laptop or definitely desktop!

      Yeah people are opposing innovation and it baffles me..
      I like the huge amount of additions Valve put time into in this revised version. They could have just upgraded the screen and called it a day. How unexciting would that have been compared to what we are getting. Keep up the good effort, Valve!
      Would suggest to those people complaining: Buy what you need/want when it satisfies those needs/wants. Then you don't have to worry about what comes next, because you aren't buying into future promises and expectations. Which is setting you up to being disappointed.

    Steam Deck vs ROG Ally isn't even a question for me. SteamOS is just far less janky. I don't expect my handheld experiences to be top of the line (and if I wanted that, I could just stream from my gaming PC to my Deck), but Windows is just a mess on handhelds right now. Hell even my gaming PC has a bug with the Nighttime mode in W10, where it will save the settings of nighttime mode, but the bar is always at 100%. I hate Windows and it's jankiness.

    • @fafski1199
      @fafski1199 8 місяців тому +3

      SteamOS is only great when playing games directly from your Steam library. However, when it comes to playing games from other sources (ie. Epic, GoG, Ubisoft), trying to run older games or any game that requires you going to desktop, then you'll soon find out that you frustratingly have to jump through a myriad of hoops in order to get those games even working. Far more so than with Windows, where it's a breeze in comparision. And I'm not even going to get into the amount of effort needed in order to get some Apps working on Steam OS (if you can at all).
      SteamOS is far away from being perfect and can be equally as "Janky", dependant on what you are doing

      Windows for all it's flaws is second to none, whenever it comes to software, hardware and driver support. As for gaming, again show me any OS that has anywhere close to the amount of support or the vast back library support that Windows has.
      If you are looking for game compatibility and for the shear amount of games that are supported by an OS, then you simply can't beat Windows, try as you might.

    I Love the Steam Deck overall but I switched to the Rog Ally because it just has better performance capabilities. Especially at 18-30 watt. Yes the user experience isnt as good outside of gaming.
    But playing Elden Rin on 50-60 FPS, or Hogwarts Legacy at 45-60 FPS, even Remnant 2 at 45-60FPS at better setting aswell makes such a difference to playing in the low 30s.
    The only thing thats completely ass about it is Asus firmware updates, I hate them and avoid them unless I read up on it and its a good upgrade, but even then I hate them. Other than that its not so hard to start it and press the game shortcut of the game I want to play and play for a few hours.
    Yes the initial setup is a bit of a pain and disabling memory core and stuff like that but its a one time thing and in the end you will play your games with much better performance.
    I guess it depends a lot on how you travel, I spend a lot of time on trains and they 99% of the time have a power outlet next to the seat so the battery thing isnt too much of an issue. I can see accepting the downgrade in performance of the Deck to be able to play for twice as long if you cant easily recharge it. But even then 2 hours or so game time if you travel will still have you needing to recharge at least once or twice so neither is perfectly portable really in that sense.

    Most of the time on either device id be limiting the display at 40 or 45 or running at the full 120 or 90 in less demanding games.
    At max fps frame drops wont matter too much and the ally does not support vrr below 48hz. So for the demanding games where id need vrr i wouldnt be able to reach the fps necessary to take advantage of it. For less demanding games id prefer 90fps on an oled over 120.

      All of the Z1 Extreme handhelds while at a higher wattage will put out anywhere from 25% to 50% more performance in most games. In several of the slew of demanding AAA titles that we've seen come along this year, that extra bump from the Z1 handhelds has made the difference between several games being still playable on them, while being barely even playable on the Steam Deck. Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3 and Alan Wake 2 are all recent prime examples, where the Steam Deck seriously struggles and will often put out lengthy dips down into the low 20's at times, while the Z1 Extreme handhelds can pretty much hold a constant 30fps+, while using the same settings. Unfortunately that's likely going to be the same story from now on, until the Steam Deck 2 sees daylight.
      Don't get me wrong the Steam Deck is great when it comes to most games. However, don't expect too much from it, especially when it comes to highly demanding AAA titles.

    I don’t want to sit all day and be stuck playing games in my room. Then Valve comes up with the Steam Deck and it’s got me out of the house and even when I’m not playing on it everyday, I don’t have to choose now between being at home and being able to play (even if I don’t) or going out and not being able to play if I get bored at some point in the day (watching UA-cam then instead). But I never liked the LCD display on my Steam Deck and now that is also resolved!
    Man, an OLED with 1000 nits of brightness, like Rich said it’s an LG OLED TV on the go. That reason alone puts the competition (even with better hardware) out of my sight. The only thing I wish is better performance of course. Well we will have to wait maybe 1.5 to 2 years for a Steam Deck 2, possibly with RDNA4 or maybe the new upcoming ARM SoC from NVIDIA. How great would that be, being able to play RTX „path traced“ games on the go without cloud game streaming. Of course not in 4K, who needs that resolution on a handheld. 720p/800p is perfectly fine for me, I guess Valve will push the display to 1600p and make use of perfect 1:1 pixel scaling from 800p, so making the best use of the hardware instead of throwing most of the power away on resolution.

I think they even have their display mounted above the fireplace and I can see from my top window they didn't enable HDMI Color Mode on the right port. Send help I am worried about my own sanity. My partner has started to mock my own voice about how this episode of house of dragon is playing back via dolby vision but what can I expect from someone who seemingly happily accepts my stale 3090's and is using my old £2000 VA peasant window with bleed and poor grey uniformity. Windows is a great experience on my rog ally and people forget you can buy add on battery packs I have one with a lead running out of my backpack into the ROG ally and can play starfield for around 3 hours which is plenty enough for me. Also I have a gaming PC but still mostly use the ROG ally at home since I bought it because it is that good. imo. I have 2 steamdecks I am gonna put on ebay and buy the steamdeck OLED or maybe Legion GO haven't decided. Probably the steamdeck OLED. I never had to put a keyboard and mouse on my ROG ally the touchscreen windows experience has been. fine. People are saying these things who don'rtt even own one by there own admission. lol

      Exactly, I love my Ally I have all 3 just got the Legion go last week cause I wanted a bigger screen but, the software is shit right now. I'll give until January when my return windows is about to close. I have a launch Steam Deck it got put to the side once I got the Ally the sound stage and, the vrr screen playing most games at above 60fps is night, and, day could not go back to my steam deck. Plus I hate using Linux for gaming haven't had one issue with windows gaming even on my 4090 gaming desk or 2080ti desktop windows gaming has been fine for me.

      @@mosthated8848 I have found the deck is a bit smoother with navigation and with UI. I love my Ally, but I use my deck more because of the battery life out and about or when I fly. Comparing a 4090 or 2080ti and saying you have not had issues is not fair. I have a 4090 and had a 2080ti. When you are buying the Rolls of GPUs you should never have an issue. I have had issues. Older games can be a pain in the neck on windows at times.

    I take my Steam Deck nearly everywhere. I use it in the living room, outdoors in broad daylight, in hotels and conference rooms, bars and clubs... all sorts of lighting conditions. The display is bright enough to see what I'm playing and that suffices. I simply do not have the opportunity to appreciate the visual fidelity of a tiny 7" OLED display in all of those conditions, AND NEITHER DO MOST EVERYONE. Saying the LCD display is "bad" is pure snobbery.

      Faster, yes, but "better" is subjective. They achieve that extra performance by brute forcing it with more wattage. Worst-case battery life on the Ally is only 40 minutes. On Deck OLED is about 2.5-3 hours. Not to mention at lower TDP the Deck actually outperforms it.

      Actually, with the latest bois, the Ally is impressive at 15 watts. I'm getting an extra 30 to 45 mins in most games. With more tweaking Asus might even get it dialed in even more in the future. Right now the Rog Ally is the clear winner once Lenovo gets its software outta beta that one will be the clear winner. I'm kind of confused. Why are people saying that the Steam Deck OLED is the far best PC handheld? I mean yeah, it's a great device and the interface is wonderful as well, but there are many other devices out there that are more powerful than the Steam Deck and feel better in the hands (in my opinion.) I own the Rog Ally, Steam Deck OLED and the Legion Go. So far, The Ally is my favorite. When it first came out, it wasn't the best and even though my micro SD slot died the other day, I still enjoy it more than the Steam Deck. Also, he said amazing acoustics. The Rog Ally again beats the Steam Deck in this as well. Again, I love my Steam Deck, but I've drifted back to my Ally over and over again the past couple weeks. The reason I'm not saying anything about the Legion Go, I don't like it and it's not my cup of tea.

      Cool. Nice device, but you also paid over a grand for it, and with a 28 watt TDP you'll get a worst case scenario battery life of about an hour and a half. The Steam Deck can double that. Plus Valve has good reason to support the device for years to come, while the Chinese company you bought that from has zero incentive to continue support beyond the initial sale.
      But I'm not crapping on the A1 Pro. It IS a nice device, and I sincerely hope it gives you a long time of enjoyment.

    I disagree to an extent because when people spend $700.00 on a handheld gaming product, they're not expecting a massive upgrade a year and a half later. Most could've waited. I definitely could've waited. Remember for many of us it took 3 months or more to receive our Steamdeck. I'm happy for the new consumers because they are getting a fantastic handheld console. I truly am. The Deck is really cool. I personally feel jaded and not happy with Valve's communication about the original Deck's lifespan. I know some will disagree with me but this is how I feel.

      Yep, the battery life is more of an issue on the Legion Go, however I wouldn't class it as being stellar on the Steam Deck either.
