What did you do with the driveline when you converted it to 1000 RPM the first time?

We didn't convert to 1000, we converted from 1000 back to 540. To adapt the driveline we used a 1000/540 adapting coupler.

Could you not just cut a little length off the driveshaft?

I think you would have to cut off too much. Of course you could cut in the middle and weld it but why.
