Miss these types of conversations about star wars. Feels like a different era because we SW fans barely ever talk about this stuff anymore due to how over it is.
I also think it hurts a bit because many of us know how good Star Wars can be. And how good the sequels could have been if they respected what came before.
3 things of Disney Star Wars I liked. Mandalorian S1 Rouge One Andor Clone wars S7 Some of Rebels Last episode of Kenobi Last 2 episodes of Ahsoka Some episodes of S2 Mandalorian (I enjoyed Bad Batch S1) I can’t say theirs not moments in the other shows I didn’t enjoy, but here’s the issue, it’s solely just moments. Like theirs some fun moments in between the shows and episodes but that doesn’t mean they’re good or well written shows from writers that really understand the lore. I’m still under the belief that Kathleen Kennedy and those under her lead this train and they dictate what ends up on the screen and the stories written.
People don't have these discussions because there is no more respect within the conversation, you can't like or dislike without getting the old "fake star wars fan" line
@@Lostcanonmedia it really helps when Disney are purposefully trying to create bad and unlikable content just so they can use it to attack the few fans that are left.
When I subbed to Critical Drinker, he had less than 5,000 subscribers -- and now he's been interviewed by friggin' Ben Shapiro. The internet is a crazy thing.
Agreed. However, CD is absolutely fearless, funny and non-woke. And God knows there was a giant void waiting for someone like him to step into that space. So his success is not totally surprising. Cream rises to the top. (By the same token, Ben and the Daily Wire filled a similar void.)
Yeah, Drinker has gained well over 1 million more subscribers since I first started watching his stuff, I think he had around 200, 000 at that time. I’ve enjoyed watching hid channels grow, he’s so spot on about almost everything.
In a society where endless hordes of evil people try to convince you of outright lies in order to gain power over you and manipulate you, speaking the truth becomes downright heroic. And people flock to it like crazy.

I agree with your guys view on Count Dooku on this one. Sir Christopher Lee once said "Everyone has to star in bad movies from time to time. The trick is to not be bad in them."
It's a shame Harrison Ford could take that advice. He's been an entitled primadonna who puts in as only as much effort as he feels the movie deserves even going back to Jedi. lmfao
Maul wasn't mute, he just didn't have many lines... which was a mistake, but there is a difference. A lot more should have been done with that character but, then again, a lot more should have been done with that movie. The Duel of the Fates didn't elevate the script of Phantom, and the script was the problem with that movie.
nah. The sequels were awful but John Williams still did a great job for 2/3 of them. Great scores don't significantly elevate either the prequels or the sequels.
thats something i disagree with. theyare smart, they know what they are doing, they know their ideas are losing them money, they know people are ditching them.............they dont care. they are activists first and foremost and pushing "THE MESSAGE" is more important than making money. i think they would rather see Disney burn than give up pushing "THE MESSAGE"
@@scorpionlord9175you truly believe that Disney is more interested in taking a political stance than making money? Is that why they keep putting gay characters in movies and then cutting them out for countries where gay people aren’t tolerated?
I was kind of hoping that at the end, Ben would ask to discuss some other issues and Drinker would respond with “ ..actually that’s all I’ve got time for today. Go away now”
It is so refreshing to finally hear someone else acknowledge that Count Dooku was actually a semi good character, sort of. I think Dooku was on the cusp of being a Jedi and a Sith, so he was actually the balance that could see the good and bad equally, which is why he realized what was happening in the Senate and tried to warn Obi Wan. Obi should have listened to him
@@Martian_Manhunter_01 Tales of Jedi was just a bastardisation of Dooku's characterisation in both Disney and pre-Disney novels. The director of that show made Dooku a cartoony villain in TCW, so that show deserves no credit.
It still baffles my mind why they didn't just copy & paste those three books into movie format. Zahn is arguably the reason SW still exists given that he ushered in the EU and everything that came after, possibly even gave Lucas the motivation to do the prequels. They have him doing stuff now but they could've gotten him in 2013 to help oversee that a HTTE trilogy stays true to the books. They had the easiest winning hand in cinema history, and decided to just rub shit on their faces instead.
@@benmiles00 she doesn't "despise" it. Disney have mined it for material constantly. Disney just didn't want to be slaves to the storylines. GL would have done the same thing even he didn't see the old EU as canon in relation to his plans for the ST and possibly beyond. He treated as a kind of different (novelised) universe
@@jt1559 The Phantom Menace is a great movie and arguably the best of the prequel trilogy. Jar Jar derangement syndrome has brainwashed an entire generation into thinking otherwise.
@dakotagilliland918 I personally still subscribe to the Darth Jar Jar theory. I can only imagine how different the franchise would be if the prequels had played out that way. I get slightly giddy thinking about how badly Disney would have ruined that alternate franchise, too 😂
I was an 11 yr old boy when Return Of The Jedi hit theatres in 1983… there was a line up for over 2 city blocks. Every kid I knew in my hood absolutely loved the Ewoks. Sometimes people forget that certain characters are there to help bridge the gap with the younger audiences. I’m willing to bet more kids from 10-15 in that time period in life loved and appreciated the ewoks. In 1983 you can also bet a massive chunk of the paying audience was us kids going with family (and we were repeat customers). I was so lucky to be alive and at that age of 11 in 1983. I’m 51 today and I still love and appreciate the ewoks and what they meant to me in my childhood.
Finally - I'm glad to hear it's not just me. I don't love the Ewoks or anything (I was born in 1985), but I never hated them or thought they were stupid. To me that was part of the magic of Star Wars, seamlessly blending the stuff for adults and for kids. They were kind of cheesy and immature and that was totally okay with me because they were well balanced by all the rest.
Also, the Ewoks are a stand-in for the lesser equipped and more simple army that defeated a much larger, and better equipped one (a-la Vietnam vs USA). And this isn't me talking out of my arse as George Lucas confirmed that the Ewoks represented that to a degree. It's not all about appealing to younger audiences and selling toys, though that was a part of it for sure.
Likewise I was 11 when ROTJ came out and absolutely loved it, never had an issue with the ewoks and still don't now, I think they compliment the film very well.
I have to say it was really awesome to see my favorite political commentator and my favorite movie commentator ranking one of my favorite movie series. I hope you two do some more videos together in the future. This was great.
Or the piece of the Emperor's Throne Room that plays as Vader looks back and forth between his master and his son while his son is on the brink of death... And then transitions into the Force Theme as Anakin is reborn and fulfills his destiny.
Yes. People get too hung up on the Ewoks, which I actually love, but even if you don’t like them, they are barely there. The beginning sequence of rescuing Han is one of the best adventure sequences in all of film, and the ending battles are epic.
If you were to remove the Gungan vs droids battle, I would argue the climax of Phantom is high up there too. The back and forth between Anakin in the pod and Obi Wan+Qui Gon vs Maul is great. The fact that both simultaniously ramp up the tension at the exact same moment is great. Of course the scenes being paired with arguably one of the top 3 pieces in Star Wars music helps it along. But man, the gungan battle does bring it down a bit unfortunately.
I think it gets underrated because of the Ewoks. Maybe a hot take, but Empire wouldn't be a beloved film if it weren't for the emotional payoffs that RotJ provides. Empire is amazing, but it's amazing in the context of having a sequel that pays off the heroes' failures.
@@crusherven I know I am in the minority but I love the Ewoks and that is why RotJ is my favorite Star Wars film. I was born the year RotJ was released and so I fell in love with them as a small child so I have no shame in my love for them.

How is the PHANTOM MENACE THAT LOW? It’s incredibly underrated, Liam Neeson as Qui gon jinn is up there as one of the most interesting and intricate Jedi that’s been written in the series, it was so cool to see a maverick Jedi that saw the flaws within the Jedi council.
The Phantom Menace has some epic moments, but it does have a lot of s@@t in it. I disagree with Drinker and Ben with putting Attack of the Clones above. PM is still very entertaining with all its flaws but AOTC gets ruined by that awful love story.
Dual of the fates puts it above AoTC by itself. My list would be: RoTS ESB New Hope Phantom Menace RoTJ AoTC Rogue One Those are the only SW movies. And theres one show (thats not a cartoon) Andor.
"So bad TLJ took a while to sink in" that's very true. It was so bad I was in denial during the movie. I thought Luke was playing a false version of himself similar to how Yoda played a goofy swamp creature before dropping the act. Then the act never dropped. Then the movie was 90% over. What is this?
Same Drinker, same. I left TLJ movie thinking "Ok, that was ok.. " and woke up the next morning ticked off and hated the movie. It took time for it to sink in.
The moment rey beat kylo ren without any training and fin held his own with kylo without force powers just because they were "minorities" is when I was done with star wars after spending 10s of thousands collecting star wars memorabilia. Revenge of the sith 4. return of the jedi 5. attack of the clones 6. the phantom menace 7. the force awakens 8. the last jedi 9. the rise of skywalker

TCD and Ben?! A perfect combo to unpack the Star Wars franchise in a nutshell. And they did it well. I hope we see more "supergroups" like this join up for discussions.
Solo over Phantom Menace sounds so wrong. At least it had an amazing cast, better cast of characters, battle of Naboo, Duel of the Fates etc. Sure the writing isn’t the best but I can’t even name you the antagonists of Solo…
The Ewok thing wasn’t too bad…maybe because I saw it as a kid but they didn’t overdo it. It wasn’t like Jar Jar or anything…in your face the whole movie🙄
@@DC-gh6dyI loved the whole phantom menace. I was pretty young when I watched it. I also found I didn’t need a very serious Star Wars movie. Its lasers in space for goodness sake
I think the reason why is because I saw the Ewoks as frail and weak. Yes they overturned the battle for the rebels, but we saw them dying easily against the Empire. Seeing the poor Ewok crying over its dead companion always hurts to watch 😢 The advantage they had was they utilized the forest with traps and ambushes. Not only that they hijacked the AT-ST and turned the tide with Chewie.
they make the empire soldiers look like a complete joke, and the final battle has no tension because of it, "teddy-bears beats the enemy forces of the movie" thats what happens, they represent how childish is the movie compared to Empire, complete downgrade for selling toys and missed opportunity to make a actual mature sequel of Empire.
The Ewoks themselves aren't an issue, it was the execution and the subsequent fan reaction that was. People took the battle of Endor to be indicative of the Empire being so wildly incompetent that they couldn't even win a battle where they had the advantage. However Lucas meant it to be indicative of Imperial political leadership (in this case Palpatine)screwing over military commanders (Admiral Piett and the like) who could have won the space battle easily had it not been for his orders. The whole thing is one big Vietnam analogy, but not from a Communist perspective, Lucas never intended for Imperial troops to be incompetent or bloodthirsty, but he had to balance that with showing the Vietnamese stand ins (the Rebels) as heroic and competent because he considered the US' actions in Vietnam to be wholly unjustified (and indeed they were, Ho Chi Minh actually was a pro-democracy, pro-US leader, but Truman refused to help Minh despite Minh's forces giving intel to the US in WW2 and the French colonial government in Vietnam working with the Axis.
Sorry, but that was an awful sequence. My theatre actually laughed when he cried out "Nooooo" and any emotion in the scene was lost at that point. It's laughably bad and should have been such an amazing scene. The fact Lucas used that "Nooooooo" in ROTJ years later just compounded it. I love Lucas but sometimes he doesn't quite understand why certain things he originally created work so well. The fact Vader is silent when he looks back and forth between the emperor and Luke is just perfect! It tells you what you need to know without ANY sound.
@@thealexeitube Yea depicting him like Frankenstein's monster was not a good choice. Frankenstein's monster was a creation of parts while Anakin was obviously a real person, badly injured, and given parts to stay alive. It just didn't fit and the Noooooooooooooo was so corny. Showing his arc to becoming Vader was fine but I wanted to see OP Vader too. Like that short clip at the end of Rogue one. That short clip and a few scenes from that terrible Kenobi series are all we have of Vader flexing his power in live action. I would've loved to have seen a young Vader series where his true power is shown off. But I'm glad we haven't gotten it because Disney would surely find a way to screw it all up.
It’s great that they got together. I think it could’ve been better if critical drinker had led the conversation. He could’ve done his Tanya and drinking jokes if he wanted, but even without those jokes, I think it would’ve been a more balanced conversation. My eyes! Isn't the internet a beautiful thing that these two titans of their respective fields can learn of each other and get together to discuss a topic. Incredible! ❤
The weakness of the prequels wasn't George Lucas, it's that Lucas was deified by everyone there. When you watch behind the scenes clips and interviews from the Original Trilogy they talk about disagreeing with George and figuring out better versions of lines or better ways to do a scene, they are willing to have that conversation. When you watch the behind the scenes clips and interviews from the prequels everyone treats him like God. He can do no wrong and every idea he has is genius, they aren't willing to challenge him on anything. The best movies don't come from one creative person getting everything they want. They come from several creative people all giving each other feedback so the best possible work is done.
I'm in the minority but I felt the prequel trilogy was my favorite. I always preferred the innocent, young boy becoming the tyrant to "save" those he cares about but ends up losing them in the process. It's why I like Michael Corleone in The Godfather series for the same reason. You have to admit the action/fight scenes are WAY better in the prequels, along with the special effects.
But did you actually watch the prequel behind the scenes? There is absolutely collaboration. So many talented artists did incorporate their own ideas to mesh with what George was seeking. And when George suggested new ideas they were often to add cohesion within the rest of the story. The “yes man” myth of the prequels is so frustratingly misguided, I mean have you seen Rick McCallum? When you actually dig into these films there’s so much more to it than people give credit for.
@4:23 I remember the intro crawl on episode 3 said there was heros on both sides. That always made me look at the separatist differently than being just bad guys. And I always find it funny that they put Phantom menace so low. Yes I hate what they did with Jar jar and Anikin but I overlooked that but the coolest Jedi of the whole series Quigon jin was here with Obiwan. I thought that was the coolest combo and I wish that same appentice and student happend with Luke and Rey.
The Phantom Menace still has the best lightsaber duel of all time with the Obi/Qui-Gon- Maul duel. Yes Jar Jar was annoying, but the Pod race was awesome. Re-watch it again, it had the best choregraph of any duel ever.
i agree.. whenever i watch Phantom Menace, or recall it, the pod race and the duel is what comes to mind immediately.. sadly Darth Maul never got the elaborate back story or a spin off that fans want.
The Phantom Menace was, to me, the most raw potential of any of the Star Wars films. I honestly believe had George Lucas had a secondary writer who was very talented, someone he could hand his scripts to and let the guy take a couple months to punch it up, improve the dialogue, and fix the Lucasisms, I honestly believe Phantom Menace could have been as good as Empire Strikes Back. But, it wasn’t. For me, Phantom Menace ranks sixth overall.

Lore, to me, is more tied to the beginnings of something. Maybe how the Force was discovered on Tython, or utilized by certain races even before that. I mean, perhaps the Rakata or the Kwa. Or something even more ancient, the wookiee species is supposedly 2 Million years old. Maybe even the origins of the Force. That would seem more like "deep lore".
Refreshing to see The Drinker again. This guy is amazing and because of him I became aware of *The Message* that has been infesting entertainment for a while. Ben and DW, you should consider collaborating more with him.
I have to rank phantom menace a bit higher simply because the lightsaber battle between Qui Gon, Obi-Wan, and Darth Maul in the Duel of fates was quite good. It was the first time we really ever saw some real fast paced sword fighting action. Between that and the cameo from Willow :) two moments that moved the entire film up a bit in rank.
@@ANDY1985UK2011 I wouldn't say they are BETTER per say, the saber battle in 1 with Duel of Fates between Obi Wan and Qui Gon and Darth Maul is definitely one of the best moments in the entire series and might be the best pure light saber battle overall. 2 was kinda meh for lightsaber battles, had good battle scenes but not for pure lightsaber, in 3 they got a little dramatic, a little choreographed with all the spinning moves, and when Grevious is doing the blender thing and then Obi Wan defeats that move by a simple thrust was a little silly and that battle was anti climactic, but the high ground scene is a pretty good light saber battle and probably the highest point in the story arc for the entire series as well. Besides that I'd say in 5 the battle between Luke and Vader is another one of the best, but in general I think the prequel had more and better light saber fight scenes.
@@MannElitei disagree they aren’t great films in my view. while i do appreciate them for what they are and actually being faithful to the source material after the disney joke of a trilogy, let’s not sit here and pretend they were “good”.
6:35 I love those Timothy Zahn novels! What a great choice for a continuation of Star Wars, I hope Ben also reads the Jedi Academy series to them. Im still so upset that Disney didnt use those books as inspiration for the sequels instead of allowing the canon to spiral out of control.
For real. They had a license to print money. Okay, I can appreciate not wanting all of the baggage of the Exoanded Unicerse and wanting to try new things, but they easily could have just retold a bunch of these stories with relatively minor alterations, and they would have had years of success without having to put that much effort. Now they're trying to double back and give it to us, but I just don't see KK and her underlings allowing Luke Skywalker in particular to be a prominent character. What a shame. On a related note, he should consider reading the old Expanded Universe Jedi Apprentice amd Bounty Hunter YA books to his kids. I didn't get to read many EU books growing up because I wasn't exactly rich and didn't know how to find a lot of them at the time, but I did read a good chunk of those when they released around the time of the prequels when I was a kid, and I remember quite enjoying them.
Have you been saving this in your back pocket for weeks, Ben! As a Scottish person and Critical Drinker fan (and yours of course), what a lovely, wee treat.
Return of the Jedi is number 1 for me. I wore out my dad's VHS tape. Empire strikes back is a close 2nd, but I enjoy Return of the Jedi the most to this day. Vadar's redemption gets me every time.
Agreed completely. Do some of the Old Republic novels and stories with Darth Revan and Bane. Do the Timonthy Zane novels The other big thing you left out that destroyed the Last Jedi was the hyperspace jump destroying the ship. If you can do that, then have some robots hyperspace jump ships into the Death Star instead of having a massive battle.
Yeah. It looked amazing in theater, but then you stop and think about the logic of it and realize it makes nonsense of every space battle in the series. It might make for an interesting setting, since it means you'd never build anything big enough to be a target, but it's not Star Wars.
Showing Darth Revan at 15:22 was a big plus. The old republic era is a platinum mine of good star wars lore. They could start an entire saga's worth of series in that era using whats already been established.
Yeah the original KOTOR was the sh*t. The twist about Revan's identity was pretty crazy at the time, although admittedly wouldn't work well as a movie and especially not 20+ years after the reveal.
They are too arrogant for that. They are in it to make their own original stories. And for them to make sense they keep reinventing the franchise. That's why it doesn't feel like Star Wars anymore, their work will never make sense to someone who grew up with George's vision. I mean, all of a sudden Force Healing is a thing? It makes sense in the games, not in the movies. And definitely not to the point of saving someone from death. Just this small detail turns the whole IP around, why didn't Obi-Wan Force Heal Padmé at the operating table, for example? Or Anakin could have saved his mom if he was backed by Disney writers. It becomes a joke really fast.
So AWESOME to see those 2 gentlemen coming together and exchanging views. Both very intelligent and both very good at presenting their thoughts. Awesome! Big cheers to/for that! Ps: Although I wish Ben would slow down a notch speaking... More rapid than machingun fire ;-)
One of the worst things for me about Han's death is TFA was seeing Chewie's reaction to watching his oldest friend die. It was so heart-wrenching to watch.
What annoyed me was Leia giving a hug to comfort Rey, who'd known Han for almost no time, and ignoring Chewie. And people still claim she wasn't a Mary Sue.
That was one of my favorite moments from Episode 7. As soon as I saw Harrison Ford on the cast, I knew Han was going to die. Ford was already over playing Han in Return of the Jedi and he never seemed too pleased to talk about that role since. Anyone who paid attention to that could come to the conclusion that Hans death was prerequisite for Ford coming back I think he even said at some point that the only way he ever would play Han again would be to kill him, but don't hold me to that since I could be misremembering. So given that the choice was between Han dying or Han not showing up at all, I appreciated that they gave his death some weight with Chewies reaction.
@@georgebailey8179 How It Should Have Ended flamed them for that moment. They had a grief striken Chewie run out to embrace Leia. She then basically throws him off her "Get the f**k outta here" and runs up to console Rey.
Love this! Note for Ben: these videos really do a lot to help show you are a down to earth guy who likes and enjoys what many of your viewers like and enjoy. Great collaboration here!
My Top 3 would have to be: Revenge of the Sith Phantom Menace Return of the Jedi (New Hope is close behind Return of the Jedi) Phantom Menace has some of the best atmosphere in the series. You get this sense that there’s something mysterious going on, looming in the background. You really do sense something “elusive”, as Obi Wan said. In the beginning, I feel like I get sucked in the movie. On top of that, the final battles, including the Duel of Destiny, are most explosive! Like what’s said in this video, Return of the Jedi has huge emotional payoffs. And of course, probably the best space-battle in the series. (We wouldn’t get a grand space battle like RotJ until Rogue One.)
You can tell Ben was grateful to talk about anything besides politics and current events. It does highlight the importance of escapism. Sure its important to be aware of the state of the world, but its also nice to unwind and shoot the shit about fun stuff, else you'll go insane.
Luke, tossing the light saber over his back was unforgivable. The millennium falcon just sitting in the desert with the "keys" in it well what can I say? I guess I can blame George for selling the franchise.
The guy's 80 he wasn't going to make anymore movies he just wanted to retire. If he didn't sell it his kids would have owned it. Plus at the time Disney seemed like a responsible choice.
I agree. But, there were two fatal flaws. 1. Jar-Jar. Every other Gungan is a brave and competent warrior. Could you imagine if Lucas had treated Chewbacca the same way as a character? 2. Anakin is too young. As much as I like Qui-gon, it really should have been Obi-wan as the master and Anakin as his apprentice going to save Padme. That would also have made the love story make more sense. The only other thing I would change is the battle droids' voices and lines. They could have had a far more menacing presence, and in turn, that would have made the Jedi ripping through them like toys even more impressive. Other than that, it's pretty great. Darth Maul's reveal is one of the best reveals in film history. The pod race was pretty exciting. Every instant with the Jedi on screen is great. The Jedi council was good (Yoda AND Sam Jackson!). Cool new vehicles a ships. A double-bladed lightsaber. And the music was some of Williams' best.
RedLetterMedia does a really good job of deconstructing it and showing how bad it is compared to the originals. If it had been the first Star Wars movie, the franchise never would have been born because no one would care to make a sequel... honestly I think it only made money because of the Star Wars name and anticipation.
@@tomgerlach4489 Qui-Gon is there to show you what a jedi should be, to contrast how the rest of the order has become so caught up in there strict code, they've become deaf to the will of the force. Drinker, I'm a little higher on Solo than you are...I didn't hate it! I thought they did a really admirable job of finding a charismatic actor to play young Han
I don't think it's underrated exactly, I think most people would agree rogue one is by far the best SW movie that came out of Disney. Like if Disney just stopped there, and did not do what they did people would have praised Disney. The sad thing about it, was that Rogue One set up a lie about Disney. It gave us the impression that it's was good that Disney bought the IP, that Disney would treat it well like they did Marvel at the time. It raised our hope and expectations only to have it crash.
You could easily de-canonize the sequel trilogy. Hell, they didn’t even brand the films as Episodes 7/8/9. Easy. You could still use old Luke, and POSSIBLY Lando. Ford wouldn’t do it, and Carrie has passed, but if you really had to, for a flashback or two, you could digitally do it like they did in Boba Fett. What a shit series… anyways. You could brand it as Episode VII and do all new mains, hopefully with a good story, and have Luke show up in an Obi Wan-esque role. It could, and should be done, if Disney ever wants to climb out of this hole.
My response to who's Finn- A character that was actually given a good character arc, then KK realized he has dangly bits and thus needed to be "dealt with" properly.
Yes, Poe, too. It was very over-the -top in ep. 8. Poe is the only one actively trying to save everyone, so admiral gender-studies has to put him in his place, too. But yeah, when Finn decides to sacrifice himself for the good of the cause, his moral agency and noble sacrifice have to be stopped.
The ending with the DW sign with the Death Star exploding in the background is one of the coolest things I've ever seen. #2 Drinker where are your glasses?!

11:19 I remember actually liking The Force Awakens at the time. So, I was excited to see The Last Jedi and The Drinker nailed my reaction to it perfectly. I wanted to like it and figured there was a lot to unpack about it. Luke's story, as maligned as it is, is still the best part of the movie for me just on Hamill alone. I think it was the establishment's reaction to any valid TLJ criticism that turned me off from the brand. OR woke me up to the toxicity.
Same. I really enjoyed it, even watched it twice. I thought it was very derivative, but it was fun, and it looked like it was going somewhere interesting.
This truly awesome twosome is the only, the ONLY, crossover/multiverse pairing that is not a sign of imaginative penury. Two of the men (and how rare real men are nowadays in the media world) that enrich my life, sharing a screen. Love it.
I'm the very odd person, who has been a SW fan since the early 80's(I'm 47) whose favorite SW movie is Rogue One. I just think it's the best film of the entire series. It has everything and is IMHO the ballsiest of all the SW movies. It's an extremely good war movie set in the SW universe. You could change the settings and the costumes but leave the story the same and make a really cool war movie set in WW1, WW2 or almost any other real conflict. It's very well done. It also has arguably the 3 best acting performances in the history of the series. Riz Ahmed's performance as Bohdi is probably the best acting performance I've seen in a SW movie. Felicity Jones and Diego Luna are hot on his heels. I adore that movie. My son thinks my opinion is garbage, I'm sure many other SW fans agree with him. 😂😂😂
I’m not sure I can say it is the very best but it’s up there for me. I love Rogue one a lot. It was an incredibly well done movie. But you have to remember it hangs off the success of the OG trilogy so it kind of has to come behind.
So, in the first half of the movie, she's just along for the ride and doesn't seem to make any decisions of consequence, When Andor chooses not to kill her father and then the Rebels kill him anyway, that takes away his moral agency. However, once she decides to do what needs to be done when the Rebels have given up, then every decision they make has an impact on the outcome. If the first half had been like the second half, I would agree, but the first half was a disappointment. I wonder how much of that sense of it being 2 separate movies was the result of the change of director during the production.
The settings, the pacing, the characters. All fantastic movie making. It never lags or drags and gives you enough insight into the characters to understand their motivation. It’s a movie that was throughly bookended. We knew where it started and knew where it had to end up and it still was riveting. A war movie set right in the middle of Star Wars. No space wizards or laser swords involved in the main plot. Just normal people standing up to an empire.
Honestly shocked they both didn’t have ROTS in top three but I understand why, and AOTC I agree had many many MANY issues but that final scene where Dooku fights both Anakin and Kenobi and then Yoda (who from what we see from the originals all the way to that point is frail and old) starts jumping all around acrobatically and with speed and Dooku being such a great duelist, man that scene for me holds AOTC up from the ashes and so does Maul in TPM
My Star Wars claim to fame… David Prowse (Darth Vader) had dinner at my folks house in Nottinghamshire back in 1997 and of course I joined them. The bloke was polite, honest and even retold us his side of the story, regarding the riff between him and George Lucas.
The Phantom Menace should be up as number 5, or even 4, for me. The most epic Jedi lightsaber battle between Qui-Gon Jinn & Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Maul and his double-bladed lightsaber, while the Duel of the Fates theme by John Williams is playing in the background, is simply iconic in my view.
I would put TPM higher because of the pod race, which is still unique in all of the SW movies and a lot of fun, and the Darth Maul fight, which is one of the best lightsaber duels ever
Imo 1. Revenge of the sith 2. Empire strikes back 3. Return of the jedi 4. Phantom menace 5. A new hope 6. Attack of the clones 7. Rogue one 9. The force awakens 8. . Solo 10. Rise of Skywalker 11. Last jedi Thats my opinion pls don't get triggered
11:01 This is exactly how I felt coming out of Last Jedi. I tried to convince myself that I liked it but my brain just would not reconcile what I'd just seen with what had come before. And then as the discourse began to play out, I came to understand why. That's when I knew I had fallen out of love with something that had meant so much to me for more than twenty years. Andor is really frustrating because it's legitimately good, and now we know that they actually are capable of crafting something original that does nothing but add to the Star Wars mythos. But it feels like such a fluke, a happy accident. I guess we'll find out when season 2 drops next year.
Not the crossover we expected, but the crossover we needed

Miss these types of conversations about star wars. Feels like a different era because we SW fans barely ever talk about this stuff anymore due to how over it is.
couldn't agree any more. we need a real director and a good writer to make them again
I also think it hurts a bit because many of us know how good Star Wars can be. And how good the sequels could have been if they respected what came before.
3 things of Disney Star Wars I liked.
Mandalorian S1
Rouge One
Andor
Clone wars S7
Some of Rebels
Last episode of Kenobi
Last 2 episodes of Ahsoka
Some episodes of S2 Mandalorian
(I enjoyed Bad Batch S1)
I can’t say theirs not moments in the other shows I didn’t enjoy, but here’s the issue, it’s solely just moments.

Agreed. However, CD is absolutely fearless, funny and non-woke. And God knows there was a giant void waiting for someone like him to step into that space. So his success is not totally surprising. Cream rises to the top. (By the same token, Ben and the Daily Wire filled a similar void.)

Yup, no career is pristine. Plus it's sometimes hard to know whether a movie will be a good one or not before you sign on. Sometimes.
The duel of the fates alone puts Phantom above anything Disney put out.
Ehhh.., Maul was a mute and just walking lightsaber. Sequels are bad, but epic music with no tension isn't the best example to pull from.
@@goldfishprime Being mute was part of his appeal. He was the silent assassin archetype and pulled it off well.
Maul wasn't mute, he just didn't have many lines... which was a mistake, but there is a difference. Obi should have listened to him
He is a great example of someone having good intentions but terrible execution. With a little flavor of desperation.
The Dooku episodes from Tales of the Jedi are some of the best, if not the best depending on who you ask, Star Wars content we've gotten under Disney.
@@Martian_Manhunter_01agreed! When he learns of Qui Gon’s murder… goosebumps. Then Yaddle tries to comfort him only to later be murdered.
@@Martian_Manhunter_01 Tales of Jedi was just a bastardisation of Dooku's characterisation in both Disney and pre-Disney novels. The director of that show made Dooku a cartoony villain in TCW, so that show deserves no credit.
I agree up until the point he killed yaddle. After that he was truly on the dark side!
Glad the Timothy Zahn stuff was mentioned. The Thrawn books would have made one of the best trilogies of all-time. I love his Star Wars books.

So awesome to see The Drinker have success. Well deserved mate! 😊
So nice to hear Ben have a conversation with virtually no politics involved. Great chat!
It's not all about appealing to younger audiences and selling toys, though that was a part of it for sure.
yeah take any OT lover with a grain of salt sometimes because they can often misunderstand Lucas' vision the most.
Likewise I was 11 when ROTJ came out and absolutely loved it, never had an issue with the ewoks and still don't now, I think they compliment the film very well.
Same. I didn't mind the Ewoks. I was a fan of Luke though, I hated him in the first two movies.

Return of the Jedi's climax is unbeatable. Come on. The score that plays when Luke starts to get the upper hand over darth vader gives me chills.
Yes. This is the best movie for me. The climax, the end of Luke's growth and satisfying conclusion. It skims the cream of the entire saga.
The slow, sad piano play of the imperial march when Vader dies or when he says "It is too late for me, son" always get me
Or the piece of the Emperor's Throne Room that plays as Vader looks back and forth between his master and his son while his son is on the brink of death...
You know you've finally made a name for yourself when you do a video with the Critical Drinker. Congrats, Ben!

Just for the scenes of Luke on the bridge with Vader and Palpatine, ROTJ has always been my favorite. "I am a Jedi, like my father before me."
I think it gets underrated because of the Ewoks. Maybe a hot take, but Empire wouldn't be a beloved film if it weren't for the emotional payoffs that RotJ provides. Empire is amazing, but it's amazing in the context of having a sequel that pays off the heroes' failures.

Seeing the poor Ewok crying over its dead companion always hurts to watch 😢
The advantage they had was they utilized the forest with traps and ambushes.
When Darth Vader rose from the table in "Revenge of the Sith", people in the theatre stood and cheered. What a great sequence.
Lol, when he screamed noooooo like Frankenstein my Cinema burst out laughing
Except for the noooooooooo!
Yeah until he screamed “noooooo” and everyone burst out laughing 😂 🤦♂️
@@thealexeitube Yea depicting him like Frankenstein's monster was not a good choice. Showing his arc to becoming Vader was fine but I wanted to see OP Vader too. Like that short clip at the end of Rogue one. I wasn't aware of this dynamic, but it makes total sense in retrospect.
Yep even Mark Hamill along with the other actors fixed some lines Lucas clearly had good ideas but isn’t a great scriptwriter

For me, Phantom Menace ranks sixth overall.
and the podrace - the podrace is wonderful
Yes 🙌 Phantom Menace is criminally underrated, and that fight scene is hands down the best of them all.
@@sagirparkar4115 He did. Just not in the movies. He was in several clone wars shows. His final showdown with old Ben made you realize how damaged he was. That his hate for Obi Wan and Palpatine was the only reason he kept living. There's a two part youtube documentry series of the complete life of Darth Maul. He's possibly the most tragic character in star wars. Reckecked. The 2 part doc is made by Metanerdz Lore.

Phenomenally done and hope to see more some time with you and the Critical Drinker!
It’s time we had a film written by The Critical Drinker and produced by Daily Wire.
This is the way
That would absolutely blow, these people know very little about the art of filmmaking.
@@mrlelle111 Who exactly are "these people"? You sound like someone who knows nothing about filmmaking accusing others of knowing nothing about filmmaking.
@@Cyclonus12 "these people" is reffering to Shapiro and The Drinker. In my opinion, they don´t seem interested in making inspired art, they care more for rightwing virtue signaling. They clamor for films that are excatly what they dislike, politically colored pictures.
@@mrlelle111 There was nothing in this video about making any of these mythical "politically colored pictures" you imagine. All they essentially said was that if they hypothetically got control of the Star Wars franchise, they would erase the sequel trilogy from canon, and replace it with something based on Timothy Zahn's Thrawn trilogy. Which is something that a whole lot of people would in fact appreciate, irrespective of their political views. Such as myself, who disagrees with a lot of Shapiro's political views, and doesn't even know Drinker's political views, despite having watched many of his videos. Maybe you are unfamiliar with those Zahn books... if so, that's perfectly fine. But it's pretty stupid to assume adapting them would somehow lead to "politically colored pictures". It sounds like you're simply butthurt that they might make something that doesn't cater to your specific politics.
Holy shit, Ben is a bigger Star Wars nerd than i realized. The moment he mentioned Thrawn, Mara Jade and her marrying Luke, that actually made me go "Oh fuck, he's deep lore!"
because he knows a few surface level details? whoopdedoo
@@iangiovanni6555 He just said he reads the books to his own kids, it's more than surface level. And even if it is, Ben is clearly showing a willingness to read more on the old legends continuity.
It’s not really deep lore, it’s the most well known stuff from old canon
Lore, to me, is more tied to the beginnings of something. Maybe how the Force was discovered on Tython, or utilized by certain races even before that. I mean, perhaps the Rakata or the Kwa. Or something even more ancient, the wookiee species is supposedly 2 Million years old. Maybe even the origins of the Force. That would seem more like "deep lore".
Refreshing to see The Drinker again. This guy is amazing and because of him I became aware of *The Message* that has been infesting entertainment for a while. Ben and DW, you should consider collaborating more with him.
Make this duo happen more often!! Y’all had great conversational chemistry.
You know you’ve made it as a commentator when Ben invites you on his show lol. I love TCD’s videos and I’m glad he’s doing so well!
But…
Jar Jar
I mean…..
Jar Jar is in that movie
prequels are underrated in general
@MannElite they are but would you not say the saber battles are better in attack of the clones and obviously revenge of the sith
The moment KK converted all the extended material to legends was the first red flag I personally thought things won't be ending up well down the road.
Have you been saving this in your back pocket for weeks, Ben!
As a Scottish person and Critical Drinker fan (and yours of course), what a lovely, wee treat.
I can’t believe what I am seeing. What an honor it must be to sharing screen with the great Critical Thinker. This channel is going places.
That is a decent and amusing collaboration conversation, plus a reminder of the late, great Christopher Lee, not many of his calibre are left.

Return of the Jedi is number 1 for me. I wore out my dad's VHS tape.
Empire strikes back is a close 2nd, but I enjoy Return of the Jedi the most to this day. Vadar's redemption gets me every time.
Me too, especially the end scene, where Anakin returns to see Luke,as a force ghost 😀😀😀😀😭😀
Agreed completely. Do some of the Old Republic novels and stories with Darth Revan and Bane. Do the Timonthy Zane novels
The other big thing you left out that destroyed the Last Jedi was the hyperspace jump destroying the ship.
This was so cool. Seeing BS chat with the CD/WJ and not really talk about politics at all. Glad CD get some recognition.
The Critical Drinker is one of this generations best movie critics! Awesome for having him on Ben!
Showing Darth Revan at 15:22 was a big plus. The old republic era is a platinum mine of good star wars lore. They could start an entire saga's worth of series in that era using whats already been established.
Shhh don’t give Disney any ideas - the IP must be first in the hands of real humans who care, not woke NPC ideologues
Yeah the original KOTOR was the sh*t. The twist about Revan's identity was pretty crazy at the time, although admittedly wouldn't work well as a movie and especially not 20+ years after the reveal.
I’d line up for a week to see a Revan Trilogy.

Excellent video. The drinker really understands story writing and makes for a great critic.
One of the worst things for me about Han's death is TFA was seeing Chewie's reaction to watching his oldest friend die. It was so heart-wrenching to watch.
And then made worse by Leia completely ignoring him to go hug some bitch that just showed up
What annoyed me was Leia giving a hug to comfort Rey, who'd known Han for almost no time, and ignoring Chewie. And people still claim she wasn't a Mary Sue.
Especially considering it's Chewbacca who dies canonically, not Han...and his death is pretty epic.
Almost like it was a calculated move to seem human
My Top 3 would have to be:
Revenge of the Sith
Phantom Menace
Return of the Jedi
(New Hope is close behind Return of the Jedi)
Phantom Menace has some of the best atmosphere in the series.
Great to hear the best voices in the movie industry collaborating with the best in political commentary!! What a great collaboration!
You can tell Ben was grateful to talk about anything besides politics and current events. It does highlight the importance of escapism. Sure its important to be aware of the state of the world, but its also nice to unwind and shoot the shit about fun stuff, else you'll go insane.
I love these collaborations with the drinker. Keep doing more of these
Love seeing these crossovers! Drinker is a fab guy who is open to talking to everyone and this was great fun.
We need to keep this collaboration going.
Phantom Menace has been so underrated, it is much better than people give it credit for
The story is great. Jar-Jar and the dialogue are what really hold it back, which wouldn’t be that big a deal, but they’re both just so damn prevalent.
I mean, it's a bad movie, but I enjoy it a lot. It was the first Star Wars movie I saw in the theater and it has a lot of fun shit.
@@tomgerlach4489 Qui-Gon is there to show you what a jedi should be, to contrast how the rest of the order has become so caught up in there strict code, they've become deaf to the will of the force. Anakin falls in part because of his death. Obi-wan wasn't ready to train Anakin. His character is essential.
Drinker, I'm a little higher on Solo than you are...I didn't hate it! I thought they did a really admirable job of finding a charismatic actor to play young Han
Both of you paired up for content is amazing! Please keep it coming.
I’m glad Ben likes Rogue One. Very underrated
Right? It is the best Disney SW movie.
@@robertparker6280….only good Disney Star Wars film..
@@noticedruid4985agree 🎯
Yeah it's definitely the best Disney one, I would put it in 4th or 5th place
Worse, he’s of…color so he needs to be brought down for the Chinese market
The ending with the DW sign with the Death Star exploding in the background is one of the coolest things I've ever seen.
#2 Drinker where are your glasses?!
I really really love these conversations. It gives us a bit of a breather from all the super controversial things we constantly meditate on. Drinker is very based
Why critical drinker whyyyyyyyyyyyy not Ben Shapiro. Ugh I love you so much. Why did u do this to meeeeeeeeeeeeee 😢😢
Yeah, I thought it was okay
Not very original though, basically just a rehash of episode IV
I'd put Solo lower though, I thought that was terrible
Love it.
What a fantastic collaboration idea. Glad to see you two joining in on something like this!
I love this, two guys with potentially different political views able to discuss Star Wars. Good movies without pandering can bring people together ❤
But you have to remember it hangs off the success of the OG trilogy so it kind of has to come behind.
rogue one is non-canonical so , what's your favorite actual star wars ?
@@iangiovanni6555 Rogue One. 😉
My Star Wars claim to fame…
David Prowse (Darth Vader) had dinner at my folks house in Nottinghamshire back in 1997 and of course I joined them.
The bloke was polite, honest and even retold us his side of the story, regarding the riff between him and George Lucas.
Yoda's sale pitch is that you can nearly complete your Jedi training in the time it takes to replace a hyperdrive.
The prequels were bonafide masterpieces compared to the Disney nonsense. Qui Gon alone makes the point.
Agreed 🎯
Really cool to learn Ben's read the Thrawn Trilogy! I'd love to hear him talk about his favorite pieces of Expanded Universe.
This was so awesome to see these 2 come together and talk star wars. Thank you
Rian has actually gone on record saying he hates star wars long before he ever became involved with it.
Even when the film was new that part was loved by everyone. Much of the rest of the film, though, is mediocre.
I agree. This movie has been maligned. It has it's dumb moments, but there is a ton of great stuff in it
I would put TPM higher because of the pod race, which is still unique in all of the SW movies and a lot of fun, and the Darth Maul fight, which is one of the best lightsaber duels ever
Yes!! Plus Ewan McGregor and Liam Neeson are amazing
Duel of the Fates is an incredible piece of music. Agree

8. . Solo
10. Rise of Skywalker
11. Last jedi
