Having read Circe, it strikes me that this painting is not how Circe sees herself. It's how mortals see her. That's one of the most interesting things about the book--it's an underdog story and as she slowly invents the practice of magic she becomes more powerful and impressive, but she never considers herself some kind of all-powerful sorceress. She has lions because she likes having pets. She casts spells to protect herself and the ones she loves. This painting helped remind me of how good that book was. I might even go read it again.
Read your own life away and learn about a thousand other lives -- a fair trade I think. My 3 favorite art books are: - The Art of John Harris by John Harris - Dreamland by Boris Vallejo - Great Fighter Jets of the Galaxy 1 by Tim Gibson
