I replaced one of these on a Dodge journey that a friend of mine had a few years ago. The center of the flex plate was completely broken out, I am very surprised that it was still driving.
I think this is a known issue that has been kinda brushed under the rug, not only do I remember reading on some forums about several other people having this issue but I also find it odd that my local Dodge dealer just happened to have the flex plate in stock on their parts shelf. Pretty strange for something that shouldn’t normally need replaced.

I'm wondering if this is what's causing the rattling with my son's mom's 2015 GC. It gets louder when the AC is on

That is why it’s so important to look for multiple issues, and running it with the belt off is a great way to confirm the accuracy of the diag, love your work work Mike, keep up the good honest work

Definitely weird that the sound manifested when the AC was running.

Still cheaper than a new car

Wouldn't parts and labor be about the same in the end? Flexplates are only $45 compared to the compressor which is in the hundreds of dollars, and the labor should even it out. Please correct me if I'm wrong, I'm a shadetree/mobile mekanik.

@TheWhoudini1974 not sure on prices for a compressor, but at most 2-3hrs of labor plus Evac and recharge of freon. Compared to 6-8 hrs to remove and reinstall a transmission, I'd say a compressor is cheaper.

Book time is less than 6 hours and that flex plate is probably 130.00 from mopar so I’d say 700-750 depending on the shops hourly rate

I just had a "no start" on a 14 Civic. Flex plate was broken around the crankshaft bolts. Found 1 dowel pin missing. Appears to have had the engine replaced at some point in its life.

I have replaced about 15 of those flex plates and then usually about a year later I would then replace the bad transmission, so if they have over 60k miles I tell the owner to replace both at the same time.

@@notchback93 Our transmission pump went out at 87k miles, had to have the transmission rebuilt. Dodge can kick rocks.

That's gonna be fun to replace. Front wheel drive is a pain.

Actually they are one of the easier transmissions to remove I think book time on that flex plate is only 5.5 hrs, I just did a transmission on a gmc Acadia it paid 13.5 hours by comparison

How many hours of Labor did it take to figure out this problem. 🤔
