you need an underground root cellar, because with storms comes power outages and while the gas heater are nice you are fighting those thin walls. plus the dry heat will damage the trees also. You really just need to just decide to do it right or suffer loses every bad winter. good luck

You need those long swimming pool noodles.. Cut one straight down only one side and slide iit on the door crack. That will cover that open slot you got

I have a greenhouse very similar to yours and I have similar weather, I recommend a tarp. I have mine covered and it will help with a small heater if will work. Also the silver colored tarp will not absorb heat so it won't get to hot inside

Great find on the diesel heater! I like the recommendation of the pool noodle in the comments to close the space for the exhaust tube & your idea to harness that heat as well :-) 26 in there with sub-below outside seems like a great victory to me!

Kind of expensive but well worth it is if you can put up bubble wrap sheets along the top and sides inside the greenhouse. The bubble wrap acts as a air insulator and helps to keep the cold glass from radiating towards the center of the greenhouse and helps to keep the heat from escaping. Could also use passive heating by placing flat black painted barrels full of water, could add a touch of salt to lower the freezing point of the water. Also you could lay frost cloth over the top of the fig plants to form a micro climate within a micro climate of the greenhouse, I would recommend moving the figs away from the glass and putting them in the center where the heat will be most concentrated. With the figs near the glass they can receive frost damage, if you ever put your hand near a frozen window pane you would know, the cold emanates a few inches from the glass. Hope this helps

Incredibly good ideas! I’ll look into the bubble wrap and pull a few trees away from the glass that are touching it! But yes, if I can pull this off, it is just a different ballgame. I’d be creating a very desirable micro-zone 8/9 in there and that’s thrilling!!

@afig3539 I've seen people use bubble wrap before, probably looking at a 10 degree boost during the day and 5 degrees better at night due to the insulating properties, plus it allows light to enter as well.

That’s a really great save. 5 degrees is a life saver in situations like we just had.

That cold snap was bad! I’m glad mine are in the garage. Maybe you should store your trees then bring them out in March. I love the diesel heater. I’m thinking of getting it for early spring. I have the Buddy propane heater. Which is nice because you can run it indoors without exhaust issues. But it way cheaper using diesel fuel. Maybe using some pink foam insulation sheets might help you? We had about 6” of snow here. Garage went down to 36 degrees. Almost had to run heat out there.

It sure was one of the worst! I’m really not wanting to do the shuffle, Catherine. I’m going to risk it and see if I can make this a viable situation. Because in the end, it just may be the best thing I’ve ever done. In this, I feel like the risk will be worth it. If not, next year I would probably put them in the garage like you suggest. 🙏. Good luck to you, my friend! I’m praying for an AMAZING fig season for all of us!!

      @@afig3539 I understand not wanting the shuffle. I’m hoping it works for you. 😄 Here’s to 2024 ☕️ 🪴🪴

How does it connect to your app? Aren't you too far for Bluetooth and there's no Internet out there?

Good question! For me, it connects at about 70 feet from the unit. Not more.
