This song is merely an entree to Black Sabbath, and is all about that iconic riff. And yeah I'd agree with yall, that there's nothing particularly nuanced about the songwriting on this jam and it's not exactly the best representation of some of their timeless qualities. Also worth mentioning that the album this song is from, Master of Reality, is all about doubling down on the distortion and the hypnotic sludginess of their centerpiece riffs, which at the time was unheard of. Because Black Sabbath didn't just play Metal, they invented it wholesale from the entrails of blues rock, and songs like this one came out in 1971 when nothing else sounded like this. So much so, Master of Reality alone spawned the whole genres of stoner, sludge, and doom metal, and even grunge. They were so groundbreaking they were even considered to be some kind of satanic entity by a lot of fundamentalist christians at the time. Toni Iommi, the lead guitarist, is rightly considered to be the undisputed godking riffmaster of the known universe. It's entirely possible he's actually an omnipotent being, like some kind of interdimensional entity who came down to earth just to gift us peasant monkeys the purest expression of powerful music. Ozzy Osbourne takes a bit of getting used to, but he has this blues-y colour and charisma to his vocals which gives Black Sabbath a unique melodic edge over their contemporaries and indeed all the bands that have followed them. Highly recommend Sabbra Cadabra for it's catchiness, although you guys could legimately pluck any song at random out of a hat and come up trumps. Songs like Sweet Leaf, Sabbath Bloody Sabbath, A National Acrobat, their self titled track, Killing Yourself To Live, Paranoid, iron Man, After Forever, Hole In The Sky, NIB and Symptom of the Universe are all bangers, just to name a few lol. Cheers boiz
That guitarist doesn't do too badly for a guy who lost the tips of 2 of his fingers to an industrial accident! He made 2 prosthetic finger tips so he could carry on playing. Paranoid, War Pigs, N.I.B and Iron Man are worth a listen. Seeing as Gabe loves his guitarists, you really should show him Ozzy with Randy Rhodes playing Crazy Train or Mr Crowley. You're right though, it was his solo phase.
The Guitarist of whom you speak is left handed and so strums wiith that hand and thats where Heavy Metal comes from after an engineering accident at work.
Black Sabbath didn ' t need a very technical superlative voice , they where great as a band and for the majority of metal fans the greatest of them all
The drum kit put out a restraining order against Bill Ward after this song. Nice rection, old school lives on, earned a like and subscribe!
More black Sabbath please !!!
Bristol UK 1975. I saw this amazing Band

Black Sabbath 1968-eternity🤘
Ozzy's vocals were more in the background on thus one. Usually he is much clearer.

In my opinion (born in 1971) this is the 1st "heavy metal" song. Can defend my position any day
Come from up the road from me the original heavy rock band
It's worth doing lyric videos with Sabbath as they usually have a great message, including this track. The same goes for Pink Floyd.
One of the least complex and surprising songs. It's a stage 2 or 3 rabbit hole Sabbath song.
Love it anyways.

T shirt 33 is annoying
