- I ended up here unexpectedly and turned 72 hours into finding the best things to do in Tromsø and the surrounding area. I share with you what it's like to visit the northern part of Norway and how amazing it can be to take a spontaneoud detour from an original plan.
This is how I ended up in Tromsø after conquering Finland's highest peak, Halti, as part of my project to reach the highest peak in every European country.

Growing up and living in Tromsø, it's refreshing to see a traveller's perspective of the place
The bird you saw was a ptarmigan in her winter clothes, a member of the grouse family.
Looked like "Lagopus muta" (latin name) or "Lagopus lagopus". Fjellrype (rock ptarmigan) or lirype (willow ptarmigan) in Norwegian. Fjellrype should supposedly have a black streak from the eye to the beak, unlike lirype. I don't think I saw that here, so probably lirype? Think lirype is more common of the two too.

Great video! Nice place! I liked the Arctic cathedral! We have mini libraries like that around where i live but they are not in phone booths. Yeah, you take a book and put one back.

I live 5 minutts away for Prestvannet and it is my favorite place in Tromsø. Right now is so beautiful 😍 🦆 you should come back to Tromsø in the summer ☀️🤩 and also visit sommarøya.

The Fjord called Kaldfjord, the first part, Kald, just means cold in norwegian

Normally you can expect to py upwarss of $500 per night for a hotel room during tourist seasons, you got real lucky
Think the bird may be what we call _lirype_ or _dalrype_ (or if you're wearing fancypants you'd call it _Lagopus lagopus_ but could also be wrong)

I live right by Prestvannet. I've gotten some magical photos there during the midnight sun months.
I can recommend the weekly and bi-weekly jam sessions happening around the city, both as a spectator and a participant:)

The bird is a rype in Norwegian. It’s one of the most usual animals to hunt in Norway, it’s very delicious, especially the heart which my family is cooking in the brown sause.
This is a type of video I’d watch at 3 am, probably because it is 3 am, but anyways.

To understand the name of Kaldfjord, all you need is to look at the map. The inner bend of Kaldfjord and Ersfjord are both almost straight west, and due to the mountains on both sides of Ersfjord, it focuses the ocean wind into a strong west wind that hits the inhabited parts of Kaldfjord hard. And that's how that fjord got its name of Cold fjord (kald=cold). Even during the warmest summer, it was always a cold wind at my grandparents home in Kaldfjord.

Ptarmigan I think you call them in Canada,(or grouse if your british), or "Fjellrype" as we call it in norweegian. They make strange click-cloking sounds.

Contact if you need to rent a room or apartment in Tromsø. By regular rent prices it's 3 month minimum for rooms and 6 months minimum for apartments. Exceptions with short time rental (less than 30 days total). Rooms, apartments and stationary RVs, be in touch if you are visiting.

Dont know Why tourists go to Tromsø when you can visit Harstad instead. The way better city in Northern Norway.
