Dead "Yard Dog" (truck) Stuck Under a Trailer!!! What to Do??? What to Do???
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 чер 2022
- Hello Ladies & Gentlemen and as always, thank you for watching. Today, it's just me and the Rotator having to figure out how to remove a dead, non-running, yard dog, yard jockey, toter truck, whatever you wish to call it, out from under a loaded trailer and then to a repair shop. The truck won't run and it has no air. The fifth wheel requires air to release it, so, this could be interesting. Also, things get a little tight (cramped) while trying to move around with the plant still operational with trucks coming and going. I hope you all enjoy this video!!! Thanks for watching and God bless!!!

My common analogy, "there are many ways to reach 10". I could have approached this (any) job several different ways. The approach method is important, but more important is achieving the desired result, safely.
Again, a very special thank you to all my viewers, family, and friends who having taken the time to show their support. May God bless and protect you all!!!

Just for clarification.....there is no deceased four legged fur-baby in this video!!!! The type of truck I was called to tow is called a "YARD DOG" in my area. As with many things, there are different names for different items. This type of truck can be called by other names, but I know it as a "YARD DOG". The title was not intended to be misleading in any way nor was it intended as "click-bait". My viewers know that this is a family-friendly channel and I would not show the type of content that some people are mistaking this title to mean. My family loves our fur-babies!!!! Thanks for watching and God bless.
That’s what a yard-dog is!!! I live near the General Mills cereal production plant and these things are everywhere!!!! I always wondered what these are referred to as!
HahahA same.
Was really worried for a split second. That would have crushed my heart! My 15 y/o fur baby crossed over recently on June 8th @ 6:27am from stomach cancer/old age. 4 hours after a tornado!
I never thought of ratchet straps for the steering wheel. 1st truck I pulled backwards I had a piece of rope
It DID NOT WORK. an old man said use the seat belt. That worked better but the mechanic was not happy.
@@USN-LT-Lee they're also known as spotters they just affectionately know them as yard dogs....why I have no idea
When i read the title i thought you meant an actual dog. Very glad to quickly learn it wasn't, stay safe Ron!
I thought the same thing! I was going "Wait... this can't be right. Ron wouldn't allow it." Then I re-read the title and I'm like... "ahh Yard Dog tractor!"
@Dan W. Same here. We call those things shunt motors/shunters on thus side of the pond.
I was thinking the same thing.
Lol and who knew Ron had his own airline????? Hopefully I’m not the only one that caught that word play.
That did not even occur to me. I knew yard dog was a tractor or whatever. I agree, Glad it was not an "animal". If it was, not sure he would have posted it.
agreed, stay safe Ron and team and everyone
Before I started watching you, I thought the job of someone who ran a wrecker was to simply pull up and hook a chain or cable onto the disabled vehicle and just pull it out of the ditch or whatever. It didn't take me long to figure out how wrong I was. I think you could literally take a vehicle apart and put it back together, including a big rig, and I am amazed at your level of skill. I will never look at wrecker drivers the same way again.
His folks started the company out as a repair place if I remember correctly. He added the towing to the family company...... I do agree as it would be a safe bet he could take a truck apart, and the put it back together.
I've really loved watching his videos because, personally, as a technician I apply the things he talks about when I think about how they engineer stuff. I also love talking to the wreckers and they all know him and we will converse about the most recent debacle
Good morning Ron,
"... but, we'll figure it out; that's what we do."
What a beautiful line! I believe it embodies one of the characteristics that attracts me to your channel.
Thank you for sharing, Ron, and I trust you have a blessed day.
Thank you very much!!! God bless.
@@RonPratt 😊
That must have felt strange with no rain, power lines, parts falling off of the wreck, or 70 mph traffic.
Well put
When you said dog, I thought you meant an actual dog lol..... we call them yard goats where im from tbh
Those Ottawa's are SO weird to work on. In my younger days, I was a Service Manager for a truck rental & leasing company. One of our big customers leased a TANDEM Ottawa from us, and we did the maintenance. They're extremely heavy, hard to access things, and wear out a lot of parts, especially hauling loaded trailers raised up, which put a LOT of load and stress on components!! This took me back to those old times! Thanks, Ron!!!
I'm surprised there isn't an air intake supply Schrader value built in. Saving wrecker crews from fabri-cobbling their own connection.
And lack of a rear towing eye...
Bizzare....
When he said "tap into air supply" i heard "love lift us up where we belong..." in my head 🤣🤣
In the UK we call them “Shunt vehicles” or just Shunters and very occasionally Tugs.
I had seven on my maintenance schedule and over 200 trailers, they where manufactured by a Swedish company called “Terberg”.
They all had Cummins 6BTAA5.9C-173 and Allison MD3060 transmissions.
Another good video. 🇺🇸🇬🇧
Terberg is Dutch! 😉
And would frighten the life out of you when you were turning on a wee slope with a trailer on the back 🫣
Good Afternoon My Good Big Bro Ron Pratt Sir & God Bless You & All Of You're Whole Family & All Of You're Whole Staff Today & I Am Still Praying For All Of You
Driving a yard dog was my last job. They make the job of moving trials from the yard to dock. And in the case of were I worked from dock to dock
We had 3 docks were I was working and at one time had a 4th about a mile down the road. I didn't like going down it very much 20 MPH was top speed on the yard dog. People don't like it when you are making them go show like that.
Stay safe and God bless. Dan
You made me feel good. The top speed on mine was 26 mph!
That old girl has definitely seen better days! Excellent job getting it out of there!
Good job be safe I’m following you from Saudi Arabia
I love "Yard dogs" we got an old S series IHC at work it has no hood the hydraulic 5th wheel doesn't work.
To release the king pin you need a 3 lb sledgehammer. Oh the drivers door fell off so for a long time it didn't have one.
It's got a mechanical Dt466 that Starts every time. It's more reliable than our Ottawa. Lol
A good all in a day's work video. On to the next one. Life just keeps on trucking.
I have been watching a long time and I believe that's the most unconventional hookup I've seen yet. Kudos
Well at least there's no task that Ron can't figure it out. I like it when a plan comes together . God bless and keep God on our side 🙏 🙌 ✨️.
That is what they are called here too! Good job getting it hooked up and towed to the repair shop!
Now I have learned another mechanical term. Thank you Ron Pratt for this informative lesson. God Bless You.
Good Friday morning Ron! Thanks for sharing!
Sorry Ron, miss tapped.
My comment is meant as an endearment from a grandmother.
Hugs to you for giving me
Plenty of chuckles today. I love you teaching with humor. Your camera was set up for good shots.
Thank you.
That type of truck 🛻 in the UK is called a TUG, was a bit confused when you called it a 🐶 DOG
Nice job you'll are doing stay safe
Well done ron..just fun to watch you
I had a "simple tow" dispatched to me a couple weeks ago. Nearly an hour after being on scene, I finally got it hooked up and ready to tow. 😅 good luck Ron and stay safe bro.
Yup.. It's rarely just a "simple tow." I had one tonight, easy. But earlier today? Went to a breakdown, "Suspension issue." ... Pickup truck. The front wheel broke off, axle snapped right behind the brake rotor. That took around 45 minutes to load. Nothing about that was simple...
The 1st time I saw you used the self contained racket straps, I had to get some and I love them. I need to by a few more.
Those ratchet straps are AWESOME! I always keep a couple sets in my truck and a couple more in the garage. Menards is where you can find to.
These are the types of vids that I love 🙏🏼 reasons why I keep making my own concrete UA-cam videos
Hi Ron and team!
I'm glad you edited the title. :)
Not being American I immediately thought it was an unfortunate canine, and didn't want to find out. I should have realised what you meant from your previous posts and admirable professionalism.
I've been watching your videos for a while now and they have set the standard from which I view and judge similar content from closer to home. I am constantly amazed at how unaware a lot of the recovery operatives seem to be of the potential dangers around themselves, and find myself repeatably referring back to your videos as to how it should be done.
Keep up the professionalism!
@14:38 I got scared. Saw the red truck moving and I thought you were rolling. 🤦♂️ those air line release pliers are cool. I towed 2 of these before. One of them didn’t have a steering wheel so I had to tie the steering arm on the gear box to keep it from moving.
Ron you always figure out a way to get the job done right and safe and God Bless you and your family and friends and be careful and safe and may the force be with you
Good morning Ron & crew! stay safe & hydrated out there in this heat! Keep doing a wonderful job!
Almost didn't click on this video thinking it was about a real dog... But I know Ron would never show anything like that. Glad I watched!
Where i worked we had a very used jockey and after much whining finally got a brand new one. Trying to keep it clean inside was a challenge because nobody would keep the door closed or they would leave the window opened.
I used to power wash the outside and inside every night. (Put rags over the radio) Kids on day shift beat the crap out of it. Management looked the other way!
A man who understands his work and is capable 👍And a tastefully professional driver. I follow you and And a👍🌹💯 tastefully professional driver. I follow you and enjoy watching
Great video Ron glad to see that single axle yard truck being towed for repairs stay safe Ron.
Aw man! Love it when a plan works! Great job Ron, keep it up! Love the variety
what a cute little vehicle! would love to actually see one. thanks, Ron.
I know a company in Northern California that would sell you one....or a dozen. They seem to get eaten fairly fast in the ports.
@@davidsellars646 Yard Dogs are what you get when you remove all of the frills and comforts from a road tractor. You don't even get a full cab.
There's a dairy processor in town here that is split between two or three properties in the industrial part of town. The properties are close enough together that they use this class of tractor to move giant milk tank trailers between facilities on the public streets. All little neighborhood streets, speed limits 35mph and below, so it doesn't take much truck to do the job. They are all registered with license plates.
I Was listening to you while I was taking up some flooring, (headphones on, phone across the room out of harms way) and when you were looking at the back of the Dog I said ‘not much’ just seconds before you did & laughed. My fiancé came in to see why I was cracking up.
As always great job Ron you the " MAN "
Ron I knew perfectly what you meant. That’s what we call them here. Great video and job well done. 👍👍👍❤️
I really enjoy watching your skills in action. Your knowledge of so many vehicles is amazing. I know you can solve any problem thrown at you. Please stay safe and God bless.
the big dog helping the yard dog
Watched one of these in New Zealand struggling up a ramp to the second level of the inter Island ferry, due to the trailer being seriously overloaded!
Greetings from Yard Dog Operator, Northport, Port Klang, Malaysia..love your content😍😍😍😍😍
I am always impressed with the multitude of skills you have & need for each job. Love your attitude "We'll figure it out, it's what we do!" Stay safe & God bless you & yours!
Ron makes my day
Well thank you!!! Thank you for watching and God bless.
@@RonPratt god bless you and your family
Great vid Ron! So many names for the same equipment. I've been driving one of these for almost 25 years and I always knew of them as a Yard Horse. And while I've driven Ottawa's, I'm a confirmed Capacity man. Easier entrance and exit, inspection, just tougher not to mention more room in the cab without the wraparound dash. Easier to keep clean too.... To each their own.
Watching how you tied in to the air system on the yard tractor (my area's lingo, for those wondering) made me realize a perfect example of the "multiple ways to get to 10" notion. You tied in just downstream of the air drier. I personally would have used the trailer air supply line at the back of the tractor, and back-fed air through that. Just hook it up, press the red in the tator, press the red in the tractor. Boom, air. But, as with the notion, multiple ways to get to 10. Your way is the 5+5, mine is the 8+2.
Breakfast sammich and coffee and Ron video... good start to a Friday.
Have a GREAT weekend Ron! Looks like even in the yard you have to watch out for other trucks! LOL
It is always the unconventional that makes the best videos. Thank ya Ron - something different from ya again. First time with a yard dog. Be safe and watch your six out there.
Looks like you have good idea of what you're doing. Great job. To you yours. B SAFE 💨💨💨💨
Thank You for another informative video.
Here in the UK they are known as "Dock Spotters". They are the type of truck that get lots of hard use and more often than not, a fair amount of abuse too. In some big distribution wharehouses they get used none stop 24-7.
David in the UK.
Jim Marshall (5 comments before yours said they are called "Dock Spotters" in the UK. PS, hamshackleton below your comment calls them said they are called Shunters in the UK. Must be regional names for them in the UK too!
Yeah, I would have called it a Dock Spotter too!
I know them as tugs or shunters, never heard them called dock spotters before
To me, in the U.K., this is a Tug and, it's driver is a Tuggie.
A shunter is a former road going tractor unit, now in semi-retirement. (For the American speakers, there's almost a joke, there.)
A shunter can also be a small locomotive, used for shunting/switching in a railway/railroad yard.
Dock spotter is a term I've heard, just not often.
Hey man I'm loving that you're putting some shorter time length videos on here a lot of reviewers like me are more apt to watch those then to watch something that's almost an hour long love your videos man I love what you do
Ron I like watching your videos you and you employees make things look easy to do and that's a sign of you guys knowing what you are doing keep up the good work and stay safe
I'm so glad it wasn't a real fur baby I've got two of them lol great video and I learned something new about yard dogs,Stay safe and blessed 🙏❤️
Hello Ron, once more you show the immense knowledge and skill you have. Thanks for sharing and continue to stay safe 😷
Since I didn’t know the term “yard dog” before this video, I’m glad how this turned out. 🐕
So glad it wasn’t a real dog!! Be safe out there Ron.
God bless you and yours stay safe out there and thanks for sharing ✝️👍
Woooo terminal tractors!!!! I remember driving these dinosaurs when I first started shifting. Luckily my UPS hub upgraded them all and we have new mules!!!! 👌🏻, We have two autocarts and 8 Ticos, Love the visibility on the autocarts but the performance, turning radius, and commodities on the tico are superb! Now I'm reversing the set (double pup trailers)!
Ron, I appreciate the the knowledge you possess and the explanations for the reasons you do certain things for each tow. Every video is a lesson in what to do as well as what not to do.
Thank you so much for the positive comment. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Between the Rotator and some of those Fire Trucks my Dad used to drive in the late 50s and early 1960s you both earned your stripes handedly. It would be interesting to have seen dad handled some of those new fire trucks with the driving cab towards the back. Maybe he has a chance in Heaven. Dear mother is headed in that direction really soon. Maybe a few days or a few hours. we just don't know. Terminal brain cancer.
I knew exactly what you were after. What I couldn't figure out - at first - was why they couldn't just yank it out from under the trailer. No air immediately cleared up the confusion. I know folks call them different things in different parts of the country and in different companies, but if a driver tells a DC/warehouse worker they need a yard dog for some assistance most everyone knows what he/she is saying regardless of what the local term is. I can think of some fun titles involving skateboards and parking lots 🤔 .
We called em Yard Mules! Lol!
Hi Ron I am glad you clarified that about the dog. However one look inside that dog I am surprised you didn't wear a gas mask. That thing looked absolutely filthy. Surprised that it still ran prior to you getting to it. As always stay safe. Enjoy the weekend.
Very smooth,Ron.
Hello!
UA-cam recommends your videos quite a lot, letting me see rather older ones (Dec 2016) as well as newer ones. I so appreciate how your video equipment has been upgraded. And that you have had a habit encouraging people to help themselves where possible. I am greatly glad you get out of people's way if they do not need help, but you do not "abandon the field" in case they still need help. That is a worthy balance of efforts, a balance struck by experience and practice.
Thank you! __
Thank you so much for sticking with me on the channel and the positive feedback on the videos. I work really hard to upgrade and implement new techniques as I can. Thank you for watching and God bless.
Nicely done and explained as usual. Thanks Ron and stay safe.
Another great easy job done.
Good morning from Southeast South Dakota
We used to just connect emergency glad-hands together and push in the trailer supply on both units, this would the disabled unit. We had one that the starter had gone out and in the mornings we would do this to air it up and then let roll down the hill and pop the clutch to start it. Fun time, don't miss those days.
God bless you Ron.
@14:30 i thought it was rolling while you did that 😂
THANK YOU FOR SHARING THE VIDEO
Good morning, as always you do a great job. Take care and have a great weekend.
Amazing video, and as always may God Bless and keep u safe out there on the open roads
Short and sweet!
I love your vids and content!! Keep up the great work!! Love the channel!!
Morning Mr Ron be safe and don't get too hot drink lots of water. Prayers for your family and employees have a great weekend
I know they’re not, but your bright yellow safety chains always remind me of the decorative yellow plastic yard/crowd control chains 😂
Good way to start my weekend.
Great video as always Ron! God bless!
....good job, keep safe
Thank you for making this video. Seen on 24-6-22 at 17:15 in the NL.

Great job and as always... thank you for sharing with us.
Another great job done

Haha definitely thought you meant a real dog! I’ve not commented in a while but have been still watching. Hope you’re well :)
Looks like a big bad dog. lol. I was wondering when I saw the title. Looks like alot of work. have a great day be safe.
Awesome video keep up with a great work and be safe out there.
Awesome job and thank you for another awesome video God bless
5:58 its like "I believe I can fly, I believe I can touch the sky" when the object came right off
Ron, I kinda figured out that you meant those single seat yard trucks, especially because , where I live in Washington county maryland, there is a semi-parking yard, and we see THESE types of trucks , at least once a week, when we head to Hagerstown, to go to the grocery stores /shopping!!!! Great, safe job as usual!!!!! Much love , Ron to you and your family /team!!!!! Stay safe in whatever you do on a daily basis!!!!!! God bless you and your family /team!!!!!! Your friend Bob Compton from maryland
have a great day. Thanks for the video
I actually thought you were talking about a dead dog. But wish you could put more videos up. Miss watching them.
Smart thinking saving the day. Easy as Pie😀😀
Awesome , Thanks Ron 😀
