I came across this lawn and noticed that it was a disaster compared to the neighbors. So, I hopped out of my truck to go knock on the door. I told the homeowner that I would love to make it look better for her. She told me that they take care of it themselves and aren't interested. But, when I offered to do it for free, she changed her mind pretty quick...

I was also thinking that but there are so many scams in the world... Sadly I would be very leery of anyone offering to do a job for free and not have a catch or try to sell me on something afterwards like a 'maintenance plan'. Heck American Pickers would have to hand people a flyer that says what they do and what they want, and people still would hardly sell their junk to them.

It's unusual, though, when someone comes to your home out of the blue, you might not be in the right head space to show proper appreciation. She had an overgrown yard, she's probably got stuff going on and may not be a very social person by nature. I try not to judge those in that situation, sure she could have been more appreciative, but it's not like she wasn't appreciative.

In general, you might note with a house that maybe they hadn't mowed for a few weeks, or perhaps one that hadn't been mowed in some months or more. There are also things like not being edged for a while, or here, by sidewalk marks after edging, weeds haven taken a foot or more off the walking space, not in a long while. It's hard to make judgments of that kind. You never know what she was dealing with in general and on that day specifically. To me, she had the affect of a clinically depressed person and that's a hard thing to deal with. Who knows what happened to leave her in this house that she obviously is unable to care for the yard. Divorce? Death? Severe illness? Disability? Any number of things could have left her in this position. It's possible she has no equipment to care for it and no funds to replace it or pay for services. It's possible she's physically unable to do so. It's even possible that both are true. And it's possible that her neighbors have been unkind and made her feel bad about the situation instead of offering to help which has left her feeling guilty, inadequate, defensive and embarrassed. It doesn't mean she isn't grateful - it just means that she may not be able to process it right then and she's still in avoidance mode.
I applaud you, Spencer, for ALWAYS stating in the title or description that the homeowner or occupant was grateful and satisfied, even when your footage can appear to catch something else. It just shows that kindness extends far beyond restoring the yard to restoring some faith in those who are hurting and unable to care for their lawns for whatever reason. You are never harshly judgmental and just view it as a service that you can provide. I love that.
Happy New Year, Spencer! May 2023 be your best year yet!

If I were the homeowner my reaction would be a lot more animated! I hope you feel appreciated!

If I was the homeowner I would have at least moved the car out of the grass...

I agree 👍 I would be making a fool of myself if someone offered free help to me! 😘

If I was the homeowner I would have wondered why someone would spend an entire day working on my yard for free. That's weird.
Not sure if he explained he was putting her crappy yard on UA-cam but if I was her I don't think I would want people seeing me as the homeowner of that mess. Put yourself in her shoes a little and maybe her reaction will make a little more sense.

It never ceases to amaze me how different and better a yard looks with the edging done. Thanks for your hard work.

One of my favorite hobbies is mow blow & go...I was the neighborhood lawn boy back in the early 90s. Old neighbors still smile when they see me🙂

You worked so hard and did such a good job. The homeowner might not show the recognition you deserve, but your UA-cam fam does!!!!!!!
