- Step into Villa Vallombrosa -- the home of writer and interior decorator Annie Kelly, where every corner feels like a curated museum and holds a story of famed former tenants.

Nestled within the iconic Hollywood landscape, Villa Vallombrosa is a historical cultural monument built in the 1920's that was once home to New York socialite and antiquitarian Eleanor Dewitt. It's Tuscan Venetian style exudes timeless elegance and a rich tapestry of history, as it sits perched above Watsonia Terrace in the historic Whitley Heights area of Los Angeles. Annie and her husband, renowned photographer Tim Street-Porter, have preserved its original charm while infusing it with their own unique narrative.
From the intricate details of the curved, concrete facade to the whimsical charm of the Juliette balcony, each element has been lovingly maintained to honor the home's heritage. It is a treasure trove of antiques and mementos gathered from their world travels.

I moved to LA in ‘82 and the first place I lived was in the Whitley Terrace, supposedly the first place for wannabes. The houses above us captured my imagination and I longed to visit them. Well, here I am 30 odd years later, and you made it possible. Thanks so much for a dream come true. Your home is exactly as I imagined. Wonderful decor!!!
My sister lived in a stair house in Whitley too when she first landed in LA in the early '90s. Now she has a great apartment in the historic Krotona (Beachwood Canyon). There are some real hidden gems in those hills.
That gem is called Villa Vallombrosa and it was built in 1929 by Eleanor De Witt !! It's featured in Dream Palaces of Hollywood's Golden Age by David Wallace !! It's famously called "the House of Oscars" after it was "discovered" that nearly everyone who lived there prior to 1949 either won or was nominated for an Oscar 😅 !! It was also featured in the June 2005 issue of House Beautiful, as you can see I'm absolutely fascinated by this house !!
I’m curious about how many people lived there in those 20 years that you referred to
@@14ariel77 , MGM costume designer Adrian and Janet Gaynor(winner of the first Best Actress Oscar) lived there !! Other notable inhabitants were Omar Kiam ( costume designer for A Star Is Born), Oscar winner screenwriter Ben Hecht, photographer Baron Adolf de Meyer and composer/conductor Leonard Bernstein , opera baritone John Charles Thomas, playwrights Victor Walfson, Nathaniel Curtis and Dame Judith Anderson; by the way these were all renters of the property , all this info is in the book that I bought a few years back !!
@@emiliomazariegoswilliams743 well, makes sense that it was a rental property
Love these old Hollywood glam homes with wrought iron, secret gardens, etc
Terrific distinctive house beautifully furnished, decorated, and landscaped. I like the unpretentious and interesting tour by the owner. Well done.
Incredible. Hollywood Glam era home. What she has preserved and designed in this villa is a dream. LOVE ❤️
Oh, what a delight. A house filled with truly beautiful things, fabulous architecture and gracious conviviality. I adore your style! This is Dean Yoder from Long Island New York. Our home is on Homeworthy too. I was spell bound by your good taste. This is quite possibly the best home I have seen on Homeworthy. Please, please, don’t ever change a thing. Gorgeous!!!!!!
ABSOLUTELY ONE OF MY FAVORITES ... I know I will be back for many more visits as time passes. Impossible to take in all the details in a single viewing. HOW UTTERLY BEAUTIFUL ... And what a great tour-guide you are Annie. I have three of your books in my Amazon shopping cart right now!
One of the best Homeworthy episodes that is both historic and architecturally nuanced for Hollywood Hills. Loved all the Tony Duquette furnishings and artwork as well. Quite an iconic home with all the past film celebrities who visited or lived there, Adrian in particular.
I loved this house and lady! I watched this 4 times. Lovely!!
This was so wonderful to see, such a beautiful home and wonderful historical information. Annie Kelly did a great job and seems like such a nice person. Excellent! Thank you for sharing.
What a lovely home and a stunning garden. Thank you Annie Kelly for kindly showing us your abode. 🧡❤️🧡
♥️ Absolutely beautiful, adore the colours. I’m inspired. Thank you.
A house like a museum, very tastefully and beautifully furnished.😍🥰
Australian! 🥳 and a very well traveled woman with a spectacular home! Remarkable. Very talented couple. The courtyard wow!
Thank you both and thank you Homeworthy
OK! FINALLY! A designer who gets the TRUTH! YES!... a home's interior should reflect and connect to the home's architecture! Annie, you are an astute, thoughtful, and very talented designer. Ideally, it is the true designer's quest to bring forward the themes, ideology, location, and history of the home. When a designer works in this way the home will be truly classic and timeless, and it will feel much larger as it will be an EXTENSION of the architecture rather than an impediment of the architecture. I so long for the time when the days of the "eclectic contemporary mix" are behind us. Thank you Annie for sharing your stunning home and work with us!
Absolutely beautiful home and a beautiful older lady😊
Very nice. Especially the courtyard. Kitchen? Bath?
The choice and use of fabrics is genius.
That staghorn fern is unbelievable!
Decorating a house, to make it feel like you bought it with the original furnishings, is a true art. You have managed to capture rhe 'soul' of the house beautifully.
The Syrian wardrobe is a real statement piece.
As you said, it's a bit like stage setting a fantasy.
The was fun.
Very interesting, seems dark to me but I love all the unique pieces. Love the courtyard too. Great tour, love the home ❤️
The interior walls have that wonderful old palazzo finish which is so appropriate for a house like this one. And the Egyptian quilt in warm colors is truly amazing. Beautiful home!
It’s beautiful
Oh my goodness, it is such a treat to sit down with a cup of tea and watch this. This lady is FASCINATING. of course i love the house tour but she's so interesting i could have just listened to her talking with all her stories. I just love homes like this - with history and gorgeous pieces collected throughout her life and travels. so much to look at!!!!
As a maximalist, I am in heaven with all your layering, the textiles and the paintings. I wouldn't change the wall color either. It has a personality all its own. You can feel that old Hollywood glam about it almost like time stood still. It is a time capsule of elegance and charm!
It's even more magical than Danny Elfman's Mediterranean house which I thought I'd never say. This is one of my new absolute favorites. I love the whimsical but also dark feel.
The house is beautiful. So too is Annie's jewellery, I wonder if anyone knows anything about the rings and bracelets she is wearing ??? Divine!
Please accept my genuine appreciation for your home. 😍🌿
What a beauty, I couldn’t stop smiling for 34:22 minutes . Thank you so much for a great inspiration ❤❤❤❤❤🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
All the outdoor areas are hidden from each other..makes for really magical surroundings..complimenting this beautiful home..🌳❤️🌿
The Egyptian textile, what a find! It anchors the room. Homeowner is lovely.
It is the most stunning house! Fully worthy of Annie and Tim! Thank you so much for a very memorable tour!
Loved this tour! Thank you for sharing and for all of the work that you do!! xoxo
Lovely house.... I work with my husband on his construction business and can be trying
Thank you for opening your home Annie Kelly, which looks positively dreamy. I love the colour palette, sweeping style of the architecture and the high ceilings. The inner courtyard is enchanting. I am going to seek out your books. Thank you again.
They do say that our weather is similar to Southern Italy so this beautiful house should feel right at home. 👍🏼💕
... as a Californian, I love the LA conversation. Thank you!
Absolutely loved this house. You don't see many homes in the Italian old world style. Loved how she chose the interiors. I think I will copy that front entrance courtyard idea in my next build.
What an incredible home. Thank you so much for preserving such an important piece of history. The art and other collections are just fantastic.
Beautiful home! I loved your treasured possessions and outdoor dining areas❤️❤️
I've seen very few houses in LA irl I really like, and alot of ones online I don't care for however luxe they may be. But I've spent a good parr of 20 years in Italy and am pleasantly surprized to this Italian Villa there! Lovely tour and beautiful both in and out. What a sanctuary of a home! ❤
I recently spent some time in Florence and this house is making me want to go back. It's stunning and so beautifully decorated.
What a treat! Such a classy lady with exquisite taste. The little courtyard is fabulous.
Lots of unique and beautiful pieces. Thanks for sharing!
Beautiful and Beautifully Done💜🌺🪻

Don't ever say that again.

I adore this lady. She has fabulous taste. I love her home.
Love the touches of lavendar textiles all thru the home. Lovely.
Stunning house. I would have been interested to see more of it... like the kitchen.
Or any bathroom. Nope, the owner was more interested in showing books.
utterly stunning.
The courtyard was gorgeous!
Gorgeous House. The Portuguese bed is amazing.
I have been obsessing over this home for years after seeing another home tour. I absolutely love the Syrian armoir and have been searching for something like that for quite a while. Its magical! I love Tony Duquette, so very envious of all the amazing objects they got from his estate. What a magical place to live! She decorated it beautifully❤
WONDERFUL HOUSE, CHARMING HOSTESS, AND TONY D MEMORIES.......WHAT MORE COULD YOU ASK?
OMGG the best house ever😍😍😍😍😍😍👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷🩷
WOW! Just incredible! This home knocks my socks off!
Stunning❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Her name seemed familiar, looked at my collection of design books and lo and behold I have a copy of Rooms to Inspire in the Country, one of my favorites.
Thank you for bringing us into your exquisite home. I have enjoyed watching.
I drooled through the entire video;
This one of the nicest and most elegant houses, interiors and gardens on youtube. I’d rather have it in Spain or Italy but hey, combined with a pied-a-terre in Napels, Rome, Milan and Madrid I’ll get by.
absolutly stunning house and great lady host. 💞
THIS LOOKS LIKE SHE IS IN LONDON NOT CALIFORNIA AMAZIN💛
There aren't houses in this style in London!
@@pobstrel I was talking about the artwork and stuff for your information
Beautiful home
Guns played the bowl last year and i think a video back in the day, get a hold of duff from g n r , he'd love to see a gorgeous place. Plus I think you d get along with him, look him up if he's in town. He's mainly in Seattle mainly.. well injoyed your modernism style. See ya. 🙏🎵💫
Lovely just in the middle of decorating trying to reduce!
Gorgeous!!!!
Wish we could have seen the kitchen!
Thought that too😊
Dream home.
🥰
GORJESSSSSSSSS❤❤❤❤❤❤
дякую !!!! цікаво )))
What a charming lady
What a completely charming and engaging lady ! This has to be my favorite episode. The textiles, the architecture, all the memorabilia, the history lessons, all pulled together by one of the most delightful creators i've seen on this site. On top of all this, not one animal skin print... IMPRESSIVE ❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣❣
Must say again i lover this lady-----would love to meet her😊😊
f this were mine, I’d never leave!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
The writing on the egyptian textile says Welcome in arabic.
I like this ! It's like it's kinda dark and creepy! A Grown Man CAVE 😉😂 but I would have to remove some of the feminine pictures and designs! 😂
It might be more accurate to say Eleanor Dewitt had the house built.....rather than she built the house. My dad actually did build my house....brick by brick.
Beautiful Villa, wish we could have seen more of it and less of the art work and books lol. You couldn't pay me to live in Hollywood. Whitley Heights is a tiny pocket above gritty drug and crime infested streets.
Too much commercial and pretentious blog .People need less talking (lecturing ) and more just seeing beauty with background ,soft music .
Gallipoli war was against Ottoman Turks not Germans..
odd sense of glamour. it's more like her hair & jewelry and clothes.ODD
The architecture of the home is nice but the decor is a no, cluttered, disorganized, less is more, looks like she just threw stuff into the house.
