An Atlanta native, Emily Sermons discovered an unexpected love affair with the southern charm of Charleston during her frequent visits with her partner, Jay. The allure of the city's rich history, captivating architecture, and cultural tapestry led them to purchase a 610 square foot home in the heart of the city.
Originally a 1920’s hotel, Emily's home is a celebration of vintage and antique finds. Inside you’ll find brass finishes, warm wood tones, artwork from local artists, classic green striped wallpaper and subtle nods to mythology with marble busts that echo Emily's deep appreciation for storytelling. For Emily, decorating isn’t just a personal endeavor; it's an opportunity for collaboration with Jay. Their synergy is evident in every element, especially their passion for literature which is seamlessly woven into the fabrics of their home, as first edition copies of beloved classics adorn every ledge.
Emily’s home is a space where functionality meets aesthetics, reflecting her keen eye for design honed through Shoebox Designs, an online community she launched in 2021. As a product manager at Adobe, Emily craved a creative outlet, and Shoebox Designs emerged as the answer. WOW! She made that little house a HOME! She is so proud of her home and it shows! It goes to show you that you don't need a 2500 or 3000 sqft house to be a home. I love it! I love the way she pulled everything together. I love how she painted the checkers on her patio, I love the olive green wall behind her bed. She is not ashamed that she has small kitchen appliances. She is PROUD and as she should be! Good Job Emily! I'm Inspired.

The side and overhead windows that surround the french doors make a HUGE impact on the entire common space. Allowing the eye to extend beyond the interior walls adds to the sense of space in material ways.

I agree that not everyone has the ability or even care to work in their public speaking, it’s a very important skill that should be used more often! I mean those bored stay-at-home moms who just talk about themselves and treat the tour as being only about one person and not the stories behind the design.
That pull-out surface lined with green felt in her foyer piece is a writing desk. Very odd to be a part of a pie safe, which makes me think the piece is actually a secretary.

It's a secretary desk with a hutch. But I can see where it can become a "buffet cabinet" due to the pull-out part.

OK. I shamefully admit that I saw the title of your video a couple times and figured it couldn’t possibly be interesting to see a 600 sq ft home. I couldn’t have been more wrong! I LOVE your home and the way you’ve styled it. I can’t decide if my favorite part is your bedroom or the beautiful gallery wall in your living room. I have plans for creating a gallery wall in my family room, and I’m going to use yours as my model. I’ve learned a valuable lesson: Never judge a book by its cover or a home by its square feet. This young lady has impeccable taste for a start. It wouldn’t matter if she was furnishing a small apartment such as this one or a 3,000 sq.ft home, she has classy taste from her pretty finger tips to her Chanel slippers!
Love the wall of french doors and windows, which just expand the space incredibly with the doors open. The wood of the round coffee table, the back of the bar stools, the overhead beam and the back door... is perfect cohesion. Such a great use of space and art and furnishings. Love,love ,love Charles little sun chaise on the balcony!!! He is beyond precious! I also have a thing for hand objects. I just find them so interesting. And I like to collect wood boxes from the thrift shop for styling bookshelves and topping with a small art object or candle. I will definitely be checking out CandleFish.

Those "smoke, sip and snack tray" glasses were a part of my household in the 1960s!! My mom used them to serve puddings and custards. I had no idea they were a part of any other set. What a great memory. Thank you so much. I can't believe you collect objects with a hand motif. You are the first person I've encountered who also does that! I love the red chair in the living room!!! My grandmother used to have two in her house. They were yellow. I used to sit in them and draw when I was around 10 years old. Now I’m 40.
The red chair in the living room is from Lulu and Georgia. It's the Lilith Swivel Chair in Rust Velvet color.
That cabinet in the entrance hall is not for pastries far from it, it is a 19th century French secretaire a abattant (writing bureau)

Lovely home and very nicely done without being overcrowded. Btw the 'pie cupboard' in the hall looks more like a French marble topped secretaire with ormolou mounts as its has a pull out writing slope n possibly from 1880-1915ish

Omg, I love, love, love this woman’s taste! Despite the small living space, it has so many well chosen items and objects. Where do I even begin? I love the bar and the coat rack in the entry way. The wood finishes in both pieces are so beautiful. I love how she chose a marble fireplace that was scaled down to the size of her living room and how contained the gallery wall was, with its more modest size, right above the sofa. The old mailbox converted into a place to hold the “accoutrements” for her dog was genius. Probably my most favorite element were the 3 sculptural milk glass pendants hanging from the wooden beam over the island - such a beautiful juxtaposition of sleek and modern against rustic. And the built-in bookshelves around the bed - what a focal point to the bedroom! Her space may be small, but what she did with it spoke volumes❤

Love, Love, Love this home ! Classy but relaxed and well curated. I think this is my ideal style and I struggle to recreate it in my own home...I just don't seem to have the knack to get it to look classy and relaxed at the same time. It would be so easy to go overboard and the results would be stiff and too ornate ....but this home gets it SO RIGHT !!! Love it !!
