From someone with a mixed Catholic/Calvinist background (yes, that is a thing) I see the girl as "young in the Faith." She's idealistic, eager and thrives on hope. She's typical of new converts or young people who grew up with faith without encountering any obstacles in the dogma. To me the soldier represents "matured in the Faith". Not necessarily mature as in wise, but people who've been around long enough to know that faith is flawed, ideals are often unrealistic and hope is best tempered with a light dose of cynicism, but never lose faith altogether. To me this is a story about coming of age in terms of beliefs. Anyway, maybe I just interpreted it in terms of my own life experience.
19:28 I saw one analysis video hinting that soldier might be simply the girl's delusion. Representing her temptation to break egg, because deep inside she is very tired of waiting for the egg to hatch. The soldier is manifestation of her suppressed frustration. This is why at the very beginning of the movie the girl's hand turn into the soldier's hand. At the same time, It could be other way around. That the girl could be the soldier's delusion. Representing him seeking some pure innocent hope, that there is some meaning in this world. We humans cannot accept nihilism. We all need some romance and purpose in our life. Some purpose that world is beautiful place. This is why we create fantasy.
I hadn't noticed this detail when I first watched this movie, and it's just now sinking in that I'm seeing it, but they animated the roughness of stone when the man with the weapon is running his hand up the wall. At first, I thought his hand was shaking, but it was actually his fingers getting momentarily stuck on the rough texture of the carving in the stone wall. I love little details like that.
Been a fan of Mamoru Oshii and loved the movie after watching it You pointed out so many beautiful features of the movie and it's subtleties that I love from it Great video ❤
This is really a film were there's no right answer or wrong analizes. Is really like look at abstract paint and try to get meaning just by the title or the feelings you get by looking at it. Even me, being an optimistic, felt that your reading resonated more with what I got from the film than from the other analysis. Was always is good to wait for your videos!
My first time watching angels egg I assumed it had something to do with faith after the Noah’s ark monologue. The film is perfect in how it gives now real answer constantly observing both sides of the argument from the wanderer and the believer. I guess you could say the last scene was a statement on the girls worldview being the right one as the wanderer is so cynical he’s oblivious to his reality (he’s wandering on the boat he doubts exists). So in a sense their positions were switched. The girl was content in her faith while the man was restless and cynical searching for something that was all around him. Very dense amazing piece.
Thank you for your amazing video analysis! You really made good work! Regarding my analysis - I'll try to put it shortly: as we all struggle to understand specific meaning of all the symbols which we abstract from the movie and search for the advocacy in inner coherency of the symbols' meaning (correlation that seems logic: cross -> Christianity; egg -> source/unknown; birds -> angels/divinity; mechanical sun -> technology as modern deity etc.) we find out that all interpretations are more or less suitable and possible. We also agree that openness to different views is inherent to the movie, so to me the general AMBIGUITY of the movie is it's main feature (core) - just like in a dream (the movie is dream like and we know that dreams were Oshii's inspiration). Furthermore: religious symbolism, our own dreams, the reality that surrounds us - all that is AMBIGUOUS, so our reality is no better than reality in the movie. Or is our reality - on its very edge of understanding - surreal in the end? Once again! AMBIGUITY! All our symbols in religions are ambiguous, like our dreams and our understanding of our reality (what's really matter? what's energy? what was before the big bang?). The warrior says once to the girl: "keep your precious things inside you" - so we keep our obscure and intimate/internal dreams that send us back to the obscure (out/under)world of the Unknown and Spiritual. PS. Why does the mechanical sun descend from the sky (like the girl that jumps off the ark down to the town) and in the end rises from the sea (just like the girl's last breath when she fell into the water)? There is a strong relation between the sun god and the girl. It wakes her up, it asks the warrior at the beginning who is he; she also becomes the part of the sun when she dies (like a saint/enlighten). Once again - we are about to solve the symbolic riddle but than once again we end up with no or various answers - ambiguous! To sum up - the movie is to it's very core realistic and brings about a transformation to the viewer: from our basic everyday way of being to the deep and spiritual/meditative mode of consciousness so we can dive into the depths of our own subconsciousness (obscure god is already in us -> that's gnosis and medieval mysticism
you're right, we may never get an anime like this ever again done in this kind of style. as someone who does have a faith, your video resonated with me and brought up interesting points regarding this movie's themes or at least the interpretation you drew from this film. I think this movie has a duality to its themes that, as you said, is neither validating nor condemning the others view. But man, that image of the fossilized angel feels like it came from a nightmare along with the other embedded fossils all over the place.
I watched this movie a while back and uh.. I'm pretty sure I fell asleep before the end. I just dont have a brain for films like this. That being said, it made me appreciate this video all the more - some of the imagery is so obvious now that you've pointed it out😂 So thank you for taking the time and analyzing it
Excellent Video! I've subscribed. One point that was missed is that Oshii was going to become a priest at one point in his life, he even went to seminary - he has an intimate understanding of Christianity but had a falling out with it. IMO this film I think represents his falling out with that religion, with the fishermen representing empty dreamers who are operating solely on blind faith. You can extend that to the girl as well. I also wish Oshii was still making stuff this interesting, his more recent films have become almost incomprehensibly indulgent and not in a good way :(.
It isn't often one finds a work of art that doesn't serve to show us something very definite and directional but to give us a mirror of sorts, a litmus test to see where you fall. I really only saw this with Revolutionary Girl Utena as with its heavy use of symbolism and archetypes it gives you a story where you are left to decide the details for yourself, such as who among the characters are in the right or wrong and what questions actually drive the plot and motivate the action. But Utena starts out as a silly shoujo show, a school drama with added quirks revolving around fencing duels, while Angel's Egg starts at the deep end and goes diving right away. And I don't really see your point in the film lacking a physical release or availability on a streaming site, but where I live it is basically part of our culture as a people to just pirate everything. I don't know anyone who owns original disks of a film, and anyone owning a prescription to a streaming service is mildly baffling for being so pettily bourgeois. Anyway your usual level of quality on this video, what is to say it is the best researched piece on the subject I have yet seen, good work, I should have seen it earlier.
roger corman was not running new world pictures anymore in 1988 when "in the aftermath" came out but it went straight to video in the us. however i must admit that movie is the kind of oddity i love seeking out and it is amongst the oddest attempts at making something surreal accessible.common error though. another youtube channel good bad flicks when mentioning"roger cormans" new world pictures always shows the logo used after he left. but this video is mostly about angels egg anyway.
Every time I see a movie like this that is so "artistic" that you have to interpret what it is about I just can't help wonder if I'm walking into a "The Tale of Scrotie McBoogerballs" situation.
it presents downside of religion. in the end heaven in christianity and all religions is not such a good place. Your reward is basically worshipping God forever (like these statues, they represent people that achieved heaven) In Buddhism reward is live in world of eternal sleep Let's be honest it feels horrid in both cases. You are basically that mindless statue. You can't eat, you can't drink, you can't talk with others. You can't even move on your own will..... The girl reward for faith was being turned into a statue. The soldier is living lonely nihilistic life, but he is still free man. He is free he can still accomplish everything. The movie doesn't present what is good indentity or faith individualism or religion. It presents good sides and bad sides of both.
to me Angel's egg is one of those movies I won't get why people love it. tried several times to watch and it doesn't hit. I dislike this film and even after watching this video I just walk away with "oh neat"

I was surprised to see see KaiserBeamz had made an Angel's Egg and wondered why I hadn't watched it, then I realized it was uploaded 15 minutes ago.
Mamoru Oshii: It's been so long I forgot what it's about
Dude in Angel's Egg: It's been so long I've forgotten
....
hm.
Came right here to tell everyone Gkids got the rights to this film. They’re promising a theatrical and home video 4K release!

Angel's Egg is a huge inspiration to me. I wish we could get more Anime like Angel's Egg.

Beautifully animated but beyond strange.
surprised to see oshii's cancelled lupin project wasn't brought up, as it seemed to be the conceptual prototype to what would become angel's egg
Thank you for your amazing video analysis! You really made good work!

Nice use of AFX's Stone in Focus. Can't think of any other song to fit Angel's Egg

Oh my gosh, I used to LOVE Brows Held High!!
Ah! One of my favorites, so thank you^^

Nice Angel's Egg analysis, -Demo- Kaiser
We're back

I love this channel :-D
the time is ripe for more post-apocalyptic media in this vein. nice

I love this Anime movie :')
What is the opening song that starts the video I cant find it any were on the web. If some one could tell me that would be appreacated.
Just search for Angel's Egg OST ... its truly a heavenly song..
Glass no sogen
The version actually used is a track sampling glass no sogen- ua-cam.com/video/3goXxaeksFY/v-deo.html
what if Green Eggs and Ham was existensialist peace
What bugs me is all the fossils/skeletons. Sure they look cool, but what were they in life? What does it mean?
Angels, unknowable creatures, who really knows.
But what of the the statue of girl, almost like a Saint's icon?
it presents downside of religion.
in the end heaven in christianity and all religions is not such a good place. Your reward is basically worshipping God forever (like these statues, they represent people that achieved heaven)
In Buddhism reward is live in world of eternal sleep
Let's be honest it feels horrid in both cases. You are basically that mindless statue. You can't eat, you can't drink, you can't talk with others. You can't even move on your own will.....
The girl reward for faith was being turned into a statue.
The soldier is living lonely nihilistic life, but he is still free man. He is free he can still accomplish everything.
The movie doesn't present what is good
indentity or faith
individualism or religion.
It presents good sides and bad sides of both.
Great content, but it's Mamoru Oshii, not Mamarou Oshii.
