    Im in speech pathology classes right now and we just covered the topic of glottal/vocal fry, it IS damaging to the vocal folds if it becomes habitual. Over time it can cause a serious vocal fold disorder. if you catch yourself dropping down into glottal fry catch yourself and go back up to the modal register!

      Bianca Trejo it’s true! I have a vocal fry & my throat hurts SO bad!! 😭 it hurts constantly & it hurts to talk & so much to sing I can’t sing anymore! 😭 I had to have an ENT go up my nose & down my throat & he said my vocal cords are red & swollen but I don’t know how to stop! 😭😭😭 it’s just the way I talk & since my throat starred hurting the vocal fry got worse. I’ve always been an alto & had a low voice good for jazz. But omg I didn’t know it was damaging! If I knew that I would gave gone with sexy baby voice early on 😅

    I hate learning about bodily functions as it makes me not want to exist. Watching videos like this feeds some sort of weird morbid curiosity, but now I don't want to talk as I know I'll be vibrating my vocal chords and it just looks as if I'll rip them somehow. Even though I've talked all my life. I'll be over this in a few hours, probably.

    I think it's interesting that nobody addresses stress, thyroid function, genetics, or other physiological factors that might be playing a role. Sure, some people are just annoying, but some people (Katy Perry comes to mind) sound like they are physically incapable of producing quality notes below a certain frequency. While others (Lana Parrilla comes to mind) produce that rich, sexy baritone with no effort at all.

    I have a degree in this stuff, and your description was very accurate in my opinion. It should be noted that excessive use of vocal fry, such as using it in place of your modal tone, is inadvised because it can cause damage and lead to things like vocal nodules. Everything in moderation, people!

    This was a useful and informative video. So, thanks for that. However, aside from people's perceptions of and reactions to vocal fry (in others, naturally, because why would I ever object to my own, right?), I had heard that it was also potentially damaging to the long-term voice health of those who engage in it.
    I'll be honest: when I hear it over-used (which is an entirely subjective measure, of course) it annoys me for reasons that I can't fully explain. (Part of that objection is an acknowledged part of my upbringing: my father pointed it out to me in television announcers decades and decades ago - and in male announcers, especially - so I've been attuned to it for most of my life, though only recently had a name for it.) So I admit my own aversion to the sound when over-used, and that's in the open. But if there are also issues about it that affect the health of the speaker's vocal cords, then it would also be useful to know that ... and to have that as an additional reason to encourage people to STOP DOING THAT SO MUCH just aside from the simple reason that I don't like it.

    She is annoying to listen to because she seems to like using vocal fry. It does seem to be most common amongst young, american women who think it sounds "cool". Thankfully, it's not common over here in Britain.

    • @rubyred3580
      @rubyred3580 4 роки тому +1

      She's using vocal fry on purpose so people who don't know what it is can know what it sounds like. It's an educational video; she's trying to teach something for people who are interested. Appealing to aesthetics isn't the top priority. And it might seem to you that it's more common in young women, but this is not necessarily supported by data. In fact, there's not a huge amount of data yet, but the data that *does* exist points to the opposite. Studies show that young men actually dip into vocal fry more often than young women (which makes sense because men's voices are naturally at a lower average frequency than women's voices, and vocal fry requires dipping into an abnormally low vocal range), but when women do it, they are perceived as annoying or uneducated more often than when men do it, so it's just noticed more in women. And just because famous women like Kim Kardashian might do it to sound cool doesn't mean most people do. For a lot of people it's totally subconscious or involuntary, so it's a shame that people pay so much attention to vocal quality and allow it to detract from the actual words being spoken.

    Is vocal fry only used in English? I've yet to hear anyone use it in, like, let's say Mandarin, or Italian, or German, or Vietnamese.... French? Nah...

      Count Dracula used it while speaking in English, which leads me to wonder whether he used it while speaking in Romanian.😉

    It's more of a trend with female californian millennials though. And it's quite off-putting.

      +MemoTea There's definitely a trend of people noticing it and criticizing it in young women, but it's not a new phenomenon, and it isn't exclusively used by young women. Is bacteria self aware or can you make a video on it

    • @BrainStuffShow
      @BrainStuffShow  8 років тому +1

      +Timothy Link Lots of different researchers and philosophers have different definitions of what makes a creature self-aware, so it's always a hard question to answer. In the case of bacteria, though -- bacteria are single-celled organisms that don't have a brain. They don't even have a cell nucleus! So by most definitions, it's impossible for them to be self-aware.
      However, bacteria do participate in a type of communication called quorum sensing. Each bacterium releases chemicals that indicate how it's doing. Other bacteria can detect those chemicals. When a bacterium detects enough of any one type of these chemicals, it will change its behavior to go with the group. So in a way, bacteria do have a sense that they're part of a greater colony.

    Millennials, (female almost exclusively) on NPR and other radio shows, speaking through their throats & noses instead of from the diaphragm, repetitive rising and lowering intonation at end of sentences, FRY / CREAK & trying to sound sophisticated or knowledgeable when they're reporting something they know little about = NEO VALLEY GIRL, rully. Rully! Beyond annoying. Rully.
