Lies and deception. AKs are and will never be outdated.
On a more serious note, Bethesda did some retconning with the lore so they might not exist as of Fallout 3 or NV. That seems to be the intent, as Miss Brown directly mentions it to you the first or second time you talk to her.
The problem is you need to buy the plans off her and at that stage of the game you don't have enough caps. By the time you do come back from jolly adventures with your bag of caps you are starting to be fully decked out with all the 'real' guns.
So... yeah. I think they stuffed up.
The Junk-Jet in F4? Same problem. You find it doing the Brotherhood story line but at a stage where you are probably about level 10 and again starting to get your own cool weapons. Plus Danse gives you a gun as the quest rewards. To be honest I have never bothered picking it up and I have something like 1500 hours in that game.

There is evidence of multiple divergent points in fallout universe making it more on par with a parallel universe with slight changes here and there rather than a completely different universe happening at one point

I wonder if the combat shotgun could work if you thought of the magazine as being a device that feeds into what would effectively be the tube magazine beneath the barrel of your typical semi-auto shotgun. If you had a gas piston that served to cycle the drum as well as to ram cartridges into the under-barrel portion of the magazine and then also had the mainspring in the stock, it could theoretically work if the ejection port was a little larger and if there was a place for the bolt to go. It'd be a weapon that you'd probably have to clean/repair often, but that fits with how it is in the game.

The closer you get to the point of that divergence (about just after WW2) the less noticeable the changes. Butterfly effect and such. The further forward you go, the more those various differences compound and snowball into further and further differences through different circumstances creating different chances/opportunities and thus moving along further divergent paths.

Definitely played this game a lot and occasionally go back to it. I remember back then that I liked the Lincoln repeater even though it was fudged the reload. Interesting fact of a repeater with President Lincoln, Christopher Spencer who designed the Spencer carbine and rifle lever action was able to show it to Lincoln and for him to try it out on a target. Which his first shot aiming down the sight was a bullseye and his next shots were very close to bullseye. He was a good shot and he liked Spencer’s repeating carbine which resulted in him sending a message to chief of ordnance Ripley praising the Spencer and voicing that he thinks it would be great to equip the Union forces with in the war. Though Ripley wasn’t really as enthusiastic as the president about was for. But it did succeed in getting into the hands of Union soldiers more than the Henry rifle.

How will that even work? Borderlands guns have no point of reference to real-world weapons and everything about them is unrealistic.

He also admitted he didn't play any dlc which is blasphemous imo. Point Lookout & Mothership Zeta were effing awesome. Project Anchorage makes you straightup OP if you're starting a new game. Played 3 my first time after all the dlc was out & you walk away from that with full T45 pwr armor, a missile launcher, 2 unique & op melee weapons & absolute crap ton of ammo & mid-late game weapons. My vanilla playthrough was kind of a cakewalk lol.
