    Courage is not the abscence of fear but the will to own the fear.

    Hey Fran. Thank you for that. Please pass on to Jay my heartfelt respect. To go into that crucible undoubtedly changed him. Forever. The real opponent is inside us. To get in the ring, - to 'climb the steps' as you put it, - to face someone who weighs as much as you do, has trained as hard as you have, and who is going to try to knock you out, is a real test only truly understood by those who have done it. You remember how I said you are a Teacher, as opposed to an Instructor? This whole story is an example of what I mean by that. How fortunate Jay was to have had such a mentor right there, literally in his corner, when he faced his demons. For teenagers, in particular, having the right kind of mentor around during those crucial formative years, I believe can make a literally life-changing difference. Thanks again. Respect.
    Karl

    From my earliest memory as a child I was beaten mercilessly. So much horrible pain was inflicted on me as a defenseless child I was terrified of being hit. PTSD from the start. As I grew up my terror of being hurt never left me. I hated myself for a coward. It took most of my life to get past it. Today it's too late for me to ever box, but I learned to stand my ground and fight and give an accounting for myself. I wish so much that I had come to this at a younger age. But alas today I content myself studying the art of boxing and learning about the great boxers. Too bad I never met someone like Mr. Sands when I was younger.

      Hi Richard. It sounds to me like you've come to terms with those early life bad experience that conditioned you in such a way. You have turned things around, and we all still experience fear, but functioning in the face of that fear is what counts...so great credit to you sir 👍

    I cared about the result until near the end, when it's true the result didn't really matter, the win had already happen by getting up and facing that fear, it's unbelievably hard, you are trying to overridden your survival instinct, that's such an incredibly difficult thing to do, jay was a champ that night!

    Thanks for sharing, true courage is when you face fear in the eyes and everything you learn you put it in action. I can still remember my first day sparring I spelt blood on the floor sparring someone more talented then me, I went and got tidy up and put toilet paper inside my nose and carry on, my mind was playing games of doubt but I refocus and refuse to give in. After my sparring session I got respected for not giving up. Thanks true inspire.

    Really good video. It makes me very happy to see that more and more videos dealing with the mental side of combat sports/martial arts, fear most of all. I have been involved in martial arts for the last 20 years or so. I remember fear almost being a taboo subject in gyms/dojo's. Few would admit to it or were prepared to discuss it, much less given advice or examples of how to deal with the second opponent., that being yourself and negative feelings. It is also very easy to mistake fear for the effects of adrenaline in a fight/spar.

    That was great , I think Fran broke that down well , the guy had an epiphany right there in the ring , all boxers have to go through it , but to have it
    right there in the ring , that’s nuts , what was key was the “two years” , so the guy knew how to box , he just had,nt conquered his fear , lmagine it was about to consume him right there at the end of the first round , but his option to quit was removed , and he had to face his fear with the only
    tools left to him , his “two years” of training, remember Fran said he was a good trainer , a tall skinny dude who kept himself to himself , I can see him sticking this aggressive tattooed dude on the end of his jab , and catching him with hard backhand counters all off the back foot , if he was catching him clean , that’s going to force a count in the amateurs , which ultimately led to the stoppage I presume , nice one...

    I randomly came across your channel and at first I didn't think I'd learn anything and thought you were another wanna be youtube boxing coach. I sincerely apologize because as I kept digging in your channel I not only found instructional info, I also got inspired especially from this story. I literally wake up everyday feeling like a failure and I hate confrontation of any sort. I often get picked on because a lot of people think I I can't do much because of how skinny I am and I'm honestly sick of it. I just recently started trying to teach myself how to defend myself because I want to control my fear and prove others wrong. Wish I had the money to join a boxing gym but your UA-cam videos will have to do for now. Thank you!!!

    hey fran is shoulder roll technique effective in amateur ranks ?

      @hamasweza9917 8 років тому

      why?

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  8 років тому

      I prefer hands high Hamas as they provide solid cover, I agree with Cam. Mayweather does the shoulder roll but he has 12 rounds and to be fair he only tends to do it when he knows he can get away with it. Against a flurry it can be risky (I don't coach it).

    Hi mate, this video was amazing i can relate to it in so many ways, im 20 and been boxing a year now and have had 3 contests when it comes to competitions and the adrenaline takes over i handle the fight situation very well but for some reason when i sparr in my gym im always on the back foot waiting to long and dont let my shots go as for some reason i lack the confidence and worry what is going to comeback. Im not sure if its because i know its a sparr and i cant throw punches with bad intentions or it is a confidence thing. I also struggle as the people i sparr with in my gym im quite friendly with and dont have intentions of hurting them when i throw a punch. Could you recommend anyways of dealing with this? Ive asked my coach but he just says i need to beleive in myself and let my shots go. How do i use fear as my friend?

    • @diddlenessdiddlyness6263
      @diddlenessdiddlyness6263 8 років тому +2

      Keith Docherty I had a similar problem, the thing is since it's a spar let it be productive . Don't throw wilds shots but if your sparring partner does catch and block the punches. If he or she does it once again without setting it up let them pay for it,that way they won't do anything reckless in a real boxing bout. Over time that sparring partner will learn,adapt and grow.
      Also use your jab to control yourself and situation, it is indeed the most important punch

    • @myboxingcoach
      @myboxingcoach  8 років тому +2

      Hey Keith, glad you like the video. I think Diddle Diddly has it right on the money (first time this year I've agreed with someone named after a nursery rhyme :-) - he gives really good advice. In sparring you can make it competitive without trying to hurt the opponent. Sometimes shots can land harder than you wanted, sometimes lighter than you wanted. You will learn, listen to you coach and you'll be sound.

    And by the way, did Jay win with uppercuts? I think you said he gave his opponent two standing 8 counts in the second round, or something like that, so I imagine he was giving him some power punches, and you mentioned how the guy was sticking his chin out.
