I was going to keep them up because even as they tried to say "he didn't say that" they posted the quote in which he did say that. His direct quote is: "If some Nazi wants to march at my side at a Free Speech rally, I'm no one to stop him. So long as he doesn't try to turn said march into a Nazi rally, obviously." To which I'll quote Dr. Jens Foell: "If there’s a Nazi at the table and 10 other people sitting there talking to him, you got a table with 11 Nazis." If you watched the video and missed the point about liberal civility allowing fascism, I would implore you to rewatch some of the videos I linked to throughout. I'm sure you've already watched them, but there's always more to gain from a second viewing.

Interesting bit about the experiment, literally one student stood up against it (Tearing down the posters and making her own anti-movememt ones) she was ostracized and bullied by the other students. After it was all said and done the teacher commended her in front of everyone
An interesting book was written about it, im relatively sure it is called the wave, its written about that girl and actually very interesting. (Edit because I just realised I didn't say this, my mom actually lived in palo alto in that time and I still go there to visit extended family frequently, its super weird to hear about it in random media lol, also the small town in texas I grew up in is literally only known for a cult that had a massive police raid and movies made about it, for some reason most of the small towns relevant to me in any way are randomly famous)

I was a professional DM until recently, and I can authoritatively confirm that a huge part of recruiting players for games was sussing out the weirdos. I felt like I was constantly playing word games with alt-right fae, trying to trick them into answering my riddles three and revealing sexist or nazi sympathies.

It’s a good question, but it’s also very difficult to answer. The experiment is pretty much taught in every German school, because it’s easy to relate to something like this happening in a school/classroom. It was a good "answer" by that teacher, it just wasn’t exactly ethical...
@@MilurielWell one big reason why the movement took hold is because Germany was in extreme poverty from getting blamed for WW1 and they gave the people someone to blame, thus a means to get rid of their current, horrendous situation. If the people are suffering, they will take any chance they get to get out of their situation. Easy. Explained in two sentences. Poor people are desperate, if you want the answer in four words. Of course it can also happen to not desperate people, but Germanys situation at the time was not normal by any means. That already had desperation and resentment brewing across the country for over 2 decades. It was so much easier.

one thing i would add about the parallels drawn in the prologue. a huge takeaway from the "experiment" is that - its fun. it is fun to be part of the mob. it is electrifying, addicting, seductive, empowering, tempting, to be part of the opressive force. it takes genuine and conscious effort to resist. it is all to easy to slip in, and when you do, you'll like it. why climb out.
I think a main issue with the experiment (as much as i think it is actually a very interesting one) is that he didn't include an outgroup. That's a key difference between fascism and more ordinary ingroup dynamics. It would also go way too far to do that in a school lol. But if for example, Blondes weren't allowed in the 3rd wave, that would be a more cogent parallel, as fascism is built on an un-alterable outgroup. It's key that not everyone CAN be in the party. Which is also why I actually don't believe that "it could happen to anyone", because people who are in those excluded groups cannot fall in line, and I'd sure fucking hope people close to those excluded groups wouldn't.

It's what would happen if, during the Crusades, a portal directly to hell was opened beneath Jerusalem, and the forces and cultists of both heaven and hell have been fighting a non-stop war for 800 years, so it's now 1914, so it's extended to stalemate trench warfare, but with the grimdark horror and cult-like fanaticism of 40k. Anyway, from my understanding, when all the recent drama about the female custodes started, a lot of 40k fans migrated to Trench Crusade, only to be told there were plenty of women in that setting too, and if they didn't like it they could get stuffed.
"The Wave" was an amazing German film about this exact social experiment. I haven't seen the American version, but I've heard the German adaptation was much better (including the ending, no spoilers). Teacher conducts a social experiment with their class, triggered by a comment that falling for fascism is silly considering we watched the rise and fall of the Nazi party. Within weeks, the school has a violent, insular group that can't be stopped until the teacher pulls the rug out in the end.

Race in games like DnD has always been more about species than a racial system. Of course some of the different species have been racialized by the different settings, but the core of fantasy "races" is related so much to innate abilities and genetic makeup, sometimes from different worlds entirely, calling them "races" doesnt even fit their actual purpose in game.
True, the only reason we call it races is because it is associated with fantasy genre. Species makes more sense. Humans and elves are more like neanderthals and our ancestors - different species who can have children. Human being a race makes no sense since there are different races of human in universe

Humans and Otyughs cannot breed as far as I am aware, they are different species. The original games only had humans, elves, dwarves and halflings/hobbits, so there were no half-lizardfolk trabaxi edgeling garbage to muddy the waters.

Minor point of correction (because I hate the "Hasbro ruined WOTC" narrative): Hasbro purchased WOTC last century. There were only ever a few dozen sets published without their influence. I don't like cutting corporations like WOTC slack just because people THINK they are the little guys. No, they have long been inseparable from Hasbro. The vast majority of players have NEVER played MTG without the influence of Hasbro.
Devils advocate, there's always the possibility that Hasbro changed their approach to oversight over WoTC. I'm deeply familiar with corporate overlords letting a business cruise along and do it's own thing, while their focus is elsewhere, until one day they finally decide to put their full attention on one of their acquisitions.

I think it's been an uphill battle to reign in the less savory side of D&D. The early campaign modules were often about slavery, racism, and sexism. It only follows that there's a contingent (usually older men) who view the changing landscape as a loss of those core tenets. I have a small example, and I think, a microcosm of the whole debate. I once played a one-off game which was hosted at a local library and open to anyone. The players were myself, two D&D friends, as well as two teenage girls who were obviously new to the game. The DM was an old schooler, probably in his 60's. The background lore he gave us at the start was overly long and tedious but eventually we got on playing and, as you do, found the local tavern. The first thing the DM described were the "tavern wenches" who happened to be all the local teenage girls from the village. He described how they wore low cut tops to show off their cleavage and get bigger tips as that was the only job available to them. The real teenage girls at the table looked mortified and checked out for the rest of the game. They hurried off as fast as they could afterward. Call me crazy, but I think Wizards of the Coast would have wanted those kids to have a positive experience and not feel sexualized while playing their game. I think anyone who says it's woke for them to tame down those aspects that make people uncomfortable just doesn't understand capitalism.

Gen Z here. I was fortunate to have escaped the alt-right pipeline. It began with people taking down stupid ideas, and because he happened to be an easy to debunk alt-Righter, I was exposed to the holes in other conservative and far right talking points. I count myself lucky, because I have seen quite a few people who could have been me in an alternate timeline, and all I can say about them is that I genuinely hope that they can break their conditioning, as the fear the masters of the alt-right puts in their hearts and minds makes the world seem like an ugly place.
Good job! Now just avoid being conditioned and swallowed whole by the breadtube pipeline and you should be well on your way to being an independent, healthy free thinker.

I felt so excluded in my youth when I wanted to play MTG and D&D. The boys around me were not very interested in letting an afab into their gaming circles. Now, in my 30s, I decided to get back into it. What a change! I've been watching Dimension 20, where it seems like they make a real effort to include everyone. I was overjoyed to find that there are so many left-leaning and diverse players and circles. There are even leftist and antifascist ttrpgs like Penumbra City. I guess I'm now disappointed to hear that tabletop gaming has more than its share of vocal right wingers, just like video gaming (I always play alone or with no mic). I'm glad I haven't run into many of them. I hope kids who want to get into these games don't feel pushed out like I did.
It's nice to see that D&D and TTRPGs in general don't suffer from the same problem as before to the same extent... Sadly there are also new problems. The community has been shattered. Even circles that seem inclusive on the surface tend to have their own questionable beliefs that keep getting brought up in the background. I recently cancelled my subscription to dropout because of their rampant antisemitism. It's truly a shame when you think you found a really cool group of players, a very talented DM and a team who clearly make efforts ; when it feels seamlessly inclusive, and then bam, jewface, support for antisemitic organizations. I was absolutely disheartened, especially since I had had to leave a group just before that, because they were starting to become overly Qanonesque. I wouldn't say that the future is bright. As people decide to trap themselves in close communities, disdain for openmindedness and empathy arise. It really feels like even in leftist groups/communities, you need to belong to certain recognized minorities and you need to hold views that are only more and more radicalized (thirdworldism, panafricanism, historical revisionism, alternative medicine etc). The only solution is to bring back people together and to restore trust in scientific institutions but I feel like we're too far gone at this point, and that's not even talking about alt right.
This line of thinking is literally: "I am so happy to discover gaming groups that align with my politics! I am super sad do discover there are gaming groups that don't align with my politics!" Like wtf. None of this has anything to do with gaming. If a social group doesn't want someone as a member they shouldn't be shamed into accepting them against their wishes, it will only breed contempt and eventually hatred. Nothing is stopping anyone from forming their own groups including the people that THEY want to hang around.

I remember being like 12 years old trying to learn Mageknight and the sweaty i was playing against kept making weird comments about my cheaply painted models. Like, disdainful of the assumed asian workers who painted them. He seemed really angry about how crappy they looked, I was so confused. Most of my life i've been told ADOLF HITLER AND XYZ are fascist but then that just kinda associates fascism with bad but cancer isn't fascist so actually knowing why it's bad is important to me
One thing that is important to add to the thrid reich, is that a lot of people also just had similar thoughts from the beginning, antisemitism was already very popular in society (all over the world actually), so yes, some got tricked, but some also just agreed with the ideology. This is something that gets highlighted in german school, for a good reason. It takes the opportunity away from people, to push the guilt towards the politicians, generals etc.
Based on the video I watched before this one; 31:12 this may be why the "call them weird" strategyseems to be working this election. It prevents them from reframing the conversation. The only thing you can say to that is, "I'm not weird and here's why", "I'm not weird, you're weird", or "I don't care what you think". Either way, or puts the.... "ducks" on defense and eliminates the ability to reframe.

And what excuse would he have given if one of the kids complained to the Department of Education (and arguably what they should have done once it got to this point)? And while often secondary to often the scars of emotional and psychosocial destruction of said students that suddenly turned on them (who, you know, might have been friends or may have exacerbated existing social capital deficits)--The fact that it lead to physical torture of students. "Hey, look how easy it is for kids to be like fascists?" "Yeah, it's almost as if we're paying you to not do that--And yet you violated rule 1 of your conditions of employment and your duty of care. Thanks for the possible lawsuits and mentally scarring a whole bunch of our pupils." "Oh, do you think such a history lesson wouldn't pass an ethics board?" "If you need to ask ..." While it makes for poignant reading and assessment, I kind of wish people wouldn't valorize this type of gross negligence and abuse of power.

People usually mean keep contemporary politics out of X. Look at old Star Trek, it was a political show, but instead of focusing on comparisons with contemporary politics, they instead distilled the idea down to a moral, ethical, philosophical question, and usually played both sides. It was done well, and done right, and there's a reason why it was successful and well liked as such. Warhammer is a good example of how not to do it, with Sargon of Akkad being immortalized in lore as a character now, because some writer disagrees with his political positions. I don't need a character appearing an announcing the values of free market and small government in a D&D campaign or Warhammer to feel good about myself, I'd rather see a functioning medieval society which I can immerse myself in.

On one hand I will say I broadly agree with OP and his points. I think being aware of certain people trying to take over spaces to recruit for far right extremist groups is important because it is more common than one may think. On the other hand, some of those biases can be seen in the OP himself, and it highlights a big problem with the “online left”. An obsession with virtual nonissues so unimportant that an hour long video is centred around a Reddit interaction where one of the people involved happened to be a fascist. The video is also badly structured, has some questionable editing decisions at times (video game OST being used over discussion of a real murder) and portrays OP in a light to be as unhinged as the people’s he’s batting against in ways.

But to extend the use of the word in this way... sounds like something that would be functional for anyone who follows Karl Popper's misinterpreted warning about intolerance. In short, a Nazi isn't just someone who checks the requirements of the definition (which for nazi-fascism has been a complex academic enterprise). A Nazi is anything people want to believe about their opponents, because it's an adjective (and a horrible ideology) that is pejorative in and of itself. This very tactic was wielded by nazis against bolsheviks in their beginning. There are already plenty of adjectives appropiate for him. Far right, Alt Right, Nativist, Populist...

The rise in the alt-right is also the lowering of creativity. When you obsess over making people fit into certain boxes, you can't think outside of them.
They love RPGs which allow them to live out their tradcath fantasies. The type of person that insistently only plays male human warriors or paladins in worlds with many other options. They love the idea of being a holy warrior literally. I think it's part of why the Warhammer community has gone to shit. They reduce these realms to nothing but vehicles for wish fulfillment, conveniently trivializing or letting the blatant depravity of these settings wash over them.

There people who play these things to actually explore a character legitimately or enjoy a more low-fantasy character, but I think there is a not insignificant disproportionate number who use them as a vehicle for trad wish fulfillment and almost never play anything else (except maybe dwarves, because they've been stereotyped to fetishize tradition, bigotry, crassness, and alcoholism) mostly they're obsessed with conservative values. This is all anecdotal of course, it's not as if it's an easy thing to survey, but I can tell you with my almost two decades of RP experience that most people want to RP themselves at first, and many people do not grow from there (maybe an occasional one-off character, usually a meme). The proportion of things I see and hear from them out of character handily reinforce this to me. There is a reason communities for 40k Kriegers and Scarlets in Warcraft have such bad stereotypes.

I think a main issue with the experiment (as much as i think it is actually a very interesting one) is that he didn't include an outgroup. That's a key difference between fascism and more ordinary ingroup dynamics. It would also go way too far to do that in a school lol. But if for example, Blondes weren't allowed in the 3rd wave, that would be a more cogent parallel, as fascism is built on an un-alterable outgroup. It's key that not everyone CAN be in the party. Which is also why I actually don't believe that "it could happen to anyone", because people who are in those excluded groups cannot fall in line, and I'd sure fucking hope people close to those excluded groups wouldn't.

It's what would happen if, during the Crusades, a portal directly to hell was opened beneath Jerusalem, and the forces and cultists of both heaven and hell have been fighting a non-stop war for 800 years, so it's now 1914, so it's extended to stalemate trench warfare, but with the grimdark horror and cult-like fanaticism of 40k.
Anyway, from my understanding, when all the recent drama about the female custodes started, a lot of 40k fans migrated to Trench Crusade, only to be told there were plenty of women in that setting too, and if they didn't like it they could get stuffed.

I haven't seen the American version, but I've heard the German adaptation was much better (including the ending, no spoilers). Teacher conducts a social experiment with their class, triggered by a comment that falling for fascism is silly considering we watched the rise and fall of the Nazi party. Within weeks, the school has a violent, insular group that can't be stopped until the teacher pulls the rug out in the end.

Race in games like DnD has always been more about species than a racial system. Of course some of the different species have been racialized by the different settings, but the core of fantasy "races" is related so much to innate abilities and genetic makeup, sometimes from different worlds entirely, calling them "races" doesnt even fit their actual purpose in game.
True, the only reason we call it races is because it is associated with fantasy genre. Species makes more sense. Humans and elves are more like neanderthals and our ancestors - different species who can have children. Human being a race makes no sense since there are different races of human in universe

Take your pick - Warhammer 40k alt-right people being BTFO by recent things GW has been doing, Trench Crusade putting the kibosh on the same group of 40k alt-right people trying to use their game as their new bastion, when the makers on their own discord were like "Wow you guyse are gross, gtfo rofl," and banned pretty much everyone who swarmed their discord with the intent of turning into the discord equivalent form of a Nazi Bar. The devs of Trench Crusade weren't gonna have that.
And those are just the two most recent developments, there's -so- much more that's going on in the tabletop world. Changes in Dungeons and Dragons, further stories being introduced to the Battletech lore that add queer characters of ultimately no consequence but since they exist they gotta hate it. I think it's been an uphill battle to reign in the less savory side of D&D. The early campaign modules were often about slavery, racism, and sexism. It only follows that there's a contingent (usually older men) who view the changing landscape as a loss of those core tenets. I have a small example, and I think, a microcosm of the whole debate.
I once played a one-off game which was hosted at a local library and open to anyone. The players were myself, two D&D friends, as well as two teenage girls who were obviously new to the game. The DM was an old schooler, probably in his 60's. The background lore he gave us at the start was overly long and tedious but eventually we got on playing and, as you do, found the local tavern. The first thing the DM described were the "tavern wenches" who happened to be all the local teenage girls from the village. Gen Z here. I was fortunate to have escaped the alt-right pipeline. It began with people taking down stupid ideas, and because he happened to be an easy to debunk alt-Righter, I was exposed to the holes in other conservative and far right talking points. I count myself lucky, because I have seen quite a few people who could have been me in an alternate timeline, and all I can say about them is that I genuinely hope that they can break their conditioning, as the fear the masters of the alt-right puts in their hearts and minds makes the world seem like an ugly place.

I felt so excluded in my youth when I wanted to play MTG and D&D. The boys around me were not very interested in letting an afab into their gaming circles. Now, in my 30s, I decided to get back into it. What a change! I've been watching Dimension 20, where it seems like they make a real effort to include everyone. I was overjoyed to find that there are so many left-leaning and diverse players and circles. There are even leftist and antifascist ttrpgs like Penumbra City. I guess I'm now disappointed to hear that tabletop gaming has more than its share of vocal right wingers, just like video gaming (I always play alone or with no mic). I'm glad I haven't run into many of them. I hope kids who want to get into these games don't feel pushed out like I did.

It's nice to see that D&D and TTRPGs in general don't suffer from the same problem as before to the same extent... Sadly there are also new problems. The community has been shattered. Even circles that seem inclusive on the surface tend to have their own questionable beliefs that keep getting brought up in the background.
I recently cancelled my subscription to dropout because of their rampant antisemitism. It's truly a shame when you think you found a really cool group of players, a very talented DM and a team who clearly make efforts ; when it feels seamlessly inclusive, and then bam, jewface, support for antisemitic organizations. I was absolutely disheartened, especially since I had had to leave a group just before that, because they were starting to become overly Qanonesque.
I wouldn't say that the future is bright. As people decide to trap themselves in close communities, disdain for openmindedness and empathy arise. It really feels like even in leftist groups/communities, you need to belong to certain recognized minorities and you need to hold views that are only more and more radicalized (thirdworldism, panafricanism, historical revisionism, alternative medicine etc). The only solution is to bring back people together and to restore trust in scientific institutions but I feel like we're too far gone at this point, and that's not even talking about alt right.

One thing that is important to add to the thrid reich, is that a lot of people also just had similar thoughts from the beginning, antisemitism was already very popular in society (all over the world actually), so yes, some got tricked, but some also just agreed with the ideology. This is something that gets highlighted in german school, for a good reason. It takes the opportunity away from people, to push the guilt towards the politicians, generals etc.

Two favorite tactics when faced with harsh critique is "deflect and project". People usually mean keep contemporary politics out of X. Look at old Star Trek, it was a political show, but instead of focusing on comparisons with contemporary politics, they instead distilled the idea down to a moral, ethical, philosophical question, and usually played both sides. It was done well, and done right, and there's a reason why it was successful and well liked as such. Warhammer is a good example of how not to do it, with Sargon of Akkad being immortalized in lore as a character now, because some writer disagrees with his political positions.
I don't need a character appearing an announcing the values of free market and small government in a D&D campaign or Warhammer to feel good about myself, I'd rather see a functioning medieval society which I can immerse myself in.

On one hand I will say I broadly agree with OP and his points. I think being aware of certain people trying to take over spaces to recruit for far right extremist groups is important because it is more common than one may think.
On the other hand, some of those biases can be seen in the OP himself, and it highlights a big problem with the “online left”. An obsession with virtual nonissues so unimportant that an hour long video is centred around a Reddit interaction where one of the people involved happened to be a fascist. The video is also badly structured, has some questionable editing decisions at times (video game OST being used over discussion of a real murder) and portrays OP in a light to be as unhinged as the people’s he’s batting against in ways.

But to extend the use of the word in this way... sounds like something that would be functional for anyone who follows Karl Popper's misinterpreted warning about intolerance. In short, a Nazi isn't just someone who checks the requirements of the definition (which for nazi-fascism has been a complex academic enterprise). A Nazi is anything people want to believe about their opponents, because it's an adjective (and a horrible ideology) that is pejorative in and of itself. This very tactic was wielded by nazis against bolsheviks in their beginning. There are already plenty of adjectives appropiate for him. Far right, Alt Right, Nativist, Populist...

I lived with some "tradcath" types a few years ago, and let me tell you, they love these table top games.
They love RPGs which allow them to live out their tradcath fantasies. The type of person that insistently only plays male human warriors or paladins in worlds with many other options. They love the idea of being a holy warrior literally. I think it's part of why the Warhammer community has gone to shit. They reduce these realms to nothing but vehicles for wish fulfillment, conveniently trivializing or letting the blatant depravity of these settings wash over them.
@@Canukles I mean, I'm an atheist and I love playing male human warriors or paladins in fantasy settings. I like being a more mundane or righteous character in a world of mysticism and magic.
@@NotoriousTim Oh I am and do too, I'm not advocating any sort of stereotyping of these perfectly valid character roles. There people who play these things to actually explore a character legitimately or enjoy a more low-fantasy character, but I think there is a not insignificant disproportionate number who use them as a vehicle for trad wish fulfillment and almost never play anything else (except maybe dwarves, because they've been stereotyped to fetishize tradition, bigotry, crassness, and alcoholism) mostly they're obsessed with conservative values.
This is all anecdotal of course, it's not as if it's an easy thing to survey, but I can tell you with my almost two decades of RP experience that most people want to RP themselves at first, and many people do not grow from there (maybe an occasional one-off character, usually a meme). The proportion of things I see and hear from them out of character handily reinforce this to me. There is a reason communities for 40k Kriegers and Scarlets in Warcraft have such bad stereotypes.
@@Canukles I see what you mean, I probably just have good luck in my groups because everyone I've played with doesn't really fall on that side of the political spectrum. I don't mind conservatives or anything and when it comes to games like warhammer there is definitely an element of people that do sort of idolize that kind of zealotry or bigotry. Being a racist dwarf is pretty fun though.
