I developed an alcohol addiction for a while, while getting diagnosed with cptsd. I went to AA the moment I realized it had a strong hold on me. I’d say it made it worse. Induced a bigger shame cycle and I couldn’t identify with the idea that this was a disease, I was born with it and I’d struggle forever. I left that program and was sitting at home one day drinking, feeling shame and guilt for it, then it struck me to have compassion for myself, that I was drinking because of the enormous amount of pain that I was it and was just trying to feel better. I had understanding for that part of myself instead of shame. From that day on, I drank less and less, really without much effort. The more love and compassion I had for that part of myself the less I felt I needed alcohol to cope. I began eating better and doing yoga. Eventually I just don’t drink anymore at all. A more natural healthy state and lifestyle took my life over and I have healthier coping styles now.

TY for such a fascinating topic.
I had years of abstinence from most drugs. For the past 4 years I have dabbled with THC oils (sometimes smoke) because it gives me meaning. I am able to focus on my task, manage pain and hardship but I know that THC is addictive. I gotta work out a plan to limit my use however easier said than done.

If one could stop their addiction before they get help, then they wouldn’t need help.

If it's about choices, may I ask you whether you disagree with people who claim that there's no free will. I think of for example Prof. Sapolsky. Your answer would be appreciated. ❤

Whether there is free will or not is not really central. If you have more choices there is more possibilities regardless. It is the perception and feeling of agency and choice that is more important.

@@TheTTrickz Interesting to think that choices and free will are not necessarily connected.
