Thanks for taking the time to check out Hwei's theme! I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Riot Games for having me back to compose another Champion theme (although this one is obviously much different from Nilah's in pretty much every conceivable way). We worked really hard in order to create a theme that not only encapsulated Hwei's complex persona, but also told his tragic story. You may have already caught some of these details I’m about to share below if you've already listened at this point, but here are some general story bits that we tried to convey through the composition as well as the orchestration: ________ Solo Flute: Represents Hwei's "Light" (His kindness, vibrancy of mind and upbringing on Koyehn) Solo Cello: Represents Hwei's "Darkness" (His dangerous intensity of expression and imagination as well as horrified intrigue and despair) Piano: The connective tissue between the two (Also represents his more grounded, melancholic temperament) Violin: Jhin/Jhin's influence (0:00 - 1:12) - His early, peaceful life. Painting his visions for his temple masters. (1:13 - 2:00) - As the years pass, he continues to paint according to the teachings of his temple (flute lead) while also venturing off on his own at night to paint his more "dangerous" and visionary art (cello joins). (2:00) - Jhin.... (2:25 - 2:37) - Pleading conversation and confrontation with Jhin. This eventually leads to.... (2:38 - 3:02) - Complete and utter devastation and betrayal, brought forth through Jhin's massacre. Hwei grapples with the shocking revelation and aftermath. He struggles to find balance between his intense sorrow and inner turmoil in conjunction with the hopeful empathy and kindness that lies deep within him. (3:03 - 3:43) - Present day Hwei, unshackled and wielding his art to fully express his complex visions in order to manipulate the world around him. (3:44 - End) - Quiet and lonely reflection that calls back to the intro (although now with more emotional weight and life experience). ________ So, there you have it! I hope you enjoy listening to Hwei's theme as much as I enjoyed writing it.
Remember Jhin's obsession with four? Interestingly, Hwei's theme has aspects and references to the number three (3) instead, from the inner meter (it almost feels waltz-y at times) to the little violin trills. It's like a dance... one that lacks warmth, but is filled with life.
My most favorite theme is Neeko the curious chameleon. This track makes me cry every now and then because it's so beautiful! I listen to tracks on my Px8 with an EQ, suffice to say it's heavenly.
He's almost as up my alley as Jhin. What a masterpiece of champion design. His theme is exactly what I was expecting. I'm pretty sure it starts in a major key, then we transition to minor at 0:51 and it sounds so tragic and full of sorrow. And then we even get a solo at 2:25, my favourite part in Jhin's theme as well.
I love how Hwei's ambivalent feelings are reflected in his theme. There's something somber that has shades of Jhin's violin and the trauma he caused mixed with how he helped Hwei embrace his own artistic sense, yet there's also something more hopefully and gentle with the wind instrument, that fits Hwei's choice of kindness and empathy. Both mix and create something new, bolder and adventurous, with a steadfast rhythm that suits Hwei's way of living. Amazing storytelling, GG Riot Music Department, another W for you.
Riot you really outdid yourself with this champion :D i dont care if he is balanced or not at the start, you cant always guarantee that at the beginning ofcourse. But im really happy how the design turned out and i've always wished for a champion with this kind of kit! Thanks for all the years of Entertainment and fun
Very true, I genuinely thought the spellbook champ would be kinda generic but I'd play him anyway, but no, *this* is how to design something fresh, I am extremely impressed, and coming out after Briar? Riot is on a roll with great editions that I have basically wanted for years Like, when I started league, I was like, I want to play a wizard who has tons of spells, for mid and support, a top lane necromancer, and a vampire jungler We already had Yorick, but now Briar and Hwei, I mean seriously, Riot is filling out all of the niches with really nice twists too I mean Yorick being a necromancer who is a tank with a shovel as a weapon, Briar the vampire, except she is an acrobat failed assassin hemomancy experiment, and Hwei the art mage from ionia who experienced destruction from Jhin, then fell into his own dispair, then serenity when he found peace in his new artistic expression He is also the first regular human male mage No Ryze and brand are not humans, brand is just a corpse, Ryze is blue and centuries old, I don't care what his bio says, I refuse to count Ryze as a "human wizard" Also I just really like the idea of paint magic, and combining art together to make something new
Something about balance: Releasing a champion in any state that is NOT strong (overpowered) is a bad practice because you will not gain good data because way less people will play them. An example from history: Akshan was released and had a really bad winrate because people did not know how to play him so people didn't play him much, so Riot artificially buffed him a lot to increase playrate and then reverted the buffs on the very next patch because he wasn't actually weak. Balance is about long term ability to make things relatively viable and knowing what levers you can pull and where power lies. Hwei should be overpowered on release. It's not an oopsie. It's the point. Expect every champion to be too strong on release or after a mid-scope or after a VGU. If you want to make a good game overall, you need as much data to work with. And if it means a champion is overpowered for a few patches, that's fine. The overall health of the game is better for it.
I like how the violin/other strings instruments in Hwei's theme can be interpreted as the darkness Jhin awoke in him, meanwhile the wind instruments can be interpreted as the light and innocence Hwei still has. Or maybe I'm completely wrong and just a loser idk
Hey, I hope you get the chance to read this: Art is made to be interpreted. There is no "wrong" interpretation. Yeah, sometimes people may not see what the artist intended, but intention is different from interpretation. Interpretation is one of the key factors of art. In fact, audience interpretation helps artists grow and evolve, as feedback allows them to learn from their piece, so they may improve in the future. Critiques and interpretations, "wrong" or not, exist for clarity's sake. If an artist never has their work interpreted, how are they to know if they landed the mark? "Wrong" interpretations are just as important as the "right" ones. Though, again, interpretations are personal; intentions are factual. An artist's intention may not be fully clear in their piece, thus the interpretations help them understand what they're missing and what they're good at expressing. Take it from someone who used to be a professional artist--your interpretation is just as good as the next guy's. What's important is you read into it, you felt something, and you expressed that. Maybe you are wrong, we don't know. What we do know is you provided very helpful feedback for the creator, and for every creator who may want to create similar stories.
I'm so glad Riot started crediting their artists. This video's even showing their faces. I absolutely love this! (It might have been happening for a few songs now without me noticing, I don't know, but I know this is recent)
So excited for him! The second you guys said there was an artist coming to the rift in an earlier video I was THRILLED! He's better than I had hoped for.
I love how shy and unconfident he appears when he's just walking around with his head down and his hands in his pocket with a slouched posture. Yet he springs to life when he brandishes his brush. He suddenly appears so confident, powerful and authoritative. It's great visual story telling that I think a lot of creatives can relate to.
I went to music school for instrumental performance No piece I studied nor listened to gave me the goosebumps and the emotions of 2:25 Ben Jacobson and Cameron Stone worked some serious magic on their instruments I cannot describe the feeling

His mind is so beautiful. Man I wish I knew someone like him, his way of thinking and speaking makes me feel less lonley... I guess cause someone sees the world kind of like I do too?
I love these theme videos also including the concept art. It's cool to see that someone like Sett had several radically different design concepts, but Hwei was so clearly defined right at the start that there was little to no change or variants.
The opening gets me teary-eyed. If this played while I was walking through a serene forest, I would start crying. This is an absolute masterpiece. So beautiful.
This theme is absolutely stunning. It captures the story of the character so deeply. When I first listened to the theme before even reading Hwei’s background I could feel the music alluding to a deep traumatic past connected in with being an artist. Just incredible
