    As an old guy, I've encountered other factors that can influence the choice of firearm. One is the reduction of accommodation, that allows your eyes to focus from far to near. Gradually as one ages, gun sights typically become harder and slower to focus on. Also, loss of portions of one's eyesight from problems such as glaucoma can cause problems using regular sights. Possible solutions to these problems are to use laser sights or red-dot sights. These sights are available for many guns but by no means all. So, if you need or particularly want these kinds of sights, you will want to limit the guns you consider to those for which these sights are available.
    An additional consideration you allude briefly to is the amount of recoil one can readily accept and still get in enough practice to be competent. The amount of recoil a person perceives varies greatly across individuals, but generally, for a given round, the heavier the gun the less recoil will be felt, although many factors can influence that perception. For example, you show both the Ruger LCP and the Glock 42, both of which are chambered for .380 ACP. Although the small and lightweight LCP is easier to conceal, most people will find the recoil to be rather "snappy" whereas the Glock 42 might feel comparatively comfortable to shoot. For some people, the LCP's recoil will not be a problem, but as they age and their nervous system changes, they may become more recoil sensitive and less likely to shoot their gun enough to stay competent with such a tiny firearm. So the Glock 42, which weighs considerably more and is substantially larger than the LCP, might be the better choice for them or others who are naturally more sensitive to recoil.
    There is no substitute for a person's actually shooting any gun they are considering purchasing. Only the person who is going to use it can tell how the recoil will be for himself or herself or how well they can shoot and administratively handle it. And, unfortunately, we need to be prepared as we age for a shift in our abilities and sensitivities which can mean a change in which firearms will work best for us. I say these things from personal experience. So, I wish each person the best of luck in finding their firearms and remind them that, even with the best helper with the best of intentions, they still need to make the decision for themselves on what is truly best for them. And what is truly best may change as they gain experience and change physically themselves. Rather than fearing such change, however, one may look forward to the joy of searching for and buying yet more firearms, which can be almost as much fun as shooting them!
    Great video! Thanks!

      All very good points!
      I deal with age-related presbyopia, and it really messes with my shooting accuracy at times. I figure I need to train without corrective lenses a fair bit, as I mostly just need them for reading or close work (like sighting a pistol...).
      A dry-fire trainer like the Mantis X2 can help a LOT, as it's about the price of 150 rounds of 9mm 115gr FMJ if you're living right, and can be used at home with a handful of snap caps (especially good in working on loading/unloading/tap-rack drills, etc) almost any time you can spare five or fifteen or thirty minutes to work on trigger control.

Not huge but I prefer 3o'clock and don't mind if it is noticeable. Anyone who is looking for it. I think they need to know I am. I'm not looking to surprise a would be robber. I would rather they fear the potential of a armed man. Rather than meet the reckless kid who's going to die for his stupidity. Thanks for all you do to keep us safe and informed. P.S. I always seem to go back to the old #26

    Im 71 and my EDC has changed over time. Started with 1911 and p239. Stayed with those two until my eyes got as old as I am. Sent a p229 off to have a Halosun 507c installed and while it was away I got a p320 with R1. Took about a week to get used to the rds. I feel better with the decocked 229 in appendix carry which I am switching to. The 229 is heavy, but after carrying lots of stuff in the military its not that bad. Wife has switched from p239 to 365 SAS. The rds helps out past 7 yards.

    In my country its harder to get licenses for multiple firearms so, as much as I'd prefer to have two 9mm EDCs, varying sizes for my 2 modes of dress, I need to choose 1.
    I'm 6', 160lbs, medium build, medium glove/hands, appendix carry (75% of the time I wear shirts/Polos outside my jeans).
    9mm is the caliber of choice due to availability here.
    From range use, I am rather familiar with the M&P9 2..0 compacts and can comfortably carry it well enough as my EDC.
    However for days with more formal (tucked in shirt/meeting) settings, I feel like something a bit smaller/neater could be more suitable.
    I've kind of narrowed it down to the M&P9 2.0 4", the Springfield Hellcat (trigger safety fixed) and the Sig P365xl.
    Unfortunately, the range I have access to, in 9mm, only have Glock 17 & 19, Sig P226 & 229 and M&P9 2.0 3.6" & 4".. and they don't have the P365xl or the Hellcat for me to try, to help me make the decision.. and our gun sale companies here, don't let you try before you buy.
    Do you have any info/advice that you can give to help make a final decision between the 3?

It took some trial and error but I found the right holster and the right gun for me to carry, and I mean every day carry. I prefer leather. Desantis inside heat is a great option, quality leather and I would add a nice cut so I can get a good grip on the firearm, it also holds my gun in place. I can also re-holster it from the seated position. There are a LOT of great options out there though, and my one gun is now an option of like 5 guns for carry. When I was shopping for my CC firearm, I looked at several firearms to get a feel for the grip and the trigger break as my hands are not large but they are thick and meaty. You need to find one (or several to choose from) that fits comfortably on your hands. Do your research and compile a list of quality firearms before you go shopping for your next firearm. My list consisted of 17 firearms to choose from and even though the gun store that I went to did not have every one of them on my list, I still have a wide variety to look at. Don't buy a SIG or Hellcat because John or Jane said so. Find one that fits you as you will be the primary user of your next firearm. After you have narrowed down your search from your list to just a few, only then can you choose by price, if that's what you wish, as you know that you will also have one that fits your hands. :-)

That being said living in the hot humid south I will be carrying a mod 60 SW 38 spl in different holster on many occasions. 38 spl get a bad rap sometimes but I can a test to the reliability of the effectiveness of a good 38 spl round. It also give me the confidence that I want be shooting my junk in appendix carry. Malfunction are very rare unless you get in a hurry and short stroke the trigger . The tritium sights really helped. And for anyone asking why would I choose that gun the answer is pretty simple.. I love 1911s but I have smaller hands and also this particular model has a 4.25" barrel that made for impressive ballistics and flawless expansion in the 380 cartridge. It's also a very light, reliable, smooth shooting gun. It's still one of my favorites and I would no doubt trust my life with it if I had to even today.

      As someone who likes the G3/G2C I couldn’t agree more. Great guns but I can’t find a single sidecar appendix holster for it. Glock 19 has an advantage because if there’s a holster company, they make a Glock 19 holster.

    My first gun was the smith and Wesson SD9 that I got on sale for $350 new. Got ammo and a galco holster that I enjoyed very much. And I learned to shoot that gun well. Never let me down either. I may even get another some day soon.

    Am 60 now and had plenty of experience fire arms and the MOST responsible thing about having a gun at all is knowing when NOT to use it . Having a 3 times dislocated right shoulder AND a bad back I would still prefer a 5 or 6 position on my belt as long as I can do it palm out for a faster draw right side . Also a 2 o clock would be doable with the right holster or course . Not strait up and down but horizontal pull .

    Carry the biggest pistol that you will actually carry. If it's so big that you leave it home all the time, then it's too big. Carry the biggest pistol that you will bring rather than leaving it home. It won't help much from home if you need it while away from home. For me, winter and summer are two different sets of clothing, and therefore two different carry pistols.

    A lot of great points here. As an avid shooter my self I think anyone can gleam some good knowledge from this video. Deffinitly should be shown to any new shooter or first time gun buyer. Keep up the good work man.

    I’m biased towards the staccato line it’s accuracy and usability just works plus a lot of the holsters made for them are very comfortable to carry

    Try the Underwood Ammo and the 380 is more than adequate.

      Agree! .380 is like a fart short of 9mm I bet it’ll hurt just the same too

    I like my Sig 225A1. Sure, being a single stack, it has the lowest capacity of all my similar sized guns which all have double stack capacity (anywhere from 10-15 +1) in 9mm, but I've trained the most with it and it's damn near like a mini Sig legion. Love that gun!

    I thumb over hammer re-holster my CZ P07 for that same peace of mind. It is my favorite carry gun so far!

    • @m4rvinmartian
      @m4rvinmartian 4 роки тому

      Have you ever tried pulling the trigger while your finger is on the hammer?
      Or are you depending on being able to realize quickly that the hammer is moving?

    • @Mr.Killswitch
      @Mr.Killswitch 4 роки тому +1

      If the trigger catches while you have your thumb over the hammer it will start to pinch your thumb and I don’t 100mph reholster. I also look down at my holster to verify the pathway is clear.
