Speaking of custom handmade knives I would really love to see you do a review of one of William Collin's knives - www.wcknives.com/production-knives They really seem to be built for hard bushcrafting and hunting work, and I have yet to see anyone say much of a bad word about them. In particular I would like to see what you think of his treatment of the AEB-L steel, which is supposed to be a bit better than the O1 that used to be his main steel. There's videos of the WCSK for example getting hammered through breeze blocks, tin cans, car doors, chopping through deer ribs, without edge damage.
He's minimising the production lineup quite a bit for January, some like the WCSK and Master Woodsman will stay but plenty will disappear for now, I think because he's getting a few too many orders for a one man shop. The Sportsman for example looks like an amazing kitchen knife. I'm going to save up for a WCSK though, it's a bit of a jack of all trades blade, but there's just something about it that really appeals to me. ua-cam.com/video/CWy8QBa2a6c/v-deo.html

Your advice re fixed blades knives is spot on. Years ago, I contacted a knifemaker who had a very small advertisement in the back pages of Blade Magazine. I collaborated with Alvin Kinsey for years on custom, handmade knives made to my specifications at very reasonable prices while developing a great relationship with a master, guild knifemaker. Fixed blade will out perform a folder every time.

I primarily buy fixed blades and it stuns me how much folder people will pay for fidget factor on what is essentially other than compactness an inferior tool - less for more is not a good game plan
Seems the rich dudes with expendable incomes are into flippy man jewelry. I don’t think they actually use their knives.
I never understood the “fidget factor” as well, but to each his own. I’m more of a folder guy since fixed blades aren’t really practical for my EDC needs most of the time (with the exception of the Izula). For light to medium tasks, quality folders can be absolute gems. The Para 3 and Code 4 come to mind.
The more knives grow in popularity, even if as only pocket jewelry, then it helps the industry as a whole. Which means more knife choices for everyone. Basically, the more the merrier

Spyderco was my favorite knife company , but after the last price increases on already expensive knives , plus the extra $25 - $35 I have to spend on a decent clip , I haven't bought a Spyderco in about 2 years , they should be looking at making or improving a budget line of knives with some decent steels that aren't 8cr13mov..

Have to agree with you on the Spyderco prices. It’s getting ridiculous for such simple designs. And the sprint runs have to stop; just make what we want and as many as we want. The sprints (for all makers) are just an artifice to create high demand/low supply and jack up prices.
They should be closer to Cold Steel prices
sheffieldsg I honestly don’t know how Cold Steel does it. A sub-100 to 150 dollar knife with S35VN steel, great ergonomics, decent fit and finish, solid insane lockup and impeccable blade centering, and a crazy sharp factory edge. Very little I could complain about with my Recon 1 and AK-47.
Still love the Spydercos, though I agree that the prices are starting to overheat the justification machine. It’s difficult to pick the 200 dollar Shaman when the American Lawman in S35VN is roughly less than half the price of that.
Well, I do not support Cold Steel for fundamental reasons. But I can point out that LA Police Gear sells an S35VN knife for $35. It’s not the best workmanship or fit and finish, but the materials quality is there. If they can still turn a profit, so can Spyderco, Benchmade, and all the makers who like to do sprint runs.

I agree with your recommendation of Robert Erickson as a custom maker. I have 2 excellent Vanax SC fillet knives from him and a Vanax SC Bird and Trout knife on order. Very high quality for a reasonable price. 👍 👍

Over the last few years that price creep has caused me to “panic buy” knives on my wishlist at the end of the year knowing they’re going to jump again in January or February. And if you think administering ear medicine to dogs is tough, try it with cats. Nearly always ends in blood and tears. 😂

The Leatherman Free T4 is getting a bad rap imho. It is a good alternative/competitor to the 85mm Wenger or 91mm Vic Swiss Army Knives with the added bonus of being one hand operable if needed. I like it enough to now include it in my rotation along with the Vic Compact/Handyman and Wenger S18. It's my go-to when I plan to be a bit rough with my pocket tool as it seems to be a bit more robust. I fully agree with the general thoughts on the P and K series though. Not sure what they were going for but I don't think they accomplished it.
I like my P2, don't really use the pliers for much more than pulling stuff out of the machines at work or undoing a screw real quick. I do wish there was a different selection of tools though and I don't like a few sharp parts on the handle. Which other leatherman has the knife on the outside and replaceable cutting jaws?

The Leatherman Free series with the magnetic one hand features is very enticing I particularly would love to get a hold of a K2 but not willing to pay $80 U.S. for what it is and the materials. Under $60 would be more appropriate. The steel used in multi-tools is under par with the market these day's. They need to catch up and start usingthe tougher tool steels like D2, A2, O1, 3V, or M4.

I use a simple surefire titan, i never end up taking a dedicated pocket torch with me. This one just rolls on my keyring and has been utterly indestructible.

Spyderco is increasing MAP again this year, i really love them but its very hard to keep buying them with these prices when the Chinese and others are pumping out so many good value products.

I have had 3 condor terrasaur's thay where all crap,uneven grind's poor edge retention and poor finishing. Now i just use my realsteel bushcraft 3 its super sharp and i never needed to put it on a stone just strop it and it stays hairsplitting sharp.
