I told my bestie the other day about this artist I've been following who is helping me let go of the tight realism I cling to by default. That I haven't created a "final" work for months and am having so much fun just experimenting and letting go of perfection. She noticed that I've been braver with friendships and letting people into my heart. And I realized that I'm learning something more from you than art. You are a walking, talking lesson in vulnerability. Not just vulnerability as an artist. Vulnerability of spirit. And I need that. We all do. So thank you for your content. For your open heart. And for your genuine vulnerability. Love.
I don’t paint like this. Ever. But because of Sandi, I bought oil pastels and soft pastels and I’ve even begun using my nupastels. And today I did one of her owls quick w nupastels. When I can’t think and am in a mental block or even an artist block, I look and look for inspiration elsewhere and ultimately end up w her videos going because they encourage me so much just to DO THE WORK!!
SANDI! SANDI! I just finished a painting I LOVE! I mean, I love it. And then the next one. I feel you have given me permission to like my own work. Really like it. I'm 69 , been a long time coming.
I said it before and I'll say it again, I could sit and watch you paint for HOURS!! Thank you for sharing the whole process of painting the hawks. LOVED every second. You're always a bright light to end the week. (And that quilt!? OHHHHHH SNAP!! The fabric on the back is everything!)
The way you approach you daily joy is so inspirational. The quilt and the sharing of your gift is truly one of Gods blessings of fellowship. Blessings Ms Sandi
That quilt….what a gift of LOVE! I’ve made several little lap quilts so I can appreciate how much time went into creating that. yes! Be sure to use it….a worn quilt is a most beautiful quilt! I live near a large Mennonite community up here in Ontario, Canada and I see many, many quilts….the best ones are the worn ones cause they tell such a story of function, creativity, love and warmth.
Hi Sandi, just wanted to take the time to comment and say I think every time I see one of your birds my heart skips a beat. They're my favourite things of yours. Keep up the good work!
@@sandihester Also came across this ua-cam.com/video/HyU7acPTtu0/v-deo.html The narration is torture, but history on Porter, photos, and pics of paintings are fascinating.
Wonderful video, as always! Watching your video every Friday is one of the highlights of my week! I discovered your channel while pregnant last year. It was a hard pregnancy mentally and physically. I watched all your videos and it bolstered my spirits. Now I watch it with my baby. I tell her "Let's watch Sandi! We love Sandi!". Thank you for sharing your art and your sweet spirit with us!
Those hawks really delight me. That first dab of blue on the second one and POP, he came alive! And then you go at it with the colored pencils, wow. I love your sketchbook work!!!! I've told my husband I'm saving up to purchase an original. I explained how I felt about investing in you. Now it will take some time to save up but I'm determined. Love you Sandi ❤
That quilt, wow! My mom was a master quilter, it’s an incredible art form and a beautiful legacy. And a true “labor of love” cuz the beginning is exciting and the end is so gratifying, but the middle is big and unwieldy and feels like it will never end!
Love your owl drawings/paintings. It was fun watching you do the two large ones…even though you don’t’ really like to paint on camera. Watching you made them seem less intimidating to try. I like that you’re showing us something different in your “talent pool”. Awhile back I remember that you did a series of African American people that were stunning. I think I speak for all of us….we love to watch you paint.
Hi Sandi, I love watching you paint! I really liked the owls and your process. That was so fun to watch. Paint shapes and no attention to details, no thinking, I have to try that and see what happens. That quilt was beautiful! It is an art, one that I would never attempt. I admire and appreciate an artist that can make such beautiful blankets by hand. I find it amazing. Great video!!!
Sandi, thank you for showing us your process and sharing your journey. You are so dedicated to your work and it shows! Your heart comes across through your paintings. It’s a great mystery how God does this, but He is shining through you. 👏👏👏👏🧡☀️🐝
There’s something I would suggest that I picked up from Sandi. Paint a piece of paper (any size) black and as soon as it’s dry hit it with COLORS. Personally I use oil pastel but any medium is good. Doesn’t matter the subject, meaning, or style you’d be pressed to not have fun. It takes away preciousness and has a stark wham bam to it to really kick things off or fill in that expensive sketchbook you’re so scared of.
Thank you so much for just being you and for sharing 'you' with the rest of the world! Watching your videos just brings me back to myself,to the essence of who I am,to 'home'.You bring my passion for painting and creating to the surface again,so i just want to get all my materials out and just create for the enjoyment of creating, which is what it is all about essentially! thank you! :)
This video was so beautiful and funny! I love the sketches and just slapping the paint on! The owls and birds are so sweet. I love love the quilt wow! the quilt is so stunningly beautiful! Oh I really love the depth you are getting in the water of the lake painting, love the blues in there. Thanks for sharing Sandi, I could have watched way more!

There's so much joy in this! Great video for artists who are hesitant to use paint generously. What's your tip for keeping painted pages from sticking together in sketchbooks? (Your studio looks absolutely charming BTW! )
Now I want to try painting birds! Though, as you mentioned in one of your old videos, as a beginner I paint me some FAT birds. 🤣🤣🤣 Miss Sandi, I love these videos so much. They are such an encouragement. But what's more encouraging is how you deal with what some people call "haters." Recently, I had the experience of people giving me "the look" over my sketches. Wonderful video! I can appreciate what a treat it is to get that gorgeous quilt from your sweet friend. To get a quilt is truly a gift of love. Making a quilt is no easy feat. I know from experience because I’m a quilter too:) It was pure joy watching you paint your birds this week Sandi. I love how you share your thoughts with your viewers as you grab your different paints and pencils to create your little masterpieces. So much fun!💝
Sandi...Love those owls you did. They are fabulous! I especially like the first one you did...the dark orange one. He is just something! The character you gave his face and then his kind of old guy posture. But the other one across the page was also wonderful! And then your smaller ones...just fab. 👍You said you've "...never been very good at owls?". What? I think you captured them spot on! It just amazes me how you get the lines, the contours, the edges, so well and very often with a cheapo brush! Amazing! And how lucky you are to have such a great and really special friend and then to exchange each other's creations. And that quilt really is special, but then so is your painting! 🙏🏼. Thanks for sharing all this with us. 🙏🏼
Oh my gosh so much to comment on! Love the bird warm up...I agree the guy on the left looks like an old man.. I mean bird! Sandi that quilt is so beautiful! Your friend is very talented! Okay I am only part way through...lol
LOVED your lake paintings particularly the small one. Like your humor in seeing the old man hawk painting and making the second bird less fat. You just go with whatever happens. A great gift to culivate
That’s nice you got a handmade quilt. I have made those too and my sister used to confiscate them 😂 They are a bucket load of work… and yes, it does take creative energy to make them… designing then choosing and arranging colors. So many fabrics I used to get overwhelmed. I have two boxes of fabric pieces in the garage that are twenty years old… a gold mine for a scrappy quilt.
I feel like the music at the end was “Oh the overwhelming never ending reckless love of God” ❤️So perfect. And if it wasn’t then that was just Him blowing me kisses because it encouraged me!
I was so into your owls and then suddenly the video ended. Didn't feel like 27 min at all! Love your old man hawk and the falcon turned into a stately gentleman when you slimmed him up. Before he looked a bit old mannish too 😂 Everytime I see you paint I feel like I can do that too. You keep inspiring me Sandi, every video 🥰
Loved the quilt! She is a talented textile/fabric artist. Your paintings in canvas have lovely texture and movement. And I love the sketchbooks. Your birds are one of my favorites that you do. ❤️.
As a quilter myself I have made hundreds of quilts for others and my greatest joy is when I find out they are using the quilt 20+ years later. Please honor your dear friend’s gift to you by using, loving, snuggling that beautiful quilt. In my opinion, if you don’t use the quilt, that would be the same as you gifting a painting and having the recipient put it away in a cupboard for no one to look at and enjoy.

Thank you for the video. The old looking bird is so funny. This quilt is amazing an it is definitely a big piece of handcrafted art. It tooks hours and hours to create such a beautiful piece. Good deal and compliments to your friend!
Thank you for another inspiring and fun video - you always send me off to do some art, today I drew a black crane with those wonderful Inktense pencils. This week early one morning in our urban garden we had a surprise visit from a sparrowhawk who flew off with one of this year’s young blackbirds. Sad, but bird life. Diana
great video! I really enjoy the birds (read animals). I hadn't thought to do a double page of various animals, which is strange, as i often sit w/ the tv going and sketch groups of 3 of whatever. Beautiful quilt, aren't you the lucky one with such a friend. Was happy to hear Cooper visiting the studio. Do give him extra pats, so he knows we are thinking of him. ty
Aaah those lake paintings are stunning! Would love to hear about how you build up layers and get all that yummy texture on your paintings! Love your work Sandi! 💛
I adore that super colorful owl (elf?) from the sketchbook spread! He is so festive and unique, and second only to your buzzard-hunchy hawk who I also found so adorable as well! Great episode, Sandi!
I have to say it again, you are such a huge inspiration (my Sandspiration you know 😁) I have never been a huge bird fan (I'm actually scared of them 🙈) But now I have two bird books I can use as reference, to learn how to draw/paint birds 😄 When you paint birds, you make it look so easy. And they turn out so amazing 😍 And that quilt! So beautiful 😍 So so special to have something made by a dear friend!
As always hearing and seeing your process is inspiring. I bought a big sized sketchbook months ago, inspired by your sketchbooks. It’s still in my drawer. 🙄 Perhaps I’ll dare to fill in that blank page!
I was painting my owls too as you were going along. Mine look more like birds. Lol!!! But it was definitely great practice. Very fast and not giving much thought. I love the beautiful quilt from your friend. So talented. ❤ Your paintings are looking awesome of the lake. 🙂
Hi Sandi - your birds are so cute! What fun. I would like to have more fun with painting now after watching you create really cute and colourful birds; they are alive!
The warm up birds have such personality! They might need some names! Your self talk and sharing your process is so helpful and inspiring to me as a new artist. More classes coming??? Thank you Sandi
Great video! Thanks for the encouragement to take a subject you really like and use that for your warm-up. That idea is one that can work, for me, better than just going and playing. That quilt is amazing, too!

Hey Blick! I stick glassine or wax paper between pages that I think will stick but I also try to mainly use matte paint and that does the trick too

I adore that super colorful owl (elf?) from the sketchbook spread! He is so festive and unique, and second only to your buzzard-hunchy hawk who I also found so adorable as well! Great episode, Sandi!
I like that name hunchy hawk!!!
You are golden. A fabulous inspiration for me. I appreciate your Sandi style so much!
❤️❤️❤️
Loved your bird sketches . You inspire me .
Thank you Trudy!
Ugh! I love your birdies so much! You inspire me so much to be looser and less concerned with perfection!
Thank you 🥰
I have to say it again, you are such a huge inspiration (my Sandspiration you know 😁) I have never been a huge bird fan (I'm actually scared of them 🙈) But now I have two bird books I can use as reference, to learn how to draw/paint birds 😄 When you paint birds, you make it look so easy. And they turn out so amazing 😍 And that quilt! So beautiful 😍 So so special to have something made by a dear friend!
it probably just looks easy because I've been painting them since I started doing art. I probably should be better at them actually :)
As always hearing and seeing your process is inspiring. I bought a big sized sketchbook months ago, inspired by your sketchbooks. It’s still in my drawer. 🙄 Perhaps I’ll dare to fill in that blank page!
JULIE! get those sketchbooks out girl!
Hi Julie! I'll paint in mine, if you paint in yours!! I did the same thing lol! It finally is on my table😅
@@bella619 deal!

Thank you Susan!
I was painting my owls too as you were going along. Mine look more like birds. Lol!!! But it was definitely great practice. Very fast and not giving much thought. I love the beautiful quilt from your friend. So talented. ❤ Your paintings are looking awesome of the lake. 🙂
Owls are hard for some reason!
It was really nice to see your friendship Jennifer Jones its so encouraging. Also I loved the bird sketches. x
Hi Sandi - your birds are so cute! What fun. I would like to have more fun with painting now after watching you create really cute and colourful birds; they are alive!

Great video! Thanks for the encouragement to take a subject you really like and use that for your warm-up. That idea is one that can work, for me, better than just going and playing. That quilt is amazing, too!
