This is my favorite of all your videos. I had a boy in one of my classes a few years back whose parents were not doing well together and they had an older child who had mental health issues so this boy got very little attention (he's a teen now and the parents divorced, and the older brother is doing better, things are good). One day, I mentioned to him that I could see how much he loved the color blue. He just melted in his seat. Someone was noticing. He and I really bonded over that. Sometimes you don't know how much good you can do just noticing something special.

I’m a firm believer that creating is in our DNA. Letting your kids get dirty, okay and find their niche and finding joy in the process is the point! Good advice here. ❤️
My Great Aunt was the one who didn't try to extinguish my artistic side. Although she steered it away from drawing on walls. My parents were anti 'professional' artist. But In the end, at 47, I finally have failed at parents expectations and can start doing my Happy Work!
Wish you had been my art teacher, when I was in high school. My parents never responded when I showed them my art. Guess that's why I tend to be too self critical.
Your videos keep getting better, and better! I've learned so much from watching them. I carry a travelers sketchbook when we take off for the day, and I do like you, just sketch real simple images, then go home, and do a more detailed sketch of the image. Then I hope to put them all together in a painting. I'm trying to stop overthinking, and just do. Keep making your videos!

Great advice! Yesterday my 4 year old painted a beautiful picture of herself (instead of fingers each finger Was a paintbrush or marker), a family portrait, a sunset and finally, a few squiggles and lines that I had no idea what they represented but she said 'those are kids running around at the park'. When asked which of the four we should laminate and hang up, without hesitation, she picked the couple of lines and squiggles. I was JUST about to say 'really?? Don't you prefer the portraits? - note, i started off as a portrait artist myself, been painting portraits since I was her age'... But I bit my tongue and thought about the reaction others often have at my abstracts (negative reactions whereas I LOVE them) and I said 'ok!' instead. A big lesson for me
Loving all your still life pictures, loved the colours and the mix of patterns. Also liked the landscape with the blue trees. I’ve always loved wonky trees and thought I was crazy wanting to paint them until I saw Emily Carr’s painting of trees and said hey, I’m not crazy. My grandsons love my art room and we have so much fun. I agree with you with regards to perfectionism, they are so free and relaxed about their art. I do find though that the seven year old is starting to get more self-critical, but I show him my fails to help him feel ok with imperfection. Thank you. 🙋🏼♀️🌻🇨🇦
As a perfectionist, I think it's important to make a difference between this being a negative force (as in "my work is terrible and I'll never be good") and a positive force ("ok, this is not bad, I like it, but I see some mistakes and next time I'll improve on those") We don't all enjoy working loose like you do. And I think it's important to let room for people to explore how they enjoy creating art, be it loose and expressive or tight and precise. On a side note, you're a good companion when I work these days ^^
I totally ageee that painting loose is not the goal for everyone- the only goal o really want to encourage is enjoying the making process for people no matter what their style is.

Love Fridays!! Watching you and Grady is so much fun. My husband, Terry, and I were arguing (we're like Frank and Marie Barone from Everybody Loves Raymond), so you can imagine. We yell, not really talk and then a few moments later, laugh with my bumping him or something. He's Irish/Scottish and I'm a Texas latina, so we can get pretty fired up. I think God laughed when He put us together and is constantly entertained. Anyway, before bumping him, I commented when you and Grady are together in the car and I mention, "Wow. a married couple that get along." I was accused of not letting it go. lol Of course not! Moving on: I like how you go back to your paintings and add and take away, change this or that. I'm thinking about doing the same thing with some of my folk art inspired paintings. My problem is that I don't always know when to quit. Then, I go in with a black ink pen and my white gel pen and end up overdoing it. At first, it looks like accenting and then It's frustrating. Will I have a bunch of junk paintings before I know when to quit (unlike my arguing with my hubby lol). Thank you, thank you for your cool words.
Some wonderful advice. I might show this to some of my parents. I've had one mum criticise paintings where her daughter painted a panda pink and purple. I thought it was wonderful, but her mum made her re-do it in the 'proper' colours. Definitely stole her daughter's joy.
I appreciate the talk about criticism. I realized that the learning process was tough for me. I paint what I see in my mind, that's how I was introduced to art. I just took paint in a notebook and whatever came to me I did. But, I realized I lacked skills to be able to portray what I had in my mind to the substrate. That was TOUGH! Tough because I wasn't happy with the outcome because it wasn't what I saw. So, the process of letting go of trying to paint perfectly what was in my mind and the process of learning from teachers to gather skills as tools to call to when painting. That is a year now since I started learning. I feel much comfortable with where I am and less critical. But it was hard to accept the learning stage and having patience with my skill level. 💜

I love your advice about the family and friends saying how great ALL my art is... lol(yes that happens to me also) but I'm lucky that my hubby is probably the only one that gives me true critical advice on my art. I wanted to share with you some great news in my life-i was offered a job at a nursing home as an art teacher! In so honored. They came to my house to see my art and my studio, and they were impressed! I am a little nervous, but I feel like I would be great at showing older people art but my nervous side may win! 😆🤣lol I use to teach art in a day care center, but it's been awhile. I'm so excited-i just wanted to share it with everyone! 🥰🥰🤗🤗💚💙
If we all had your fascinating confidence and belief in our abilities and knowledge that you have, how wonderful would that be. I love that you channel your inner child and just have fun experimenting with art materials, whilst having fun. Children rarely take themselves seriously and usually lose themselves in their art, which is hard for adults to do. University training does artists gain validation for their years of study, but I do wonder whether they also get lost in the technical side of art and lose their child along the way. Interesting.
This was such a fresh take on everything. I enjoy your videos so much, they always cheer me up. 🤩✨ Gotta say that I agree with making the right questions. I draw and paint a lot with my bedridden grandma, she has dementia and art is literally one of the activities she enjoys the most (it’s pretty therapeutic as well). Throughout the years, I’ve learned to make the right questions and her results are always inspiring. Sometimes she also gives me feedback on my work 💕
Excellent advice Sandi…thanks! For many years I taught art in an elementary school ….it’s a tough thing because I always hated having to assign a grade to someone’s creative work! I think this is one way that kids grow into adults who think they can’t make art 🙁 In my classes students could always get a good grade if they had a positive attitude, followed the main point/lesson (but were always encouraged to personalize and add to the lesson goals) and treated the materials with respect (ie. no unnecessary damage!).
I would love you as an art teacher! My husband is also colourblind. It was first suspected when he painted the sky purple instead of blue at school. (Which is quite amusing after you saying about pink grass…I’m surprised the teacher didn’t just think he was being artistic rather than picking up on the colourblindness 😆)

Thank you Sandi for another great video. And yes, please talk to your children in a loving way, It's vital. The negative that I received from comments about my art, when I was a child held me back for a long time. Do it with kindness like Sandi said. It will make a big difference in there development and have no hang-ups when they grow up. Do everything in love.
I wanted to thank you for the advice about what not to ask your partner. Mine has very similar reactions to Grady’s. I had always approached him in a similar manner as my students with limited success and I believe much torture on his part. I will give the does anything stand out to you a try. I know that he has a decent eye. He just doesn’t have the language or comfort level to put into words what he sees and then thinks about it. It would be so nice to be able to have more of a conversation about my work. Thanks for the video Sandi. Oh and the more abstracted creek paintings seem to be a shift in your work. Just an observation:)
Oooh if the hub is color blind, he’s probably GREAT with value checking! And I totally relate to parents not understanding because my folks are NOT artistic or creative *at all*. It’s not their fault, but it was disappointing when I drew or painted something amazing for my age range, and got very little positive reinforcement. It was super sad for me as a child, but as an adult, I understand that they had no relationship to art or aesthetics. It’s beautiful and amazing that you help your friends when they don’t “get it” because kids are amazing creatives! Not being weird, but…I already loved you for your excitement, passion, and creative spirit, but I love you even more now for how you’ve explained this difficult topic. Young artists are so very special - untainted and unjaded by the world - so many work at stifling their creative explorations - or but it even applies to free spirits of all ages who refuse to be unjaded!

really appreciate your advice on how to ask for and give feedback on art! it made me reflect on how i never ask for feedback because i think i would be crushed by it if it was bad (and i assume it will be), and like you said, the always positive, "it's great" kinds of comments just don't help any. what you said made me reconsider, so thank you.
Great video! I just have three things I want to mention: I love your floors in your house!!! Gorgeous! Also, as I watched you watercolor I noticed that you painted it much like you do your acrylics. The brush was very well worked. I am so precious with my brushes I could never use them as you did because it would ruin them. 😄 I would have to buy special cheap brushes for that type of painting. And I also just love your comments at the end. Especially about teaching and complimenting children. What an amazing teacher you must be!! Loved your thoughts...it got me to thinking about pieces I've created that are my favorite and the ones that arent... and what I realized was my favorite ones were the outcome of a really enjoyable process. Times when I had time to get "lost" in the process where I let go of trying to "create" and just created. If that makes sense. 🤔☺️ I stopped "trying" ..to create.
Also, I love how "above the farm" turned out! It's gorgeous. Just the way I like to paint. Loose and free. I look forward to you teaching more workshops.
I love your insights on art and especially this video on who to ask for thoughts on our art from our loved ones. I used to ask my Mom all the time, but she passed 5 years ago. Now that I take care of my Dad I want to involve him, but he doesn’t really know what to say. I also wanted to say that I love all the color in your house.

I needed this. I've a degree in Art. But I became an Executive Assistant. Bleh. I was diagnosed with MS and have been forced into early retirement as my body has violent spasms. I think the best I csn do now is A messy Pollock style drop clothe.. I've been moping and crying 😢.

I love the sketch at the beginning of the video of the landscape and creek, the colors, the movement, the composition it all goes so well. And watching you paint with the long handled brush is awesome with the amount of control you have when holding the brush further back on the handle. You can tell you have been painting for a while because you seem so confident in you marks and where you place them. It fun to watch.

Sandi, I really loved the look of the stream with rocks and blue trees. That made the stream and all the activity going on in it more prominent in my opinion.
One of my favorite books to read to budding preschool artists is by Eric Carl. The Artist who Painted a Blue Horse. This gives kids the permission to paint things any color they like. I loved your criticism analysis and ways to help.
So two things. First, I discovered that I had not seen the announcement about your spring workshop. I watched the video last night quite by accident, and have no recollection of it seeing it prior. So I dutifully followed the link to register, and it was sold out! I said "Yay Sandi!!!" before I said "awe shucks." How's that for supportive?! Lol. I feel confident there will be future opportunities🤞 Second, I grew up with a perfectionist Father, and I still hear his voice a lot. His motto seemed to be don't bother doing it if you're not going to do it 'right.' Thank you SO much for encouraging all of us to get that "stinkin' thinkin' "gone! This video was great, especially the tips about talking to children about their art!! With my daughter who is 6 if she's drawn/painted/coloured in something I'll been couraging but if it's gone a little wrong I'll ask her about it, we will chat but I won't say ewww what is it, that's wrong. I'll say to her she's done well but if she want's to know how to draw it out better I'll help her!! Some of the things she's drawn I've honestly had no idea but I don't want to squash her happiness about it!! I don't give her positivity all the time if it's not great, I'll make sure we talk about it then we work on it together the next day, I've used the 'talk to me about what this is!?' I'll have her tell me about it, making sure it's positive but help her to see where it might of gone wrong but tell her/show her how it's meant to go but she had a good go at it!! She has a big smile when I say we can work on it the next day!! I thought I was being a bit miserable when I say that I don't get it or something's gone a little wrong!! Happy to know I'm not :) I do love her colour work....it's better than mine at times, lol!!

That is a year now since I started learning. I feel much comfortable with where I am and less critical. But it was hard to accept the learning stage and having patience with my skill level. 💜

I wanted to share with you some great news in my life-i was offered a job at a nursing home as an art teacher! In so honored. They came to my house to see my art and my studio, and they were impressed! I am a little nervous, but I feel like I would be great at showing older people art but my nervous side may win! 😆🤣lol I use to teach art in a day care center, but it's been awhile. I'm so excited-i just wanted to share it with everyone! 🥰🥰🤗🤗💚💙

If we all had your fascinating confidence and belief in our abilities and knowledge that you have, how wonderful would that be. I love that you channel your inner child and just have fun experimenting with art materials, whilst having fun. Children rarely take themselves seriously and usually lose themselves in their art, which is hard for adults to do. University training does artists gain validation for their years of study, but I do wonder whether they also get lost in the technical side of art and lose their child along the way. Interesting.

This was such a fresh take on everything. I enjoy your videos so much, they always cheer me up. 🤩✨ Gotta say that I agree with making the right questions. I draw and paint a lot with my bedridden grandma, she has dementia and art is literally one of the activities she enjoys the most (it’s pretty therapeutic as well). Throughout the years, I’ve learned to make the right questions and her results are always inspiring. Sometimes she also gives me feedback on my work 💕

Excellent advice Sandi…thanks! For many years I taught art in an elementary school ….it’s a tough thing because I always hated having to assign a grade to someone’s creative work! I think this is one way that kids grow into adults who think they can’t make art 🙁 In my classes students could always get a good grade if they had a positive attitude, followed the main point/lesson (but were always encouraged to personalize and add to the lesson goals) and treated the materials with respect (ie. no unnecessary damage!).
Oh man - that would be hard to grade art! Eek! Sounds like you had a great plan for that though!

I would love you as an art teacher! My husband is also colourblind. It was first suspected when he painted the sky purple instead of blue at school. (Which is quite amusing after you saying about pink grass…I’m surprised the teacher didn’t just think he was being artistic rather than picking up on the colourblindness 😆)

The negative that I received from comments about my art, when I was a child held me back for a long time. Do it with kindness like Sandi said. It will make a big difference in there development and have no hang-ups when they grow up. Do everything in love.

I wanted to thank you for the advice about what not to ask your partner. Mine has very similar reactions to Grady’s. I had always approached him in a similar manner as my students with limited success and I believe much torture on his part. I will give the does anything stand out to you a try. I know that he has a decent eye. He just doesn’t have the language or comfort level to put into words what he sees and then thinks about it. It would be so nice to be able to have more of a conversation about my work. Thanks for the video Sandi. Oh and the more abstracted creek paintings seem to be a shift in your work. Just an observation:)

Oooh if the hub is color blind, he’s probably GREAT with value checking! And I totally relate to parents not understanding because my folks are NOT artistic or creative *at all*. It’s not their fault, but it was disappointing when I drew or painted something amazing for my age range, and got very little positive reinforcement. It was super sad for me as a child, but as an adult, I understand that they had no relationship to art or aesthetics. It’s beautiful and amazing that you help your friends when they don’t “get it” because kids are amazing creatives! Not being weird, but…I already loved you for your excitement, passion, and creative spirit, but I love you even more now for how you’ve explained this difficult topic. Young artists are so very special - untainted and unjaded by the world - so many work at stifling their creative explorations - or but it even applies to free spirits of all ages who refuse to be unjaded!

really appreciate your advice on how to ask for and give feedback on art! it made me reflect on how i never ask for feedback because i think i would be crushed by it if it was bad (and i assume it will be), and like you said, the always positive, "it's great" kinds of comments just don't help any. what you said made me reconsider, so thank you.

Also, as I watched you watercolor I noticed that you painted it much like you do your acrylics. The brush was very well worked. I am so precious with my brushes I could never use them as you did because it would ruin them. 😄 I would have to buy special cheap brushes for that type of painting.
And I also just love your comments at the end. Especially about teaching and complimenting children. What an amazing teacher you must be!! I wish I could send my grandkids for lessons from you! 😄💗

Loved your thoughts...it got me to thinking about pieces I've created that are my favorite and the ones that arent... and what I realized was my favorite ones were the outcome of a really enjoyable process. Times when I had time to get "lost" in the process where I let go of trying to "create" and just created. If that makes sense. 🤔☺️
I stopped "trying" ..to create.
Also, I love how "above the farm" turned out! It's gorgeous. Just the way I like to paint. Loose and free. I look forward to you teaching more workshops.

Now that I take care of my Dad I want to involve him, but he doesn’t really know what to say. I also wanted to say that I love all the color in your house.

I needed this. I've a degree in Art. But I became an Executive Assistant. Bleh. I was diagnosed with MS and have been forced into early retirement as my body has violent spasms. I think the best I csn do now is A messy Pollock style drop clothe.. I've been moping and crying 😢.

I love the sketch at the beginning of the video of the landscape and creek, the colors, the movement, the composition it all goes so well. And watching you paint with the long handled brush is awesome with the amount of control you have when holding the brush further back on the handle. You can tell you have been painting for a while because you seem so confident in you marks and where you place them. It fun to watch.

One of my favorite books to read to budding preschool artists is by Eric Carl. The Artist who Painted a Blue Horse. This gives kids the permission to paint things any color they like. I loved your criticism analysis and ways to help.
So two things. First, I discovered that I had not seen the announcement about your spring workshop. I watched the video last night quite by accident, and have no recollection of it seeing it prior. So I dutifully followed the link to register, and it was sold out! I said "Yay Sandi!!!" before I said "awe shucks." How's that for supportive?! Lol. I feel confident there will be future opportunities🤞 Second, I grew up with a perfectionist Father, and I still hear his voice a lot. His motto seemed to be don't bother doing it if you're not going to do it 'right.' Thank you SO much for encouraging all of us to get that "stinkin' thinkin' "gone! That's what I love most about you and your channel and your art..."it's just paper, it's just paint...relax and enjoy" 😻❤👩🎨

This video was great, especially the tips about talking to children about their art!! With my daughter who is 6 if she's drawn/painted/coloured in something I'll been couraging but if it's gone a little wrong I'll ask her about it, we will chat but I won't say ewww what is it, that's wrong. I'll say to her she's done well but if she want's to know how to draw it out better I'll help her!! Some of the things she's drawn I've honestly had no idea but I don't want to squash her happiness about it!! I don't give her positivity all the time if it's not great, I'll make sure we talk about it then we work on it together the next day, I've used the 'talk to me about what this is!?' I'll have her tell me about it, making sure it's positive but help her to see where it might of gone wrong but tell her/show her how it's meant to go but she had a good go at it!! She has a big smile when I say we can work on it the next day!! I thought I was being a bit miserable when I say that I don't get it or something's gone a little wrong!! Happy to know I'm not :) I do love her colour work....it's better than mine at times, lol!!

This is such useful information for giving feedback to kids (my nieces are teenagers now so it’s too late for them, but many of my friends have toddlers/early years children so they often bring home a ‘err what is that?’ Creation so now I know what to say!)

Hi Sandi, for 'cream' pages I wonder if Liquitex acrylic Gouache ( I love that stuff) Unbleached Tirianium, would be great to use as a straight out the bottle mix? As soon as you said it my eyes immediately went to the bottle sat on my desk. I think I will give it a go myself as I get put off by a bright white page sometimes.
