Another regression.
1) no sapphire lens cover
2)no headphone jack
3)worse audio quality
4)no faster charging solution after three generations(2 hrs and 46 mins with the included wall adapter)
5)processor hissing noise under load.
6) 2012 screen resolution on 2016 $700 smartphone.
7) no split screen multi tasking on the 7 plus (really?)
8) apples solution to wireless headphones, shoddy white wireless earpods that most people have expressed don't fit into their ears and now you remove the cord.
9)isolated exploding incidents.
Did you buy the phone?
No blowing up too, u forgot that
Yeah, you're right, who cares for the better cameras, battery, processors, stereo speakers, water and dust resistant, new colors and materials, it sucks
there's sapphire tho
+Vitor Mikaelson can you tell me where ?
amazing review that I doubt anyone of the "tech reviewers" have touched upon till date. Everybody talks of inconvenience or courage but nobody covers the technicals as good as Juan does! #PocketnowFTW
:-)
Very informative, thanks. No surprises that audio quality is actually somewhat worse. The 3.5mm headphone Jack has survived for a hundred years because it's a great piece of technology, and is still the professional standard.
I actually cut a section talking about the professional angle. I doubt I'll ever walk into a recording studio and see a headphone mixer with Lightning ports LOL.
+maplelander we don't even know if VR is gonna take off. Or if Apple will make their own VR headset. Even if they do, it'll probably only work with their own devices.
Hariz Nonis Yes their increasingly restricted ecosystem is what frustrates me most. They removed the headphone Jack in favor of wireless and their lightning headphones, yet their lightning headphones only work with their idevices. It is completely just a licensing thing, why not just use usb c which is universal?
***** It's obviously too late for Apple to do it now. But my point was why did they digress form universal standards anyway - why didn't they just go with USB c in the first place when it was clear that that would be the standard? The reason is licensing, they get a nice fee for their proprietary cord. They're obviously a big enough company to do that, but imo it's frustrating that you get locked into their system and buy products that only work with their devices. Just my opinion of course.
Maplelander, Apple developed USB C. It's not the craziest idea (switching to USB C from Lightning). What did Apple just do with the iPhone 7? They ditched the 3.5mm auxillary jack which is far more ubiquitous than Lightning. USB C is better than Lightning in almost every way and oh yeah--it's universal. Because Apple chose a proprietary standard that would pad their pocketbooks and further lock people into the Apple ecosystem, no new audio standard will emerge. Android and PC will either stick with the auxiliary jack or go USB C, and Apple will have Lightning in its corner of the market. An all wireless world is at least 5 years away due to limitations wth battery and Bluetooth technology.
I'm switching to a Galaxy s7 at the end of October because of this one change. I'm sure I'm not the only one.
Wow your so brave and daring.
it's a great phone
What a crybaby pussy
Samsung has a lot of the same shitty business practices that Apple does (ie they don't give updates, lock the bootloader, and it is rumored the S8 WILL ALSO ditch the jack) Get a Nexus or a One Plus 3 since with those, you won't be left out to dry with updates in a year and there are a lot of cool Roms on XDA.
The thing is that every phone manufacturer who ditches the headphone jack would use the USB-C connector. That thing is universal, cheap and is not owned by any phone company. The USB-C cables, splitters and adapters are 1-5$ and not 10-200$. Also, the USB-C headphones are much cheaper than the lightning ones because companies are not forced to give money to Apple.
Some fanboy on another video told me that I should upgrade my car so that I can listen to music while charging. Insane.
They have issues. Such thinking shouldn't evolve for mankind's benefit.
bruh HAHAHAHA just get the bluetooth to aux device then you can use the iphone7
wow...
Harambe dicks out for you RIP man
Bluetooth sucks tho
Truth man, so glad you made this video
:-)
thank you for always reviewing audio quality which other reviewers don't. you are for me one of the best reviewer and always do quality reviews .. again, thanks a lot
Bots be like
Anyone who praises Apple for this move is an Isheep in the purest form.
Samsung is rumored to do the same.
Samsung is removing the audio jack as well next year in their s8. So it's going to be a norm.
Well then, screw samsung too.
degraded audio quality ? way to go Apple 😂😂😂.. Samsung already promote wireless earbuds. but they won't remove headphone jack unlike Apple
We still have no idea if Samsung is doing this. It's just a rumor
i feel smarter after watching this. nice vid!
And do you feel a bit of regret for pre-ordering it, Mark? ;P
And who said he pre-ordered it, David?
And who told you to stick up for him, Kadene?
still waiting for apple stores to restock so i can walk in
lol wait you still want that piece of junk ishit7?
Apple wants the world free of wires and cables.
Sends an extra adapter cable. :/
Mr. Panda The question is, why did they HAVE TO remove the headphone jack. No one has been able to find a good reason for that. Secondly, all tests prove that with their new adapter and technology, the sound quality has gone down.
And yeah, as for you and people like you. You would not complain even if they removed the display from their iPhones and sold it separately.
they remove it so they could put a bigger battery, the taptic engine and it becomes lighter.
AKA thats why, yeah we lose the aux BUT they upgrade the bluetooth to 4.2 which actually makes audio quality ALOT better if you have a new bluetooth headset. which aka what they are actually aiming for. they werent actually aiming it to music heads but technology
Blob Quang Ho Bro I don't have a problem with your liking of an iPhone. In most cases, it's your blind following of the brand that annoys the people who make fun of your choice.
Now, don't take me as your enemy or someone who is trying to make fun of you but open up your mind and read carefully. I am not trying to disrespect you here, but mentioning the facts.
The battery size on note 7 is 3500 mAh.
There is an S-pen INSERTED into the device.
Their phone is waterproof too.
Note 7 is 7.9mm thick whereas the iPhone 7 plus is 7.3. How much of a difference is that?
The thickness on Note 7 comes from the glass back panel actually. If you remove that glass backing, the phone might be just as thick as iPhone 7 plus or maybe less.
How were they able to fit in more things on their phone than Apple did on theirs in nearly the same thickness?
Now, let's take another approach to all of this.
You tell me honestly, wasn't your iPhone 6 a perfect fit in your hand? What plausible reason can you think of for making a phone even thinner? Hold iPhone 6 and 7 in your hands with the blindfolds on and tell me if you can feel the difference in their thickness.
You like a particular brand? Keep liking it. But at least criticize them for the stupid things they are doing. It's not like Apple is some super power that can never be wrong. Just like other companies they can make mistakes too. Samsung also realized its mistake when it removed the SD card option from its phones and then corrected it later on.
By the way, I am not even a Samsung fanboy. I am an LG fan. But you have to give credit where it's due.
There are definitely some reasonable points where I heavily criticize Samsung too. For example, why the hell Samsung's single core performance sucks so bad compared to Apple's single core performance. This is one area where Samsung will HAVE to do something.
Grateful? Be grateful that they removed a feature that every other phone has, that almost every person uses? What the fuck is there to be grateful about?
Yeah! Just be grateful Apple even let's us pay a 1000$ for their iPhone!
Wow, so they remove the headphone jack to give you two lesser quality options (Lightning and Bluetooth). That's amazing! A port that is over 100 years old is still better than newer options, yet Apple decided to remove it.
Courage.
@@SomeGadgetGuy Woke Courage.
Courage = Courage to ask for more $$$
thats it!! courage to try to rip off more without getting shut down!!
courage to downgrade 😂😂
im surprised the headphone adapter comes in the box and another will cost you only $9 !!
Ask?
Obviously not you, Apple is making more money in the long run because now headphone makers have to partner with Apple to make compatible headphones.
40$ the adapter for charging and listening music at the same time, 150$ wireless earpods, they didn't remove it by accident.
Neri Niccolò Dei
it's under a license, so yes they make a profit on it...
They include earpods that work without an adapter plus an adapter. This is not exactly Apple like but they took steps to minimize impacts from this change. Still haters are going to find a reason to hate.
You do not need the $40 adapter and you do not need to spend $150 on wireless earpods. If you were going to spend $150 on any headphones spending it on Apple earpods would be insane as they are not very good.
davva360
without the adaptater you can't charge and listen to music
(which is ironic on the phone with the worst battery)
Uryendel I haven't had an issue with battery life since the 6 came out.
I do think it would have been better if Apples adapter had allowed for charging at the same time but there is an adapter available if you really need to be able to do that.
Only time battery is really an issue for me is when using GPS and it is connected to bluetooth in my vehicle so I can still charge it. The lack of a headphone jack is not impactful to me.
Uryendel Not trying to be mean but i really wonder, how many of you and how often , in what situation you will need to listen and charge .
Unless in a car i can admit there are problems with charging and connectivity ... other than that ?
Are you suddenly all stoped using your tablets , laptops, tv's and stereos in home and standing near electrical outlets listening music in home ??
You did it again Juan! Video was on point.
:-)
Yes he did :) And he was :)
Finally someone who cares about audio quality in phones. It should be one of the priorities along side the screen, storage technology, CPU/GPU, connectivity, and battery life. All others are secondary.
you have nailed it pal.. it's just tool to make more money through accessories nothing else.!!
Bullshit if you watched the presentation it was removed to make space for the Taptic Engine so they completely seal off the home button. And if you watch water test videos it survives 30ft which the galaxy died in that depth. So it payed off waterproof wise plus you they also gave you options with an adaptor to continue using your old headphones. So it's a win win. Everyone is eventually going to move to Bluetooth but Apple isn't forcing you that's why they included an adaptor
Let apple be brave and make a car without a wheel to make room for water proofing and dont worry they will have an adapter so you can still use the wheel when you want your car to move...
You mean instead of making it slightly bigger? Are you saying this design change was made VERY LAST MINUTE? As in before the screen was designed and everything else. Fuck no. There's tonnes of space.
The jack being different causes a few issues. The first being that charge ports are often abused and using a headphone in there too will only shorten the life span further. Not everyone spends nearly that much a year on audio hardware. I've spent 30 on headphones in 1.5 years... Buying a nice pair of headphones and then hooking them up to a little dinky lightning adapter looks dumb and the best audio manufacturers are not going to make lighting headphones.
Not to mention that if you buy any lightning headphones you are fucked if you try to use any other device.
*****
That doesn't really mean that is the reason to remove the jack. Future for phone audio is likely wireless. That being said, wired headphones in 3.5mm aren't going anywhere.
as always the best tech videos on the internet
:-)
Indeed
true
Agree as well
Damn, you said it very well Juan, glad there is actualy a video explaining it well!
I add something:
everyone is only thinking of headphones with the hp jack, but forget that this port is far more useful than it,
you have many other stuff in the song department that use it, non bluetooth speakers, & for more particular ppl (that would probably never get any iPhone) many material on a studio, that you can use with a 6.35 adapter... + an external microphone.
Every arguments trying to explain that move are irrelevant or poorly failing. You said the most important, I complete with what some ppl say:
- They say it was to get more place for the tech inside...
→ Close to Bullshit, they used this place for the new vibration system, which doesn't add any real useful feature. The summum of gimmick? (for now, don't know what's intended for later...)
- It's said it's for waterproof?
→ Don't really need to argue on that, the S7, 8 months earlier, provided it with a IP68 certif, so WTF?
- Some say it will force Wireless producers to imporve the market?
→ The bluetooth also has limits in term of quality, & same, they don't necessarily need to be pushed to make better products.
- The most obvious utility of this choice remains... $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
That makes it a far LESS versatile device, which looses a significant part of its name's pertinence: a "SmartPhone" .
Cheers
Agreed. There was nothing stopping Apple from improving quality and promoting wireless while still keeping the old jack.
The iJack* :D
excatly my thoughts on it lol there is no good reason to remove the headphone jack except money. Did find it funny though that apple wasn't the first to do such a thing (as usual) as moto Z has also took the plunge in doing this though haven't looked into why but only thing I can think off is the tech for the moto mods though I'm sure it would still all fit. Apple like you say have no reason too remove it either especially if audio is no better or as Juan said slightly worse albeit not noticeable by most people but the only reason has got to be money. Surprised they included the adaptor and that you can still use 3rd party bluetooth headphones tbf.
Narindra Singh
Lol you reduce all my points to this one, just because I didn't search on the potential improvements of the Bluetooth tech? It's all right, I don't pretend to be anyone or have any official knowledge.
I was making a point based on the actual situation, & highlighting that even with all future improvements, the headphone jack didn't block any, yet removing it immediatly & "delaydly" block some features.
Then, with the bluetooth 5.0, I'm personnaly sceptikal regarding its health behaviour with the human body, seen what the current wireless technologies already trigger... (but I know it's out of topic)
Narindra Singh
With the evolution of BT tech, the brain of users will be definitly even more affected, that's amazing/funny to point this out on the other sense :)
very informative video thank you. With the iPhone 7 you have to carry an adapter. With the note 7 you have to carry a fire extinguisher. Choose your accessory
LOL it's all about perspective.
Did you miss the recall for every Note 7. Samsung have identified the problem and will rectify it. New and replacement Note 7's won't have the problem.
Why do you need a fire extinguisher for the N7? Didn't they recall all phone and replaced the batteries?
Is an internet meme, was funny till the replacement
well, apparently there's a person that got his note 7 on fire even after the replacement... I am a Samsung user since the day I own a smartphone but... I don't want my dick burned :/
I compared the analog audio port and the lightning port audio with my beats earphones playing the same video at the same volume on both tests and for me the lightning audio is louder then the analog audio.
On which devices? Also lightning is still analog unless you use an external DAC.
louder does not mean better when it comes to headphones
As you are Someone who uses beats, your thoughts on audio are not viable.
hahahaha....did you just test out audio through beats??? 😂😂😂
Beats?.....LMFAO, What a sad fashion victim.
FIRST!
damn
you were early...
haha 😂
lol
hahaha. ture. but you know it is not fair you beat us there :-)))
Seriously being an Apple fan, I see no reason to upgrade to the 7. Looks basically the same, camera is not that much better and no headphone jack. If this goes on, Apple will be extinct in a few years.
They will will innovate, once they see sales falling too much, it's business.
introducing the new apple idust! it does.. wait for it.. Nothing! no headphone jack, no pesky screen that always gets dirty or cracked, no need to charge it, and no more annoying phone calls or texts! available now! for only $599.99!
this might be the first year that the old phone sells more than the new one
Felt the same from S5 to S7. Nothing new same design. Pretty bad.
But the change from the S5 to the S7 was drastic, they went from plastic to metal.
That lightening port will break a shitload faster with people pulling their headphones in and out. Stupid business decision no matter how you put it
yeah, especially they don't have wireless charging.
its a great business decision for them because more idiots will buy a new phones
The people complaining about the lightning earphones are the same people who complained that 720p and 1080p 'looked the same' and wanted companies to just stick with 720p forever
Dislexic Potato go to 5:00 and that is your answer to that dumb comparison. Going from 720 to 1080 was an improvement, going from a 3.5mm to none at all is a step back not foward.
1. sees pocket now's new video on audio
2. checks if its Juan
3. sit back and relax
:-)
THE REVIEW GODS HAVE SPOKEN!
so does that make me their prophet?
Thats micheal fisher
KILL THE iPhone7 SEND IT TO HELL AND NEVER BRING IT BACK!!!
Thanks for nothing, Apple.
The courage to milk your wallet.
iPhone has run out of ideas on how to improve their phone products. I was team iPhone until the 6 came out. Honestly wasn't all too impressed. Tried an android and I was in heaven with it's quality.
iPhones haven't been the 'best' since way back with the 4S
5S would have to be my favorite
Only thing phone companies will ever change is its camera quality and speed. Everyone pretty much already made the smartphones as good as they can be, unless someone actually comes up with another innovative technology to add.
Which android are you using?
its not like they dont have ideas,, they just feed them slowly so they dont have to innovate or or spend much resources on R&D. once fanboys realize this they will hace serious problems
Electrocution is not why the ground is there...
exactly the reason i scrolled down lol
Is it ground, or is it neutral? One of the two slots on standard US wall outlets is neutral. Only one side is "hot" but the other needs to be there to complete the circuit. Ground is the circular third pin. That IS to prevent electric shock.
*****
The two slits in a wall outlet are "line" (or "hot"), and "neutral" (or "return"). Both of them carry electrical current when something is plugged into them, that's the point. However, the hot socket is the only one that will shock you if you stick something into it. Neutral and ground (the roundish hole) won't shock you. So, I was wondering, did the video correctly identify the fourth line in the headphone jack as *_ground_* (not required to complete the circuit and there to prevent danger in the event of short circuit), or is it actually *_neutral_* (required to complete the circuit, and carries current as long as it's plugged in)?
*****
Oh, DC. Right.. I should have considered that, oops.
Right? There's nowhere near enough voltage or amperage going through an audio jack to electrocute a person anyhow.
Dude well done - Good review. My iphone 7 plus is approved and waiting for me at the store now... Do I go and get it ? Or get the p9 plus, V20, S7 Edge ?
The reason that I remember from the keynote was "lack of space". Unfortunately that connector is huge (comparatively) and it makes perfect sense to be removed. As for audio quality it seems that it is about the same as the 6s so how does that suddenly make it bad quality? Yeah, they didn't improve on it, but they didn't make it worse either.
Well like he said, for most people it wouldnt mean squat for audio quality. But for those people who are audiophiles/audio snobs, we do care. Take into consideration what he says about how Apple is doing away with a port that isnt even considered a legacy interface yet and pushing even more manufacturing costs onto consumers. Profit margins on iPhones are huge with that 260usd ish cost of components and factoring in advertising and labour costs, probably half that goes into Apple's pockets or otherwise called "Innovation costs" which i call bs.
They made it worse. You cannot play FLAC files and if you happen to have something like the Shure Se425, the audio quality downgradation can be noticed.
But headphone jacks aren't that big. if i had to choose between a barometric baffle or better audio...
Unfortunately the 3.5 millimeter jack is quite big for a phone. If they want to fill it with even more s in the same shell something has to be removed.
Why the hell didn't they leave the original headphone jack and added the new option? I know, it would make sense for everyone but the Apple's bottom line. The courage would be if they put the main street ahead of Wall street. Kudos for the video. Apple needs to be pressured to take responsibility for their BS.
Haptic feedback chip is in its place. Preparing for a full screen no button phone.
What does that mean?
the thing is that they could have leaved it there, lightning earphones work on the lightning connector all the way down to the iphone 5
They used the space to put in the new taptic feedback engine that replaces the old home button.
Did anyone ask for it?
Well...No. But...courage!
Oh, I get it now. Courage. Yes off course.
Looks like hissgate is becoming a thing....
HISSSS
what
Go look it up
What?
Ok so basically some people iPhone 7 make a high pitched whining sound under heavy load like gaming
Great review Juan, I'm leaving my galaxy s7 edge behind for the iPhone 7 plus 256 gb I'm not a apple fan more of a android person I'm going to The ios to see if it works, meaning buttery smooth less lag and apps crashing if ios meets and delivers on my expectations I just might stay with Apple, but that's a big If
RIP
RIP
Trust me, it's going to exceed your expectations. I've moved a year ago from the galaxy s5 to the iPhone 6s and now this year to the iPhone 7 plus and I have not regretted a single thing. The lag is gone it's buttery smooth and overall a great experience for me. Sure, you might say that Samsung has improved DRASTICALLY since the galaxy s5 (which they've had) and I can respect that, I just like a phone that is lag free 90% of the time. I am in no way shape or form dissing Samsung or saying that they're unreliable, I just don't know if I can trust them again after acquiring PTSD from the galaxy s5 due to all the lag I had (from my experience, I'm not speaking for everyone) I respect everyone's decisions when it comes to their phones. (And yes I do know there's more options than Samsung when it comes to android however I love their screens and I believe they are superior to any other screen on the market)
good luck going back to 2014 🖒
+Micheal Upchurch Hope it works out for you, but being an ex iPhone user after 9 years. Don't get you hopes up. It is literally smoke and mirrors. It's not buttery smooth, apps crash, and yes it lags as well. You won't notice it at first, but after about a 3-4 weeks get ready. Oh and just a heads up. iPhones have the weakest wireless connections. Wifi, bluetooth, and cellular all worse than the competition (I'm not talking minor differences). Apple breaks bluetooth functionality with every update. Don't know how they do it, but you can bet on it happening.
I was a bit skeptical like so many about removing the headphone jack. It will obviously take some time to adjust properly, since not all devices have lightning ports. But I was so surprised at how much the audio quality has increased through even the lightning EarPods, compared to the 3.5mm EarPods. Every aspect including, soundstage, fidelity has increased. Now I'm like...you know...I'm totally okay with removing the headphone jack for increased audio quality.
Nah dude, Wireless is just overpriced shit. Jack has absolutely okey specs. Why do you think that even today most sub 1000$ cans use it? Yes, because it doesnt matter so you opt for most endurance. All that bullshit we hear about better audio without jack is just ridiculous. I will not buy any wireless earpods/headphones or whatever because its just bad tech. It costs so much more, you cannot repair it, and in sound quality its light years behind a good headphones. Anyway Why do I need shit DAC in every headphone when I can get the best of the best and just get headphones not worring about bad quality? I bet those 160$ apple earpods would be destroyed by most 20$ jacked ones. Anyway for me until I cannot use electrostatics with it, all this wireless nonsence doesnt exist for me.
Can you mention how exactly you conduct these tests? I'd love to know what you're doing to properly judge audio quality.
Juan! Which phone has the best headphone audio? V20, htc 10,or axon 7?
Axon 7
V20 is untested so can't speak about that yet.
HTC
Ajheet Jayabalan not even close.
V20
The included adapter is obviously cheap and 'good enough' for the masses.
However it now opens the door for a higher end external DAC and headphone amp.
Either built into headphones, or a separate device.
I think it is a good thing in the long term. However if Apple really wanted to save the world of audio quality, they should have gone with a more universal standard like USB-C.
So then all phone/computer/stereo/tv/device manufacturers could transition across.
Now we will have a standards war to see what will be the standard moving forward, and guaranteed it will no be the lightning connector...
Apple would charge the headphone companies to license their lighting connection so it'll make headphones more expensive and make apple a shit ton of money
Apple actually does use the USB-C but they use it on their MacBook, they actually helped develop the USB-c with other manufacturers. However they have never used anything other than their own plugs, the old 30 pin and now lightning, on their handheld devices. They want to be in control of the hardware within the devices, it may be a lot easier for them to incorporate the Lightning connector into their devices because they developed all the hardware together and can save space by doing so.
the human ear can't hear more than 16 dacs
which is all bull shit especially the the the bit about the not being able to see more then 750p
or pass 30 fps
Holy shit this comment section is lame.
or hold more than 2900 mAh
the human ear cant hear more than dis dick
How could anyone dislike this video? The man spoke the truth and showed proof of what he said! Just goes to show IF APPLE SELLS A PIECE OF SHIT WRAPPED IN A APPLE LOGO THERE FANS WILL BUY IT NO DOUBT!!! Thats how sad Apple fans have become:(
Angry Apple fans dislike the truth.
Apple fanboys.
Wooooo!!!!!! Slow down there! First off who said the 6P was the best Android phone? 2nd U should do some homework cuz I do have a Iphone 7 plus and yes I was going to leave my Note 7 for Apple yes I was but after playing with it and comparing it to the Note 7 you have to be insane or a follower or trying to fit in or like being told what to do or like throwing your money away you get the point but you have to be one of those to switch from a Iphone from a Note 7. But do you enjoy but come on for real you can honestly say Apple havent sold the same phone for 3years straight? No wireless or fast charging man its 2016 and its still taking you guys 2 hours to charge your phone come on dude really? But go ahead defend apple! Thats on You.
***** "Your just mad you can't buy one"
You just lost any credibility. You realize most flagship Android phones cost just as much as the iPhone right?
"So I bought the best android phone the Nexus 6p"
The 6p is far from being the best Android phone.
"Never will I go back to android. There is no comparison software wise"
I'll have to agree software wise there is no comparison, Android destroys iOS. But it's not for everyone.
"Galaxy S6 can be bought for a puny $250 in perfect condition. And iPhone 6s? $600."
So you want to compare a phone almost 2 years old compared to a phone released 12 months ago. Typical.
I disliked the video because he's way too biased, he even goes as far to say that there's no tangible benefit to the consumer for removing the headphones jack and also said that the reason apple removed it was because of "courage"? that makes no sense and it's not what apple said....I think it's a big inconvenience but I wouldn't go as far as to say that Apple doesn't know what they're doing, that's ridiculous. P.S. i'm not getting the iPhone 7
Yesterday I traded in my 6 for a 7 and I feel like it was a definite upgrade except for the removal of the headphone jack. It's such an inconvenience that I am close to returning it and getting an SE instead. But I have a week to think about it.
Great, very informative video. Glad you're part of Pocketnow Bagnal!
The SE is such a scrappy little phone. really liked that lil guy.
if u would return it...better wpuld be the 6s i reckon.
I get its a pain in the ass, but you get an adapter that you can just leave plugged in onto your commonly used headphones and they already come with earphones. I wouldn't let this discourage me, after all it is the most powerful smartphone in the market ;)
one more flaw with this is you cant listen to wired headphones and charge the battery at the same time.
Oh I'm SURE there will be yet another adapter which you can buy for only like $40 more dollars to do just that! Or just get a battery case! Or just buy some Beats! JUST SPEND MORE MONIES!!!
great.. time to sell my other kidney also
... and there you have the REAL REASON for this. Its ALL about the apple Borg collective / mother ship gaining control over lightning accessory market. If you want an "Apple Certified" lightning accessory that is guaranteed of working... IT WILL COST YOU. Eliminate freedom of choice, force the Borg to conform. Or take your chances with non-certified accessories and risk them getting blocked by iOS.
Another option - stop buying iProducts and get a better alternative. There is a WORLD of better devices by other brands out there to choose from, just go and look around. You will be pleasantly surprised at what you may find... lol
not only that you can't connect jack to jack aux to a speaker or stereo or radio.
One thing im worried about is, i use an iPhone 5 (got it from my parents after they changed) and normally i could charge my phone while at the same time listening to music or audio. If i did change to an iPhone 7 that feature would be gone for me (and others too probably)
Well i guess Apple would probably sell something that would help that but still. (also sorry for my bed usage of English as i am Swedish)
They have this thing new thing called a lightning dock, that I have been looking at that will solve this issue
Ohh i'll go check it out! thank you!
Nice
So quality drop is slight but the quality is already low. For most people who already use iPhones, this probably doesn't bother them. And for the audiophiles, if they have been using iPhones before the 7, shouldn't they have already invested in some good lightning connector DACs?
iPhone 6-6s already have one of the best in build dac on phone market
The whole point about using a different connector is not about giving better sound quality, is about additional functionality like delivering power or other information through to your headphone.
For example, noise cancelling headphones would draw power from iPhone instead of a onboard battery where you need to charge the headphone or put AAA batteries.
Just the info I was looking for thank you. Will there be a sound quality comparison of the new wireless tech in the iPhone 7 in your full review? I HATE the sound quality of music over Bluetooth compared to wired headphones, and it would be interesting to see a comparison of the AirPod tech sound quality vs current Bluetooth codecs vs 3.5mm wired headphones.
"the reason is courage..not to increase audio quality" 😂😂😂😂😂
I upgraded from iPhone 5s and the quality is way better. I like this guy though, great review
They just opened up the dongle and actually there is DAC chip installed in the 3.5m to lightning.
and for only $10 bucks
There would have to be a dac, a low quality one yes but a dac none the less.
So aftermarket dongle makers could theoretically build in a good DAC?
They never were. Well, at least I assume lighting supported digital audio out for years? As USB has on Android devices. Still nice to be able to get analog out from the internal DAC so you don't need to carry a dongle around.
High end audio companies have been making external DAC's and AMP's for Android and iPhones. They've always been able to do this through the lightning connector.
I really see no upside to this move. Other than audio manufacturers being slightly encouraged to make their own DAC and AMP
How does modern Bluetooth audio compare to 3.5mm output? It sucks that the lightning connector is worse than the original 3.5mm audio jack but wasn't the main reason of getting rid of the audio jack to get rid of the wires entirely, not just push everything to lighting connectors?
Notes, adapter has 97 dB of dynamic range vs 99 dB. The DAC is a 16-bit DAC which can only have a dynamic range of 96 dB. The problems are minimal here. The THD on the adapter is 0.0002 vs 0.0001 which is a loss. Next is the output impedance which is 0.6 vs 1.5 which is a huge gain. For any highly sensitive headphone or low impedance headphone, an output impedance lower than 1 is a big gain. For headphones with wild impedance curves, higher output impedance will affect the sonic qualities of the headphone in question.
thank you for existing!
:-)
next year Apple will add back the headphone jack on the 7s and they will say it's innovation
So true lol
*7H
Excellent and very informative video... Thumbs up!!!!
:-)
I have the same problem with the earpods.
Which earphones would you recommend which sounds good and fits comfortably?
Not toooooo expensive.
Just out of interest I fired up my old 2nd gen iPod and compared the sound quality to my iPhone 6 with a good pair of headphones. The ipod from 10 years ago beats the phone by greats lengths. Seems like good audio is not top priority any more for these guys. I'm hoping we'll see more higher quality lighting DACs to use our regular headphones, like what Apogee did with the Groove for USB.
Apple - shiny on the outside, rotten on the inside
well it has a retina display, which pixel density hasnt been upgraded since the iphone 4, but hey, its something "new"
But.... it's probably faster than your phone
Id take a tiny drop in speed if it meant features out the ass like a headphone jack, 1080p or higher resolution display, better multitasking and fast charging...
same, only thing isheep have is speed.
I use the EarPods on my computer to watch porn and my M50x for music and I'm just like 😡 apple come on son 😂
LOL. Thank you for being so specific with your usage.
You summed it up. Replacing the headphone jack doesn't need to be a thing until we at least have something better to replace it with. This is a downgrade for no reason at all. What's that you say? A bigger taptic engine! Woopdy fkn dooo.
It means better waterproofing.
And there is no point in having two ports when both do the same thing.
Stuffy Pancake They do not do the same thing. And iphone is only ip67 that is not waterproof that is barely even water resistant. In fact it's the lowest rating to even be considered water resistant.
water proofing has nothing to do with it though. Sony has had water proof phones for the longest time and they kept the headphone jack
CESAR-PWNS The galaxy phones are ip68 and they have a headphone jack.
They wanted something "innovative", and they thought fuck it, were Apple. They will buy it anyway.
Wait?? What? Why are you testing the connector only? I would love to see the results of headphones that are coming straight out with lightning to see if they also are exactly the same or worse. Or by small chance better like apple claims.
Maybe try a few different brands compared side by side with ones that are analog as well.
Thanks for making this video!! Do you have an overall analysis of the audio components/output/etc of iphones over the years, and maybe even ipods? If not, do you know where I could find such a thing? I'm interested to see how the iphone in particular has cut corners on audio over the years, because I suspect they have. Anyway, thanks again. This video was very interesting and informative. Many thumbs up!
Apple lied. They didn't get rid of it because of "courage" but because they were running out of space thanks to their additional camera and the new touch button. They could have easily made the phone slightly thicker, dramatically increased the battery life on the way and kept the 3.5mm jack. But that would have needed actual *courage*.
And Bluetooth isn't a successor, it's a more expensive, less reliable alternative.
they didn't remove it bc of space mate they ddi it because they don't make money off the port and making it water proof would be an expensive move for them bc they don't make money of it and they do make a shit ton of money off that lightning port and other devices like their wireless headphones (which are really bad for your ears btw because they do not seal at all)
Finally someone that knows about audio
Please do a review of LG V20 sound quality
I will once I have a proper consumer released phone! My engineering unit is sounding REALLY good though. :-)
The sound quality of all 3.5mm headphone jacks are the same bro
Yes but it is the DAC and amp connected to that jack that makes the difference
This new UA-cam thing makes it hard to reply... To specific people...
+JuanBagnell can't wait
I'm not sure if this has been brought up yet. This means the audio quality is only limited to the DAC used in the headphone or connector. This means anyone can have studio quality sound on a phone by just buying a third party headphone/connector using a high quality DAC.
My good sir, the ground wire in the ear phones is the negative terminal so the voltage can return to the device (to form a closed loop). It is not there to prevent the ear phones from shocking you. I do not know the voltage of the audio signal (it should be less than 5V, though), but such a low voltage will not shock you.
the ground isnt so you dont electrocute yourself, its the negative connection for the positive right, left, and mic channels.
Your remark let me know this guy doesn't know what he is talking about
He made a mistake. Everything else he said was spot on accurate.
THANK YOU!! I hope Apple watches this and stop their bullshit.
dude...Apple knows they're "bullshit"-ing everyone...but they also know that even with this "bullshit" they can make more money cuz every goddamn idiot is gonna happily swallow that "bullshit" and get an orgasm from getting ripped off
Idm, I barely use earphones.
LOL!!! Well said. Happy not to be one of those.
do the wireless headphones come with the phone? because I think it's pretty crazy if they do not.
Of course not. $160 extra, shipping next month.
And why anyone would want $160 Apple earpods is beyond me.
Apple got me fucked up. I better be able to hear Angels singing with those wireless 160$ EarPods.
whaat ?? 160$?? no tax right ?? its 190€ to 210€ here in finland :DDDD
Darnell™ 😂😂😂
Phil was 100% correct on the courage part. The "courage" is going to come in the form of the decision you'll need to make when you'll need to try and replace the dead headphone jack by yourself. Due to excessive wear/tear on that port by extra plugging in/out of your headphones
Agreed. A huge stepback. Now when my battery is low and I'm at the car, I'll have to decide between hearing music or charging the phone, when I can do both at the same time with my damn iPhone 5! I'm just waiting to see what Google delivers with the Pixel to switch.
First of all, everything said in the video is true. But, there are also other viewpoints that are really important indeed!
Well, for me the reason to remove the headphone jack would be to push the wireless market. And yeah of course we all know that wireless isn't nearly as good in quality, but.. we would love as many things as possible to be wireless. We browser the web wirelessly, we take phone calls wirelessly... wireless makes many things a lot easier and more enjoyable.
I mean, who wants to worry about cables anyway, if it works wirelessly? Headphones already work wirelessly but, for sure, wireless technology has to improve dramatically to make it worth over cable (although for many people wireless headphones are already worth it).
Apple didn't make anything better by removing the headphone jack (they even made it worse), but it will push the wireless market and hopefully we will see some great new wireless headphones and improved technology in the future.
But .. lets at least mention one advantage of the lightning port over the headphone jack (which all the haters just don't want to). Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Noise Control is possible without the need of a battery, because the power comes from the lightning port. A perfect example: the JBL Reflect Aware. USB Type-C makes that possible also, of course.
lol yes wireless internet is nice.. but we do not need to charge our routers or cellphone towers
'Longer and thicker'
WTF
SMALLER THE BETTER M8
You tell him XD
Have you ever broke a charger, that's because it is to small, and to thin.

Holy crap. SomeAudioGuy drops the mic. iPhone 7 is a no go.
Going by your explanation, since the DAC has been removed with the audio jack removal since it is now digital, the Dac is required to be integrated in the headphones now, which does have benefits for the phone from a hardware aspect i.e. Bigger battery, more space. Plus, Once companies like Bose or JBL start releasing new products based on built-in DACs in their headphones with obviously better quality DAC's than what Apple supplies wouldn't the sound be better anyways than with what you used for your tests since output quality is based off of the quality of the DAC and amp? Since you're dealing with digital, really the quality would come down to how good the built in DACs are in the headphone no? The experience wouldn't change regardless of the device because it's using the quality of what's built into the headphone. It would make sense to slowly transition people still using an audio jack connector to just get headphones with built in DAC's. Plus wouldn't lightning connected headphones now make it easier for any headphones with a digital connection to have noise cancellation features available since the headphones can draw power from the phone as it's power source? Since a 3.5 mm audio jack cannot draw any power wouldn't it it open up new opportunities for audio manufacturers to add more features like noise cancellation to regular headphones without the need for a massive battery in their headphones or charging people up the ass to have a battery installed on their headphones just to have active noise cancellation. Really the consumer wins at the end of the day because cheaper headphones will now get more features. How can you say it's a step back for consumer audio consumption when it opens up possibilities for manufacturers And more potential features for the end user by going digital. Really it puts the ball in manufacturers hands since the quality of audio is subject to the quality of DAC installed in the head phone.
Well, the iPhone never was made with quality music output in mind. But that's not my issue with your arguing about the HP-jack adapter.
1st: You didn't mention the fact, that the DAC does decide about the Bitrate and Sampling frequency used. While it's true, that this adaptor is limited, it doesn't mean, that any DAC on the lightning port is. In fact, there are many DACs out there to drive the iPhone at about 192 kHz at 24 bit, as iOS does support the USB audio class 2.0 specification, wich is supported by a white range of DACs out there.
2nd: Having a DAC inside the iPhone to support that sampling frequency or bitrate doesn't add anything to the sound fidelity, as the dac inside the iPhone was always too shitty to output enough fidelity to make that high resolution files count. Also, the amp section inside the iPhone always was too weak to drive a decent pair of headphones.
3rd: There is lots of hardware out there to get MUCH more sound quality out of the data on your iPhone, wich is connected with either some adaptor combination, or (mostly) a simple Lightning to USB cable. Those will make this adapter cable not just obsolete, but look like plain garbage in comparison. Whoever wants to drive a descent pair of Headphones on an iphone wont connect it to the iPhone itself, as well as they wont use that adapter.
4th: Decent Headphones to directly connect to the lightning port will sport a DAC and amp with a lot better specs than this shitty cable. besides: Most users with drive shitty 5 to 40 buck headphones or headsets with this adapter cable, so the quality of the output won't matter anyways.
Mentions "Ground" as one of the 4 requirments, and that its needed to not electrocute yourself...
Lost all credibility there, my good man...
and now Apple is surveying if people really use the headphone jack on their macbooks
YUP! You know this has to be a huge social experiment. At least on a Mac you could use a more widely adopted standard on USB-C...
Just why? lol
If people are not happy with the direction Apple is going and I'm talking to Apple fans aswell, the only vote you have is to vote with your wallet. Stop buying Iphone 7 products and they will hear it loud and clear
Or buy phones like the iPhone SE. I know a lot of people made fun of it, but it's shaping up to be my favorite Apple of the bunch.
Can you get a DAC for the 6s to improve the sound to headphones or our we stuck with the internal one? Nice video. How much does the audio quality degrade with Bluetooth? Thanks!
The adapter is not meant to deliver better quality, it's just included to make the transition easier. To get the best quality just use headphones that have a lightning cable. Lightning cable headphones don't require a dac and can deliver 24 bit audio.
apple has always been a greedy company in my eyes. thanks for this review
says the future is wireless, doesn't have wireless charging -_-
If theres is some that deserve a milking views. Its you guys at pocketnow so youre good. Iphone7 sucks tho
:-)
Really interesting stuff. I've learned quite a bit about audio quality since you've joined PocketNow. As for the iPhone 7, even though the 7's lightning port ends up with roughly the same quality audio as last years iPhone, I'm curious about how the audio fares when using this phone's wireless headphones. Do you know if it's any better than what bluetooth headphones currently offer?
Everyone talks about the issues of audio output by losing the headphone jack. For me, it's a problem of being able to get audio in AND simultaneously monitor the sound when I use an iRig Pro for news reporting. Until there's a solution I will have to stay with the iPhone 6S Plus.
The *ONLY* upside from iphone is that we get our samsungs 20 bucks cheaper
not courage but money! simple
the main reason for remove the headphone jack is to make more $$$$ money selling airpods and adapters, simple
How about the sound and headphone quality on the Samsung s7? Is there a test on youtube?
I enjoyed your good energy and the thoughtful execution of a somewhat complex subject. Nice work.
i hate the new airpods cause you need a string to put them in your ears and not lose them and you need to buy one for 10$ screw you apple plus you can buy 10 times better earbuds in lower prices
I often use earphones while charging the phone... how can that be possible here?
You'd need to go wireless or buy an additional adapter.
Some places might come out with a dual split adapter? One for headphones n one for charging? Who knows. Really have to wait n see.
+Chinli Sung There's already one sold by Apple themselves, the dock.
Either way you need to spend more money or do the smart choice and don´t get the iPhone 7
I have been doing it for over 2 years... and the battery still in good shape.
4:10 "blind 'taste' test"
Thank you for freakin' explaining what all this means. I learned something and I like that you have the actual audio signal graphs present to represent the sound output. Also you have my next phone(LG V20) although LG has frustrated me to no end with how they've handled this launch. Can't wait to see a hands on or camera impression video on that beast. Lastly, I'm looking forward to your camera reviews of both the iPhone 7/Plus and V20.👍👍
Nice honest review. Removing something just to add an adapter can't be the smartest move. So you have your Jet Black phone, sticking to a poorly looking white adapter cable thing which might break at some point like many iPhone cables did in the past.
Also wireless as an alternative: people are complaining about phone battery life most of the time. Those tiny earplugs have even smaller batteries. I would hate it to charge the headphones every 2 to 3 days next to the phone you charge daily and probably another tablet or more Bluetooth speakers in the house.
I feel like they sound better
MKG 5150 ... Bcoz you already have it and avoid to feel regret
well maybe it is stupid but its also dumb
Here is what I don't understand, If an iPhone with a lightening port has an internal DAC why the volume buttons still affect the digital audio output, Could apple be just taking the audio from the analog headphone preamp and sending it to the internal DAC input? That sounds silly though.
Very well put together video :) Keep up the great work!
Are you sure about what you're saying about the "lack" of a better DAC on the iPhone 7? Because I have a Sony MDR-XB450 (Extra Bass edition) which actually sounds way higher and better with the iPhone 7 than with the iPhone 6...
