Hi Autumn, I LOVE your videoes, they are so informative! I'm a HUGE animal lover, all of them, and have wanted a pig for about as long as I can remember. My birthday is a week away and my husband wants to get a pig for me. He thought it better to let me know ahead of time, luckily! I have been doing A LOT of research and was led to your website. So thankful for that! My question right now is what do you use for litter in their pans?
@@autumnacresminipetpigs I saw that you like to use the rabbit pans, but do you put in any litter media? Like cat litter, or a more natural type of litter not clay based, ie corn cob litter, or crushed walnut shells, or pine, etc...? That kind of thing. Or do you just leave it as a bare pan? I would think they'd slip all around without something over the plastic pan bottoms.
I’m sorry, I misunderstood. I don’t use any litter. Kitty litter is dangerous since they will eat it and it will cause a blockage. The only safe litter is Yesterday’s News. It’s recycled paper pellets. They eat it but it is safe. They make a huge mess too. I don’t care for it. I also used disposable pee pads but they also chew on those and the plastic can cause problems. Washable pee pads work well but I got tired of washing all those pads. I don’t use any litter or pads. The rabbit pans have a textured bottom so they aren’t slippery. Regular litter pans are too slippery to go without some form of safe litter or pads. Does this make sense?
@@autumnacresminipetpigs no worries that makes perfect sense to me. I do wonder if the crushed walnut shells litter would be bad for them if they ate it? That's all that is in it, and they are crushed into small "grains". No matter though, if they are ok in the rabbit pans, that's good for me. My next challenge is to get our city codes changed so we can have mini pigs as pets, right now they are classified as swine livestock. Gonna give it my best shot anyway! Thank you so much Autumn! I look forward to your next video and learning all I can about these precious critters! And the brand of the walnut litter is Naturally Fresh. I use it for my cats and really prefer it over other litter. No clay dust or silicates to bother kitty noses and respiratory systems, or ours either.
I don’t know anything about that litter. My guess is that the pig would eat it continuously because it smells like food and make a huge mess with it. I would error on the side of caution and not use it for the pig. Also, make sure your kitty litter boxes are out of reach of the pig. Wow!! Good for you!! I am getting a potbelly piglet in a couple of weeks. She has been trained by her mama to go potty in a corner of their pen (outdoors).
