Snuggles in the North: Life with a Pet Pig in Canada
Katie Ingram wears many hats: a university instructor, media professional, journalist, author and pig mom. She grew up with a variety of animals (a dog, rabbits, fish and a horse), but always wanted a pet pig. No one believed that she would have one though. Alex grew up with animals also but did not think he wanted a pet pig. Katie saw an ad for a pig and decided to get it. When they brought the pig home within a couple days they realized that they were not prepared for a pig at all. They ended up giving her to someone who was able to take care of her properly. They were devastated at having to give her up. Later on after doing research and being better prepared they started looking for another pig and ended up getting Snuggles.
Snuggles will be 4 years old in November. She used to love to cuddle but after about 2 years old she has turned sassy but is still very sweet. Snuggles knows how to dance (spinning in a circle). She also knows her left from her right so while she is dancing they will tell her to go the other direction and she will spin that other way. She knows how to give a good kiss (basically booping her nose). She knows how to get a specific ball when instructed to. She is learning how to use communications buttons.
Katie and Alex share what life is like with Snuggles and share some things she loves to do. They also share their biggest challenge of owning a pet pig and their favorite part of owning one. They share that their biggest piece of advice is to do your research and not just go with how cute a pig is because they are a 20 year commitment.

    Any small or young pig is easier to be tamed or disciplined but rescued old potbelly is difficult and can’t use any of these techniques. Crate and potty trained, apartment life pig came to my home with yard and now she camps out at my yard and gets aggressive. She even doesn’t want you to come inside house.

      @@AAA0327 Yhe reason these techniques don’t work with your pig is because these are two completely different situations. In this video, I was talking about young pigs who mostly bite because they are looking for food or getting food more quickly. Your pig is aggressive because she is terrified and territorial. I have a free webinar on aggression in pet pigs. It will help you understand why this is happening and how to fix it. autumnacres.easywebinar.live/event-registration Let me know if I can send you other resources. Hi, thanks for the video! i've been thinking about getting a minipig as a pet on and off for a number of years by now; recently my interest peaked again when i've been looking at them in the local zoo. And thus i started to look into the topic again... i'll absolutely check out more videos of yours. my take away from this video would be to just shove the pig away if it nibbles at me, same thing if it were to block my path?

      @@Eistier I appreciate that you are doing thorough research before deciding. I wish more people would do that. When you raise a piglet, you can prevent this behavior by setting yourself up as a leader right from the start. A simple snout grab for biting is very effective. When my pig is in my path, I just keep walking towards them until they move. An aggressive pig is a challenge but knowing this from the beginning gives you the tools to avoid it altogether. I think I need to keep her in the barn for a week because idk how to properly get rid of lice and I don't want it to get onto my 4 yorkies. Please tell me there's a home remedy or something cheap that I can use to treat her. I named her Debbie Deb. She has an old soul but she's so cute. Please help me with any type of information. • @autumnacresminipetpigs
      @autumnacresminipetpigs 2 місяці тому

      @@phsycoyella3891 hi! So, I just want to make sure it is lice that she has. You can see them? Lice can be seen by the naked eye. Pig lice is species specific so they can only live on pigs. If you can’t see a bug but she is itching herself raw, it could be mites. The Dawn wash and oil could potentially kill the lice but the Dawn will dry her skin out so bad that it could lead to another problem. It won’t kill mites. If you treat with Ivermectin, that will clear up both lice and mites. You can order a small bottle on Amazon or find it at Tractor Supply. Ivermectin Dosage: 0.2 ml per 10 pounds of body weight I give it every 7 days for 4 weeks in a row. So every Monday for 4 weeks in a row. Although the bottle says injectable, it can also be administered orally. You can just put it on her food. It will begin to look better in just a couple days but make sure you give all 4 doses. The Ivermectin kills the bug but not the egg so each dose kills the live bugs. Four cycles should be enough to get them all.

    • @autumnacresminipetpigs
      @autumnacresminipetpigs 2 місяці тому

      @@phsycoyella3891 be careful with a lot of Diatomaceous Earth. The powder is very fine and when they breathe it in, it can cause lung issues. I never use it in an enclosed space. I do sprinkle in fresh bedding but I let it settle before we bring pigs inside the barn.

    Hmm. Our dear Momma pig who's nursing 7 babies. I used to teach her tricks, and we were having so much fun. Until she literally started trying to demand I give her peanuts and when I wouldn't, she'd bark and even jump up on us making really scary sounds. The first time she did it I was really scared, and shouted "Ay!" And as she jumped I gave her a knee to the face. She jumped and barked at me the whole way till I got past the gate. I feel it has to do with hormones, because she doesn't behave this way every day, only intermittently. She lets me touch her babies and we've been working on her own handling too. It's bay by day she might be nice or might not be. She's clicker trained to whole unsalted peanuts and she's so smart. But I've just stopped doing any training at all with her which makes me so sad because she used to look at me like she wanted to work on tricks, even offering me a sit or a twirl, but I'm scared now to even go in her paddock and it makes me cry.

      @@leelandforestfarm you’re absolutely right, a lot of that is hormones. Pigs have a heat cycle approximately every 23 days. When they are in heat, their hormones are raging.
