  • This video footage documents the behavior of wild hedgehogs living in the wild. It is primarily intended for educational purposes.
    Rare video footage!
    We see a wild hedgehog eating a weak but living sparrow.
    The hedgehog is wild and free-living and is fed daily in the garden. Nevertheless, the hedgehog takes the opportunity to eat a weak bird that had previously sought shelter in the hedgehog house. This shot proves that hedgehogs also eat birds when the opportunity arises. This is rare and there are only a few images that show such a scene.
    All animals are wild and free-living native animals.

      @@inesgunther5895 Going by this logic of yours, would you then say that if you got a fatal or terminal disease it would be better if a large animal came and ate you alive?

    They are predators so I am not surprised. This summer I have witnessed in may garden that they ate a fatally wounded mouse. Some say that hedgehogs also contribute to rat control because they can hunt down the young ones.

    I’m quite stunned by this, as I was unaware that Hedgehogs do eat birds, as it’s not something I hear or even recall them doing here in Britain.

    It shocks me very much that some people think that it is better to be eaten alive than to die peacefully!!! 😬😲. There are some seriously scary people out there. I feel bad for any kids they may have..... I sure hope the kids stay healthy otherwise their parents who think getting eaten alive is a great thing will set a wild animal upon their sick children.
    People's warped thinking is really upsetting.
    What kind if person thinks that being eaten alive is better than dying peacefully?!?!?!?

    You didn’t see anything that would suggest that the hedgehog eat the bird🇬🇧

    • @NatureTec
      @NatureTec  5 місяців тому +1

      0:58 - you see that the hedgehog bites the bird and eats it. The video is much longer in reality. You can see from the time how long the hedgehog really eats the bird until it goes to bed. The bird also had several visible bite marks when it was removed one or two days later.

    • @twoofeleven
      @twoofeleven 5 місяців тому

      @@NatureTecIs it certain the hedgehog actually killed the bird, or could the sparrow have died on its own in the meantime? As it looked obviously weak hopping into the hedgehog house. Just curious as I've only known them to eat already dead rodents/birds 🤔

    • @NatureTec
      @NatureTec  5 місяців тому +1

      @@twoofeleven Yes, the bird is weak and has obviously retreated into the hedgehog house to die. In the description of the video it says "the hedgehog takes the opportunity to eat a weak bird". The bird no longer seems to move when the hedgehog starts to eat it - but it was obviously not dead yet. At 0:48 you hear a sound that can only come from the bird. And at 0:50-1:04 you can see the bird trying to defend itself with short, quick movements.

      Hedgehogs are carnivores. They eat mainly insects, but vulnerable little animals like injured birds or mice are good to eat too. They can eat bird eggs too if they can find them on the ground.
