WHAT UP YALL! I want to take a moment to send my condolences to all the families affected by yesterdays tragedy. I don't even feel right uploading this right now...but I still gotta do my job. I am not changing systems (yet haha), but I want to share some of my experiences with you all now having spent time with both. I own both of those cameras and I feel the same way. I like the viewfinder and screen experience better on the R6 and it just feels smoother and softer and better in the hands.
RF mount being locked down is a giant fail. I might have gone Canon if I had 3rd party lens options. Currently, Z mount is the best option. @@mostlymessingabout
Great points, Terry. I have an R6. Love it - but I'm more a Canon shooter by habit now. You're right about the glass options. However, if you can afford the RF glass that's all you'll ever ever want to use. The autofocus and stabilization are life-changing.
Thank you for the honest review. Right on point! I switched from the Sony to the Canon system in April 2022 and can't be happier. Images rendered by the R5 and RF L glasses are magical. So much joy taking stills and movies now. Lightning fast eye AF and able to shoot sharp pictures at 1 sec hand held is a game changer.
Just out of curiosity, how are you able to get sharp photos with 1-sec handheld exposure? Doesn't seem like that would be physically possible even with steady hands.
Hey Terry, as a long time Canon user just starting the mirrorless journey, I have to say that you are not wrong about the lenses. Canon is growing the RF line, however for someone just starting with Canon they do need to carefully consider if the lenses they need/want are available. For myself, and anyone else that has already been using Canon, the lens adapter makes a lot of sense. It will be great to see some more third party support come online though, which I am sure it will. I enjoyed your fair comparison. It really boils down to the fact that you can't really go wrong no matter which camera system you choose to go with these days.
very fair coverage of the Canon system. kudos! I feel that Canon takes care of the little details that never get covered by the media because people like to do apples to apples comparisons, but Canon tries to add features that separate them from the crowd. I don't have personal experience with the R6 but I do own the R5 which is a beast. I take the R5 everywhere. People say the best camera is the camera that you have on you. Well, I always have the R5 on me. Yes, even restaurants. That's how much I love my R5. So when I'm at a restaurant, I set the camera to touchscreen shutter and I hand over the camera to the waiter. He looks all funny, wondering how to use it. I say, "Just tap the screen like a smartphone". And boom, picture taken. And I can instantly send it to my phone and share with my friends or onto social media. The Canon touchscreen is just as good as any smartphone touchscreen so anyone that knows how to use pinch to zoom, tap to focus, etc. will feel right at home on the Canon. That kind of stuff doesn't get covered. The touch and drag AF system is just plain awesome. It's something that never gets demonstrated on UA-cam because it's impossible to record because to use the touch and drag system, you have to put your eye to the viewfinder and as far as I know, the no HDMI output will record when your eye is to the EVF. Some people hear how it works and think, oh, Olympus has that. but no other camera system does it the same way. Also, the R3 has the new eye-controlled AF where you just look where you want to focus and it focuses and this system is sick! Let's say you have 3 guys sprinting toward the finish line and you want to focus and photograph each runner. You only have 11 seconds to photograph them before the race is done. So on most cameras, you have to balance focus (pick an aperture where all of them are sharp) because you don't have time to focus individually on each person. But on the R3, you can have individual focus on each one at wide aperture and still have time before the race is over. It's next level once you get used to how it works. As for the native glass, yes, Canon is behind in terms of sheer numbers. But what native glass they have is bonkers. There is no Sony lens like the 28-70 f2. And there are cheap third-party glass, but it's not where it needs to be. For example, a lot of people swear by the Rokinon/Samyang 85 mm 1.4 which is so much cheaper than the Canon RF 1.2 or 1.8. But this is going to fixed over time. Canon is such a market force that lenses will come fast and hard. But the adapter is always there and it's so good. Old EF glass works better on the R series than they ever worked on older Canon cameras. The color science is a funny thing. I never understood the whole "Canon color science is amazing" thing UNTIL I tried native camera profiles in Lightroom. Before, I thought, "raw is raw." I thought camera profiles were just like presets but they're nothing like presets! The first time I set Lightroom to Camera Standard and then started to edit the image... OH MY GOD. My photos went to next level. Then, I understood why Canon fans raved about Canon colors. I had always previously edited in Adobe Color because I didn't know about camera profiles. And editing in Adobe Color, you can still get great pictures but you can't replicate Camera Standard or any of the other Camera profiles. I actually tried! I started at both Camera Standard and Adobe Color and tried to end at the same destination and it's pretty impossible. You end up with a certain look with Camera Standard and a certain look with Adobe Color.
@@XxFZLxX yes, those are the profiles that match your camera (if you have an R5 for example). start with any of the camera matching profiles and edit from there. at first, there's an adjustment if you've always edited from Adobe Color. at first, it was a little hard to edit because I was just so used to adobe color. but the results are so much better if you start from one of the canon matching profiles.
try opening and converting the images with canon digital professional software. the canon algorithms are even better than those in lightroom. of course it is also a matter of taste. but give it a try
@@SuperSupertube123 I heard images are better with canon's software, but when I tried the software I can't imagine doing bulk edits quickly. I need to do hundreds of images at a time. Plus the new masking in lightroom is amazing and almost as good as photoshop's. If I'm going to do single images at a time, I'll use Photoshop.
I’ve used the android and apple comparison for years when comparing Canon to Sony and Nikon. Canon just works. It’s almost dummy proof, which works well for all users. I own Canon, Sony, and Nikon and I use Canon the least. For everyday use, It’s just hard to match the customization of the buttons and the lens options of the Sony. And until recently, Sony and Nikon always had the best dynamic range which always came in hand in post for me when shooting natural light. I’ve also always preferred the files for Nikon raw images over the rest, which explains why I still pick up my Nikon bodies over my Canons. Nice video as always bro.
Great review man! I shoot both Sony a74 and canon r6 and they’re both incredibly good cameras but lately have been leaning towards selling the a74 and going r5 it’s so hard to match that canon color out of camera. Both cameras are a winner but after using both for long periods now I think canon just matches every scenario so well.
dope review. an an R6 owner that absolutely loves his camera, and has spent time using the A74 have to agree with most of what you're saying. The canon wins for me every time because its breathed new life into my EF glass.Heck I've even bought two lenses that were Ef because adapting them works so well.
Yes. EF glass is getting cheaper by the day because everyone wants RF, but EF works great with the adapter. Great way to expand your lens collection. I leave the adapter on the camera all the time anyway. It would actually be an inconvenience to take it off for one lens and not the others!
Hey, this is a great comparison and much of it sounds right on. This is coming from an admitted Canon fanboy with very little Sony experience, but here goes... You are right that Canon doesn't yet have a huge selection of RF glass, but that is because the R system is only 3 years old. What is the Sony e-mount? 9 or 10 years old? You are right, too, that some RF glass is expensive. But Canon even with a modest number of lenses (around 28 so far) Canon has done a pretty good job covering everything from ultra wide to super telephoto (much better than Nikon has with their Z mount, which is also only 3 years old)). They also do have a few carefully positioned, more affordable lenses. Canon promises to approx. double the number of RF lenses in the next 2 or 3 years. Canon has been quite innovative with their RF lenses, but has yet to see much 3rd party support. There are a fair number of fully manual 3rd party lenses out for RF mount, but only four autofocus at this time (two Viltrox and two Samyang/Rokinon, if I recall correctly). I find it interesting that the "big three" 3rd party lens makers... Sigma, Tamron and Tokina.... haven't rolled anything out yet. Regarding adapting EF glass... There are upwards of 125 million Canon lenses in that old mount that most users say work better than ever when adapted... And some of them are wonderful lenses, well worth considering. There may be issues adapting a 3rd party EF mount lens onto an R series. With some of the newer ones, manufacturers have stepped up to fix the problem, but older 3rd party may not work well. Incidentally, EF glass also can be adapted for use on Sony e-mount, but there is some loss of AF performance. Finally, FYI Canon now has APS-C cameras in the R system too: R10 and R7. The latter costs only $100 more than the Sony a6600 and is loaded with high performance features. Canon has so far only come out with two crop specific lenses (pretty basic RF-S 18-45mm and 18-150mm), but I expect we'll see more in the coming years. I also expect Canon will be offering cinema cameras with RF mount, if they aren't already doing so. They have recwntly intro'd a video oriented R5c, a variant of the R6's 45MP "big brother" the biggest difference being added cooling. Cheers and thanks for the interesting comparison. There really are some great cameras being made today, by Sony, Canon, Nikon, Fuji, Oly, Panasonic and everyone else! Pentax is staying "old school" with only DSLRs, and I hipe does well with them (they also make some great medium format).
As a fellow UA-camr, although for different topics, mine is more based on audio, I think you did an outstanding job presenting this. When I first got into this, I got a Canon EOSR and a Sony A7iii at the same time. I was torn from day one. The way you described this, is the exact way I felt trying to figure out which direction I was going to go. I actually preferred the Canon user experience, but ended up committing to Sony based upon the lack of lens selection for the a R-mount. If a person knows they are going to go strictly to either a GM lens for Sony, or an R-mount lens for Canon, I definitely recommend Canon over Sony. That said, the fact that Sigma and Tamron are making incredible lenses at a much more affordable prices these days that can compete with Sony and Canon glass, that gives the edge to Sony for me.
Glass is a valid point. But the video part where you can assign 3 videos modes 24, 30, 120 fps is probably the best positive on the Sony for a hybride shooter.
I loved the experience of shooting on the R6 besides the 30 min rec limit. Plus I look better on Sony cameras. Top notch content upload T Dubb. Where can I find you for a possible music video shoot?
One big plus for Sony is the custom hold shoot sets. You can assign about a dozen settings to a single button on the back. You can be in manual mode and hold down one button and it will switch you to aperture priority with about a dozen other settings that you've pre adjusted. You can hold down a different back button and suddenly switch to shutter property with a bunch of settings to go with that. Canon cannot do that yet.
Really good analogy with the user experience, Terry. After owning a R6 I can say that it was not the best choice for video. The overheating + 30 min record limit gave me too much anxiety when doing client work. Happily sticking with the Sony system for now.
yeah, if you really are a video only shooter, the better option would have been the R5C which is a beast. However, there are some advantages to the R6 video where you don't get any cropping like you see on the Sony (4k60)
"I gotta be careful, Cleveland get wild sometimes" bro this line killed me. Immediate follow. I love that you kept it all in straight forward user friendly terms that us n00bs can understand, I hate when people get too deep into technical terms I can't fully follow along with. You got straight to the meat and potatoes of what someone like me cares about. Great video.
Great video. Coming from the Sony A7r IV I bought the Canon R5 late in 2022. Mostly because of the color sciense, but also because of the amazing Canon Rf 85 1.2 lens. And I was not dissapointed. Sony having more mp, but also suffered from dust on sensor and lenses. Not an issue on Canon at all. I also had issues with moire in clothes shooting with the Sony. Not an issue with canon so far. I find the images more pleasing in Canon. So I will stick with it. Although some of the Sony primes are really good, I am looking forward to what Canon has in their sleeves for the future. :)
Very fair review. Sony was ahead in image quality for a few years but the Canon R5/R6 closed the gap. I was close to buying Sony for quite a few years but every time I tried the cameras I just hated their ergonomics and UI. Although their ergonomics have improved, the reasons for switching from Canon no longer exist. You can't go wrong with either system - if I was starting out from scratch it would be a very difficult choice.
Canon does let you adjust any button and customize it to your liking as well. Great vid though. I just upgraded from DSLR to Mirrorles (Canon R5) and my god the difference was unimaginable. Totally subbing to your channel dude.
For me personally, I would go with canon. My grandfather is a photographer and have used many different canon cameras, film and digital, so he got a bunch of older Ef glass. And the fact that all Ef glass works flawlessly with r systems (using adapters) is huge. The main problem is, I can’t afford any of the systems :( Great video! Happy I found your channel and you earned a new sub!
This was an excellent presentation. I just switched from Nikon to SONY so I won't be switching to Canon any time soon, but I do believe all you've said about the great qualities in each product line. It's great to have great choices.
I held both yesterday at a Best Buy and I liked the feel of the Canon, but I found the EVF on the Sony sharper. The menu on the Canon was more intuitive in my opinion. Playing with both just made my decision harder. Both are great cameras.
This is an excellent, unbiased, user-centric review! Thanks again for providing a well informed comparison with perspective. Terry is one of the most underrated reviewers in my opinion, and this is case in point.
Currently 2mins into your video... have to comment, so glad you mentioned the quality of cameras and people blaming cameras for their downfalls in their work. We live in the greatest time for creative technology right now.
I agree with most of your points. I when with the canon R6 after my a7iii. My issues with the same. The r6 felt better and the rear LCD was amazing. I loved the ability to change settings on the screen. What I hated was the lack of video customized buttons for video, it overheated often, 30 min record limit. I felt the r6 was a great photo camera but not a true hybrid camera. I will say the Sony colors are way better than the canon mirrorless colors. Canon DSLR are amazing. I sold the r6 and I love the a7iv. It checks all the boxes for me.
Ive been using canon for 20 years and love the menu system and out of the box its easy to set up. The sony has way better dynamic range and low light but ive had a hard time with the godox flash trigger talking to sony. I don't think Sony cares about still photographers using flash. Sony color is weird so many adjustments to get a decent color out of sony.
That's weird I have a Canon 6D Mark II and my color balance is usually way off. this thing frustrates me , and the photos are kind of fuzzy as well. What would be the best Canon for real estate photography stills?
@@luxuriousfir there's probably something wrong with your camera if the images are fuzzy. I've used just about every camera out there since I picked up one in 1984 when I was a kid. I would have your camera checked make sure your lenses are Sharp and your body is okay. I know some Canon models "5d" had back focusing problems and you basically had to shoot it F16 to get anything in focus.
@@luxuriousfir also you're going to have challenges with color balance photographing real estate as you have two or three different color temperatures you have daylight 5500k you have tungsten at 2800-3400k and everything in between. If you shoot Auto white balance and then in Lightroom click the white baseboard on the bottom of most homes that should get you really close. Try shooting at 4400 k or awb and see where that takes you. Also are you using flash or just available light? Do you have any filters on the front of your lens?
This is so refreshing, an unbiased view which from my opinion tells it how it is. I have had both systems and now have an R6 & R5 and bought all RF glass as I have been so impressed. The quality is better but for that it does cost more. Sony will always have higher specs and if that is what you need then maybe that is your calling. But reliability is not as good, the feel of the cameras in the hand are worlds apart and the canon’s are so much nicer to use in terms of the menu’s and touch screens. The android and iPhone analogy is exactly right. Sony’s are excellent camera’s and full on tech which previously had an edge, but more recently Canon have the quality, reliability and user experience nailed down and the choice is whether that matters enough to you to pay more for it?
I started using canon 12 years ago when my daughter was born and I wanted to take nice photos of her. I went from a t2i to a 7D to 5d mark iii then a 5d mark iv and then to EOS R and now I’m Using an R6. I’m a happy camper. Canon gives me what I need. The EOS system is very good. And you’re right, every time I use a Sony camera I have a hard time figuring out the menu, specially when setting it up for a video shoot. They have dozens of formats. They remind me of Nikon cameras where the lenses zoom in the opposite way and the way the menu is laid out is sometimes confusing. I guess if I use it long enough I could become used to it. Thanks for This video. My next camera might be the next blackmagic 6k pro (the next upgrade) Your thoughts on that.
Great video. I hope you’re doing well. From my perspective, I was a Nikon shooter for 10 years and after having a z6ii but wanting to change to something that allowed for 10 bit video, I tested both of these cameras, and for me the Sony is definitely the best one. The reason being is that you can do whatever you want whenever you want. Sounds silly but the r6 and r5 force you to look at the screen to change almost anything. Sony you can set it forget it lol, takes a lot of the stress out of shooting when you have a camera like that. Also Sony uses terminology that is consistent throughout the camera world. servo is not a word used anywhere but canon lol. The last comment I’ll make is that Sony has been introducing future proof tech for a long time. Things like the 50 1.2 on Sony will be a better investment than the 50 1.2 on canon because of the lens’s focus system, linear motors are the future and if I spend $2k on a prime lens that element better not be moving forward and back like a dslr lens from 2007 lol. These are my personal opinions, but I did a lot of research before buying my camera, and the a7iv is easily the best camera out in that price range and Sony’s glass is secretly better than canon’s rf glass. lol hate it if you want but please look up comparison videos Sony is just eating competition right now.
Fair and as neutral as possible comparison, Thanks for that: I use Canon and entered the DSLR regime 17 years ago with a 60mm Macro lens and bought roughly 10 medium expensive lenses. The lenses kept me buying less and less expensive bodies - 3 x M50(ii) at the moment - which have great image and video quality if FullHD is sufficient. I use 98% adapted glass so finally the adapter sticks on the cameras. Only the EF-M 32 1.4 is important for me and has the right to be connected directly on the M50s. Planning to use the R7 soon with the - you mentioned that - filter adapter and maybe the Canon speed booster ... if Canon supports it on the R7.
I might try both of them, because they offer different workflows. I'm not a fan of anyone saying a camera menu is complicated, because then I just think they are kinda dim. I am sure a child over 10 years old can handle and master any camera menu out there, so I call that a non issue. Next, I will never have any build quality issues because I shoot with a full frame Pentax which is built better and has a better menu system than both the Canon and Sony. I do have Canon Pentax, and Sony cameras in different formats. I use both Mac and PCs, so I laugh when people get stuck on comparisons. See, we can shoot different formats and brands, and it does not have to cost much more than sticking to one single brand. We can get different products, take them outside, use them and maximize the best of all of them. I dabble in IT and music, so I probably have easily 30+ more brands of gear I use, and they all hold their own. I would never buy something like an R5,the EasyBake Oven, not buy recalled Nikon fodder, nor did I buy the A7iii,because I do not have toddler hands. I only respect brands that listen to and respect their consumers, so if you cannot have great quality control, you should not even be in business.
As for lenses, give it time. I wouldn't say going with an adapter for Canon EF>RF lenses is bad, those EF lenses are ridiculously great, but I get your point as to "native". As yes Sony has a bunch of 3rd party support, but also that came with time. The E mount has been around since 2011-ish??? The RF mount is barely 4 years old and SIGMA is workin on adaptability as we speak. Also Canon announced months ago and has released some not-so wallet breaking RF lenses. All things in time. I give Sony credit for jumpin on this mirrorless boat head of the game and making a staple. I give Canon credit for catchin up in so little time.
The Quality of your Videos deserve more attention thanks for This video as Someone who Shoots Since 2 years i use the Canon EOS 200d so in the Future when i have More experience ill Switch ❤
I switched from Canon to Panasonic, and even toyed with the Blackmagic series. Like you said, all cameras these days are stout. I wouldn’t say I’m a Sony fanb…okay, maybe I am a Sony fanboy, but I always have rooted for Canon since they were my first…and you always remember your first. Great video, as usual.
Finally found a review that is pure honesty ! I have both sony and canon. A7iii with 35mm Gmaster and Canon R6 with 28-70 f2 ! As a automotive photographer , both cameras are goods in stills . Except my r6 beats my a7iii coz of the vehicle tracking. IK theres some subject trackings but i found my r6 is pretty solid on Rolling shots ! Planning to upgrade my a7iii to a7iv as well! thanks you deserve more subs and likes !
I have the R5 and I'm perfectly happy with it. I have had no over heating at all but I don't record anything over 15 minutes so that is not a problem for me. I mainly focus on the photography side of the table and the pictures are excellent. Thanks for the video but at the end of the day no matter if you are a Sony or Canon shooter, both are great products and the will not let you down as the client will be happy either way.....
my dad shot with canon... i think the r8 will be my first ever camera...i love canon lens, their color science .. i love how Canon just announced that they are working with Sigma for 3rd party lenses coming their way ( NO LIMITATIONS!!!). by the time i get a canon camera i hope the lineup explodes!
The R5 and R6 may look very similar, but the former has a much higher build quality. I own an R5 and when I picked up an R6 in the shop, I could feel the difference immediately. As for the viewfinder, the A7S III's should be huge compared to the R6? When it comes to the lens ecosystem, I think the RF will have third party support within a year or two. Sony has long been criticised for its shallow selection of native lenses and weak third-party manufacturer support. But since 2018, it's been an endless avalanche of new lenses.
The short of it is pretty straight forward. The Sony bodies are simply the best when it comes to ease of use. Easier for someone just getting into photography. Canon's RF glass however is just on a completely different level. The difference is considerable in the hands of someone that knows what they're doing with it. The skill ceiling is higher with RF glass.
As an Apple, Sony lover, I really liked this video 🥰 I started with Canon and appreciate their features, but I’m sticking with Sony for now 😁 Getting my a7IV tomorrow after selling my a7III 😁 I am 97% photographer.
I’m a canon guy… was looking to upgrade to mirrorless and it was between the R5 and the A7IV… most the comparisons I saw said the same.. both are phenomenal cameras. The Sony is better if video is your main focus as a hybrid shooter… but I don’t do video so that was negligent to me. I shoot portrait so the colors were important to me. Ended up getting the R5 but still might get a Sony as a back up to retire my old 5D mark II. So far VERY happy with the R5 but interested in trying the Sony one of these days.
Thanks again Gangsta for this great review!!! I started with a Canon AE-1 before you were thought of back in 1981, meaning no disrespect. I was a semi pro for 10 years and shot with nothing but that AE-1 until the kids came, and I had to get a real job. Well after several more wives I married the perfect woman and on me birthday she let me dip my toe back into photography and I didn’t hesitate to get an RP. Just to start into digital and not film. Hell I used to have my own darkroom!!!!! Well yeah I know it’s not R6 or R5, but I’m blown away with this entry level camera, and it does more I can imagine!!!!! I’ve never had a Sony in my hand and I don’t know if I ever will, because just as you said the Sony is good for you right now, the Canon is “friendly” for me. I know it’s a pick sides kind of thing for everybody, and you’ve got a ton of money invested in the Sony system, and your treading water after losing your job. But somehow I hope you can shoot Canon for a year or so and then put out your opinions and ideas to let us know how it goes. Thanks again from another Terry!!! Peace and I’m skinny!!!!!!
This may have been the most helpful video I’ve seen on this topic and I hope both companies realize this by sending you more gear. Why? Because I a still torn on my decision but you definitely broke it down in a way I completely understand. Thank you SO much. Canon…Sony…keep supporting this guy. Breath of fresh air. Subbed.
Ha, I was just the opposite! I'd shot Canon for probably 25 years and made the jump to Sony and the A7IV about a month ago due to a recent interest in video. Canon seems to be getting left behind on that front, at least for now. I felt the A7IV really is the best hybrid camera out there and so far, zero regrets.
I've been thinking about getting the A7IV too, I'm currently on a Canon Rebel T6 and it was a great camera to learn on and begin on but I think I've hit the limit for what I can do with it.
@@Tanner_Teves My first interchangable lens camera was a Canon EOS Rebel T6 and I switched to a Sony a7 III last year. It was a mind-blowingly good experience getting to use the camera! I'm sure you'd have a blast on the a7 IV.
I would disagree. The canons offer higher bitrates in video quality plus all the recent cameras like the 5C or the newer ones actually offer a dedicated video OS. For video that’s a different level. For cheaper options the r7 just came out which has not recording limits. Another plus are the lenses. What people always forget is that the R system take any EF lens that man’s all first and third party lenses plus the new RF lenses. The RF ones are not cheap but probably the best lenses available on the market
White balance is simply perfect on Canon cameras. There are no variations like on Sony”s. Plus of that, on Canon there is white priority AWB, it works like a charm. No matter the changes in colors it will respect the pure white.
Hands down, the best product comparison I have seen anywhere. You really zeroed in on the pros and cons of both. As a new Canon owner, I must admit the the cost and selection of RF lenses should be carefully considered. I have viewed it as an investment for the future … but it has cost me up front.
Excellent commentary, etc. I'm sporting the Sony A7iv. So far, it is the best camera I've worked with. Color science wise, I have what I consider to be an unusual experience with Sony. When I shoot in SLog3, my skin tones turn out fine. I don't see any issues. But, when I shoot in S-Cinetone, my skin comes out more yellow. Which is strange to me because it's supposed to be more balanced. But, that's my experience. Speaking of Canon, had I not picked up the A7iv, I would seriously consider the new R7. Yes, it is a crop sensor, but what Canon has done with it in the R7 - 7K down sampled to 4K - including the ability to shoot in 10-bit 422 4K. all for $1,499, the R7 is a pretty nice camera. But, the A7iv is an amazing camera to me. And since I already have it, I won't be switching systems any time soon. And, as you pointed out, Sony has more lens choices - at better prices - than Canon has with the RF mount. I own all Sony FE lenses, and I think they hold their own pretty damn well. Anyway, thanks for dropping some great content. Cheers.
Just FYI in my experience adapted EF lenses perform better on EOS R cameras than they do on DSLRs. Even my old slow-focusing 85 1.2 stayed locked on at f/1.2 on the R5C. You lose absolutely nothing and it opens you up to the massive selection of EF lenses out there that often perform as well as the RF do for a lot less $. Plus if you get the adapter with a filter slot you can put a vari-nd in there, which is the closest thing you can get to built-in ND's on a mirrorless cam. I really loved the R5C besides battery life, but I love my A7S3 too so not sure if I'm gonna switch back to Canon yet.
I've had both systems, I just moved from Sony to canon because of that color difference in the pictures and ease of use of menu and the canon glasses are unbeatable even though they are expensive having said that both are great
I’m proud of you brother. Really proud of you 🏆. Both major players said “hey, we gon’ partner up with this guy!” That’s saying a lot. Congratulations Terry 🤛🏿. RIP to all lost in the recent mass casualty events in our nation 🇺🇸 🙏🏾.
Easily my favorite non-scripted video. Is there any chance of making such a comparison between Fx30 and R7? I think many creators will appreciate it. Thanks for the awesome content and authenticity.
You did an awesome job comparing these two units! I've always used the Apple/Android analogy myself and glad to hear you using it in a really practical example! I own the R6 currently but plan to move to the A7IV for a more diverse lens ecosystem and better video options!
Wouldn’t the R5C or the new R7 etc fit more? The canons usually have the better nitrates and video quality and there also seems to be not video limit or heating on those. Plus the lens selection is actually bigger as the systems are made to take any EF lens too
@@Seitenwerk It would absolutely solve me needing more video heavy capabilities but I'm more of an enthusiast that needs both photo/video capabilities and couldn't justify that much on a body alone.
Idk the camera u using for this video but the color adjustments are awesome. Do share your settings for the ppl of color along with the camera used. Thanks as always my guy.😉

New photographer here. Work event was nominated as photographer. Given a Nikon D5100 never used a DSLR watching 3-4 hours of training videos and practice. Found my hobby and now time to buy my own camera. Will be looking at the R6. Any further advice type of lense and camera for a beginner. Cheers
Pretty good review and I do like the analogy of Android v IOS ! The deciding factor is what glass do you currently own before buying Canon or Sony ! If you are a Canon dslr and have ef L glass then R6, R5, R7 is tye way forward, if you are new to photograph then Sony is a sound choice .
Thanks for the honest review bro. As a owner of the R5 and R6 I found your analysis to be spot on. Since the new R5C came out I decided not to get a Sony for video. I already have the RF lenses I need. Subned
Lots of valid points! But I think as far as lenses we have to keep in mind that the RF lens system is still REALLY NEW in comparison to Sony's E mount. Canon is still relatively new to the mirrorless game.
another great video, Terry! I just switched from Canon (5d II & 7d II) to Sony (a7iv). I've been in photography since 2010, but now I want to learn video. the inability of the R6 to be able to switch back and forth between photo & video, and the lack of 3rd party glass, made me switch to Sony and the a7iv. so, for me, as a new 'hybrid' shooter, Canon isn't there yet. Keep up the great work!🤘🏼
Disclaimer: I shoot still, almost exclusively. If I were to make a pie-chart of the time spent shooing photos and videos, you wouldn't be able to find the 'video' slice. I recently went from Sony(A7Riii) to Canon(R6), and I'm happy with the move. Sony has a huge selection of great lenses, and solid support from Sigma, Tamron, etc. I switched for two reasons: 1. I wanted 20fps burst and really killer auto-focus. In the Sony space, that means an A9, A9ii, or A1, which are all quite expensive($3300-$6500). On the Canon side, both the R6 and R5 fill that niche, and cost less($2500-$3900) 2. Ergonomics. Not just the menu(the pain is real, Sony menus are... meh on a good day) but, as Terry mentions, the way it feels in the hand. For me, having a larger, smoother grip was almost worth switching for me. I'm sure, in time, the lenses will come. I know there's rumblings of Sigma and Tamron getting on the RF mount, and I've heard the adapted EF mount lenses work almost perfectly, although I haven't tried any yet.
I've heard from some third party reps that Canon is being extra stubborn with releasing their patent and they're anticipating a long wait before any real announcement. Canon has been the one handling production set backs the best out of the all major players and they've generated a lot of hype with their new camera line up, until they start visibly losing out because of lack of third party support I think they can afford to hold out as long as they want.
As someone who is more interested in cameras and tech than who is actually someone using these things, this is a great video. But the important question is what you doing for your traps, my man? I think I was too distracted by those to pay attention for a good portion of the video, haha.
Wow, crazy! I didnt think it was possible for a photographer to have never tried a Canon camera before. Thats like a guitarist who's never played a Fender. Glad to see things are working out for you. Nice video.
great video bro! as a big user of both sony and canon in the field, i can agree with most of what you said. only area you lost me at is the build! for me, sony id leagues ahead of canon in build. the angular design is so much more appealing to me and calls back to those Spartan style film cameras. everything from the buttons and dials and all else feel much much better on sony. canons feel like toys to me, ESPECIALLY the DSLR bodies like the 5D series. the RF glass does feel amazing, i’ll give it that. but it’s awesome to hear different opinions. keep it up bro
The canon rf stm lenses are exceptionally priced and generally have great resolution except around their corners. For outdoor, landscape and not to dark photography I think you have to, because of these exceptionally priced lenses give canon the lense advantage! What do you say???
You found that the R6 was night and day compared to Sony when it comes to how it feels in the hand? Oh boy you should try Nikons. The R6 handles well and has a very good grip, but it can't hold a candle to the Nikon Z6 and Z7 imho. Think a Sony sized body, with a grip a tad bigger than the R6's. They feel astoundingly good in the hand, so much so that I was tempted to switch (then I saw that I couldn't pay for it) I really can't wait to see smaller Nikons like I dunno a Z6III or some shit that has the same CPU and algorithms as the Z9 and finally be competitive
Totally agree, moved from Canon to Sony and miss how much easier it was to manipulate the camera and change modes and settings quickly on the Canon... thinking about moving back
Man, dude gets a glimpse from Canon, he giving hella dubbs to Canon all of a sudden... I'm playin. Great video Terry! I almost bought the R6 as my first cam, but I decided to wait that extra year for the Sony a7IV. And I'm glad I did! It has never overheated on me, and I'm impressed with the footage I'm getting straight out of the camera. Plus, I wanted a smaller camera with less weight.
@@TerryWarfield I respect that! Your analogy of android and apple phones is pretty spot on too. I'm not gonna hate on Canon either. For the longest time I really thought about pulling the trigger on the R6. This was gonna be my first camera purchase so choosing a brand to build on wasn't easy. I knew once I made the decision, it's not easy to switch if I changed my mind. But yeah, I'm happy with what I've got. And not gonna lie, your channel was a big influence along with a few other youtubers.
Great comparison of systems. I don’t say that as a Canon fanboy (I am), but as someone who loves photography and good user experiences. Your insights are appreciated, and the Android/iPhone metaphor is perfect.
as a canon fanboy, this is such a great and interesting video compariosn. before the canon r or r6, i was seriously considering switching from my canon dslr to sony a7 series. but had no money so i had to hold out and the r6's been great for me. I agree, the canon price for lens are ridicilious, wish there was moer 3rd party like viltrox and samyang for rf mount. I only shoot jpeg and don't really colour grade that much in videos since they're just for fun home videos of my children, so that's a time saver with canon's colour science, keep up the great work, love this video , going to sub and watch all your videos!
New to your channel -- great video! I have a suggestion (not a criticism): I think viewers would really like chapters, especially for longer videos. Keep up the good work man
Love how you keep it real Bruh . I recently purchased the R6 , come from Nikon D800 . I’m not bashing Sony at all , as they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but unlike the Sony and Nikon D7ii , when I picked up the R6 in the store it felt perfect ergonomically. Wish it had a 30 meg sensor , but it is what it is
Incredible video mate! I've been a Sony shooter for years now and have always been interested in what it would be like to shoot with a canon. I picked up the A7IV when it launched an am absolutely in love with that camera. Keep up the great content!
I have a canon RP and a Sony A7iv and even tho the Rp is the lowest in the R class I still prefer taking pictures and hobby stuff with it while my Sony became my bigger/paid production camera ... I plan on upgrading the RP to a R6 after I get all the glass I currently need for the RF line before switching over the bodies ... great video man!
you will definitely get heat from sony fanboys for praising canon..........i m a canon user not a fanboy, i have some difference of opinion on your some comparisons.....but i appreciate your honesty and unbiasedness. you should have compared R5 to A7R4 instead of R6.

Great points, Terry.
I have an R6. Love it - but I'm more a Canon shooter by habit now. You're right about the glass options. However, if you can afford the RF glass that's all you'll ever ever want to use. The autofocus and stabilization are life-changing.
Since when do you do photography ?
Thank you for the honest review. Right on point! I switched from the Sony to the Canon system in April 2022 and can't be happier. Images rendered by the R5 and RF L glasses are magical. So much joy taking stills and movies now. Lightning fast eye AF and able to shoot sharp pictures at 1 sec hand held is a game changer.
Just out of curiosity, how are you able to get sharp photos with 1-sec handheld exposure? Doesn't seem like that would be physically possible even with steady hands.
@@joseph-the-seventh The image stabilizers of modern Canons (R5 and especially R7, R8, R6II and R3) are extremely effective
Where is the Camera profiles for the R5 in Lightroom?! Is it under browse, camera matching with the 6 options (standard, neutral, landscape etc)?
Didn’t know about some of those features. Thanks for adding this comment.
I'm a Canon fanboy. Especially with the new R5c. At the end of the day what wins me over is, ease of use and the image. Great observations bud.
Yes! Cameras nowadays are so good. Strong believer of upgrading your skills first vs upgrading gear!
Definitely
Great review man! I shoot both Sony a74 and canon r6 and they’re both incredibly good cameras but lately have been leaning towards selling the a74 and going r5 it’s so hard to match that canon color out of camera. Both cameras are a winner but after using both for long periods now I think canon just matches every scenario so well.
Unfortunately Canons good lens cost ridiculous amounts
unfortunately canon lens struggle with slowmo autofocus .@@Dhuxul9
dope review. an an R6 owner that absolutely loves his camera, and has spent time using the A74 have to agree with most of what you're saying.
Completely agree. The Canons are more inspiring to use. Didn’t think U could be honest
Sony has the glass , the discounts, ecosystem, smaller cameras.
Also way better dynamic range than canon
@@lewcehjitl3282 it’s actually not that much better on the R5C
Valid points. And I think the autofocus performance of the Sony's is still a bit better, especially tracking focus in video.
yeah, if you really are a video only shooter, the better option would have been the R5C which is a beast. However, there are some advantages to the R6 video where you don't get any cropping like you see on the Sony (4k60)

Great video Terry! As a Sony user, I have been very impressed by the recent lineup of Canon's mirrorless cameras!
Sony lenses on canon cameras? Anyone? Wish it were possible 🤷♂️
Canon does let you adjust any button and customize it to your liking as well. Great vid though. I just upgraded from DSLR to Mirrorles (Canon R5) and my god the difference was unimaginable. Totally subbing to your channel dude.
The r5 is a different beast than the r6. A lot of my complaints about the r6 don’t exist on the r5
For me personally, I would go with canon. My grandfather is a photographer and have used many different canon cameras, film and digital, so he got a bunch of older Ef glass. And the fact that all Ef glass works flawlessly with r systems (using adapters) is huge.
The main problem is, I can’t afford any of the systems :(
Great video! Happy I found your channel and you earned a new sub!
This was an excellent presentation. I just switched from Nikon to SONY so I won't be switching to Canon any time soon, but I do believe all you've said about the great qualities in each product line. It's great to have great choices.
Excellent video with some great analysis. Thank you Terry. 1st time viewer
Love the a7iv also. It’s a beast
@@justinhaller2055 awesome thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it!
@@justinhaller2055 no filters. I use a tripod and two flashes
My next camera might be the next blackmagic 6k pro (the next upgrade)
Your thoughts on that.
The Quality of your Videos deserve more attention thanks for This video as Someone who Shoots Since 2 years i use the Canon
EOS 200d so in the Future when i have More experience ill Switch ❤
I switched from Canon to Panasonic, and even toyed with the Blackmagic series. Like you said, all cameras these days are stout. I wouldn’t say I’m a Sony fanb…okay, maybe I am a Sony fanboy, but I always have rooted for Canon since they were my first…and you always remember your first. Great video, as usual.
As a long time Canon shooter I am very jealous of all of the Sony mirrorless glass and video features.
Eh, I like my rf lenses
this was one hell of a video , wow discussing two cameras and lenses and didn't miss a single beat. you just earned a sub my friend
Not even in the market for a new camera but still found your video informative and entertaining. Good stuff!
Love this guy! I could tell immediately he was a straight shooter. Keep it rollin’ Terry!
This is such an unbiased review, more vids to come! Good content brotha!
my dad shot with canon... i think the r8 will be my first ever camera...i love canon lens, their color science .. i love how Canon just announced that they are working with Sigma for 3rd party lenses coming their way ( NO LIMITATIONS!!!). by the time i get a canon camera i hope the lineup explodes!
Many reasons why I love this video, but the main one is the clear and honest view.
An honest man ! And in my opinion a very intelligent and accurate assessment of these two brands.
As an Apple, Sony lover, I really liked this video 🥰 I started with Canon and appreciate their features, but I’m sticking with Sony for now 😁 Getting my a7IV tomorrow after selling my a7III 😁 I am 97% photographer.
A7iv is a fantastic camera!!
Subbed.
Great video man! Keep doin’ yo thang!
Yeah I do find the AWB out of the canon more accurate
Great review & comparison, been rocking with the channel since the early days glad to see you getting the brand recognition you deserve
Cleveland is the city where we come from so run run
Hi is the dynamic rrange better on the A7s3 than the R5c?
Great video, Terry. Glad you tried out the R6. Loved hearing your perspective on a Canon camera.
Really enjoyed your review and energy. Great research as well
Idk the camera u using for this video but the color adjustments are awesome. Do share your settings for the ppl of color along with the camera used. Thanks as always my guy.😉
Thanks man. Check the description for “Terry’s Luts” I used my custom LUT “Drama” and about 30% opacity to give it a cooler filmic look. Link in the description
@@TerryWarfield rapid reply, omg 😳. You were filming from the Sony, right? RIGHT?!
Yep. A7siii
@@TerryWarfield yes! I loooove the C1-C4 settings along with its 4K and ACVHD hybrid settings. I almost died thinking this was just a 4K memory sucking camera, at first glimpse. Keep dem vids coming. Bro hugs 🫂
But what do I know I'm just a Canon fanboy LOL. Great video man! Let's link sometime.
another great video, Terry! Keep up the great work!🤘🏼
One of best reviews I gave ever seen. Thank you.
Excellent and honest video. This was very well done. Great work Terry, and thanks.😊👍
I switched for two reasons:
1. I wanted 20fps burst and really killer auto-focus. In the Sony space, that means an A9, A9ii, or A1, which are all quite expensive($3300-$6500). On the Canon side, both the R6 and R5 fill that niche, and cost less($2500-$3900)
They feel astoundingly good in the hand, so much so that I was tempted to switch (then I saw that I couldn't pay for it)
I really can't wait to see smaller Nikons like I dunno a Z6III or some shit that has the same CPU and algorithms as the Z9 and finally be competitive
I ain’t leaving Sony nooooo time soon but I’m also not scared to give credit where due!!
Excellent review. I am a canon user not the mirrorless but the 7D mark ii. Good comparison
New to your channel -- great video! I have a suggestion (not a criticism): I think viewers would really like chapters, especially for longer videos. Keep up the good work man
I enjoyed literally every second of this video
I appreciate the gems and dope video. Peace and Love Brooklyn NYC...
sigma has announced RF compatibility
When and where is the source about that?
I love the “up your level it’s not the camera “ mentality 🙇🏻
Thank you for down to earth view; Made my choice. Love your comparison.
I'm blowing away by the quality of the camera you are using to shoot this video Sony A7siii is the best
you will definitely get heat from sony fanboys for praising canon..........i m a canon user not a fanboy, i have some difference of opinion on your some comparisons.....but i appreciate your honesty and unbiasedness. you should have compared R5 to A7R4 instead of R6.
