    Awesome! We are in the process of converting a room to a safe room and appreciate the tips.
    We found a solid core exterior wood door for our indoor room but will consider lining it with the product or something. If we ever build a home we will use your ideas for sure. Thanks.

    Thank you for your comments and observations. We are not aware of any building codes requiring safe rooms in new construction. It has always been an option for the homeowner.

    The Fiberglass Armor Panels are very easy to cut and drill. All you need are carbide tipped blades for your circular, table or skill saw; and carbide drill bits. We can also water jet cut the panels for you at an additional fee.

    The chance of someone using a .50 cal round for an attack is very remote. In the 15 years that we have been doing Safe Rooms, we have never encountered this type of threat. For .50 cal ball you would need to use 1" Steel Armor Plate for .50 cal Armor Piercing you would need to use 1-1/2" Steel Armor Plate.

    when ordering the 1/2" plates (fiberglass), how hard are they to cut depending on the room you are installing them? i.e. can these sheets be cut with a standard skill saw with a diamond blade or do they have to be cut with some specialty tool?

    Bookshelves, file cabinets are a good way to hide the entrance into the safe room. We have other options that are available to the customer on confidential bases. MythBusters did a show on Phone Books and ballistics. We would NEVER suggest anything other than bullet resistant products that have been ballistic tested and have certification from a testing laboratory for use. It’s your life be safe in what you use for protection.

    Great video! Considering this safe room can penetrate several different calibers couldn't this also be used as a safe room for hurricanes? I'd like to try this but would like it to function for both but mainly hurricanes. Any suggestions?

      If you use the Fiberglass Armor Panels for a safe room, standard wall framing would be sufficient. For a hurricane shelter, the structure / framing would be the key element in the construction. Substantial framing, support and attachment to the foundation are critical considerations. I would suggest contacting a structural engineer . .

    We have never done a Bullet Resistant Window (Safe Window) in a safe room especially one that opens; you would leave yourself open to chemical, biological, attacks and the risk of a firebomb, or explosive being inserted into the open window. What we do is install a positive pressure air filtration system, keeping the air fresh and safe. A hidden security camera is the best way to go.

    Are there any areas that mandate safe rooms for new construction via housing codes?
    There should also be a market for "safe windows" that allow some ventilation, but are impenetrable to burglars.
    For a retrofit of existing space, the placement of bookshelves, file cabinets, or simply boxes filled with old phone books could be an alternative.

    Where do you get the mesh cage? I think I want to do that and put 3/4" plywood over it. I'm not worried about someone shooting through, just want to turn my gun room into a safe and add a steel door

    • @bulldogdirect1
      @bulldogdirect1  7 років тому

      You can purchase the steel mesh from us @ Bulldog Direct. The mesh and 3/4" plywood won't do much to stop someone from getting in. Might want to consider Steel Armor Plate. No power tools would defeat it, only a plasma cutter or torch.

    • @KMT15
      @KMT15 7 років тому +1

      bulldogdirect1 why would that not stop someone from getting in? What's the point of the mesh then? I'm not trying to build Fort Knox, but don't want someone to be able to just punch through the current drywall now to gain access

    • @bulldogdirect1
      @bulldogdirect1  7 років тому

      The wire mesh will help, but it's intended to slow someone down, that might have a hammer or crow bar. You are talking about a gun safe, which is much like a safe room, which has some type of armor panel behind the mesh. If you are only worried about someone just using a fist the mesh will work just fine. If you are concerned about someone with real interest in getting your stash then you will need added protection of more than 3/4" plywood.I hope this helps. you can also call bulldog direct with any other questions www.bulldogdirect.com

    Nothing beats specialty poured concrete reinforced with fiber and steel 1 foot thick, and and a high quality steel reinforced
    door. It's cheaper and much stronger and it will stop a .50 cal. bullet all day long.

    • @bulldogdirect1
      @bulldogdirect1  8 років тому +1

      Your average homeowner is never going to face a .50 Cal. , or need 12" thick reinforced concrete walls that would weigh thousands of pounds. Most attacks are with handguns up to .44 magnum .1/2" thick fiberglass, or 1/8" steel armor plate @ 5 lbs per sq ft. is a more realistic and cost effective solution.

    All the available building tech available. To sucker in people not really using their heads. But with enough money.
    There's no need to go to these lengths to build a "safe room/gun room". The trick is....hiding the "safe/gun room" from sight. What thieves can't see...they will walk right past. Doesn't take that much money or effort. Just a little forethought. Just need to hide the door behind some kind of removable paneling or a bookcase that functions as a "secret door". :)
    It's amazing how many people fail to consider this...buy 1500 pound safes and put them in plain sight. Might as well put a "STEAL ME" sign on it. Or they go to the lengths like in this video...get an ultra strong door...some even get a safe door put in the door frame...but it's STILL VISIBLE to any one walking by e.g. thieves. :)
    There's furniture makers even that have put in hidden compartments. :) Again..."what thieves can't see they wont think to break into..."...
