Who doesn't know Dick Dastardly?! I'm 14, born in 2003, and I know who he is! He was the best character from Dick Dastardly and his flying machines, and from the Wacky Racers. I suppose they are old cartoons, but surely they've so good that everyone's parents would've at least showed it to they're kids? That how I know about it.
The issues with that climbing sprite from the first Mario 4 are very similar to the issues with the climbing sprites from Super Mario Land II. When Super Mario Land II was made on the Game Boy, a transparent pixel looked identical to a white pixel, so when an inexperienced developer modified the climbing sprites before they printed the cartridges, they accidentally assigned transparent pixels instead of white pixels. No one noticed this as on a DMG-01 the sprite looked fine as transparent tiles would show up as the same green as the background layer, which is often the same shade of green as Mario’s sprite, and even when it was a different shade it would be hard to tell the difference in such a crap screen. But on a Game Boy Colour any colour could show through the transparent tiles, which makes the incorrect pixels really obvious. But on the NES, where Mario 4 was developed there is no excuse for such obvious errors as transparent pixels would show up as a different colour!
I feel really bad for growing up with these games. Since Famicom games were kinda expensive, bootleg carts were the best choice. I usually bought # in 1 carts.. but still nice video :)
