- In 2016, Seattle-based Northwest Tap Connection hip hop instructor Shakiah Danielson created a protest piece that debuted at the 2016 Groovement at Rainier Beach to speak out against police brutality. Northwest Tap Connection is a race a social justice studio located in the heart of south Seattle and has been committed for years to bridging the gap for children of color under the direction of Miss Melba Ayco.

The thing that is so heavy about this is that we know the song could be sung continuously, all year, and we would never run out of names. I'm glad it's as long as it is, but part of me wishes this dance was hours long. Days long. I'll just have to put it on repeat. What a beautiful and heartbreaking reflection.
I hate that this piece is still relevant, but I pray in spite of the tragedy you are still encouraged.
Shakiah Danielson 😢
The thing I find important is that its giving me a grade in class
From the first time I saw this, I have been waking up to this in my head. It's primal to African people, I think. I can't get it out of my head.
So many new names to be added. It is with a heavy heart that I undertake that task at a Stop The Violence rally this Saturday in Portland, Oregon. Y’all PRAY without ceasing!😔❤️🖤💚🙏🏾
This is a war cry. Powerful.💜
When the ancestors speak!
Thank you to everybody who has viewed and shared this piece. We hope you all are encouraged. Stay safe and be blessed. Please see the link in the description to donate and help keep Northwest Tap Connection open in spite of COVID!
You made me research black tap dancers so thank you sis. Art is revolutionary. #BLM
@@anonymoususer8872 Thank you for caring enough to look!
@@mzshakiahmc It's the least I could do. I wish I could book y'all.
This was a sign and a wonder! Sharing it everywhere I can. I was moved to tears with this great work you are doing with these young people. We will not forget the victims of unspeakable police brutality. We will honor their memories and fight for justice in this country! This is our fight song!!!
it's fantastic - I'm inspired! wow wow wow - stay healthy stay safe stay tapping
Our culture is so powerful ❤️✊🏾
I could not stop my tears with this! Seeing all of the beautiful generations joining in to memorialize TOO MANY sons and daughters that have been lost!! It was joyful and mournful all at once. Just wow...
thank you - bringing back TAP!!! Social justice tap.
I didn't realize this video was a few years old! Wow!! Well, I cried and danced with them. Every emotional! 😍❤ Honor to our people. ✊🏽
Beautiful!!!! I felt a spiritual roar deep in my soul after watching and hearing this. Have you ever heard a Lion Roar? This is what it sounds like to me! My spirit joined in on the Tap. Thank you for this!🙌
Praise and justice call. The ancestors came down.
THIS! Thank you!!!! Powerful. I have goosebumps. ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
Shared this on my Facebook and everyone is going crazy over it!!!! This POWERFUL AND IMPACTFUL!! I’m amazed and glad to be black!!
Easily the most powerful thing I've seen in a while. The historic music tones from 1800's plantation slavery, the raw emotion of both the young and the old, the passion of the single dancers, the community of the group, the cadence of the tapping that it goes on and on and on in a loop over and over. I'm sad for this race. An entire race of people.
One of the most power tributes I've ever witnessed. So proud! For those who love this, please donate. WE MUST keep this dance studio open. Much love!
One of the most powerful memorials I've ever seen for those who have lost their lives to systemic racism. Thank you for this! This should be archived in the Smithsonian Museum. #imjussayin 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Lady Light 💡 Yes!!!
I concur!
Amen!
@@csalsera Absolutely! This is My Memorial Day - very few performances have brought me to tears, over and over, without fail.

Good job Seattle, much love from Illinois!! #BLM
I feel something in my spirit when I watch this! I have to get up and sing and move too. Then it turns to tears. Saddened just to hear so many names of blacks who were killed 😢
I hate that it took 3 years for YT to recommend this to me, but I was instantly blessed by watching it. I loved every second ✊🏾🖤
This made me howl and I don’t know where it came from! It also made me reach from my beloved tap shoes and join in!
I needed this release. We all needed this! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾💕💕💕

This is one of my favorite videos to watch. It evokes so much emotion. Absolutely powerful.
Dear Lord, may you cover each and every one of these beautiful brown beings. I am truly moved and touched by this Amen
SAY A NAME - CHARLENNA LYLES- SEATTLE...I loved when the African dance instructor gave us that real African flavor... powerful dance piece and dancers!! Each name a life taken. They remind US it's gruesome times again for black families. Whats really going on today to our black people and children of color with the JUST-US SYSTEM. Take a future, Take a life, Take generations.
This is just absolutely rivoting!!!! Thank you Black people!! ✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾💃🏽💃🏽💃🏽
The tribal vibration is so high in this video! Got me chanting "hellyoutalmbout"
This is so powerful. It brought me to tears. I felt every step and every name called. Passionate memorial and I plan to share it 🙏🏽♥️
This is so awesome. It is emotional. It is powerful. God put something so great in us that so many envy. We must remember that we were created in the image of God, and he loves us. Our culture and heritage is thunderous and captivating. This is US!
Tears in my eyes..And the list grows with each passing day. #NoFuknMore
Be encouraged
I have never before cried watching dance. This is heart wrenching. It is not enough that I say anti black racism has to stop. But what can I do as a while woman of privilege?
Oh my goodness!! Loved this, the energy, creative vibe, confident attitude and the Powerful message, the range of ages , just BLACKNIFICANT
I just saw this on Facebook and Instagram and it is trending again in 2020. Such a powerful song and beautiful dancing, but I can’t help to be sad because this is still our reality 5 years later. 😞
the energy and power and integrity of these people with their kids is beyond beautiful and inspiring. keep sayin their names.
I cannot stop watching this video
I feel you! Same here.
@@lbamm Appreciate you both
Can’t tell you how many times I have watched this. I absolutely LOVE this, feel every beat/tap/movement of this deep in my soul like it was imprinted in the recesses of my ancestral genetic makeup!! Every single performer perfectly enhanced this song. Sending a special shoutout to the youngest and oldest dancers.❣️❣️❣️❣️❣️
Thank you so much for viewing!!! Be encouraged sis!
Speaking with my friend and Country Manager from Africa, she says that this video is POWERFUL. That it is a Universal African Ritualistic Dance that opens the gateways for the spirits of the dead to come through the open semi-circle. BUT, the the dance is not complete until the ELDERS close the circle at the end of the dance to release the spirits to be FREE. This video does not show that the ELDERS were present, therefore the spirits of those lost are among us searching for a way to be released to FREEDOM. Please give a part 2 with the ELDERS to send the souls to FREEDOM. Perhaps we need a ZOOM DANCE session that will bring us all together and release their souls to FREEDOM. We are POWERFUL Beyond MEASURE!!!
yeah we dont believe in the antcestors n stuff bo thanks
All this beauty. I love my people so much. I'm challenging myself to treat all my people with love. No anger. We gone make it! This is just beautiful.
Thank you so much we have to remember our brothers and sisters! May they never be forgotten!
The voice at 5:30 broke my heart
Great performance. I can’t stop listening
It makes me so proud. I have a daughter that has tapped all her life.. She's taught her daughters. Her Dad is a hip hop dancer.. Me, I just dance. But, I watched this through tears. But. I feel so much pride. To have those who are sworn to up hold their laws, break them in such a heinous way.. Says a lot about them, their laws and their characters.. Are we that powerful, that the mere sight of us, invoke fear?
A friend sent me this video and asked me what I felt, this is my response... Had to watch it twice!! This is STRONG! The heavy drum beat (like my heart right now) sound like an African army going to war - the Orisha for war is at the forefront leading his charge: feel that fighting spirit, hear the feet marching in unison, whilst overseen by the real trilogy:- ANCESTORS the CREATOR the UNIVERSE! The REAL spirit of Wakanda!! Im covered in Goose bumps!!
the dancing, the memorial, everything about this is so powerful. too many names & loved ones lost. mothers, fathers, sons & daughters. NEVER FORGOTTEN
do you mind if I share this with my (mostly white) church? I want them to hear that song, hear their names, and see all the power, history, beauty and grief here in your dancing, out here in the open
Please feel free - This piece has been used to help facilitate several community discussions. This piece was also used to create a short film that circulated several film festivals. Either one of them are effective for discussion.
Please prepare yourself though in case the receptivity isn't there. This is a very deep seeded issue.
May I use this for a Diversity event my university is having?
Perhaps when this pandemic is over we may have the group live on campus.
@@DrLoriMitchell Thank you for asking, and please feel free - we are honored to have a part in helping with what is taking place on your campus. Please also share the donation link if you can to continue to keep the doors open as well. God Bless.
I just watched this again & I can’t stop the tears bravo y’all!
I have watched it 4 times already and it is JUST AS POWERFUL every time! Wow! Tears!
Yes talk to the heaven...LET THE COSMOS THROUGH"..ONE LOVE ❤✊
OMG!!! This was one of the most beautiful display of dance in it's finest essencethat I've seen in a LONG time!!!! The inter-generational piece topped it for me! Just saw this today and will be passing it on to not only fellow dancers, but all that I know! This video made my day and changed my world. Much Love, Thanks Andrea

Alleleuia! That these beloved brothers and sisters should bring such honor to precious souls departed from our earthly family much too soon! We have watched and will remember as well, here in our humble villages nestled in the heart of many mountains of central Pennsylvania. Bless-ed Be!!!
Amen!! Be encouraged!
Spiritually POWERFUL! My Heart 🖤 My Voice 🗣 My Prayers 🤲🏽🤲🏾🤲🏿 Stands Strong 💪🏽 with All the Mother’s, Father’s, Family Members and Friends of Our MURDERED Brothers and Sisters GOD BLESS Our People #STOPKILLINGUS
Explosive beauty. I’m so heartbroken that names keep being added to the list of souls lost to racist violence, and yet art like this gives me hope. I’m full of gratitude. Keep dancing, keep singing, keep saying the names.
Its disgusting that names continue to be added, but young people have a way of putting the future back in front of our faces. Thank you for watching.
I can't stop watching this video! I just love the way they put their spirit into every movement of their feet..
ASÉ!!! Say their names...❤️🖤💚
Absolutely,Amazing, Beautiful and Powerful!!! Brought tears to my eyes to see this ,thanks for sharing!!!
Every time I come back to this video I weep. It's beautiful and terrible. It's holy. I'm overcome. Thank you, and I'm sorry. I won't stop listening.
I would to see you guys in person......Chicago STANDS WITH YOU ALL.....THANK YOU
We love yall! Be encouraged!
Just discovering this and have been sharing it everywhere! Bless you all for this powerful performance! Would love another since the list has grown so much. 😔 Just BEAUTIFUL!! ✊🏾❤️
God bless them, omg it feels my heart !!!! We are Kings N Queens !!!!
This piece of performance art was SO moving and powerful! The use of the talent and passion these dancers possess being put forth to honor the victims in this tribute is seen and felt through the screen in all their glory. I enjoyed the elements of synchronization that underscore the unity of the Black Lives Matter movement as a social movement against police brutality. Seeing multiple generations of dancers showcases how this is an issue that affects members of all ages of the Black community and how the conversation needs to be had at every level due to its importance. Also, the babies are too precious. Including the #sayhername aspect of the piece is truly imperative because so many times Black women are left behind or forgotten when considering police brutality, even though they are targeted at disproportionately higher rates due to the intersection of gender and race. The studio did an amazing job with this piece and the message it conveys.
Every time I watch this it brings me to tears. So powerful! So amazing! So proud to be Black!
I recognize familiar faces. Sending love. This is amazing! 💚💙💜🤎🖤🤍💟
Simply beautiful my people
this is beautiful, powerful and what we need...
amazin. Charleena Lyles, say her name!!! June 18 2017 Seattle mayor Ed Murray reacted quickly to the killing of Charleena Lyles, announcing his verdict that same day: It is "a tragedy for all involved." The meaning of these words is that no police can be held
responsible for this death, as they too were just victims of the
tragedy. THIS VERDICT IS NOT ACCEPTABLE. Charleena Lyles, say her
name!!! RefuseFascism.org #BlackLivesMatter #SayHerName #StopPoliceMurder #FTP #NoFascistUSA #ENOUGH #WakeTheFuckUp #Seattle #CharleenaLyles
The TALENT! SAY HIS NAME! SAY HER NAME!
I got chills!!
wow this touched my heart, very moving
This is very beautiful and moving.
Incredible energy and finesse! Love ❤️ this.
Absolutely stunning!
Wow. So powerful and magnificent. This literally gave me chills. #SayHisName #SayHerName #BlackLivesMatter
This is a beautiful tribute and the tears won't stop flowing
The amount of passion and emotion portrayed in this is absolutely amazing! I couldn't look away for even a second. This demonstrated another form of coming together as a community and the multiple generations dancing in solidarity was beautiful to see. It shows that the community is hurting but these people's names will never be forgotten. They will forever be remembered.
This just touches your spirit! I love the message and seeing the multiple generations!
Yes 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
