I saw an interview of both of them about the time this movie premiered. Each was full of praise to the other. Baryshnikov commented that learning Hines' style was very hard for him. He said that the tap and jazz styles required a relaxed foot and loosened spine and that the focus came mostly from the thighs--a complete opposite of the training he'd had all his life. Kudos to both for absorbing enough from each other to produce this amazing dance.
Rereading what I wrote brought back a long-forgotten memory of another two utterly dissimilar artists who managed to create a bit of magic, this time from television. Luciano Pavarotti, reigning king of opera enthusiastically agreed to spend some time with one of country music's legends, Loretta Lynn. Loretta, for her part, was shy and absolutely terrified of performing in front of the elegant and sophisticated operatic giant, but Pavoratti was almost as famous for his charm as he was for his soaring voice and he coaxed a couple of songs out of her, my favorite being the evocative and touching "Pregnant again", beautifully shown in part three of the three part sequence. Regrettably, I can't find the whole thing, only bits, none of which feature Pavarotti singing. But watch him melt in Part 3. But with every step he took towards the stage, power grew in him. Stunning. Davis did an unplanned short routine. Hines got down and kissed his feet! As Davis walked back to his seat, the power left him. It was immensely touching.

Absolutely. A variation on the "backwards and in high heels" trope re: ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Unseen choreography at work. Probably no high heels, tho!
This scene showcases just how great both of them are. It's not easy for a ballet dancer to branch out so fluidly, but Baryshnikov does it so well. And Hines was one of the best tap dancers at this time, and you can see it here. They mesh so perfectly, I love this movie!
@@YahooMurray I saw him also, dancing with the Bolshoi Ballet. Exactly as you said- it's like he floated down to the ground slower than everybody else. It was an amazing thing to see.
Forgive me Lord, but all I could see was Baryshnikov (and, I'm ashamed to say, that I thought that whoever suggested this to Gregory Hines ((who in any other setting, I love)) was no friend).
Interesting to watch the different interpretations of the same moves. Baryshnikov always points his toes and fingers and focuses on getting his extremities gracefully outlined. Hines is more centered in his power, lands more squarely on his heels instead of toes, focuses on his hips and chest and personal core strength. Both are beautiful and elegant, but very different in their subtleties.
Marialla They somewhat remind me of the comparisons between Astaire and Kelly. One of the main differences I’ve read about said that Astaire’s center of gravity was higher, as is often the case with shorter people, and Kelly’s was lower. I can see that in all the close to the ground moves, spins, etc, which Kelly did, while Astaire stretched up more often. That also accentuates the difference in what was said to be Astaire’s more elegant style, and Kelly’s more athletic style.
Hines is more loose, while Baryshnikov is more structured. Like two lead guitar players where one is classically trained and the other is all feel. Both achieve the desired outcome.
Two totally different dance styles but synergized so homogeneously. Gregory Hines is a "tap" dancer & of course, Baryshnikov, the preeminent ballet dancer in his prime. The distinctions you noted supports both their unique dance styles.
Two of the most, in my opinion, of the amazing dancers of the time. I never got tired of watching Hines, power and grace, and Baryshnikov, well he just floats over the floor.
Baryshnikov has perfection: every move stopped at any second is picture-worthy gracious. Hynes is excellent but he looks a bit plain next to Baryshnikov. :)
Oh My Word!! Just this short clip really shows how good a dancer they both are. This is fantastic! The world lost a truly great talent when Gregory Hines passed away in 2003 at the too-young age of 57. Gregory, you are missed 😢😢😢

But here, the two of them side by side , both with the desire to share that satisfaction what compels the a single movement [dance] so...in this the two are equals. Beautiful.... Just perfect !
Ballet is upper body lift with the diaphragm, jazz is low weighted, weight on thighs, flexed knees, feet in contact with floor. What you see are two different dance techniques. Both are sublime in their individual styles. The very best of the living dancers in my humble opinion.
A wonderful description of the styles. The tight and precise classic ballet moves and the loose-limbed, deceptively casual and elegant tap..I love them both. This was one of my favorite movies growing up...
Absolutely a brilliant movie and the fusing of two genres. Gregory with his lose emotional interpretation of dance and Mikhail with his expertise in the technical aspect of dance. You can certainly see the years of service in Mikhail's moves and it's a wonder to watch. Gregory has the grace of some of the greats that went before him...the Fred Astaires and undoubtedly his inspiration, the legendary Tap dancer Teddy Hale. So beautiful to watch
Smooth as silk in some places - tight tight tight in others. Wow! The fluidity and sheer grace. Such a contrast in stylistic presentation, but equal nonetheless. Exceptional dancers at the peak of their game. Love it.
I never get tired of this dance. Over and over again for years I come and watch. I'll never tire of it. I remember the first time I saw it. They are legends.
It's so great seeing two incredibly talented dancers demonstrating the differences and the similarities of dance styles. Tap and ballet are so different, but both require extreme control. I watch this movie regularly for all the dance scenes. Love it.
Actually this straight, 65 year old guy completely understands it: Male panache, utmost confidence, smooth as a lion stalking its prey, yet with grace.
+mhks68 Exactly. One need to realize that there is a difference in hoofing/tap dance, and dancing. Greggory was a hoofer/tap dancer, and he showed that he could obviously dance, hence the movie.
I remember when previews of this movie first hit the screen. I heard people making so many "yougottabekidding" comments . . . and then the movie was released . . . and all those people who thought that Hines' Tap couldn't match Baryshnikov, or that Baryshnikov's Ballet would look too "delicate" next to Hines . . . had to prop their gaping mouths shut with both hands. They were MAGNIFICENT
Yes! I loved this movie as a kid. I never really understood why ADULTS were bad mouthing the idea of two dancers from different training not only dancing well together but, complimenting each other.
@@badkitty4922 Those fools were obviously clueless fools...Fred Astaire & Gene Kelly had differing styles somewhat like Hines & Baryshnikov (looser vs more balletic), & nobody with any sense complained about those two dancing duets. Lotta idjits in the world! Clearly, you had more sense as a kid than the adults!
If you had told me there was a dance scene in a movie that was a perfect blend of 80s soft rock, ballet and tap, I'd have said, "I'll believe it when I see it." Well, I believe it now.
My eyes used to be on Mikhail, but then it changed. Gregory has an easiness about him that I have learned to appreciate. Of course, every step Mikhail takes is measured and perfect, but it is not relaxed. He is the perfect ballet dancer, and Gregory is the perfect tap and modern dancer.
Stopped counting whow many times I have been watching and analysing and of course dying for this scene - Mihhail highest diszipline and on top of it most coolness at the moments to freeze- incredibele change from classic ballett to dancing so cool and relaxed…… cant stop watching it
I fell in love with Mikhail Baryshnikov the second that I saw this movie (back in the 80s). This is one of my favorite scenes in film just because it put two amazing dancers with completely different backgrounds together and IT WORKS!
I took my little son to this...and for his 9th birthday took him to see Hines live and another time to Baryshnikov and Nureyev and Tharpe and Graham. All live and enthralling. Such beautiful days ..long gone. 💔
Gregory Hines always made dancing look so easy, that I thought I could do it too. Mikhail Baryshnikov made dancing look so magical, that I knew I needed some dance lessons. 😄
Always magical. Two talented, disciplined, generous artists who know they are great enough to share the stage in a way that honors both performers and does not pander to a Hollywood audience! This is amazing
Gregory Hines like a lot of those from his generation could do a lot of things exceptionally well. His death was a shock, but I still think about how talented he was.
@RayJ-HT He was the last of the greats in the genre of Tap Dance ~ He is missed, a beautiful and talented Man ~ Like to think of him Dancing Where Angels Trod ~ !
He was one of my heroes growing up. A lot of little girls want to take ballet (nothing wrong with ballet but it wasn't my interest). I want to learn to tap dance the way he could because I looked up to him so much. But of course I got pushed more towards ballet so I know a little about both styles and what I love about this movie is they each are such clear masters of their crafts while also depicting the act of learning from each other, and that's a really hard thing to do.
Remember seeing in the theatre. Great dancing. Of course, Baryshnikov….and Gregory Hines was so talented. Loved his comedic timing in Will and Grace. Gone too soon. Was also impressed by the elegant, graceful Russian ballerina. Years later, would realize it was Helen Mirren. So many great stars in this movie.
It is mesmerizing to watch Baryshnikov. This video demonstrates all the grace, strength, power and versatility of ballet. Hines is good in his own genre, BUT Mikhail is all in all to me.
I love Baryshnikov because he is open minded about dance, art & music at all levels of the spectrum! Mikhail Baryshnikov is a national treasure & we are lucky to see Gregory Hines & Mikhail Baryshnikov dance for us! God Bless Them! 🙏
This is absolutely my favorite dance sequence ever! After i saw the movie (years before UA-cam) I searched high ad low until I found it on tape! Watching those two men doing the exact same steps shows their training. Baryshnikov had the smoothness of ballet movement, while Hines was more street. I love watching it over and over! As a former student of dance, I agree.
A wonderful description of the styles. The tight and precise classic ballet moves and the loose-limbed, deceptively casual and elegant tap..I love them both. This was one of my favorite movies growing up...
As a former student of dance it is in the strength of your legs with upper body for balance and expression.
Having taken both, I can attest that they are complete opposites.
Except Gregory Hines passed in 2003 from liver cancer.
Brilliant! I have seen Barishnikov many times but unfort. never saw Gregory. Both Major talents, Larger than Life. ❤😮
Same. And the scene looks like it was filmed today -- other than the use of a cassette and the old TV the KGB guy has.
It's so great seeing two incredibly talented dancers demonstrating the differences and the similarities of dance styles. Tap and ballet are so different, but both require extreme control. I watch this movie regularly for all the dance scenes. Love it.
Two geniuses of dance, in their own metiers. A pleasure to watch and rewatch.
definitely. so sensual too. its like watching erotica...i know the guys wont understand..:)
Actually this straight, 65 year old guy completely understands it: Male panache, utmost confidence, smooth as a lion stalking its prey, yet with grace.
Gregory was a genius Mikhail was a GOD!!!
@@Zeppolino100 you sir are a poet. Succinctly written, Be well. 🇨🇦
And rewatch, and rewatch, you get it❤️❤️😺😸
Gregory Hines was so light on his feet, he seems to float at times. Always love this dance scene.
Two of the greatest dancers of all time. Different genre's, different worlds, same heart. Magnificent.
Well said!
Amen
There's no question Gregory Hines could dance, but Baryshnikov was pure poetry in motion.
one did it for fun the other...it was his life!!
+mhks68 Exactly. One need to realize that there is a difference in hoofing/tap dance, and dancing. Greggory was a hoofer/tap dancer, and he showed that he could obviously dance, hence the movie.
Oh yeah....Gregory Hines could sing too
his father was a dancer too?
Gregory Hines came from a very talented family.
@@kellyhoward6941 awww, thanks, sweetie! I'm a grown woman now, and it STILL happens, lol.😅😘❤👍
@@badkitty4922 You go!
You hit the nail,baby!
of course both of them great dancers. Baryshnikov is genius and Gregory is just great
Baryshnikov just floats no matter what he does
..yes! he is amazing!!
It’s like he exists in some other gravity.
Barishnikov has an excellent balance of movement..
That’s Russian ballet school,bitches...
In Seven Brides for Seven Brothers you can tell the ballet dancer cuz he seems to float also.
The most beautiful moment. Watching these two artist together gives me chills.🥰
In my 40's and still gotta come and check Gregory Hines dancing, it struck me as a kid his masculine, cool, jazzy style, rest in peace Gregory ✝️
Глаз не оторвать от танца. Барышников классно тануюцует.
Аж дух захватывает!
I can never tire of watching Mikhail Baryshnikov dance!
Hello Deborah, How are you doing
I really miss Greg Hines. He was an incredible dancer.
Me too.!
Look at footage of Fred Astaire if you want to see the best.
would have loved to see the three of them dance together.
Don't forget Gene Kelly! He was amazing.
So blessed to have seen Baryshnikov perform in person. He is extraordinary.
Спасибо, ничего не может быть прекраснее красиво исполненных танцев.
Это шедеврально!!!!!!!! Я по русски!!!! Он русский,он шедевр......
Oh my goodness l. That was so good. Amazing to watch the two different disciples merge .
Михаил, конечно, бесподобен! Завораживающее зрелище! Браво!
Чудовий танок,поєднання та естетичність,переглядаю з великим задоволенням!!!
Thus, "So You Think You Can Dance"
me too. my friend whom i went to watch this movie with , couldnt stop talking about it . i love this movie too...
Awesome so beautiful
scrappinkar1 Same here!!
I had a huge crush on him after I saw this movie in college. In the 80’s.
Барышников даже в мелочах остается экстра балетным. Одно удовольствие смотреть на двух абсолютно разных мужчин в одном танце.
I took my little son to this...and for his 9th birthday took him to see Hines live and another time to Baryshnikov and Nureyev and Tharpe and Graham. All live and enthralling.
Such beautiful days ..long gone. 💔
От Барышникова глаз не оторвать, ни миллиметра лишнего движения, гениально!
It's interesting that you say that, because I can't take my eyes off Gregory Hines.
I agree !
Между ними это день и ночь.
@@dancinggiraffe6058 me too
I'm so glad this was posted. It's a wonderful blessing to see these two wonderful dancers together. I could watch this over and over again!
Hello Kate, How are you doing
I can never take my eyes off Gregory Hines when I watch this. He is amazing.
Loved both ...met Mikhail Baryshnikov at party i 2as catering shortly after this movie came out ..loved watching him dance .
Gregory Hines is my all time favorite tap dancer and he was a good actor too. I miss him.
Me too...: (
Me too... so much.
Username6101947: Did you know he could also sing? You can hear a couple of songs of his on UA-cam. Just type in 'Hines Hines & Dad'.
Have you see the Nicholas Brothers from back in the day? Omg. Gotta see them if you haven’t. ♥️
Me too!
And after all that learning, Baryshnikov makes it look so easy, like he'd been doing this all his life. Beautiful work.
Gregory Hines like a lot of those from his generation could do a lot of things exceptionally well. His death was a shock, but I still think about how talented he was.
I sure miss him even to this day. Amazing to watch...
Loved GH! So gorgeous to watch!
@RayJ-HT He was the last of the greats in the genre of Tap Dance ~ He is missed, a beautiful and talented Man ~ Like to think of him Dancing Where Angels Trod ~ !
It's always sad when talented people die. The world is diminished by the loss of true talent.
Couldn't keep my eyes off of Misha. Pure grace.
Обожаю этот фильм !!!
I am just astounded how they dance in sync with each other! They have so much power, yet grace and control with their movements. Wow!
They were both fantastic!!
A brilliant classical dancer, Barishnikov and a dancer like Gregory Hines...they are like no other!
Magnificent and Majestic !!❤❤❤
You can see the difference in their background! Neither one is better than the other ! It's just uniquely their own!!
Classic scene. I wish people like this still existed.
Great movie and great dance scene. Baryshnikov had incredible body control, strength and flow, And Hinds moved fluidly
I remembered when I saw this. I was mesmerized. The talent was exquisite
What a great time for movies.. thanks for this reminder of Gregory Hines man! He doesn't get enough praise.
Прекрасен и великолепен! Тут нечего добавить и невозможно опровергнуть!
Браво!!!!!
One of my all time favorite movies! Gregory Hines & Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing together; doesn't get much better than that! Thanks for sharing!
