Certainly one of the most important matches of Guga's career. Muster was his toughest opponent this whole tournament, well the toughest opponent you could possibly face on clay in the mid 90s overall, especially in Bo5 Matches, and this match is in the end what made him the player he went on to be.
I love Guga but I'm a bigger Pete Sampras fan and and when he won the 1st US Open in 1990 he beat 4 number ones in a row. Becker Lendal McEnroe and Agassi in the final !
Some people often forget/are not aware how great some tennis players were before The Big Three. It's almost as if only The Big Three know how to play first-class tennis. Gustavo Kuerten was on the same level as any of the Big Three, on clay that is, although, to be honest, probably not on Nadal's best level on clay.

Rubbish. KUERTEN won cos he started using Luxilon strings first and he never got past a 1/4 final in any of the other 3 slams. He is nowhere near the greats

I remember being a kid and watching this match, I don't know why I was drawn to watch it. I really like Guga, maybe his clothes and style made me cheer for him, a few years later I understood that it was purely charisma, he was the most charismatic tennis player for me. Great backhand, I only saw Wawrinka as someone at the same level of backhand. I didn't remember the match being so hard. I remember well the 2001 final because I was older... anyway, I miss Guga.

Court nº1 has been removed since but it was the best ever. Even bottom price seat holders could stand at the rail just behind the players. Guga sooo deserved this win, he was one of the most charismatic players to grace the French Open winner list

If prime Djokovic lost to Wawrinka, Guga could have beaten him too, i'm pretty sure. Guga was insane on clay and he could give Nadal a lot of trouble because he could take his monstrous backhand on the rise without any trouble and would suffer less from Nadal's extreme forehand spin. But problably Nadal would still win more in the H2H, because he is the king of clay.

An Inside Scoop: Muster was complaining about the Stringing Weight of his rackets, didnt feel comfortable, so for the 5th set he ordererd new strung rackets, but in the end never did use them. I talked to his old stringer and he still thinks, it was a big fault of Muster continuing to play with the softer strung Rackets.
Muster was more solid from the baseline than even Guga but as soon as Guga uses variety like drop shots or attacks the net muster struggles. Also I notice muster has a better forehand but Guga has a clearly better backhand.
Nadal volleys a million times better than what Muster used to, has a more powerful forehand, wasn't a natural lefty which is why his backhand can flick winners when stretched, knows when to come forward, and uses the entire court better than Muster.
