I just bought the Cabela's Deluxe Vise kit yesterday. So far I have tied 3 feathered trebles, but I want to buy more supplies and tie some Crappie jigs too.

Thank you very much Carl, it is always a pleasure to see you here!!!!! I no longer sell jigs and if you want to replicate this and sell it then feel free. I put these out here for people to see so there is no crime in doing that. I would appreciate if you let your customers know where you got it from but it isn't necessary...LOL!! I'm just happy you like it enough to give it a try, it may not be pretty but it does catch fish!!!
Greetings from central Jersey. Awesome jig!! I really don’t fly fish much anymore but I make a lot of my own jigs. This shows you don’t have to be a fly fishermen to own a vice and materiel. You have some very nice easy patterns Thank You!
Something that seems to work for me when I want to double wrap the chenille I tie it in at the head and wrap to the tail and then back to the head. This keeps it from rolling and also leaves the bobbin at the head to whip it.
@@smalljaw I actually tried the Dollar Tree chenille (just chenille) 2 days ago and I been finding I need to double wrap it as it's not as dense....but for 1.25 for 65yds sure beats the 5 yds from "fly" shops.
After using the jigs I made with this I have found they're not very durable. The chenille sheds pretty easy and after 5-6 fish it's looking pretty ragged. But for $1.25 I can make a bunch of these and grab a new one after 10 fish and save the old one to retie another day.Def not jig material I want to use on jigs I'll be selling.
Yep, I see squirrels dead in the road and I've been tempted to stop and chop off the tail. I've been told you can cover the tail with all purpose corn meal. Supposed to let set out (obviously not in your house) covered for several more weeks and the corn meal absorbs the fluids and the odor, as well. Hmm, I said I was tempted not that I was going to do it.
Yes Salt and borax Old school .I have collected hundreds of deer tails that way deboned and treated them to make my salt water jigs. I mostly fresh water fish now but still get people asking me to make SW jigs for them.
Thank you Kevin!!! I powder paint my jig heads, look up powder painting jigs and you'll find videos that are much better than what I can do. My camera has terrible white balance and the videos are either too dark or very bright to the point you can't see but I'm working on a new camera so that kind of stuff is in the works.
Great pattern as always. Really look forward to a smalljaw lesson on anything, it's always a learning experience. Thanks, glad to see you are staying well. 513
Sorry about my spelling sometimes I'm a dumb as an earthworm but I think you get the gist of it like the part where I said I am not God bless talk to you naive I do tye
Thanks DC Fishing!!!! I know I should do some kind of intro and other things but I'm not good at that sort of thing. I also like people to see me make a mistake or two which is why I don't edit my videos.
@@dustinc30 Thank you!!! I don't edit and I don't have a professional camera but I try to make them look as good as possible. My early videos were terrible as the first camera wasn't good and my lighting was really bad. Thanks again, I appreciate your comment, it made my day!!!!
Thank you Y.B!!!! I hope you have a safe trip and a very successful one as well!!!! I think this jig works so well because the fish don't see that squirrel tail material too often.
Thank you very much Slamming Jack!!!! I couldn't find a gray that I liked so I made my own and I was pleased with it. It is nice to know that others like the color as well!!!
Curious about your eyes do you glue them after powder coating. What style and glue do you use to install them. Do you coat over them after installing them
Scott, if I'm using cheaper eyes like the ones sold on ebay, I'll glue them on. I use a really, really small dot of Loctite super glue gel and then put the eyes on. For larger jigs and lures 1/4oz and up I seal the eyes and entire jig in Devcon 2-ton epoxy. For crappie jigs I coat the head and eyes with Loon Hard Head clear but Sally Hansen's Hard as nails clear will work just as well. The Hard Head and Sally Hansen's only takes a minute to cure but the Hard Head doesn't have an odor. The Devcon 2-Ton epoxy takes 12 hours to cure but I go 24 hours just to make sure it is at maximum hardness.
I pour my own jig heads. You can pour this without the wire keeper, here is the mold - barlowstackle.com/Do-It-Minnow-Head-Jig-Mold-with-Wire-Keeper-P3028/
What is the deal with the comments. I love it when you explain all the reasons you do things. Especially when you do things like mix your own colors This squirrel tail really looks good. I’m going to have to get some the squirrel and also I need to try some fox. I noticed that you are tying a lot of crappie jigs recently. Are you planning on fishing for crappie and is this a particularly good time of year to target crappie or do you fish for crappie year round. As always thanks for all you do for us.
Thank you Wm!!! I don't do a ton of crappie fishing so my jig box gets depleted over time and then I need to tie a bunch to fill it up. So being at home I've been going through the box and tying up things I need. If there isn't a video on any of them I put it on here in case people are interested.
smalljaw don’t get me wrong. I love watching any jig you tie. You have opened up a whole new aspect of fishing for me and these crappie jigs a part of it. I don’t understand why they changed where the comments are. It seemed a lot easier before but I m sure UA-cam has there reasons. Hope you can put your jigs to use in the near future. Hopefully all this virus stuff is over soon. Stay safe and as always thanks for all you do for us! Man. I sure like that squirrel tail

Don't apologize. Lol. Now I know how to fix it when I mess up. And I enjoy watching you cut the fur it helps my routine get cleaner!
Thank you William!!!
Hi Smalljaw, not looked @ one of your vids in a while... good to see you are still doing it.
Yeah, I'm still at it....LOL!!!!
I started making some , my Buddy hunts squirrel 🐿️ He gave me 6 of them . Thanks for the demo 👍🐿️
Thanks Rick, glad you liked the video!!!!
Great looking jig. The crappie will slam this bait.
Anything "crappie" colored just kills when they are on the beds. Nailed the colors perfectly. Better than live bait.
Thank you very much!!!!

Love the jighead color
Thank you!!!!
Gonna have to try this one thanks
I think you'll like it!!! I'm not sure but I believe that little bit of white in the squirrel tail gets them to eat this jig.
I just left the fly shop with new materials. Thanks
@@awfoutdoors6299 Well I can tell you it is money well spent!!!! Now hit the vise and lets see what you come up with!!!!
Nice looking jig !!

I've done that before. Most of the time I only double wrap the last 1/8" to get a taper.

Gene, I think we've all been tempted to do something similar. BTW, salt and Borax, not corn meal, at least I never heard of that one.

Salt and borax

Nice!
I love watching your videos. think you can show how you color your jig heads, I'm a newbie at this.
