hello thanks for the great session i am at the very beginning of Dutch i have a question when we want to create a question sentence from a regular one by using question words like waarom , waar, etc you are saying that just you do (inversion) and add the question word at the beginning of the sentence. How about boterhammen zijn van mij (sandwiches are mine) if i want to say which sandwiches are mine according to rule you mentioned it is supposed to be welke zijn boterhammen van mij ,,,,,,,, (instead of welke boterhammen zijn van mij) because the verb (zijn) and the subject (boterhammen) should be inverted and the question word will be written at the beginning of the sentence may you please clarify it for me thanks in advance
Hi! That's a really good question. Actually, 'welke' (which) and 'wiens' (whose) are not the same type of word as wie, wat, waar, hoe, waarom and wanneer. 'Welke' and 'wiens' always stay together with the noun. Basically, they are the question-version of 'deze' and 'mijn'. So: Deze boterham is van mij --> Welke boterham is van mij? And: Mijn auto is groen --> Wiens auto is groen? I wish I had included this in the video, but unfortunately it's not possible to edit them. Thanks for asking, though!
I've been struggling with German in the past. I recently turned my attention to learning Dutch as well. Your videos are logical and easy to follow. The best content I've found on language learning. Thanks!
Aside from making lessons so easy to understand, you have such a reassuring spirit that us students find motivating. I hope all is well with you, Niels! Thank you for your amazing work 🙏🏽
Great videos Niels! I backed you up on Patreon and I told my friends to do the same. I really like your way of teaching. Really relaxed and well explained. I'd love to see some videos with shortcuts, like you see on the book "Dutch for English-Speaking Expats". You're awesome! keep it up jongen
Dude you are such a legend, your videos are helping me so much. I am moving to the Netherlands next year so will be watching all of them repeatedly! :)
I started learning Dutch in September and have recently discovered your channel, I love the way you explain everything, it really helps a lot. Dank je wel en ik hoop dat je meer video's maakt! :)
love the straightforward yet clear way you explain the subjects in your videos. language learning apps have been helpful for me but none of them really explain how sentence construction and grammar actually work. ive learnt a lot more about that from watching your stuff. thanks!
I just found your channel, I'm doing an intermediate class and can't speak English in class to ask basic questions about the fundamentals that I've forgotten- these videos are so helpful mate, I'll share with my classmates and drop a donation via Patreon
Please come back man I charish these videos. I hope all is well with your new job and pray that you will have time to produce more videos in the future. No need for such high quality, just your teaching is enough :)

Hey Niels mate? Do you like to play zwaartvechting? :) Ya know? That very unique type of fencing you guys have in the Netherlands if you can call it a type of fencing! XD Ya know? It's that same type of swordsmanship sport that's pretty much similar to kendo what they have in Japan! 😃😃😃😃😃
Hey Niels, I am from Germany and would like to learn some Dutch for travelling but esp. to visit Amsterdam. I am very surprised to learn that the Dutch are extremly well at speaking English but I am somebody who "respects" each national culture by learning some basic level of the home country's official language. Anyway, is it true that's "sufficient" to know good English [without knowing Dutch] in order to get along with the natives ?
Hey, hele duidelijke video, mijn vriend leert nu nederlands.
Hia Niels! :) You ok mate? :) What do ya think of France winning the footy in this year’s World Cup? :) And another silly question I’ve got is am I cheating at learning Dutch if I try to sing a song in Dutch just as long as I’m granted the lyrics with Dutch on top and the English translation at the bottom? :) I swear to god, you can find quite a few Disney songs on UA-cam in Dutch just like that! 😃😃😃😃 And.. If I think I’ve somewhat got the pronunciations ok, despite my very thick improper North Eastern English Mackem accent, I have NO idea what I’m even saying! 😂😂😂😂
I wish I could! There's no reliable way to tell if a word is _de_ or _het_, just by looking at the word. That doesn't mean there's nothing that can help you, though. Words ending in -je are always 'het', words ending in '-heid' are always 'de', for example, and there are many more examples that can help you. I might make a video on the topic some time. Also important to remember: most words in the language are 'de' (I would guess ~75% or so)
Learn Dutch with Niels! Thanks mate! ;) :) My name’s Michael and I’m from Sunderland, the North East of England! XD Now, feel free to call me nosy but I was reading the comment section in one of these awesome videos of yours and I think you were telling somebody that ya from the, er... The South of the Netherlands?! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃 And all you Dutch folk are totally awesome lovely people! 😃😃😃😃😃😃😃😃
Learn Dutch with Niels! Oh yeah, like you already mentioned suffixes that end with heid always get de, all words that end with je get het and every singular diminutive is no exception and all plurals always get de, thank god! XD And yes! I’m very ignorant with Dutch I admit that! But I’m CONVINCED that the spelling rules and what makes a singular a plural are NOWHERE near as dickish as of all them rules are in English! 😃😃😃😃 Like in English, if house rhymes with mouse then why in brass tarnation do they have two different plurals?! 😂😂😂😂 And why in brass tarnation in English do we have loads of “F” sounds that ALWAYS need to have “Ph”?! 😂😂😂😂
Is your neighbour on vacation? Is zijn buurman op vakantie? Where does he sleep? Waar slaapt hij (he)? Can I borrow your book? Mag ik je boek lenen? Ik vind "kan" is niet een fout, maar het is een andere betekenis.
Hi! Thanks for asking. No, I don't teach anymore, but I'm sure you'll find a great teacher! Don't be afraid to take a trial lesson to see if you like them! I recommend private lessons if you can afford them
Why don't you post videos any more? I have learnd alot from your videos. Please make new ones. Don't even edit them. Just take video selfies and post them :) that's how badly I need your vids

Absolutely brilliant !! Dankje!
Quick question, is " y " always pronounced like the English y in "yellow " ?
The letter "y" does not exist in Dutch. Instead we have the "ij" which used to be one letter, but in this keyboard times we write it as "ij". It is pronounced as the english "i" in the word "ripe" (not quite, but close). Only at the end of a word with vocals in front (like in my surname, see above) it is pronounced as the english "y" as in "yonder".
Thank you very much!!!!! Cant appreciatie more

Leandro Gomes - Ja, goeie vraag. Hij en zij krijgen inderdaad altijd +t. Willen is één van de weinige uitzonderingen. 'Hij wilt' is dus niet correct.

Hi Niels, i really like your explanation about dutch language. Can you maybe make a video about object pronouns?
English=Does he sleep?, Is he sleeping?
Dutch=slaapt hij?, slaapt hij?
Please Niels. Please can you tell us exactly all the information what dictates de and het?
I wish I could! There's no reliable way to tell if a word is _de_ or _het_, just by looking at the word. That doesn't mean there's nothing that can help you, though.
