Fun fact: Tokyo Disneyland's Haunted Mansion is basically an exact replica of the original Haunted Mansion at WDW when it first opened in 1971. Obviously the WDW version has had several changes made to it over the years, but Tokyo's version has largely remained the same as when it first opened, so if you ever want to see how the WDW Haunted Mansion originally looked at opening day, Tokyo's version is pretty much it. I only rode the WDW HM a handful of times before the refurbishment in 2006 that gave us the HM that we see now at WDW, but watching videos of the Tokyo HM is pretty cool to see and confirmed that I still have some memories of the original HM as well. It's definitely worth watching here on youtube if you've never seen it before.

I love the historical relevance and references you mentioned! That is something missing from the parks now a days. Every attraction must now have some sort of IP related to it. Rides like HM and POTC have really been a cultural time capsule of the past.

It’s disappointing at times to me that attractions like this seem to be dying. My all time favorite ride is Haunted Mansion because of its story. You can honestly do a deep dive search and still not have the entire story of the mansion, with ever detail intact. It’s pretty amazing. For that same reason, it’s amazing to ride it and experience it in person. It takes a fairly substantial amount of rides to really read the entire story and by golly, is it a good one if you give it the chance. I’ve grown up riding it for about 19 years now and still don’t know every story inside the Mansion and that just amazes me… and the way those stories are told and represented via every sort of sense short of flavor/taste in a physical sense on the tongue… I enjoy that a lot as well. I like how the older attractions allow the guest to play a “central character role” in a fictional story because of the theming. I guess you could say I like Haunted Mansion because it’s a lot like reading a very good book and… you’d be right. If UA-cam supported posting photos, you’d see images now of my tall stacks of books and my full book shelves. I love reading and my favorite genre is probably Horror or Paranormal Science and Metaphysics. Haunted Mansion technically relates to both of those, so it’s like getting to be surrounded by my favorite reading genres every time I ride…
As a history nerd, I loved the deep dive not just into the history of the HM but that of Western ghost stories and the supernatural. It's clear how much time and effort you spend on these videos - and it pays off! I learn something new with every upload

That's an excellent point and something I oftentimes notice. IPs are a crutch for a lack of talent and creativity within the company, and it's a sad state of things.
Fun fact : The Escher stairwell may in a very small way have existed, but I remember a s;pider, when going in 1995, before 20007, when the stairwell actually appeared, just like the ACTUALLY no earlier than 2011 interactive queuie!
The Haunting of Hill House is one of my all time favorite movies. It freaked me out as a kid and my mom pointed out some of the gags from the movie that were used in the ride which then became one of my absolute favorites because of it! Great memories. Great video!!
I’ve always loved the design of the Disneyland haunted mansion much more than the Disney World one, it may not be as creepy, but it’s eerily accurate to what abandoned Plantation houses look like, most long abandoned antebellum mansions stay pristine for a long long time.

One of the nuances I was sad to see missed here, which did add to our concepts of Ghosts, was the Christian Renaissance era interpretation that would have been the prevailing view during Shakespeare's day and age--and helps put his play Hamlet back into context. Too often we look at Hamlet's father's ghost as just his dead father come back to life, but that isn't how an Elizabethan audience would have taken that scene. An Elizabethan audience would have relatively common knowledge that ghosts weren't your actual dead relatives but were either demons or angels who've taken the form of your dead relative in order to influence your actions for good or ill. Thus we get the whole good/bad ghost divide brought in. It was something that people in the Late Medieval/Renaissance learned at university on how to tell the difference between a good ghost or a bad ghost through inquiry. That's partly why Horatio has been brought out to the guards' lookout post, because as a university trained gentleman, it is assumed that he has this training. Horatio meanwhile in that scene is a stand-in for the typical skeptical educated Elizabethan, who's starting to view ghosts as this old superstition, not worth taking seriously. And then oh, no, the ghost turns out to be real and now Horatio's on the spot and has to figure out if it's good or bad. Horatio charges it to speak in the name of Heaven and of Christ--but every time he does, the ghost flees. Then later, after it's met with Hamlet, the ghost bangs from underneath the stage while Hamlet is asking everyone to swear to silence and secrecy. In the Elizabethan theatre heaven was often represented up in the balcony, while hell was depicted as being beneath the stage. All these context clues would have made it obvious to your average Elizabethan to know that the ghost is actually a demon in the shape of Hamlet the elder who has come back to influence Hamlet to go on a path of vengeance and destruction. It's an important development, because older concepts of ghosts didn't try to put them into a moral framework, outside of assigning them different places to dwell in Hades. Christianity adds in the good/bad morality to ghosts and thus you can argue influences the two different tones of the ride--with the horror & malevolence influenced by the stories that took the "bad ghost" interpretation and ran with it, while the more comedic tone influenced by the long line of those who took the "good ghost" interpretation and ran with it.
I have no clue why your channel hasn't blown up yet. You're out here making content as good and often BETTER than a lot of other Disney/amusement park channels out there. Keep at it, man, you're building it and they will eventually come. Grade A Disney parks content on this channel.

Having just seen the new Haunted Mansion film, I like that both Yale Gracey and Rollie Crump are given tribute. The Haunted Mansion in New Orleans is said to be the Gracey House, while a different House, based on the Disney World Haunted Mansion is said to be Crump Manor.
Love, love, LOVE this ride. Went on it when I was very, very little, and it's stuck with me all these years later. The bleeding heart bride and ballroom have always been my favourite scenes. I'm even working on making a Halloween costume for next year from the Tightrope Girl stretching portrait.
Very well-thought-out video. There's a reason this attraction remains a fan favorite. The amount of detail the Imagineers put into this ride is staggering. I wish the current Disney Staff could get the green light to develop some new rides not related to IP. I don't really doubt the talent of the Imagineers, but I do doubt we will ever get something original like this in the near future. Thank you for all the research you did!

The channel will get there I suppose. Last month it jumped from around 2,000 subscribers to 11,000 and it's been growing pretty steadily since. Even if my views stayed low, I still enjoy creating these types of videos as a hobby.
in Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" there is only 1 ghost, Marley. Marley warns that Scrooge will be visited by 3 spirits. While all ghosts are spirits, and the terms frequently get used interchangeably, not all spirits are ghosts. The Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are embodiments of concepts, not souls of the deceased. The three spirits would be more akin to the idea of nymphs, dryads, or other nature spirits.
I always see the Haunted Mansion and its French equivalent as the golden standard for haunted house attractions to which only a few non-Disney attractions were able to reach that standard.

The cemetery scene in Orlando is superior and more humorous but Phantom Manor has its own pristine detailing all over. One huge remark and criticism is again regarding the forced sales implementation of Disney+ lukewarm IP: the character of the bride with an axe and horror face is a shocking disrespectful intrusion in the ride. This new horror bride clashes with the beautiful original bride 👰♀️ doll who was voiced by the original Madame Leota. There never was a violent ugly bride in the Disney Haunted Mansion ride. Precisely in Phantom Manor, the beautiful bride is a mesmerizing main character who hypnotically sings all along and is centerpiece in the story-there is no evil bride !! Why does Disney have to mess up everything like that!!!?
This is a incredible video; I have always been a fan of the Haunted Mansion ride. I have always blown away by the incredible talent and the artistic skills of the Imagineers. I would love to see another North American Disney park Haunted house ride based on a combination of the original design based on Captain Gore and his wife story; in addition to Rolly Crump's lesser known plans for a 'Museum of the Weird'. I know this is never going to occur but it would cool to see Imagineers go back to old designs from the early years of WED and build from there. Maybe a new Haunted Mansion trackless ride that combines the best of Mystic Manor at Hong Kong and the ride Symbolica: Palace of Fantasy at Efteling were the doom buggys split up. It would be a great way to keep the legacy of Walt & those original Imagineers alive in Disneyland or Walt Disney World and we have another original park ride, steeped in Disney history.
In a way, Mystic Manor almost seems like a successor to the Museum of the Weird. It lacks many of the elements drawn up in the concept art, but still seems to serve the same purpose. Imagineering considers it an actual form of the Haunted Mansion concept, so I have to wonder if it really is an evolution of that idea.
Found your Channel a week ago and I’ve binged it. This type of content is my favorite. My favorite video you’ve done is Efteling I had never heard of the park and just seeing the amazing dark rides was so awesome.
I feel that I'm often a bit too negative, but I also can't not criticize when I think it's warranted. That being said, I started the channel with the idea for making videos like this, breaking down attractions and exploring the culture that inspired them.

However, I think it should be mentioned that, allegedly, there actually WERE Asian-inspired ghosts planned for the original ride, but were eventually left out. I recommend Anne Elizabeth's channel for more details. =)
Really great video! I love the historical aspects being explained alongside ride development. It really gives an extra layer to understanding how the ride was made and the thought that went into it. In general I love how your videos aren't afraid to delve deep into specific cases in rides and parks, or be critical of them in an academic way. One brief point about ghosts in East Asia; I would say it's not so much that ghosts are only a Western concept (they're universal to human cultures) but that East Asia takes ghosts far, far more seriously. Most Westerners view ghosts as something to ogle or as some cool thing to experience. East Asian cultures view them more as serious entities not to be messed with, lest they curse or possess you.
In Japan's case in particular, it is true that Fantasyland was seen as the best fit for their Haunted Mansion because they tend to see Western ghost stories as more fantastical. At the same time though, they do have a very different idea of what ghosts, spirits, etc. are, and while there are varying types, you're right about quite a few of them being things you don't want to encounter, some of which can just find you at random and will torment or even kill you for no discernable reason.
I totally agree with the comment below - it's amazing that Disney used to really care themselves, using a team to research and create a totally immersive and 'believable' experience rooted in history, myth or cultural stories, like Jean Lafitte. Weaving a dense story that extended to several rides across the park. Now its "slap a recognisable character on it and we good!" oh and "whack an extra $20 on the ticket price too. Which is really sad :( On a different note - Love your videos and appreciate how much work you must put in to each one. You clearly have put in extensive research to cross-reference each element of The Haunted Mansion with it's inspirations, including clips and evidence. Your video essays make me feel so inspired to produce something of my own as I cannot absorb enough information about some subjects and sometimes feel full of 'useless information'! So I would like to extend my appreciation of what you do and if you have any tips for creating video essays that would be amazing. It's definitely an interesting film, and a pretty decent adaptation of the book. The Netflix show was good, but it was so devolved from the material that I consider it a separate thing.
The scientific approach to spirits/ ghosts is this: We currently lack the tools to prove, or disprove thier existence. In most circumstances, a simpler explanation can be used to describe an event. However, you cannot discount the emotional response has from a potential haunting. Think of the electromagnetic spectrum, there is visible light, radiation, x-rays, radio waves, that all exists that we only know about because of imaging technology. So, it is possible, but unlikely, that we will develop a way to detect spiritual phenomenon. Until this occurs, we cannot definitively prove, nor disprove spiritual phenomenon. All we can do, is rule out other possibilities.
When I was growing up my grandfather worked at Disney. 60s and 70s. He had unlimitted tickets to Disneyland and gave us a ton of albums and books from Hyperion Press the publishing arm of Disney. Remember when the ride opened and even had a long playing record for it. There was a whole story line for the ride and songs on that record.
Everyone has covered the history of the ride, so I thought I might as well cover the culture that inspired it. That's something that I've noticed about many older Disney attractions, in that they have a lot of depth because there's so much cultural context if you know where to look for it. It's part of the reason that I dislike the new IP direction for things, because those experiences feel very hollow and superficial to me.

This is a pretty well put together overview! It's kind of funny that the inspirations for most of the Haunted Mansion also spawned some HHN houses - and it reveals just how scary ghosts can be when that's what they're used for. Not as much to speak of on my end - it's mostly just the neat history of a legendary attraction. I'll leave, however, with this: You don't need a franchise to make a ride good, and classic Disney is solid proof of this.
Monsters was easily one of my favorites from 2019, but Hill House is definitely on the weaker side. I think it's just the nature of the Netflix series and that it doesn't necessarily translate well into a house. I felt the same way with both Stranger Things houses, feeling that they were quite weak and completely over-rated with only the IP name drawing them in alone.
@@PoseidonEntertainment Yeah - while I haven't watched either Stranger Things or Hill House (nor have I been to a HHN event), the shows have a *lot* more time to build up than what's given in a maybe 5-10 minute walkthrough. I think that's the main thing - there's just not enough time to properly express what makes people love those series.
I found your channel a couple of months ago and like watching all your videos, but your deeper dive videos like this one are my favorite. Maybe because haunt mansion is one of my favorite rides at wdw. But you have to ride it at night to get the most out of it, too much day light filters in during the day.
I'm not sure if I agree. I like to go in on a hot day and go through the experience before my eyes can adjust to the dark. It seems a bit more... atmospheric that way I suppose?

Another legacy might be World of Warcraft's Karazhan Dungeon. It has a ballroom, Opera Hall, and more, and...ghosts. It's pretty fun and the moment I went in there, I could see the Haunted Mansion in it.

To say that Asia do not have ghosts is wrong. They do have ghosts. While not all of their ideas about ghosts align with western ideas, there are similar concepts. Such as ghosts being unable to move on because of how they died. Asia has a lot of stories about ghosts, specially females, whom held onto their grudges from being killed and look to get revenge. Of course, their ghost world is much more complex, and different countries has different beliefs... Japan have a whole cavalcade of ghosts and half ghosts known as Yokai. Yokai is much more than ghosts and include all kinds of paranormal beings, but ghosts, zombies, and all kinds of undead are grouped in there.
I'd certainly be interested. I was unsure of how well people would respond to this type of video, but there appears to be a small group of people who really like it. The history of Caribbean piracy is an almost linear narrative, so I imagine that such a video wouldn't be too difficult to do. It wouldn't be for a while because I have a slate of other video ideas in mind, but I think it could be interesting.
best mini doc on my favorite ride, and I've seen a ton of them. However, about Japanese culture and ghost stories, ghosts are not relegated to fairy tales, that would be yokai. the haunted mansion is 'somewhat' in fantasy land as it borders critter country and frontier land... remember OLC didn't have much land to work with when building TDR.
That's part of the reason with why I phrased the information as I did in the video. I'm quite busy but I wanted to have this video out before Halloween, so I wasn't able to do much research on the cultural differences between western conceptions of ghosts and that of east Asia. I'm thinking I'll tackle that and Mystic Manor at another time.
@@PoseidonEntertainment funny enough summer is the time for things to go bump in the night here in Japan, its when the earthly plain and the otherworldly is at it's thinnest, according to jp culture . It also coincides with 'Obon' (think mexican day of the dead but for week instead of a day). Halloween on the other hand has grown in popularity in these past 7 years, but it's more for young adults to get tipsy and let their hair down, trick or treating isn't widely practiced unless its used as a markting ploy at department stores. People have been saying Dinoland should be replaced with IP based lands like Indiana Jones, Zootopia, or Jungle Book. It's difficult to know what to say. I covered these rumors briefly in my History of Disney and Dinosaurs video, but until something definitive happens or an announcement is made, I afraid that I don't have much to say.
While watching this video all I could think of why is there not a Hercules ride using the tech from Shanghai pirates . You would take the raft that would travel to hades . I could imagine how incredible that ride would be with Hercules clearing the way with Pegasus of coarse. You could put a Phil anamorphic on the front of the boat like e.t.
A Hercules ride in Fantasyland would be pretty fantastic. Using the Shanghai pirates tech would be a great idea as well. I think an attraction for a Greece themed pavilion in Epcot would work really well with this ride system. I would want it to be more tangible and less Disney animated film though.
What is the haunted mansion story? I don’t know what it’s about. It’s my favorite ride, of course but I never understood the three ghosts I was always confused.
I'm a pretty novice theme park explorer (never been to Disney) but have been to Universal a few times. It seems to me rides like these are extremely popular, and in quite a few cases, guests favorite ride. What is the #1 reason in your opinion that everything is so IP driven, rather than doing more things like this?
IP is a lazy crutch for Disney. When Universal opened Universal Studios Florida, the idea behind the park was to immerse people into not just the world of film-making, but also the films themselves. Because Universal has always been IP based as a theme, it's perfectly acceptable. However, their parks struggled post-9/11 and it was only with the introduction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010 that they recovered and took a significant chunk of Disney's market share to Disney's surprise. Since then, Disney has been taking the wrong lessons from this, thinking that IP driven attractions is what will bring people in, not understanding that Universal also ensured fantastic attraction quality and a detailed, interactive land that acted as an attraction itself. It's not that Disney hasn't always understood that synergy between film brands and the parks, as Sleeping Beauty Castle was in part designed as a promotion. Even Eisner went after Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but the attraction experience or contribution to the parks came first over the current iteration of "create a generic ride and slap a brand on it".
I would recommend you look into yūrei, yōkai, and japanese urban legends. Japan has plenty that is almost analogous to western ghosts. As for China, thats more because of the political state of China and the CCP.

Great video at least the parts where I could understand the muddled narration. Slow down man so we can understand the narrative. When you spend 30% of your time trying to recreate the audio you just heard in order to follow along and actually enjoy what you are watching is just simply annoying. The Haunting of Hill House is one of my all time favorite movies. It freaked me out as a kid and my mom pointed out some of the gags from the movie that were used in the ride which then became one of my absolute favorites because of it! Great memories. Great video!!
I’ve always loved the design of the Disneyland haunted mansion much more than the Disney World one, it may not be as creepy, but it’s eerily accurate to what abandoned Plantation houses look like, most long abandoned antebellum mansions stay pristine for a long long time.

That's part of what I appreciate about the many classic Disney attractions. They have depth because of the history and culture that inspired them.
One of the nuances I was sad to see missed here, which did add to our concepts of Ghosts, was the Christian Renaissance era interpretation that would have been the prevailing view during Shakespeare's day and age--and helps put his play Hamlet back into context. Too often we look at Hamlet's father's ghost as just his dead father come back to life, but that isn't how an Elizabethan audience would have taken that scene. An Elizabethan audience would have relatively common knowledge that ghosts weren't your actual dead relatives but were either demons or angels who've taken the form of your dead relative in order to influence your actions for good or ill. Thus we get the whole good/bad ghost divide brought in.
It was something that people in the Late Medieval/Renaissance learned at university on how to tell the difference between a good ghost or a bad ghost through inquiry. That's partly why Horatio has been brought out to the guards' lookout post, because as a university trained gentleman, it is assumed that he has this training.
Horatio meanwhile in that scene is a stand-in for the typical skeptical educated Elizabethan, who's starting to view ghosts as this old superstition, not worth taking seriously. And then oh, no, the ghost turns out to be real and now Horatio's on the spot and has to figure out if it's good or bad. Horatio charges it to speak in the name of Heaven and of Christ--but every time he does, the ghost flees. Then later, after it's met with Hamlet, the ghost bangs from underneath the stage while Hamlet is asking everyone to swear to silence and secrecy. In the Elizabethan theatre heaven was often represented up in the balcony, while hell was depicted as being beneath the stage. All these context clues would have made it obvious to your average Elizabethan to know that the ghost is actually a demon in the shape of Hamlet the elder who has come back to influence Hamlet to go on a path of vengeance and destruction.
It's an important development, because older concepts of ghosts didn't try to put them into a moral framework, outside of assigning them different places to dwell in Hades. Christianity adds in the good/bad morality to ghosts and thus you can argue influences the two different tones of the ride--with the horror & malevolence influenced by the stories that took the "bad ghost" interpretation and ran with it, while the more comedic tone influenced by the long line of those who took the "good ghost" interpretation and ran with it.

Having just seen the new Haunted Mansion film, I like that both Yale Gracey and Rollie Crump are given tribute. The Haunted Mansion in New Orleans is said to be the Gracey House, while a different House, based on the Disney World Haunted Mansion is said to be Crump Manor.
Love, love, LOVE this ride. Went on it when I was very, very little, and it's stuck with me all these years later. The bleeding heart bride and ballroom have always been my favourite scenes. I'm even working on making a Halloween costume for next year from the Tightrope Girl stretching portrait.
Very well-thought-out video. There's a reason this attraction remains a fan favorite. The amount of detail the Imagineers put into this ride is staggering. I wish the current Disney Staff could get the green light to develop some new rides not related to IP. I don't really doubt the talent of the Imagineers, but I do doubt we will ever get something original like this in the near future.

Now that you say it, a character in the graveyard depicting Day of the Dead would be interesting. However, a direct tie-in to the film would be most unwelcome.

The channel will get there I suppose. Last month it jumped from around 2,000 subscribers to 11,000 and it's been growing pretty steadily since. Even if my views stayed low, I still enjoy creating these types of videos as a hobby.

Marley warns that Scrooge will be visited by 3 spirits.
While all ghosts are spirits, and the terms frequently get used interchangeably, not all spirits are ghosts.
The Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Future are embodiments of concepts, not souls of the deceased.
The three spirits would be more akin to the idea of nymphs, dryads, or other nature spirits.

I always see the Haunted Mansion and its French equivalent as the golden standard for haunted house attractions to which only a few non-Disney attractions were able to reach that standard.

@@PoseidonEntertainmentI was lucky to experience Phantom Manor for years, some story aspects are definitely well conceived and more elaborate. The cemetery scene in Orlando is superior and more humorous but Phantom Manor has its own pristine detailing all over.
One huge remark and criticism is again regarding the forced sales implementation of Disney+ lukewarm IP: the character of the bride with an axe and horror face is a shocking disrespectful intrusion in the ride.
This new horror bride clashes with the beautiful original bride 👰♀️ doll who was voiced by the original Madame Leota. There never was a violent ugly bride in the Disney Haunted Mansion ride. Precisely in Phantom Manor, the beautiful bride is a mesmerizing main character who hypnotically sings all along and is centerpiece in the story-there is no evil bride !! Why does Disney have to mess up everything like that!!!?
This is a incredible video; I have always been a fan of the Haunted Mansion ride. I have always blown away by the incredible talent and the artistic skills of the Imagineers. I would love to see another North American Disney park Haunted house ride based on a combination of the original design based on Captain Gore and his wife story; in addition to Rolly Crump's lesser known plans for a 'Museum of the Weird'. I know this is never going to occur but it would cool to see Imagineers go back to old designs from the early years of WED and build from there. Maybe a new Haunted Mansion trackless ride that combines the best of Mystic Manor at Hong Kong and the ride Symbolica: Palace of Fantasy at Efteling were the doom buggys split up. It would be a great way to keep the legacy of Walt & those original Imagineers alive in Disneyland or Walt Disney World and we have another original park ride, steeped in Disney history.
In a way, Mystic Manor almost seems like a successor to the Museum of the Weird. It lacks many of the elements drawn up in the concept art, but still seems to serve the same purpose. Imagineering considers it an actual form of the Haunted Mansion concept, so I have to wonder if it really is an evolution of that idea.
Found your Channel a week ago and I’ve binged it. This type of content is my favorite. My favorite video you’ve done is Efteling I had never heard of the park and just seeing the amazing dark rides was so awesome.
I feel that I'm often a bit too negative, but I also can't not criticize when I think it's warranted. That being said, I started the channel with the idea for making videos like this, breaking down attractions and exploring the culture that inspired them.

“The Haunting” is based on Shirley Jackson’s novel “The Haunting of Hill House”. Both film and book are wonderfully frightening.
I would love a follow up video about the other versions of this attraction and their differences.
Really great video! I love the historical aspects being explained alongside ride development. It really gives an extra layer to understanding how the ride was made and the thought that went into it. In general I love how your videos aren't afraid to delve deep into specific cases in rides and parks, or be critical of them in an academic way.

One brief point about ghosts in East Asia; I would say it's not so much that ghosts are only a Western concept (they're universal to human cultures) but that East Asia takes ghosts far, far more seriously. Most Westerners view ghosts as something to ogle or as some cool thing to experience. East Asian cultures view them more as serious entities not to be messed with, lest they curse or possess you.
I didn't really have time to explore this, so perhaps I'll make it the subject of a video at a later date.
In Japan's case in particular, it is true that Fantasyland was seen as the best fit for their Haunted Mansion because they tend to see Western ghost stories as more fantastical. At the same time though, they do have a very different idea of what ghosts, spirits, etc. are, and while there are varying types, you're right about quite a few of them being things you don't want to encounter, some of which can just find you at random and will torment or even kill you for no discernable reason.
I totally agree with the comment below - it's amazing that Disney used to really care themselves, using a team to research and create a totally immersive and 'believable' experience rooted in history, myth or cultural stories, like Jean Lafitte. Weaving a dense story that extended to several rides across the park. Now its "slap a recognisable character on it and we good!" oh and "whack an extra $20 on the ticket price too. Which is really sad :(
On a different note - Love your videos and appreciate how much work you must put in to each one. You clearly have put in extensive research to cross-reference each element of The Haunted Mansion with it's inspirations, including clips and evidence. Your video essays make me feel so inspired to produce something of my own as I cannot absorb enough information about some subjects and sometimes feel full of 'useless information'! So I would like to extend my appreciation of what you do and if you have any tips for creating video essays that would be amazing. It's definitely an interesting film, and a pretty decent adaptation of the book. The Netflix show was good, but it was so devolved from the material that I consider it a separate thing.

The scientific approach to spirits/ ghosts is this:
We currently lack the tools to prove, or disprove thier existence.
In most circumstances, a simpler explanation can be used to describe an event. However, you cannot discount the emotional response has from a potential haunting.
Think of the electromagnetic spectrum, there is visible light, radiation, x-rays, radio waves, that all exists that we only know about because of imaging technology.
So, it is possible, but unlikely, that we will develop a way to detect spiritual phenomenon. Until this occurs, we cannot definitively prove, nor disprove spiritual phenomenon. All we can do, is rule out other possibilities.

When I was growing up my grandfather worked at Disney. 60s and 70s. He had unlimitted tickets to Disneyland and gave us a ton of albums and books from Hyperion Press the publishing arm of Disney. Remember when the ride opened and even had a long playing record for it. There was a whole story line for the ride and songs on that record.
I think that's the one that I found recently on cd, with the picture book included in the packaging. Ron Howard did one of the teenager's voices.

Everyone has covered the history of the ride, so I thought I might as well cover the culture that inspired it. That's something that I've noticed about many older Disney attractions, in that they have a lot of depth because there's so much cultural context if you know where to look for it. It's part of the reason that I dislike the new IP direction for things, because those experiences feel very hollow and superficial to me.

This is a pretty well put together overview! It's kind of funny that the inspirations for most of the Haunted Mansion also spawned some HHN houses - and it reveals just how scary ghosts can be when that's what they're used for.
Not as much to speak of on my end - it's mostly just the neat history of a legendary attraction. I'll leave, however, with this: You don't need a franchise to make a ride good, and classic Disney is solid proof of this.
Monsters was easily one of my favorites from 2019, but Hill House is definitely on the weaker side. I think it's just the nature of the Netflix series and that it doesn't necessarily translate well into a house. I felt the same way with both Stranger Things houses, feeling that they were quite weak and completely over-rated with only the IP name drawing them in alone.
@@PoseidonEntertainment Yeah - while I haven't watched either Stranger Things or Hill House (nor have I been to a HHN event), the shows have a *lot* more time to build up than what's given in a maybe 5-10 minute walkthrough. I think that's the main thing - there's just not enough time to properly express what makes people love those series.
I found your channel a couple of months ago and like watching all your videos, but your deeper dive videos like this one are my favorite. Maybe because haunt mansion is one of my favorite rides at wdw. But you have to ride it at night to get the most out of it, too much day light filters in during the day.
I'm not sure if I agree. I like to go in on a hot day and go through the experience before my eyes can adjust to the dark. It seems a bit more... atmospheric that way I suppose?

I vaguely remember seeing something like that a long time ago, but I couldn't find it again for reference. That being said, I picked up on the many similarities between Hill House and the Haunted Mansion regardless.

They are all wonderful, but the Paris Haunted mansion has a better story than the others.
Another legacy might be World of Warcraft's Karazhan Dungeon. It has a ballroom, Opera Hall, and more, and...ghosts. It's pretty fun and the moment I went in there, I could see the Haunted Mansion in it.

To say that Asia do not have ghosts is wrong. They do have ghosts. While not all of their ideas about ghosts align with western ideas, there are similar concepts. Such as ghosts being unable to move on because of how they died. Asia has a lot of stories about ghosts, specially females, whom held onto their grudges from being killed and look to get revenge. Of course, their ghost world is much more complex, and different countries has different beliefs... Japan have a whole cavalcade of ghosts and half ghosts known as Yokai. Yokai is much more than ghosts and include all kinds of paranormal beings, but ghosts, zombies, and all kinds of undead are grouped in there.
Without a doubt, my favorite ride at Disney..

I'd certainly be interested. I was unsure of how well people would respond to this type of video, but there appears to be a small group of people who really like it. The history of Caribbean piracy is an almost linear narrative, so I imagine that such a video wouldn't be too difficult to do. It wouldn't be for a while because I have a slate of other video ideas in mind, but I think it could be interesting.

best mini doc on my favorite ride, and I've seen a ton of them. However, about Japanese culture and ghost stories, ghosts are not relegated to fairy tales, that would be yokai. the haunted mansion is 'somewhat' in fantasy land as it borders critter country and frontier land... remember OLC didn't have much land to work with when building TDR.
That's part of the reason with why I phrased the information as I did in the video. I'm quite busy but I wanted to have this video out before Halloween, so I wasn't able to do much research on the cultural differences between western conceptions of ghosts and that of east Asia. I'm thinking I'll tackle that and Mystic Manor at another time.
@@PoseidonEntertainment funny enough summer is the time for things to go bump in the night here in Japan, its when the earthly plain and the otherworldly is at it's thinnest, according to jp culture . It also coincides with 'Obon' (think mexican day of the dead but for week instead of a day). Halloween on the other hand has grown in popularity in these past 7 years, but it's more for young adults to get tipsy and let their hair down, trick or treating isn't widely practiced unless its used as a markting ploy at department stores. Great video as usual! I was wondering if you could talk about the removal of Primeval Whirl. People have been saying Dinoland should be replaced with IP based lands like Indiana Jones, Zootopia, or Jungle Book. I’d make my own video against these ideas, but I was hoping you would since you actually have an audience.

While watching this video all I could think of why is there not a Hercules ride using the tech from Shanghai pirates . You would take the raft that would travel to hades . I could imagine how incredible that ride would be with Hercules clearing the way with Pegasus of coarse. You could put a Phil anamorphic on the front of the boat like e.t.
A Hercules ride in Fantasyland would be pretty fantastic. Using the Shanghai pirates tech would be a great idea as well. I think an attraction for a Greece themed pavilion in Epcot would work really well with this ride system. I would want it to be more tangible and less Disney animated film though.

I'm a pretty novice theme park explorer (never been to Disney) but have been to Universal a few times.
It seems to me rides like these are extremely popular, and in quite a few cases, guests favorite ride.
What is the #1 reason in your opinion that everything is so IP driven, rather than doing more things like this?
IP is a lazy crutch for Disney. When Universal opened Universal Studios Florida, the idea behind the park was to immerse people into not just the world of film-making, but also the films themselves. Because Universal has always been IP based as a theme, it's perfectly acceptable. However, their parks struggled post-9/11 and it was only with the introduction of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter in 2010 that they recovered and took a significant chunk of Disney's market share to Disney's surprise. Since then, Disney has been taking the wrong lessons from this, thinking that IP driven attractions is what will bring people in, not understanding that Universal also ensured fantastic attraction quality and a detailed, interactive land that acted as an attraction itself. It's not that Disney hasn't always understood that synergy between film brands and the parks, as Sleeping Beauty Castle was in part designed as a promotion. Even Eisner went after Star Wars and Indiana Jones, but the attraction experience or contribution to the parks came first over the current iteration of "create a generic ride and slap a brand on it".

I would recommend you look into yūrei, yōkai, and japanese urban legends. Japan has plenty that is almost analogous to western ghosts. As for China, thats more because of the political state of China and the CCP.

Great video at least the parts where I could understand the muddled narration. Slow down man so we can understand the narrative. When you spend 30% of your time trying to recreate the audio you just heard in order to follow along and actually enjoy what you are watching is just simply annoying. Stopping and replaying is also a deal killer. I am saying at this time thumbs down.
