CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) targets an air tank in the shark's mouth, blowing the fish to pieces.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel, Steven Spielberg's 1975 shark saga set the standard for the New Hollywood popcorn blockbuster while frightening millions of moviegoers out of the water. One early summer night on fictional Atlantic resort Amity Island, Chrissie decides to take a moonlight skinny dip while her friends party on the beach. Yanked suddenly below the ocean surface, she never returns. When pieces of her wash ashore, Police Chief Brody (Roy Scheider) suspects the worst, but Mayor Vaughn (Murray Hamilton), mindful of the lucrative tourist trade and the approaching July 4th holiday, refuses to put the island on a business-killing shark alert. After the shark dines on a few more victims, the Mayor orders the local fishermen to catch the culprit. Satisfied with the shark they find, the greedy Mayor reopens the beaches, despite the warning from visiting ichthyologist Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) that the attacks were probably caused by a far more formidable Great White. One more fatality later, Brody and Hooper join forces with flinty old salt Quint (Robert Shaw), the only local fisherman willing to take on a Great White--especially since the price is right. The three ride off on Quint's boat "The Orca," soon coming face to teeth with the enemy.

Something I just realized, even though Quint was gone and Hooper was trapped on the seabed, all three men still helped take out the shark together. It was Quint's rifle, Hooper's oxygen tank, and Brody's aim that all came together to kill the shark.

Brody wins the battle.
RJ MacReady fun fact: Brody vs the shark is what I typed in to search for this video
I love this kind of character development. Brody started off as a meek, passive character, too afraid to enter the ocean or truly take a risk until he was the last man standing and had to act to save his own skin. And he does it by blowing up the goddamn shark with a tank in its mouth. Absolutely magnificent.

"What do I tell the kids?..."

I always liked that line. He wanted to put his wife at ease despite the terrifying scenario.
Just imagine Hooper's situation if Brody hadn't managed to shoot the shark in the end. He would've had to watch the shark eat Brody and then realize that the boat is destroyed, and that his only way to get back to land is by swimming. In other words, he would've had to wait for the shark to eat him too.
Or the ending would be an alternate version of the book. Brody waits for the shark to come to him, accepting his fate, but instead of the shark being successful it dies of bleeding.
@@juanjoyaborja.3054 or another alternate ending, hooper stabs the shark with the poison needle in the stomach, the shark dies, and hooper dies, Brody would still be on the post thing where he’s shooting the shark but he couldn’t get the oxygen tank in

2:23 One of the best pre-mortem one-liners in movie history!
44 years ago, this masterpiece was released. Let's be honest, most of us weren't even born yet. The legacy of this movie lived through the decades, which is why it's still so relevant today. This movie created the term "Summer Blockbuster" at the theatres. Steven Spielberg stuck with the harsh development, and still finished the movie. RIP Roy Shceider and Robert Shaw. The last legend alive is Richard Dreyfuss.
You still looking for work Jean ? John Pedderson sent me
Spielberg stuck with it but more importantly, his crew stuck with him. On the last day of filming, he reportedly returned quickly to shore fearing what they'd do to him now the shoot was complete :D
I wasn’t alive when Jaws was released; but it was definitely one of my favorite movies growing up as a kid!
Yes. This film made Robert Shaw a well known actor . John William's score is frightening.
@@prakashmerchant3277 Shaw was already well known I think. He was a particularly memorable henchman in From Russia With Love.
I love in "Jaws" that the person least qualified to kill the shark -- Brody -- is the only one left to finish the job. It makes the climax not only entertaining but lends it a certain poignance as well.
Agreed
He wasn't the only one
Who else was there? Quint was dead. And Hooper was unable, or unwilling, to leave the seabed, where he had escaped to after nearly being eaten by the shark while in the cage.
Hooper was in no position to do anything about the threat. Brody was. I didn't mean to suggest Brody was the only one alive. What I meant was Brody was the only one who could face off with the shark and get the job done.
plenty of people left on dry land lol. i will assume you meant of the people in the boat
After all the deaths, and all Brody has been through, I love the way his police instincts just kicked in. He was smart enough to know the only way he was going to kill the shark was to shoot at the tank. Brody was just being a good cop, and that's how he got the bad guy!

It always seemed so scary to me that if the shark had just waited perhaps 30 seconds longer before returning to attack, the ship would’ve been fully submerged and Brody would’ve been underwater.
exactly, this was Brody's very last chance to stay alive.
Quint was overconfident in his ability to kill the shark, but so was Jaws himself.

@Night Productions No he didn't, Brody was even brave enough to take on a second shark. Brody "dying from the fear" is just more bad writing from the hopefully non-canon Jaws the Revenge.
Brody's angrily but panicked exclamations of "blow up!" are so visceral to this scene. He knows he's only got one chance to kill this shark once and for all, so he can't screw it all up.

I cannot get enough of this movie! I get my love of it from my uncle, who saw it when it first came out 45 years ago, long before I was born. He showed it to me for the first time when I turned thirteen, which is how old he was when he first saw it. Afterward, he told me what it was like to watch it in the theater when it first released. People were screaming every time the shark appeared; they screamed and sobbed when Quint died. When the shark was killed, he said the cheers and applause were almost deafening! People were on their feet cheering and applauding and hugging each other. He said he had never seen an audience react that way to a movie before. If time travel ever becomes possible, my first stop is going to be June 20th, 1975. Opening day of “JAWS”. What I would give to experience it like my uncle had for the first time!

2019 still one of the best scenes in movie history
Thank God they didn't go with the ending in the book. In the book (SPOILERS) the shark sinks the boat, Quint stabs the shark in the belly with a harpoon and the shark slides back into the water taking Quint with it via rope around his ankle, the shark races toward Brody as he prepares for his death and then....it just succumbs to its belly wound and very slowly sinks underwater, then Brody's like "Oh cool I'm alive. Well, see ya".........wasn't that just riveting
James Michel That's basically the ending of Moby Dick, with the harpoon and stuff, except the white whale doesn't apparently die. I have read that Benchley wanted Spielberg to have a more realistic ending because a breached scuba tank won't blow up like that (it will just rocket around like crazy), but Spielberg was shrewd to go for the crowd-pleasing ending. His career was really on the line with this movie.
Yeah Peter Benchely didn't really come up with an original ending.
Heh, Moby DICK
Sorry I had to do it, please dun hurt meh ;-;
Alan Falleur Yes, Peter was rather adamant about using the original novel ending, thinking that the explosive ending was just too unrealistic. Spielberg told him words to the effect of, "Look if I have their attention for two hours, they'll go for it." And the author said Spielberg turned out to be 100% correct...he witnessed the crowd cheering when he watched it.

Honestly Brody’s laugh after killing Bruce was the best thing ever. Here’s this guy, knows next to nothing about sharks and hates the ocean and he’s left to contend with it after Quint gets eaten and Hooper is trapped, he was so resourceful and used strategy to kill this terrifying monster of a shark and effectively ends the chain of deaths at Amity beach. Best moment ever.
Such a perfect ending.
Nothing will ever beat this film. Besides Jaws 2 every other Shark Film is just silly fun or stupid. Nothing will ever beat this film or come close to it’s sequel. One of the greatest movies of all time!
Whether Brody realizes it, or not, he's avenged the death of Quint.
Not to mention every other poor soul who died horribly because of that fuckin thing. One of the most satisfying man vs monster endings ever.
Darkman9478
Darkman9478 brave man
Darkman947
Darkman9478 is that hoenstly a good thing??...
Even the rifle that won ww2 can even kill a monster shark. This movie is a masterpiece!!
2:01 "BLOUGHHHWAAAT" haha that sound.
How many agree with me when I say this movie is one of the few that doesn't need a reboot?
They could improve the special effects Star Wars fashion, keep the look of Jaws the same, but enhance the close up movements and details to look more realistic with really good CGI, that is all that is needed,
Reboot is bullshit and pointless
Bryson McGinnis it needs one but one that brings nostalgia. one with same consept and same looking bot and especialy same music.
Bryson McGinnis
Close up scenes of shark movements can be enhanced using modern day effects, but no reboot required
If they reboot it,they better do it with the respect it deserves is all I'm saying...
depends on if they do it riht
One of the best movies ever made. One of my favorite films. I barely swam in the ocean last summer. I only went so far before I could hearing the Jaws theme playing in my head🤣
2:23 Brody: Smile you son, BOOM!
The captain not only goes down with the ship, but kills the beast and lives to tell the tale
The actors back in those days were legit badasses. Roy Scheider was in the navy and was also a golden gloves winner. Steve mcQueen was a marine, as was Gene Hackman and Charles bronson. Bronson actually fought in world war II. Ditto for jimmy stewart who flew bombing missions during the big one. Proper men all of them.
Eoin Brennan there’s still plenty of them today. First one that comes to mind is Adam Driver, who was a marine.
SgtBaker16 I hi oknjnbjmlkoppplllpmiiooio
Eoin Brennan wait really?!
You legit badasses.....
Eoin Brennan BRONSON! I wanna talk to you about your WWII experience......as soon as I meet you in heaven.

Bruce: I NEVER KNEW MY FATHER!(Wails)
Oh come here group hug we’re all mates here
@wildkratts16 AJ Marlin: I can’t read human.
Dory: Oh i can read! Maybe we can have help- OH LOOK! SHARKS
That’s a total roast lol 😂
No, no! Dory! Dory! Hey, that’s mine. No, Dory! Gimme! Ow! Are you okay? Ow, ow, ow. I’m so sorry. You really clocked me there. Am I bleeding? Oh. Ow, ow, ow. Dory, are you okay... ?
I could watch this masterpiece of a scene over and over again. I got goosebumps everytime I see it!!!
Almost 50 years old and still as good today as it was then great film terrific cast
That was all or nothing. He would've been dead if he missed.
Leondrius also notice how close the boat was to sinking, if he missed that shot then it would be over for chief Brody
He wod kill jaws in water
Louise Hynd he wouldn’t be able to kill Bruce (the shark) in the water, think realistically. How would he be able to kill the shark while swimming? No.
Oh
He mit
After seeing the shark devour Quint I f*cking love this scene.
Rumour has it that Luke Skywalker was thinking of Brody's final shot just as he blew up the Death Star.
The sound design was absolutely incredible, It's almost satisfying
