This movie really stood out in a time in the mid 1970's when mostly every movie was very long, very drawn out with a lot of dialogue, and very little action. Sleepy campy movies. With the exception of soul films of course. Shaft was a badass movie.

2:07 - 2:21 I ALWAYS love this part of the score in this scene, it's just- I don't know how to describe it. The situation combined with the score just SCREAMS uncertainty. Will Hooper tie the barrel in time? Will Quint miss the shark? What will the shark do if things don't go to plan? It's that build up of uncertainty that really gets you hooked (Pun intended)
It makes it appear as if the humans are gonna win. As if they are the hunters. With all their teamwork & technology, they barely manage against an incredibly strong & efficient creature. Yes, they manage to kill the shark in the end. But that doesn't even matter. Shaw got killed, too, and the other 2 will probably never be the same, suffering from PTSD. The shark is actually innocent. It just hunts to eat. It finds easy prey in humans, so it decides to hunt them. It's pure instinct. The humans, on the other hand, esp. Shaw, project their trauma & hatred on an innocent animal. Which leads to their deminse, literally or morally. This is "their moment", before things start going down for them.

I've seen hundreds of movies, and this is by far my favorite. The whole idea of a shark out-thinking the experts is just brilliant. And its because sharks are real, and in their world, they are at the top of the food chain: NOT US. Of all the scenes in the movie, and I love them all, I feel this is the greatest scene ever produced. The music, the acting, the idea of a shark attacking a boat with 3 grown men with weapons, is absolutely brilliant cinematography. Thank you Mr Spielberg, Mr Shaw, Mr Scheider, and Mr. Dreyfuss. Watch and enjoy..........
Just showed this to my younger sister who had never seen it begore. Man this movie holds up to the test of time, she was laughing at all the funny scenes and in shock or terror at all the suspenseful/fear scenes. Truly a masterpeice of cinema to still draw all the intended reactions 40 odd years later.
I love how the triumphant music abruptly comes to an end when the barrel sinks into the depths of the sea. Wha-wom! Nature steals the round again! Good work, John Williams.
Just saw this again for the first time in a long time. I had forgotten just what an amazing movie this is! I had forgotten these barrel scenes, and they're really the thing that makes the shark so scary. It shows just how ridiculously big and powerful the thing is.
+Lorenzo Holt Its not just about the shark. As cool as Bruce is to see. Its the Bro mance Its the camaraderie of the guys on the boat. Fighting, struggling. Eventually working together.
+Gerardo Gonzalez Is a coincidence that Robert Shaw said that line, and then three years later after the film was released HE was killed by a heart attack?
“Here lies the body of Mary Lee died at the age of 103 for 15 years she kept her virginity not a bad record for this vicinity” “ I see ya got ya rubbers”
There's nothing really amazing about the cinematography. The shots are fabulously composed (That's Steven) but the lighting is simply daylight. Big deal. The skill comes in matching the various cuts shot weeks apart. If you notice the close up on Robert Shaw is in over cast. The wide shot is in bright sunshine. Obviously shot at different times. But it all works because the cutting and action is exciting. You don't notice the discrepancy of the skies. But look for it and you'll see it. Sticks out like a sore thumb. But the acting and cutting is so good that you're not paying attention to the "Sky" which drastically changes shot to shot. This sequence of the shark approaching the boat with Robert on the pulpit likely took WEEKS to shoot.
While I love complex characters and stories, there is something wonderful about watching a simple movie executed beautifully. Films like Fantasia and To Kill a Mockingbird are masterful examples, but I feel Jaws is the movie that perfected the art of simple storytelling. At its core, it’s just three men with simple motivations and personality traits hunting a shark. But the way that they interact off each other and their banter make them possibly my favorite trio in all of cinema.
John Williams wanted to use swashbuckling adventure music to showcase that the three heroes think they have the upper hand, and will have this whole thing sewn up before the end of the day.
***** Oh man. The score is amazing in this film. And it is not just the duh nuh. It is all the other motifs and themes. I could critique every scene and describe why it works so incredibly. Right up there with Rick Roy and Robert is John Williams. He is the emotion of the film. One of my all time fav film moments and something that is burned in my memory is the start of the shark hunt. The moment when we first see the shark and Dreyfus then bolts down the ladder. The music takes off and the adventure begins. I've seen it a hundred times and it STILL excites me.
The one part that always scared me was at 8 seconds when brody's foot slipped I kept imagining him falling into the water and getting eaten before he could get back on the boat
Hooper says, "I need something in the foreground to give it some scale", and it's only a handful of shots later when we see Quint at the tip of the Orca in the foreground of the shot as the shark swims towards him, making the shark look huge. Spielberg is a goddamn genius.
The score, the script, the cinematography, the editing, and of course the incredible acting all combine to make this movie a thrill no matter how many times you've seen it.
I like what they did with Brody here, they kind of made him a fish out of water character which is ironic, he's had little to no experience with sharks, he's never drove a boat and he hates the ocean whilst you've got Quint who is an expert on hunting sharks and Hooper who is an expert on shark knowledge
This is the only scene in the entire movie where the mechanical shark worked perfectly. In all other scenes, notice the use of only half/parts of the shark's body (so that people could manipulate it), or the barrels in place of the shark. It goes to show how absolutely brilliant Steven Spielberg is .. in every other scene using only "part of" the shark his camera angles and use of building suspense perfectly distract the viewers from the fact they are not looking at a whole shark. A major reason the three stars are so hyped up in this scene is because they know they will not get the chance to have "another take"; there is no way they could re-set-up everything so perfectly, at sea, in this scene.
I'm pretty sure this is the "tow shark", the one you don't hear about much. It didn't run on the rail system. It hooked up to a tow rope which was tied to an out of frame boat that simply towed it around. It didn't really have any moving parts (maybe a rudder) so it couldn't break down. They used it a lot (they had to). I read about it in a paperback called "The Making of Jaws" back in about 1977. It had a lot of production and behind the scenes photos, which was pretty damn rare back then. Very cool. I remember a chapter called "The Sunk Sinking Orca and The Well-Worn Shark", where the boat and the shark had to work together. Naturally, either the boat wouldn't sink correctly, or the shark wouldn't work. Or both. Nightmare. The last chapter of the book was entitled The End of the "Tale" and featured a photo of Chrissie's naked butt as she ran into the surf in the opening scene. Pretty funny to a 10-year-old.
All the swimming shots around the boat are with the sea sled shark which was simply pulled through the shots by a speed boat. None of these shots involved the platform shark. That was the shark that constantly malfunctioned because it had all the pneumatics for activation. The sea sled footage was difficult to do because it took so long to set the shots. If the take didn't work the reset for take 2 took half an hour. These shots took days to accomplish.

No cgi, no green screen, no massive explosions, just a fisherman, a shark hunter and a sheriff police trying to hunt a shark in the middle of the ocean. classic scene in a timeless movie!
Your husbands all right Mrs Brody he's fishing. Just caught a couple of stripers. We'll bring them in for dinner. We won’t be long. We havent seen anything yet. Orca Out.
The 3 main charecters of brody quint and hooper were perfect casting! Wiout these GREAT actors this movie wuddnt the cult classic n MUCH loved film of the best era of movie making the 70s and then the 80s afterwards! In my own personal opinion the 70s n 80s churned out some of ALL tine BEST EVER films!
1:12 this shot sums up pretty much the 2nd half of Jaws: Brody is much closer to Quint than Hooper is to Quint, and the personalities of them or what they do: Quint: Getting his harpoon ready, he's ready to hunt this shark down like any other. Hooper: Doing his sientific, that's probably the biggest shark he's ever seen. Brody: Doing basic stuff a he's out of his element, getting to learn what's going on around him.
This whole movie right here is proof that you can make anything a masterpiece without cgi, all you need is patience, hard work, and a vision spiced with imagination and creativity
"When I think of Jaws I think of courage and stupidity, and I think of both of those things existing underwater" Also fun fact the radio is Steven. He knew how to balance action, terror, and comedy
0:52 -- You never say "Over, Out" on the radio. When you're done talking, it's just "Out". Surprising that the staff missed this since the rest of the movie is detail perfect.
True, and almost all shark movies after Jaws are trying to be blockbusters like Jaws. They all stink. Toxic shark, sharknado, LAND SHARK, and alll that other crap.
"Your husband's alright Mrs. Brody he's fishing he just got a couple of stripers we're bringin' 'im in for dinner we won't be long we haven't seen anything yet over and out!" XD
He knows that Ellen knows they are hunting for sharks. That's what he meant when he said they haven't seen anything yet. He was pretty much trying to reassure her, so she wouldn't worry about her husband. But he BS'd when he said Brody caught strippers. He lied, but he lied to make Brody look good. It's messed up how much respect Quint has for the Chief.
Robert Shaw in this classic jaws scene "got a couple of strippers, we'll bring em in for dinner we won't be long, we havn't seen anything yet over n out" Class!
“ What were you doing, you knew I had to get a clean shot right in the head ! “ I didn’t realize he said that until I watched this clip. He definitely had the shot, would that have killed it ? Who knows, but maybe Quint doesn’t get killed in the end if he had taken that shot. Then again even a direct head shot probably would’ve just made Jaws more angry
The remarkable thing about this movie even today is the way it moves along. There's hardly a wasted frame or a dull moment in it.
Thank Mr. Spielberg! :]

For a movie that's 36 years old it still looks amazing in today's standards.
It's almost 45 years old...not 36. I was 12...and read both the original story and the post-film story. Which were definitely not the same...
@@kjbuchanan63 That’s because you responded to a comment almost a decade before yours
No cgi, no green screen, no massive explosions, just a fisherman, a shark hunter and a sheriff police trying to hunt a shark in the middle of the ocean. classic scene in a timeless movie!
nah no massive explosions at all..(The ending, rolls eyes)
@@Tommyblueeyes he means this scene
How many movies can make you howl with laughter and scare you out of the water at the same time?
Your husbands all right Mrs Brody he's fishing. Just caught a couple of stripers. We'll bring them in for dinner. We won’t be long. We havent seen anything yet. Orca Out.
forgot "we won't be long"
I thought he said Orca out
Spider-Man we'd shooter
That monologue cracked me up 😂 Quint was awesome!

Probably the best movie ever made, magic.
0:16 - :25 That's Steven's voice, believe it or not.
THATS WHAT I THOUGHT BUT I WASNT FOR SURE HAHAHAHAHA
The 3 main charecters of brody quint and hooper were perfect casting! Wiout these GREAT actors this movie wuddnt the cult classic n MUCH loved film of the best era of movie making the 70s and then the 80s afterwards! In my own personal opinion the 70s n 80s churned out some of ALL tine BEST EVER films!
for gods sake hooper , tie it on ,tie it on ............remember hooper drives the boat chief !
“He’s Comin’...Hehehe.. He’s comin’!”
"Hooper get clear of the barrel." "HOOPER?!"
"Tie it up will ya!"
@@nikolacustoms9573 "Your turn, Quint."
"Hoopa where are you?"

BARRELS! YOU TOLD THE SHARK WHERE WE WERE!
The Cheeki Breeki Guy wdtzd
The Orca is the best fictional Ship ever
i remeber the scene when three barrels hit the damn thing and he still pulled them under and quint was like....wtf!!!idk what to do now!
Yep. Although the barrels came back to the surface, maybe at most a minute after the shark pulled them under.
If quint had tied the line on the barrels, he might have gotten a clear shot in the head.
One of my favorite movies of all time. Also the soundtrack by john Williams is as epic as can be. Masterful
Jeff Ree
Robert Shaw was just fantastic.
God I’m old 27 n I watched this at least 2,000! Times in my lifetime I’d take the chance to live in these times no worry’s!
Tie it up will you
That scene is so fucking good

1:12 this shot sums up pretty much the 2nd half of Jaws: Brody is much closer to Quint than Hooper is to Quint, and the personalities of them or what they do:
Quint: Getting his harpoon ready, he's ready to hunt this shark down like any other.
I just love that sharp harpoon coming out the window at the guy like "eeeh, ok going back, backing up"
"When I think of Jaws I think of courage and stupidity, and I think of both of those things existing underwater"
Also fun fact the radio is Steven.
He knew how to balance action, terror, and comedy
Jaws will never keep me out of water cuz I'm a big fan of sharks🦈🦈🦈
VenomGamer 101Plays same here.
John Cornell Get me a plane ticket.
0:52 -- You never say "Over, Out" on the radio. When you're done talking, it's just "Out". Surprising that the staff missed this since the rest of the movie is detail perfect.
I cud watch n re-watch jaws over n over! Great shark movie EVER! 👌
Shark movies
(1975) : Very well done Animatronics
(2016-2017) : Very bad CGI
I miss movies like this.
Indeed
True, and almost all shark movies after Jaws are trying to be blockbusters like Jaws. They all stink. Toxic shark, sharknado, LAND SHARK, and alll that other crap.
@@specrec1071 even dark tide but 47 meter down is great but not really as I think
@Nikki Necro r/lewronggeneration seriously give it a break. Quit complaining
That’s why I’m worried Hollywood’s gonna stoop so low as to remake Jaws with a computer CGI PS4 shark.
"Your husband's alright Mrs. Brody he's fishing he just got a couple of stripers we're bringin' 'im in for dinner we won't be long we haven't seen anything yet over and out!" XD
Gibb you are not the best thing ever is easier to do that for me too much
So they caught some strippers, but then he says we haven't seen anything yet.
William Scott we haven't seen anything yet is referring to the shark, you know, the whole reason they are on this trip.
Noooooo
I really should not drink Woodford Reserve while watching this.
That scene when Quinn is bouncing at the bow (2:06)……good scene.
Robert Shaw in this classic jaws scene "got a couple of strippers, we'll bring em in for dinner we won't be long, we havn't seen anything yet over n out" Class!
paul robinson stripers * 😂😂😂😂
I would have liked to see the pole they were on!!
There are strip joints out on the ocean? Awesome!
Unbelievable no Oscars
Jaws won Oscars for Best Sound, Best Film Editing, and Best Music.
Barbara Smith I know it does count but not the same as best pic or acting. Thanks for the info though.
B Kavanaugh الووو
It should have won best picture, and it’s a shame Robert Shaw was not even nominated for best supporting actor
@@betterthanflapjacks absolutely agree 👍
FOREGROUND MY ASS! *dies in laughter*
Out of all the movies I've ever seen, I'd say there are about ten I love the most, but Jaws easily has the best music score, perfect!!
Did anyone noticed that the Voice on the intercom is Steven Spielberg
Noone is gonna notice that unless they already have the information.
It's easy when you match the voice to a voice you heard when he was conducting interviews.
I didn't know that, but I do know the difference between a radio and an intercom.
In reality a barrel would fatigue a shark or whale pretty quick, in the movie it seemed like a young megalodon
The greatest movie of all time
2:42 Ok, that's pretty badass
Stephan Spielberg cameo
HES coming hehehe coming ah you gotta love Quint .
One of my favorite movies of all time.. never gets old
“ What were you doing, you knew I had to get a clean shot right in the head ! “ I didn’t realize he said that until I watched this clip. He definitely had the shot, would that have killed it ? Who knows, but maybe Quint doesn’t get killed in the end if he had taken that shot. Then again even a direct head shot probably would’ve just made Jaws more angry
that wouldve been a very different film lol ...and the sharks name isnt JAWS lol...its the name of the movie...not the name of the shark
