Plus, as someone else mentioned, Poopy Joes's Emergency Bugle as seen in the hidden Banana Bay room shares its model with one of the bugles from Soldier's banner equips.

Ah, so I have an answer for the unusual cubes at 16:05 ! Accessing through GMod, if you look in the Asteroid folder in the TF2 Directory, you can find the unique models used for rd_asteroid. There are several grey/metallic cubes that share the name 'Moon Gravel'. While it might just be boring old Moon Rocks, it's definitely from the Moon, confirming the space connection.
Well they thought that gravel was an important resource right? Maybe they were thinking of Moon gravel as an possible improvement of the normal gravel, or if you reach a little, maybe it could tie it somehow to the story of Portal, or just a reference to that game.
Not from the moon, the opposite! The rocket that was supposed to use australium did, after all, use a *water* *gravel* mixture. They could be left overs of the rocket fuel used in PJs demise.

Alright, let's see, bonus info time: - It only occurred to me after I made the video, but someone commented that Poopy Joe's bugle is the same as the bugle Soldier uses with the Buff Banner. If this is true, the purpose of Banana Bay could be to get Soldier there so the Bugle could be stolen, with the pointless objective of both teams blowing up the same train just being a distraction to keep them busy. - Someone commented asking why it had to be Soldier teleporting the mutated bread to the moon and why it couldn't have just been a normal loaf of bread being teleported up as a routine supply drop by the government. This is a fair point, but I'd counter by saying that if Bread was allowed to be teleported up, the station should've had a problem with it far sooner and before the dome was even completed. The fact that Mama only arrives on the station after a long period of the station being active and functional suggests something changed in their system, for which Soldier is still the most likely source of change, given the wall-scrawls depicting him. - I missed a wall-scrawl depicting a recipe and a handful of other notable TF2 NPCs with bread taped over their faces. This was an oversight on my part, but it was motivated by the fact that I don't believe these wall-scrawls mean anything. Lore-wise they're too far-stretched to suggest anything massive, aside from maybe they were made by a possessed Red team planning on which bread types to infect the targets with. I doubt they have any real immediate implications though.
A few thoughts from my noggin: That 1979 on the wall got me thinking. You know where else I saw a year on the wall? Many times in Portal 2. As we progress back up to the main Aperture facility, we endure many years worth of tests. They end in 1982. The "bees injection" poster seems exactly like something Cave Johnson might want to use for a test. In addition, might this be where Cave got his 70 million dollars worth of moon rocks? I think what we have here is some potential "fun lore".
My only issue with this is that Black Mesa and Aperture are fighting for a very specific government contract, that for teleportation. (specifically in the events that lead up to the Portal gun and the resonance cascade) In order for this theory to work the events of TF2 would have to destroy government access to this technology, either through the actions of Bread Space or through the engineer or the Administrator sabotaging said tech. The resonance cascade occurs AFTER 1979, so the tech must have been lost between between 1979 and 200- when Black Mesa sets off the resonance cascade and all that followed. (yes I know g-man actually set this in motion, that's but not important here) I'd like to think that this would be explained in future comics, but I genuinely don't think any more comics are ever being released.

Something else you might have missed. In banana bay underneath red spawn there are two conveyer belts converting dozens of bananas into Australium bars. This could mean that the Bananas produced there could contain Australium, which is why the summoning circle uses bananas
You know, ever since this map got added to the game I felt it was off. It's not very Smissmas-y in any way. A question always ached inside my skull: "Why this map?" Now with the discovery of the lore of the map, and the map being made official, that question aches more. Is Valve trying to show us something? Is something coming somehow related to this map? I could very likely be going insane from the lack of... Well, everything related to TF2, but it all just feels a bit off.
Pretty sure the map creator intended this to be added during Scream Fortress, but whoever was picking the maps at Valve decided to save it for Smissmass in favor of more directly Scream Fortress themed maps.
For the Teleporter point being like a Hub: In MvM the Engie can turn his Teleporter into a 2 Way Tele and the Eureka Effect only requires a Teleport Exit to work, so it wouldn't be dumb to assume that the Teleporter technolegy could work in different ways. Probably a lot of Exits around the World/the Moon and a modefied Entry that can switch frequencies between them to change destination
On the topic of "Aliens and BLU being heroes", I'd say pl_snowycoast could count as one. From what I read in the wiki, the map is inspired by 'The Thing', the big telling being it takes place in snowy complex and the stranded UFO. it seems, an UFO crash landed there, the RED team were quick to built facilities around it to research it, but unfortunately all of them were assimilated by the 'Thing'. BLU got the hold of this and decided to stop the alien invasion by blowing up the root of it. The BLUs of course has to fight the Things that has been impersonating the RED mercenaries, keeping them away from their base.

The things are the attempts of the bread to leave space and go to earth, when the government found out about this they finally sent the mercenaries which have already come in contact with the bread so they can kill two birds with one stone.
If this is Valve hinting at a potential community made update then this might be one of the biggest things to have happened in the past few years. After all I’m quite sure that Valve has hinted at potential update like this before.
Theory: australium exposure is what allows the bread monsters grow to unreasonable size. “eating rocks” is something a bread monster could do anywhere but both a red base the moon is somewhere australium could be.

god i love this map. i'm gonna make it a ritual to always be wearing a Breadcrab now anytime im defending on this map. and honestly, if this map gets updated a couple of times to fix the gameplay issues it currently has, i think even its current haters wont be able to keep that stance on it for long. it is _very_ well made, its just that its been implemented a bit too early, so we're missing some of the finishing touches.
I suspect red may have put up some fight since in and near the various red spawns you find scrawlings in blood, and toward last someone has made a list of who is bread (which is everyone), once again in blood, maybe a last standing miner, maybe a blue member, or maybe zombie Poopy Joe
So, delving further into lore speculation, since RED is seen as the better team in canon, the government clearly picked them to send in first. When they failed, BLU team was all that was left to destroy Big Mama (BTW, the change notes for one of the fix updates that came soon after Smissmas specifically listed changes to 'Big Mama's' animation.)

TF2 Lore is absolutely nuts, I love seeing how far this game has come from having no plot at all when it released other than 8 men and 1 sentient potato sack shoot guns in the desert into...this absolutely beautiful madness. I've been playing since near launch and never expected this chaos but I would never change it. Its fascinatingly weird and I love it.
I like to think that after blowing up mama red team is no longer under the control of the breadcrabs, and red and blu both escape together with the help of poopy Joe. There’s no way the story just ends there with them all dying on the moon. They’re the tf2 mercs for gods sake they gotta find some ridiculous and contrived way of getting back to earth!
an alternate to red team being under control is that red team was hired by someone trying to pull a weyland yutani and capture it to use as a bioweapon, fits with all the scifi references, its also possible to teleport without a teleportation pad as seen with the eureka effect, which could possibly explain how soldier got it on the moon
since these bread creatures are, well, bread, they have no actual organs. the way to combat this as animals that have short lifespans do, they reproduce rapidly using the spores in order to make more bread than there are dying. also, the time it takes for a young breadling to reach maturity (mama sized) is about 3 days, assuming the big bread in expiration date came to be the same way they're explained in this map. and id like to think soldier just pressed random buttons (if any buttons, or the teleporter was already set to the moon from past experiments?) and it happened to send it to the moon
I thought the government just teleported mama multiple times and then It grew larger, because of the medic and engineer teleporting bread scene. I guess the radiation of the teleporter didn't mutate the bread, It's literally aging. Also, I think it's more than 3 days because mama seems a bit bigger than the big loaf in expiration date.

10:32 An extra little detail. On the gatefold of the TF2 soundtrack there are a bunch of photos taken by Miss Pauling. Most of the photos seem to be taken the day Expiration Date took place. There is one photo of Engineer on the Rancho Relaxo dated, March 29th, 1969. Its not clear whether or not that photo was taken the day ED happened but its safe to assume it was probably take the same week. So that means ED probably took place in late March or early April of 1969. So that means that the scientists were dealing with the Bread monsters for around 9 months before all of the documents were written.

@@nepi7847 you'd be correct, it's practically confirmed seeing as the bread can mutate and why else would there be a random running bread? the reason i bring the bread's mutation factor into this is because, whilst pyro is chasing the bread pup, you can kind of make out a quadrupedal set of legs. meaning, yes, medic and engie unknowingly gave pyro a new pet, but knowing soldier, he probably stole it and teleported both it and other breads to space and back multiple times, leaving them to coagulate into mama. yes, i expanded on your canon fact with my own theory, but who cares? it's fun to think about.
knowing the US government's nuclear passcode at a time was just '000', i wouldn't be surprised if soldier managed to connect to one of the moon base teleporters since we already saw how he would try breaking passcodes in 'meet the spy'

I really like the idea of the expiration date base being a tele hub, it would make sense for the mercs to have a permanent base and it explains a lot of small details about the world.
The names of the scientists in the fatty report are all references to The Thing, which makes me love this map all the more. I wasn't expecting this dumb bullshit to be anywhere near as engaging as it turned out to be. (Spoilers for The Thing) Even their causes of death line up with the movie ones, that's perfect.
Watching this video immediately after watching MatPat's latest FNAF theory, and the difference in enjoyment I feel watching this video in contrast to that one is night and day. Game Theory may need to watch out for the new theory king
One thing to consider, while the writing in the walls says that there is no escape, it also has the drawing of a rocket. Meaning it may be able to escape by the teleporters soldier used to telepot bread.
1. Smissmas is already canon ("A Smissmas Story" comics) 2. Base in Expiration Day already has at least 4 teleport enterance-exit pairs (2 of them are to and from where Demo got beer, 1 local teleport used by Medic and Engi and 1 local teleport used by Soldier, both for teleporting bread) 3. This is Halloween map and Halloween is 110% canon so even if Smissmas maps aren't canon, this map can be.
btw in one of the halloween maps (i have no clue which one i forgor) yoy can see a stationary bread crab in a vent so not all instances were contained...

I do want to note that the TF2 comics take place in the early 70s, so bread space takes place probably long after Mannco is destroyed and the administrator dies (unless she somehow finds a bunch of Australium in the last comic) who knows, maybe the mercenaries work for the government now.
Since theres Australium on the moon and this moon base was in operation in 1969 to 1970 something. potentially the administrator got her wrinkly hands on some of it after the last comic in that short time span she had after using her reserve?
I feel like Document 2 is somewhat an SCP reference, with all of the protocols and using Subject A-X to describe offspring or clones, and the idea of eliminating all unauthorized citizens who know about it feels very SCP Foundation to me.
Honestly the Teleporter theory isn't far off since Demoman was teleported somewhere to get beer which must have been having a party on the other end with how he was acting when returning. On a side note what other wheat based products could make tumors given that many wheat products that could get the tumors.
I think the best part of it all is that they decided to put bread space, a halloween map, first into the christmas update, and then into the default rotation.

I havent played on the map yet. I heard it has alot of trouble with bugs and unfinished and questionable design problems. BUTT I love the behind the scenes story telling and connections you just revealed. I want to belive this is Valve quietly moving the tf2 story behind the scenes with details like in the old days to get us nice and ready for the next update... whether or not its the case... im still pessimist. The post-morten is definitely a reference to The Thing, Copper, Blair, and Fuchs are all characters in the movie. They also die in the same ways described. The Thing also got an entire map of its own, Snowy Coast.
I have a little theory. Bread could have possibly gone through xen since engineer uses the same teleportation method as the scientists in half life 1. So my theory is that bread could have maybe been infected by a xen parasite

First Off: You say, going off your theory, that the TF2 mercs don't come out of this alive, Along with Red team is effected specifically by the monster and gets taken over by Mama. Now assuming that the TF2 mercs die when possessed, This lets us assume that everyone, Including the Scout dies. According to God, Scout dies on December 4th 1987 (you know, during December, Smissmas Season? Hence why this is a main game map and not an event map?) which would give a reanimated Poopy Joe enough time to make it to the Moon, Mann Co and the Government to look more into the Bread Monsters, give the reason why theirs no bodies. They already cleaned out years ago, either rotted, eaten, or disposed of, with only Mama remaining, which the TF2 mercs are send in the handle because one of them literally caused this clusterfuck. With everything put together: Bread Space takes place during December 4th, 1987, and all the Mercs die. This is the end of they're story. They're final mission. Fitting for the near end of such a great game.

Pretty sure the map creator intended this to be added during Scream Fortress, but whoever was picking the maps at Valve decided to save it for Smissmass in favor of more directly Scream Fortress themed maps.
For the Teleporter point being like a Hub: In MvM the Engie can turn his Teleporter into a 2 Way Tele and the Eureka Effect only requires a Teleport Exit to work, so it wouldn't be dumb to assume that the Teleporter technolegy could work in different ways. Probably a lot of Exits around the World/the Moon and a modefied Entry that can switch frequencies between them to change destination
I love how you took the effort to finding the lore within the map, it's beautiful.
On the topic of "Aliens and BLU being heroes", I'd say pl_snowycoast could count as one.
From what I read in the wiki, the map is inspired by 'The Thing', the big telling being it takes place in snowy complex and the stranded UFO.
it seems, an UFO crash landed there, the RED team were quick to built facilities around it to research it, but unfortunately all of them were assimilated by the 'Thing'.
BLU got the hold of this and decided to stop the alien invasion by blowing up the root of it.
The BLUs of course has to fight the Things that has been impersonating the RED mercenaries, keeping them away from their base.
So was the red team cured afterwards or is the map not canon?

@@thelancerfromtimeline1009 Seeing as it's based on The Thing, there likely is no cure, the closest thing in the lore of that series is that there is canonically only one person confirmed to be immune, that being Blake from The Thing 2002 video game.

The things are the attempts of the bread to leave space and go to earth, when the government found out about this they finally sent the mercenaries which have already come in contact with the bread so they can kill two birds with one stone.

I love this type of deep lore exploration stuff. I'm glad that the community has found creative ways to continue to expand upon TF2's universe.

Theory: australium exposure is what allows the bread monsters grow to unreasonable size. “eating rocks” is something a bread monster could do anywhere but both a red base the moon is somewhere australium could be.
This is very similar to another event we’ve seen before…I just…cant wrap my finger around it though…bread crabs…government getting rid ıf lose ends…weird rocks getting mined on the moon? Wait holy shit this is Black Mesa in tf2

Half life and tf2 are in a different universe but its possible that events of half life happen in future tf2 universe

It’s confirmed in Half Life 2 Episode 2 that Portal and Half life are within the same universe, and the Ap-Sap’s description indicates that Portal and TF2 are the same universe. I do believe there may be a time gap though.

i'm gonna make it a ritual to always be wearing a Breadcrab now anytime im defending on this map.
and honestly, if this map gets updated a couple of times to fix the gameplay issues it currently has, i think even its current haters wont be able to keep that stance on it for long.
it is _very_ well made, its just that its been implemented a bit too early, so we're missing some of the finishing touches.
I suspect red may have put up some fight since in and near the various red spawns you find scrawlings in blood, and toward last someone has made a list of who is bread (which is everyone), once again in blood, maybe a last standing miner, maybe a blue member, or maybe zombie Poopy Joe
So, delving further into lore speculation, since RED is seen as the better team in canon, the government clearly picked them to send in first. When they failed, BLU team was all that was left to destroy Big Mama (BTW, the change notes for one of the fix updates that came soon after Smissmas specifically listed changes to 'Big Mama's' animation.)

TF2 Lore is absolutely nuts, I love seeing how far this game has come from having no plot at all when it released other than 8 men and 1 sentient potato sack shoot guns in the desert into...this absolutely beautiful madness. I've been playing since near launch and never expected this chaos but I would never change it. Its fascinatingly weird and I love it.
I like to think that after blowing up mama red team is no longer under the control of the breadcrabs, and red and blu both escape together with the help of poopy Joe.
There’s no way the story just ends there with them all dying on the moon. They’re the tf2 mercs for gods sake they gotta find some ridiculous and contrived way of getting back to earth!
an alternate to red team being under control is that red team was hired by someone trying to pull a weyland yutani and capture it to use as a bioweapon, fits with all the scifi references, its also possible to teleport without a teleportation pad as seen with the eureka effect, which could possibly explain how soldier got it on the moon
since these bread creatures are, well, bread, they have no actual organs. the way to combat this as animals that have short lifespans do, they reproduce rapidly using the spores in order to make more bread than there are dying. also, the time it takes for a young breadling to reach maturity (mama sized) is about 3 days, assuming the big bread in expiration date came to be the same way they're explained in this map. and id like to think soldier just pressed random buttons (if any buttons, or the teleporter was already set to the moon from past experiments?) and it happened to send it to the moon
I always thought the reason why soldier's bread in Expiration Date got so big was because it was teleported way too much.

I thought the government just teleported mama multiple times and then It grew larger, because of the medic and engineer teleporting bread scene. I guess the radiation of the teleporter didn't mutate the bread, It's literally aging. Also, I think it's more than 3 days because mama seems a bit bigger than the big loaf in expiration date.
@@galegopaulista4564 I mean, it's a reasonable assumption, considering the first bread monster you see is created by repeatedly teleporting bread, but Mama seems to prove this theory wrong.

10:32 An extra little detail. On the gatefold of the TF2 soundtrack there are a bunch of photos taken by Miss Pauling. Most of the photos seem to be taken the day Expiration Date took place. There is one photo of Engineer on the Rancho Relaxo dated, March 29th, 1969. Its not clear whether or not that photo was taken the day ED happened but its safe to assume it was probably take the same week. So that means ED probably took place in late March or early April of 1969. So that means that the scientists were dealing with the Bread monsters for around 9 months before all of the documents were written.

True, but due to its size we can tell that one is most likely the same one the medic and engineer were testing on earlier in the animation, and likely not one of the loafs soldier had teleported.
@@Samwiz1 Maybe after the events of Expiration Date, Soldier teleported that bread monster to the moon and it grew, by eating moon rocks until it turned into Mama, I mighta missed a detail that proves otherwise, but that's the beauty of theorising lol

@@nepi7847 you'd be correct, it's practically confirmed seeing as the bread can mutate and why else would there be a random running bread? the reason i bring the bread's mutation factor into this is because, whilst pyro is chasing the bread pup, you can kind of make out a quadrupedal set of legs. meaning, yes, medic and engie unknowingly gave pyro a new pet, but knowing soldier, he probably stole it and teleported both it and other breads to space and back multiple times, leaving them to coagulate into mama. yes, i expanded on your canon fact with my own theory, but who cares? it's fun to think about.

I really like the idea of the expiration date base being a tele hub, it would make sense for the mercs to have a permanent base and it explains a lot of small details about the world.
The names of the scientists in the fatty report are all references to The Thing, which makes me love this map all the more. I wasn't expecting this dumb bullshit to be anywhere near as engaging as it turned out to be.

One thing to consider, while the writing in the walls says that there is no escape, it also has the drawing of a rocket. Meaning it may be able to escape by the teleporters soldier used to telepot bread.
1. Smissmas is already canon ("A Smissmas Story" comics)
2. Base in Expiration Day already has at least 4 teleport enterance-exit pairs (2 of them are to and from where Demo got beer, 1 local teleport used by Medic and Engi and 1 local teleport used by Soldier, both for teleporting bread)
3. This is Halloween map and Halloween is 110% canon so even if Smissmas maps aren't canon, this map can be.

I do want to note that the TF2 comics take place in the early 70s, so bread space takes place probably long after Mannco is destroyed and the administrator dies (unless she somehow finds a bunch of Australium in the last comic) who knows, maybe the mercenaries work for the government now.
Since theres Australium on the moon and this moon base was in operation in 1969 to 1970 something. potentially the administrator got her wrinkly hands on some of it after the last comic in that short time span she had after using her reserve?

I feel like Document 2 is somewhat an SCP reference, with all of the protocols and using Subject A-X to describe offspring or clones, and the idea of eliminating all unauthorized citizens who know about it feels very SCP Foundation to me.

Honestly the Teleporter theory isn't far off since Demoman was teleported somewhere to get beer which must have been having a party on the other end with how he was acting when returning. On a side note what other wheat based products could make tumors given that many wheat products that could get the tumors.
I think the best part of it all is that they decided to put bread space, a halloween map, first into the christmas update, and then into the default rotation.

I havent played on the map yet. I heard it has alot of trouble with bugs and unfinished and questionable design problems. BUTT I love the behind the scenes story telling and connections you just revealed. I want to belive this is Valve quietly moving the tf2 story behind the scenes with details like in the old days to get us nice and ready for the next update... whether or not its the case... im still pessimist. The post-morten is definitely a reference to The Thing, Copper, Blair, and Fuchs are all characters in the movie. They also die in the same ways described. The Thing also got an entire map of its own, Snowy Coast.
I have a little theory. Bread could have possibly gone through xen since engineer uses the same teleportation method as the scientists in half life 1.
So my theory is that bread could have maybe been infected by a xen parasite

I think there's also a theoretical time that this could have taken place, and this is going off the stuff you said. Also it somehow connects even more dots and makes me look like a conspiracy theorist.
First Off: You say, going off your theory, that the TF2 mercs don't come out of this alive, Along with Red team is effected specifically by the monster and gets taken over by Mama. Now assuming that the TF2 mercs die when possessed, This lets us assume that everyone, Including the Scout dies. According to God, Scout dies on December 4th 1987 (you know, during December, Smissmas Season? Hence why this is a main game map and not an event map?) which would give a reanimated Poopy Joe enough time to make it to the Moon, Mann Co and the Government to look more into the Bread Monsters, give the reason why theirs no bodies. They already cleaned out years ago, either rotted, eaten, or disposed of, with only Mama remaining, which the TF2 mercs are send in the handle because one of them literally caused this clusterfuck. With everything put together:
Bread Space takes place during December 4th, 1987, and all the Mercs die. This is the end of they're story. They're final mission. Fitting for the near end of such a great game.
This means blu won the war. Despite losing most of the time. So this means the canon ending of bread space is blu winning.
