Last week's Hank video: "Are we the same person?" Today's video: "We have the exact same average words per video" I'm excited to see where this saga goes next.
I don't think Hank talks that much faster than John, guys! I'd say Hank talks fast consistently throughout the video and John sets up the subject slowly, at first, and, then, as he gets more passionated with each fact, he quickens the pace... this stat makes sense to me tbh
This reminds me of a Vihart quote: "This is why Science and Mathematics are so much fun. You discover things that seem impossible to be true and then get to figure out why it's impossible for them not to be." At first it seems ridiculously unlikely that your videos would have, on average, the exact same amount of words in them. But then it becomes clear, it's because you're both trying to get as much information as possible into exactly 4 minutes while still speaking at a comprehensible speed. And in that light it seems almost inevitable.
It's not that mind blowing if you've heard of "wisdom of the crowd", in large samples (and especially when it's a consistent 4 mins), averages tend to converge

Taking a photo of yourself with a book about reviewing just about anything and then reviewing the place where you took the photo is deliciously meta, and I'm totally here for it.
I think it seems like Hank talks so much faster because he covers so much more ground, without going into so much depth. I never think that John talks slowly, but he spreads his ideas out more, and speaks in a lot more metaphors, similes, and quotes. But overall, I think it makes a lot of sense that you speak the same number of words per minute, and not just because you share a channel. You also shared a home growing up, learned to speak in the same way, probably picked up a lot of each other's vocabulary, and I would bet that you have also picked up each other's canter. Additionally, because these are UA-cam videos, and you edit them in a certain way, you don't typically include things like stutters or restarts, so you can fit as many words into the video as will fit. Since you have a time limit for every video, I assume you both try to fit as much into that time as possible. I wonder if most UA-cam videos that are edited and formatted similarly to Vlogbrothers also contain the same number of words? This is some fascinating data!!! (on a side note, I love in the video where you talk about how you move more quickly over ideas, you managed to move super quickly over this idea to talk about the map. I had to pause the video before you talked about it so I could gather my thoughts!)
The central idea of the video--that of collaboration--is, I think, what makes this community extremely special. Something I discovered a while ago (thanks to observations from some friends) is that when I start talking about Vlogbrothers or Nerdfighteria-related things, the cadence of my speech changes to sounds similar to the way John and Hank speak!
To everyone wondering how that could be, considering Hank's speech speed, remember that between the two, Hank is the one that will make silly videos of just spazzing (coffee intake video), putting stuff on his head, dancing, humping stuff, spending 24hrs at Target, do a montage of time spent in an airport, doggy videos, etc. Those "silent" videos bring his average down. Also, songs.

Do we have any way of finding out the average words per video for reunion videos? My guess would be lower, but I also would not have expected these averages to be the same, so I'm curious!
Hearing how Hank wraps the video reminds me of the old days where John had to actively help Hank promote his stuff and think upon what he just said here, my heart just goes awwwww and I think truly the most amazing thing to follow them through (as a passive nerdfighter only) is you get to see the exact complicity of human being and cooperation and to possess that level of understanding of human potential is a gift in itself
impossible! Inconcievable! Hank speaks with the pace of a dad that sees his kid do something dangerous, while john speaks the pace of a dad, that sees his kid snuggle with the dog.
In another comment thread someone said the auto-generated captions amount to around 892 words! Of course, that isn't entirely accurate but probably close :)
Can someone write a research paper on this mans analysis of blog brothers videos? For all of the in-depth analysis he went into I think he needs publication😂
I honestly can't believe that the number is exactly the same. Your talking pace, especially nowadays, is so different from one another that I expected yours to be higher by a large margin, but no. Is it due to early Vlogbrothers videos, where John was the one talking faster? Is it because you talk fast but take more breaks?? I don't need sleep, I need answers!!
I feel this on a cellular level! Apparently, we as creators find a way to express ourselves and it just... becomes an unconscious part of what we do. Like, I make longer-form stuff, and have discovered even in the short amount of time I've been making videos to date, that I have a VERY narrow window of comfort in terms of length of the stuff I personally create. Like, no matter my plan for how long a video SHOULD be, it's like it really WANTS to be 14-16 mins - no longer and no shorter. I set out for my next one to be eight minutes. Guess how long I think it'll end up being by the time I'm done. 😂
As a psych major who is all about stats...this is amazing. Once my class had an exam and our scores made a PERFECT Bell Curve. Our professor was both thrilled and shocked. Similar strangeness.
Success! You got me buying the book now, rather than waiting for it to cross my path sometime in the future. The purchasing was a 1-star process, as I'm in China, so my email is now registered at a bunch of websites that won't actually ship to me, had it in many virtual carts that I then removed it from. Found one though that supposedly will. Here's hoping for reading it somewhere fun to add to that map (which is what pushed me into going for it now)
That’s so interesting! I feel like you guys also have very different things to say and very different cadences of how you say them but it all comes together in the same amount of words. Wild
This is somewhat related to something I remember watching years ago comparing languages. Comparing English and Spanish, using a large enough block of text/speech, even though there were far more words/syllables in Spanish, it would take the same amount of time to convey the same amount of information in each language.
Tbh I think this is why people think you are the same person so often. You have such a similar style of speech in the vlogbrothers video that is so unique from other youtubers. Growing up and showing videos to my friends they always remembered this channel as, “the guy who talks really fast.”
I remember reading an article a few years ago that analyzed information density in various languages, they found that most language give the same amount of information in the same time period, languages with longer words just ended up speaking more syllables per minute. This video made me think of that article, its very interesting that trying to cram the maximum amount of words into 4 minutes, you both end up with the same number of words.
No no Hank this is MIND BLOWING! I know they’re usually around 4 minutes so I figured it’s be similar. But the EXACT SAME? You really are the same person.
This realization is exactly what being a twin is like. I can’t tell you how often I’m thinking of a song (not singing it) and my brother comes up the stairs singing a different part of the exact same song
My strategy is actually VERY DIFFERENT. I write scripts that are 800-850 words long and then cut as I film, and then cut more as I edit. But what is ABSOLUTELY ASTONISHING to me is that we end up not in a similar place, but in the EXACT SAME PLACE, over quite a long sample size. -John

This is why I love the Green brothers. They always have such weirdly wonderful content crammed into ~4 minutes
Do we have any way of finding out the average words per video for reunion videos? My guess would be lower, but I also would not have expected these averages to be the same, so I'm curious!
I am very here for this vlogbrothers introspection.
Got the audio on this time I see.
*shade rattle noise*
Hearing how Hank wraps the video reminds me of the old days where John had to actively help Hank promote his stuff and think upon what he just said here, my heart just goes awwwww and I think truly the most amazing thing to follow them through (as a passive nerdfighter only) is you get to see the exact complicity of human being and cooperation and to possess that level of understanding of human potential is a gift in itself
forgot that today was friday and set myself up for a nice surprise when i saw this notification
same same - such a win :) :)
I love how much Hank and John love each other.
So early!
(Like my Anthropocene Reviewed book!? How is it here this early?? I've got it from my aunt in England??)
So happy today!!!
This is indeed amazing to me too Hank
impossible! Inconcievable! Hank speaks with the pace of a dad that sees his kid do something dangerous, while john speaks the pace of a dad, that sees his kid snuggle with the dog.
+1
You're not alone Hank, even given the circumstances having it be _so_ close is incredible! Less than a quarter of a word difference!
"amazing analytics that Alexander Daley put together" reads like an Eminem lyric
Vlog brothers is just amazing
Can someone who's a better nerd than me count how many words Hank said in this video, I need to know!
In another comment thread someone said the auto-generated captions amount to around 892 words! Of course, that isn't entirely accurate but probably close :)
i got 906ish
Gods, I love these two public selves so much! Also, yes, I can't wait to pick up my copy of the Anthropocene Reviewed next week!
Can someone write a research paper on this mans analysis of blog brothers videos? For all of the in-depth analysis he went into I think he needs publication😂
*vlog 😫
Like a quantitative report on vlogbrothers engagement i would read it cover to cover
This is giving me the same vibes as the mosaic trend on tik tok and I love it. I’m so glad Hank & John and nerdfighters are a part of my mosaic
++
I ordered Anthro Immediately and forgot about it till like two weeks ago and now i have something to be excited about. YAy
Just happy to be here!
This is on the one hand not at all surprising.
But also?
Mind-bogglingly amazing.
I won't be able to ever stop wondering how many words the specific vlogbrother video that I'm watching has.
This has absolutely blown my mind.
That really is truly amazing! Best part is that it's mostly unintentional.
Love these guys. They brighten my day.
As a psych major who is all about stats...this is amazing. Once my class had an exam and our scores made a PERFECT Bell Curve. Our professor was both thrilled and shocked. Similar strangeness.
My assumption was definitely that Hank said more!
Wild
“Let’s spend some time here.” = My favorite part of this video
I was totally prepared for Hank to have waaayyy more words
The fact that you too have a similar speech pattern is surprising to nobody it’s half the reason I love this channel
0:53 ofcourse you do hank , after all speaking with the speed of light is no joke
This video made me think of that article, its very interesting that trying to cram the maximum amount of words into 4 minutes, you both end up with the same number of words.
omg one of my fave videos. mind blowing for sure. love you two so much.
No no Hank this is MIND BLOWING! I know they’re usually around 4 minutes so I figured it’s be similar. But the EXACT SAME? You really are the same person.
these videos are the only ones i dont play at 1.5 speed. i love the pacing
This realization is exactly what being a twin is like. I can’t tell you how often I’m thinking of a song (not singing it) and my brother comes up the stairs singing a different part of the exact same song
Hank doing an impression of John was everything
I didn’t want to watch this video out of spite bc of the click baitish title but the. I remembered I have brand loyalty
